40,000 Crabs Join Slew of Animal-Death Mysteries

First, it was birds falling from the sky, then thousands of dead fish washing up on shore.  Now, more than 40,000 Velvet swimming crabs have wound up dead on England beaches. The possible reason? Hypothermia.  The Thanet shoreline is littered with the crabs, along with dead starfish, lobsters, sponges and anemones.  Read more.

Thousands of dead fish were floating in Volusia County Tuesday. They were all in Spruce Creek in Port Orange. The fish kill is unusual because it is warm, according to people who live along the creek.  Read more.

Dead Birds in Sweden, more dead fish in Maryland, New Zealand and Brazil are now added to the phenomenon of dead birds and dead fish reported yesterday in three US states. Dead birds fell from the skies over Arizona, Louisiana, and Kentucky in the last few days. This, coupled with the thousands of dead fish in the Arkansas river is a growing mystery that can be described as somewhat eerie.  Read more.

Hundreds of dead and dying birds littered a quarter-mile stretch of highway in Pointe Coupee Parish on Monday as motorists drove over and around them. State biologists are trying to determine what led to the deaths of the estimated 500 red-winged blackbirds and starlings on La. 1 just down the road from Pointe Coupee Central High School.  Read more.
