Yesterday at 6:20PM, as Fr. Roger Barthes began to celebrate mass, four youths, aged 14 to 18, broke into the Church of St. Joseph, before launching handfuls of pebbles at 150 faithful present at the service. Immediately, men began pursuing the young troublemakers, but in vain. They managed to vanish into thin air, heading towards the city La Conte.

Interrupted by regrettable unexpected event, Mass was finally able to proceed as planned. Although no one was injured and nothing was broken in the church, located along the Avenue Jean Moulin, the parishioners, many of whom are elderly, were greatly shocked by the disrespectful act of the youths of North African origin….

Philippines: Officials Investigate Cause Of Large Tilapia Fish Kill In Laguna de Bay

“SAN PEDRO, Laguna—The agriculture office in Calamba, Laguna province, on Friday ordered fish pen operators in their coastal area to bury the tons of dead tilapia plucked out from Laguna de Bay.

This was while they were waiting for the results of the water sampling tests by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) at the onset of a fishkill that hit parts of the lake. Results of the water test are expected to come out next week.

Calamba City agriculture officer Severino Caraan said that as of Friday, about 10 metric tons of dead tilapia were recovered from the Laguna Lake, particularly in the coastal villages of Masili and Sucol.

‘The fish pen operators said the fishkill started last week but our office only received their reports on Monday,’ Caraan said.

He said the fishkill has affected more than 20 fish pen operators, who reported losing around 60 kilos of tilapia daily in the past two weeks, equivalent to about P250,000 based on the farmgate price of P25 per kilo.

LLDA information officer Elsie Mistica said fishkills were also reported in Jala-jala, Rizal, and Pangil, Laguna, last week.

Lake officials initially suspected oxygen depletion due to sudden weather changes in which the surface water is pushed down and the bottom water surfaces.

The same had happened in Taal Lake last year killing more than 700 metric tons of milkfish.

‘However, we still have to wait for the water test results to conclude this,’ Mistica said.” Read more.

Washington State Fish Farm Kills Stock After Deadly Virus Found

Associated Press – “BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — A deadly fish virus has been detected in Washington state waters for the first time, forcing a fish farm to kill its entire stock of Atlantic salmon.

Tests this month confirmed the presence of an influenza-like virus called infectious hematopoietic necrosis at a salmon farm off Bainbridge Island across from Seattle on Puget Sound, the Kitsap Sun reported.

The virus, or IHN virus, does not affect humans. It occurs naturally in wild sockeye salmon and can be carried by other fish, such as herring, which sometimes pass through fish net pens.

John Kerwin, fish health supervisor for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, said the virus is a big concern.

‘Any first time it occurs, you don’t fully understand the impact to wild fish,’ Kerwin told the newspaper. ‘We know it can impact (farm) fish. If we move fast, we can try to minimize the amplification.’

Seattle-based American Gold Seafoods plans to remove more than a million pounds of Atlantic salmon from infected net pens in Rich Passage off the southern tip of Bainbridge Island. In April, the company noticed that fish were dying off at a fast rate. Test results this month confirmed the virus.

American Gold Seafoods, affiliated with Icicle Seafoods of Seattle, operates two hatcheries near Rochester, Wash., and has 120 pens off Bainbridge Island, Port Angeles, Cypress Island and Hope Island in Puget Sound.

‘It’s a very, very big loss for us,’ Alan Cook, Icicle’s vice president of aquaculture told the Kitsap Sun.” Read more.

Kenya: Suspected Islamist Detonates Bomb Inside Shopping Mall In Downtown Nairobi

Associated Press – “NAIROBI, Kenya – An explosion ripped through a building full of small shops in downtown Nairobi on Monday, injuring at least 33 people, including a woman who blamed the blast on a ‘bearded man’ who left behind a bag shortly before the detonation.

Police officials first indicated the explosion could have been caused by some sort of electrical malfunction but the prime minister said it was deliberate. Al-Shabab — an Islamist militant group from Somalia — has threatened to carry out such an attack.

‘This is a heinous act,’ Prime Minister Raila Odinga said while visiting the scene of the blast. ‘They want to scare us. But we will not be scared.’…

Speaking to The Associated Press from a Nairobi hospital bed, Irene Wachira said a bearded man came to a nearby stall three times and acted as if he were interested in buying something. Wachira said the third time he came with a bag that he left behind. The blast occurred shortly afterward, she said.

Wachira, a vendor in the building, described the man as ‘Arabic-looking’ because of his relatively light skin. A doctor told AP that another person wounded in the blast said a Somali-looking man left behind the bag. The doctor said he could not be quoted by name…

‘We condemn the terrorists and tell them their days are numbered,’ said Odinga, who is expected to run for president in next year’s election.

Al-Shabab threaten to carry out large-scale attacks here followed Kenya’s decision last October to send troops into Somalia to pursue the Islamist militants. Kenya said back then that it was sending in the troops as a response to kidnappings on Kenyan soil last year blamed on al-Shabab. The kidnappings caused tourism in Kenya to plummet, especially around the coastal resort of Lamu.

Since October, a series of grenade attacks has rocked Kenya. The latest happened Saturday night in the sprawling Dadaab refugee camp near the Somali border. Six people were injured in two simultaneous grenades blasts, officials said.” Read more.

Christian Leader In Nigeria: Radical Islamists Cannot Be Defeated, ‘They Are Out To Wipe Out Christians And Jews’

By Abdul-Rahman Abubakar – “Former Primate of the Anglican Communion, Peter Akinola, has told President Goodluck Jonathan that the Boko Haram insurgents cannot be defeated as they are out to wipe out Christians and Jews.

He spoke at the National Christian Centre Abuja during a special inter-denominational service to mark this year’s Democracy Day.

In his sermon titled: ‘Know the truth and the truth shall set you free,’ Akinola said the sect has been in existence since 1966 and cannot be defeated by the Federal Government.

He said Nigerians should not be deceived by the antics of Boko Haram, saying the sect is involved in a Jihad against Christians.

According to the cleric, ‘We have ignored the truth. Boko Haram must be seen in the right context. It is a continuation of the past. Shun all political claims that Boko Haram is not against Christianity. It is. It has been going on since 1966. They are committed to Jihad. You can’t stop them.

Responding, Jonathan said in spite of the security challenges posed by the Boko Haram, the country will remain indivisible.

Jonathan said, ‘No individual or group no matter their ambition or selfish purpose will be able to divide this nation. Nigeria will never disintegrate.'” Read more.

Pakistan: Four Girls, Two Boys Sentenced To Death … For Dancing

The News Tribe – “Kohistan: A tribal court in Kohistan district of Khyber Pakhunkhwa has handed down death penalty to six people, including four girls and two boy for dancing in a wedding party.

The Jirga issued a decree after a mobile phone video emerged of the six in a remote village.

AFP news agency said Pakistani authorities in the area said local clerics had ordered the punishment over allegations that the men and women danced and sang together in Gada village, in defiance of strict tribal customs that separate men and women at weddings.

‘It was decided that the men will be killed first, but they ran away so the women are safe for the moment. I have sent a team to rescue them and am waiting to hear some news,’ a police officer told the news agency, adding that the women had been confined to their homes.

Mali Islamist Rebels Join Forces, Plan To Create Islamic State

By Anne Look, Voice of America – “BAMAKO – Tuareg rebels and Islamist militants have joined forces in northern Mali and say they will create an independent Islamist state. The groups took advantage of a military coup in Bamako to seize control of the territory in early April. Resistance is growing in the north to the efforts to introduce Islamic law.

In the northern Malian town of Gao, court is in session.

Commissioner Abdoulaye Maiga begins by reading from the Quran in the roadside courtyard outside the former police station.

Once an area businessman, Maiga is a member of the militant Islamist sect Ansar Dine that residents say dominates the town.

This morning, Maiga hears the case of a man accused of letting his animals graze in his neighbors’ fields. The accused confesses, says he has settled previous infractions by bribing authorities. This time, he promises to compensate his neighbors for damages to their crops. The deal is accepted.

The commissioner hears other cases, including those of two men, one accused of adultery and the other of drunkenness. No witnesses were called. A VOA reporter watched as the sentences, 80 lashes each, were carried out on the spot.

Gao is one of three northern strongholds that fell to Tuareg separatists and Islamist militants during the chaos that followed a March 22 military coup in Bamako.

The two groups joined forces in late May and say they will create an independent Islamic state in what is now nearly two-thirds of Mali’s national territory. Ansar Dine is already imposing its brand of Islamic law in the north.” Read more.

Peru: Thousands Of Shellfish Found Dead Off The Coast Of Lima, Warm Water Blamed

AFP – “Thousands of crustaceans were found dead off the coast of Lima following the mystery mass death of dolphins and pelicans, the Peruvian Navy said Friday.

The cause of death is under investigation, said Industry and Fishing Minister Gladys Triveno, warning that ‘it would be premature to give a reason for this phenomenon.’

The Navy said it presented a report on the find to the Agency of Environmental Evaluation and Control to determine the cause.

Biologist Yuri Hooker of Cayetano Heredia University said the species found on Pucusana Beach, 60 kilometers (37 miles) south of Lima, was a type of red krill about three centimeters (1.2 inches) long.

‘They live mostly along the coast of Chile up to the coast of northern Peru. What is happening is that these crustaceans are being affected by the warming of Pacific waters in the north of the country,’ he said, adding that the phenomenon occurs ‘with some frequency.’

Hooker explained that the warmer temperatures led the shrimp-like creatures that usually live far away from the coast to move in closer to land, where they died.

Nearly 900 dolphins washed up along Peru’s northern coast between February and April. A government study said the marine mammals died of natural causes, while environmental groups insist the massive toll was linked to offshore oil exploration in the area.

Peruvian officials have suggested that the dolphins, along with 5,000 dead sea birds — mostly pelicans — died due to the effects of rising temperatures in Pacific waters, including the southern migration of fish eaten by the birds.” Source – France24.

Lloyd’s Of London Preparing For Euro Collapse As Greece Is Warned Of Possible Public Finances Collapse

By Andrew Cave, The Telegraph – “Richard Ward said the London market had put in place a contingency plan to switch euro underwriting to multi-currency settlement if Greece abandoned the euro.

In an interview with The Sunday Telegraph he also revealed that Lloyd’s could have to take writedowns on its £58.9bn investment portfolio if the eurozone collapses.

Europe accounts for 18pc of Lloyd’s £23.5bn of gross written premiums, mostly in France, Germany, Spain and Italy. The market also has a fledgling operation in Poland.

Lloyd’s move comes as a major Franco-German provider of credit insurance for eurozone trade, Euler Hermes, said it was considering reducing cover for trade with Greece because of the risk the country might leave the eurozone.

When a company goes bust, it is often sparked by withdrawal of credit insurance for suppliers wanting to trade with it.

A spokesman for Euler Hermes, Bettina Sattler, told Bloomberg: ‘The outcome of the new elections in June remains highly uncertain. Consequently, the situation is further deteriorating. The risk of Greece exiting the eurozone has been revived.

‘In light of the recent developments, Euler Hermes will most probably have to switch to a more prudent approach. [We have] maintained a high level of cover for [our] customers until today. But now we are confronted with a changing situation.’

Lloyd’s fears are likely to be shared by a number of European businesses, which are watching developments in Greece.” Read more.

Greece warned of public finances collapse – “Greece’s public finances could collapse as early as next month, leaving salaries and pensions unpaid unless a stable government emerges from the June 17 election, according to Lucas Papademos, the technocrat prime minister who left office after this month’s inconclusive vote. Mr Papademos warned that conditions were deteriorating faster than expected with cash flow likely to turn negative in early June amid a sharp fall in tax revenues and a loosening of spending controls during two back-to-back election campaigns.” Read more.

Tanzania: Zanzibar Islamists Riot, Burn Down Christian Churches (Again)

Over the past ten years, Islam has erupted like an angry volcano — particularly since the rise of the “Arab Spring” in 2011 — with Christian persecution and the elimination of Christian places of worship yet again and again in Zanzibar and elsewhere becoming a spontaneous, habitual Islamist tendency. Considering all the layers of ashes now accumulating throughout the Muslim world, it seems to me that we have a convincingly good reason for Webster’s to now include “Islam” alongside its definitions of “destruction” and “lawlessness” …

By Fumbuka Ng’wanakilala, Reuters – “Hundreds of supporters of a separatist Islamist group set fire to two churches and clashed with police during protests in Zanzibar over the weekend against the arrest of senior members of the movement, police and witnesses said.

Police accused the Uamsho (Awakening) group of ordering its supporters on to the streets – but the movement’s leadership denied having any part in the unrest.

Clashes broke out in the historic commercial and tourism centre of Stone Town on Saturday night and continued until Sunday afternoon, witnesses told Reuters.

The reports of attacks on churches will raise fears of an escalation in religious tensions in the predominantly Muslim island ruled by a semi-autonomous secular government. Several bars were attacked last year.

Shops remained closed and people stayed in their homes on Sunday as riot police patrolled the streets of Stone Town, witnesses said.

‘There is a lot of tension, people are hiding in their houses. All the streets are empty, it’s the only the police who are out there,’ resident Mai Zuberi told Reuters by phone.

‘There were clashes all night on Saturday and the violence continued until noon today. All the roads were blocked in the Stone Town area,’ Zuberi added.” Read more.

Macedonia: Thousands Of Muslim Demonstrators In Skopje Demand ‘Death To Christians’

Christians in Macedonia are murdered by Muslims, the Islamic community says nothing. The Muslims responsible for the murders are arrested, the Islamic community organizes mass demonstrations calling for jihad and the release of their “brothers” …

“Back in March, PI reported about the numerous outbreaks of violence between the Muslim-Albanian minority and the non-Muslim-Slavic majority in Macedonia. Currently, the situation appears to be heightening once again after a series of murders of Christians. As Austrian news magazine ‘Unzensuriert’ (‘Uncensored’) reports, in the Macedonian capital city of Skopje, slogans like ‘Allahu akbar,’ ‘Death to Christians,’ and ‘Jihad’ were shouted by several thousand Moslems in a demonstration parade after the traditional Friday prayers. The special thing about this is: Skopje is the home of the German ‘exemplary’ imam Bajrambejamin Idriz. His father has preached lifelong as an imam at the Jaja Pascha mosque from which the current aggressive demonstrations start…

‘Unzensuriert’ describes executions of Christians, with seeming confidence that they were carried out by Moslems:

On April 12th, the eve of the highest Orthodox holiday, Good Friday, the bodies of five ethnic Macedonians were discovered in a pond in a northeastern suburb of Skopje. The bodies of four men aged around 20 years lay very neatly arranged next to each other and showed evidence of shots in the front and behind – an unavoidable indication of an organized execution. The fifth victim, a man around 45 years, who was an apparent witness of the incident lay a little farther away beside them.

Even though the evidence for the offenses by three arrested Moslems is ‘earth moving’ according to the Macedonian interior ministry, masses of Moslems demonstrated against the arrest of their fellow believers.” Read more.

Nigeria: Silent Killings Of Christians Thriving In The North, ‘Door To Door, Shop To Shop, Church To Church’

BY OKON BASSEY AND JOHN SHIKLAM – “National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has raised the alarm over silent and unreported killings of Christians in the North.

This however came on a day pandemonium broke out at the busy Ahmadu Bello Way in Kaduna metropolis following a bomb scare, which made residents and traders along the area scamper for safety.

Oritsejafor who called on leaders of all the blocks of CAN across the nation to organise prayers and fasting of all denominations in the country to overcome its security challenges due to the activity of the Boko Haran sect, said it was imperative for Christians to be security conscious at all times.

Consequently, he directed that June 16 of every year should be observed as a special day in the Christian calendar for prayer and fasting for the country.

The CAN President who made the call in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, during an extra-ordinary national council meeting of CAN, specifically, disclosed that a Pastor in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, contacted him complaining that the ‘killing is going on from door to door.’

‘We owe our brother in the North prayers and solidarity. How can I keep quite when my people are killed every day? We cannot fold our hands; Nigeria belongs to all of us. We believe this country will change. I got a text message by 6 a.m. yesterday (Tuesday) from a Pastor in Maiduguri, he said my President, please don’t stop praying for us, the killing is going from door to door, shop to shop, church to church.

‘But these things are no longer heard on television. Nobody talks about it. It is only when police station is burnt or bomb explosion that catches people’s attention. My President people are dying everyday, don’t stop praying for us,’ he said.

Oritsejafor, in an emotion laden voice said: ‘Prayer is the key to opening all doors and shutting the door on Boko Haram. In fact I want to say that we remember the June 16, as a special day of prayer and fasting and many more days for prayers and fasting for this country. But definitely, the June 16 is one day that we will cry to God for our great nation.'” Read more.
