Did the Umayyads Change the Qur’an? (Hint: Historians Say ‘Yes’)

“The first complete and authoritative Qur’ān in the history of Islām was compiled by ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān, Muhammad’s third khalīfah (successor) and leader of the nascent Arab-Muslim Empire. This task was carried out two decades after Muhammad’s death, and upon the completion of the ‘Uthmānic Codex (as the standardized Qur’ān became known), all other Qur’ānic materials and manuscripts were burned, whilst the official version was distributed throughout the Arab-Muslim Empire.

According to the idealised orthodox Islāmic religious narrative, the standardized Qur’ān in circulation today is the Mashaf al-‘Uthmānī (‘Uthmānic Codex), but history tells a different story; according to Mediæval Muslim historians and the available evidence, the official Qur’ān in use today underwent a further, post-‘Uthmānic recension, and is in fact the Umayyad Qur’ān.”
