A virus has killed millions of crickets raised to feed pet reptiles and those kept in zoos. The cricket paralysis virus has disrupted supplies to pet shops across North America as a handful of operators have seen millions of their insects killed.  Read more.

Mysterious Fish Kill Prompts Ban in Haiti

Authorities in Haiti are trying to determine the cause of a fish kill in a lake that borders the Dominican Republic and, in the meantime, have banned consumption of fish from those waters.  Scores of fish have been found dead in Lake Azuei, specifically in areas of Fond Parisien and Malpasse, since Christmas Eve.  Read more.

Dozens Of Dead Birds Found Near Sullivan, Missouri

Dozens of dead birds are discovered near Sullivan, Missouri about an hour southwest of St. Louis. People in and around Sullivan are calling the whole thing a little weird. The scene is just east of Sullivan along the I-44 south service road at Winsel Creek. The Missouri Department of Conservation is looking into the situation.  See more here.

Now 300 Dead Birds Fall From the Sky in Alabama

Up to 300 dead birds have been found on the side of an Alabama highway in the latest mass animal death to be reported. The bodies of the birds, identified as grackles, were found strewn along the I-65 highway.  Grackles have also been found dead in their hundreds recently in Arkansas, Louisiana and Kentucky.  Read more.

371 Dead Birds Fall from Sky on LA’s Sunset Blvd

371 dead birds fell from the sky over Los Angeles, California, and hit the pavement at Sunset and Cahuenga. In the great shadow of the CNN building laid scattered hundreds of pigeons, most of them dead. This is another incident of dead birds falling from the sky, as has been seen in California, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Sweden, Italy, and other places around the world.  Read more.

Major, Bizarre Fish Die-Off Along Chicago Lakefront

A bizarre scene is evolving on the Chicago lakefront, with Canada geese and mallard ducks gulping down dead or dying gizzard shad.  A major die-off of what appears to be the 2010 class is happening in Chicago harbors. Thousands, perhaps far more than that, of dead gizzard shad in the 3- to 5-inch range are frozen in the ice of Chicago harbors or floating around in open patches of water.  Read more.

Thousands of Dead Fish on Folly Beach, South Carolina

Thousands of dead fish washed up on Folly Beach. City officials tell News 2 the first report of the fish came in just before dark on Wednesday.  Mark Williams with the Department of Health and Environmental Control assessed the fish. He says he found them in a line from about 3rd Ave. East to 5th Ave. West. Williams says the fish are Menhaden fish, a commons small bait fish.  Read more.

Birds Dying In Italy: Thousands Of Turtle Doves Fall Dead From Sky

On Wednesday, GeaPress reported hundreds — possibly thousands — of dead and dying birds in Italy. Countless turtle doves were found scattered in the streets, in flower beds and hanging tragically from trees “like Christmas balls” in the town of Faenza. Many of the birds that fell dead from the sky were discovered with a mysterious blue stain in their beaks.  Read more.

Record Manatee Deaths in Florida Due to Cold Stress

State wildlife officials said 429 manatees died in Florida last year, nearly 100 more deaths than in 2008.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Wednesday the increased deaths can be attributed, in part, to cold stress during the winter months of 2008 and 2009.  Read more.

Residents Gather, Eat Dead Fish Floating in Barangay Ibo

Maribel Mori asked her teenage son to fetch water yesterday morning.  Michael John came back with a pail of fish locally known as “potpot.” He and other residents had collected the fish, which were floating dead along the coastal waters of barangay Ibo, in Lapu-Lapu City.  A few hours after eating the fish, which was cooked with vinegar as inun-onan for breakfast, Maribel was at the barangay health center complaining of nausea, vomiting and headache.  Read more.

Nearly 70 Dead Bats Found in Tucson

Nearly 70 bats have been found dead in Tucson and Arizona Game and Fish officials are searching for answers. One possibility is unseasonably warm temperatures in the city. Game and Fish officials say the bats are Mexican free-tailed and should have migrated to Mexico two months ago.  Read more.
