‘Health Implications Are Significant’: Antibiotic Resistant Gonorrhea ‘Superbug’ Spreading, May Be Headed For America

06/08/2012 Leave a comment

By Alice G. Walton, Forbes – “In the battle between man and bacteria, we seem to be losing ground. A new World Health Organization statement cautions that around the globe, gonorrhea is becoming more and more resistant to antibiotics. Approximately 106 million people are infected with gonorrhea each year (700,000 of these cases are estimated to occur in the U.S.), and fewer are responding to the treatments that once easily killed it. The organism has indeed become a ‘superbug,’ so what do we do now?

Historically, gonorrhea was an easily treatable STD, responding to a number of antibiotics, including sulfonilamides, penicillin, tetracycline, and ciprofloxacin. However, the last resort drug cephalosporin has also become largely ineffective, according to the WHO, which means that we’re about out of options. Antibiotic-resistant cases of gonorrhea have shown up in Australia, France, Japan, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom. Resistant bugs have not been seen in the U.S., but how long it will stay this way is anyone’s guess.

The WHO’s Dr. Manjula Lusti-Narasimhan said that ‘the available data only shows the tip of the iceberg. Without adequate surveillance we won’t know the extent of resistance to gonorrhoea and without research into new antimicrobial agents, there could soon be no effective treatment for patients.’…

‘We are very concerned about recent reports of treatment failure from the last effective treatment option – the class of cephalosporin antibiotics – as there are no new therapeutic drugs in development,’ says Dr Lusti-Narasimhan. ‘If gonococcal infections become untreatable, the health implications are significant.'” Read more.

Congo-Kinshasa: Cholera Outbreak Worsens, Nearly 400 Now Dead

06/08/2012 Leave a comment

“Kinshasa — A growing cholera outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed nearly 400 lives and affected more than 19,100 people since January, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

‘The total number of cholera cases in 2012 is around 90 percent of cases reported last year. Since January 2011, 983 people have died from the outbreak affecting eight of 11 provinces of the country,’ Yvon Edoumou, OCHA spokesman, told a news conference.

Since the outbreak started, more than 40,795 cases have been reported. Edoumou said the growing epidemic had put a strain on ongoing humanitarian interventions funded mainly by a US$9.1 million grant by the UN Central Emergency Response Fund, which provides rapid response grants for humanitarian emergencies.

Experts have blamed the continued spread of cholera in the DRC on poor hygiene, lack of awareness about transmission mechanisms, limited access to protected and monitored water sources and a general lack of sanitation infrastructure.” Source – allAfrica.com.

US State Department Purges Religious Freedom Section From Its Human Rights Reports

06/08/2012 3 comments

And come this November, it’ll be time for the American people to purge the current administration from the White House …

By Pete Winn, CNSNews.com – “The U.S. State Department removed the sections covering religious freedom from the Country Reports on Human Rights that it released on May 24, three months past the statutory deadline Congress set for the release of these reports.

The new human rights reports–purged of the sections that discuss the status of religious freedom in each of the countries covered–are also the human rights reports that include the period that covered the Arab Spring and its aftermath.

Thus, the reports do not provide in-depth coverage of what has happened to Christians and other religious minorities in predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East that saw the rise of revolutionary movements in 2011 in which Islamist forces played an instrumental role.

For the first time ever, the State Department simply eliminated the section of religious freedom in its reports covering 2011 and instead referred the public to the 2010 International Religious Freedom Report – a full two years behind the times – or to the annual report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which was released last September and covers events in 2010 but not 2011.

Leonard Leo, who recently completed a term as chairman of the USCIRF, says that removing the sections on religious freedom from the State Department’s Country Reports on Human Roghts is a bad idea.

Since 1998, when Congress created USCIRF, the State Department has been required to issue a separate yearly report specifically on International Religious Freedom.

But a section reporting on religious freedom has also always been included in the State Department’s legally required annual country-by-country reports on human rights–that is, until now.

And this is the first year the State Department would have needed to report on the effect the Arab Spring has had on religious freedom in the Middle East–had its reports, as always before, included a section on religious freedom.” Read more.

Flashback: Obama’s Christian Problem – White House Overlooks Christian Persecution While Pandering to Islam – “The Obama administration has been obsessed with Muslim outreach and recently tried to mend fences with the Jewish community. Given the state of the world, however, the White House ought to be focused on helping the world’s oppressed Christians. The United States has been wary to intervene in matters affecting Christians in the Middle East for fear of validating terrorist narratives that the West is engaged in a new crusade against Islam. The result of this passive policy has been to allow Islamic extremists increasingly to dominate the debate, often with tragic consequences.” Read more.

Pundits would lambaste the church, the White House would rush out a statement of deep concern, and rioters in the Middle East would kill each other in their grief. But when the most influential leader in the Muslim world issues a fatwa to destroy Christian churches, the silence is deafening.” Read more.

Al-Qaeda: ‘Raise Your Children In The Cult Of Jihad And Martyrdom … Instil In Them A Love For Religion And Death’

06/08/2012 1 comment

Revelation 6:8a, “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth …”

Revelation 20:14a, “And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire …”

Proverbs 8:35-36, “For whoever finds me finds life, And obtains favor from the LORD … All those who hate me love death.”

The mere thought of children being sacrificed today to demons would be so revolting that even the liberal left would raise their voice in disgust, but when children are raised to be sacrificed to the god of Islam their voice is conspicuously silent …

Middle East Online – “SANAA – The wife of Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri has congratulated Muslim women for the role they have played in the Arab Spring and urged them to raise their children for jihad.

‘I congratulate all Muslim women for these blessed revolutions,’ Umaima Hassan Ahmed Mohammed Hassan wrote in a letter posted on the Al-Fajr website on Friday.

‘I advise you to raise your children in the cult of jihad and martyrdom and to instil in them a love for religion and death,’ she wrote.

In doing so, ‘each woman would raise her child to be a new Saladin by telling him ‘it is you who will restore the grandeur of the Islamic nation and you will liberate Jerusalem.”

Saladin was a 12th century Kurdish general who became the first sultan of Egypt and whose forces defeated Crusader armies in a battle that led to the eventual fall of the Christian Kingdom of Jerusalem.

The text also counseled women to continue to wear the veil and to encourage their husbands and sons to ‘free the prisoners wherever they are… such as the widows of our martyr Osama bin Laden, who are languishing with their children in a Pakistani prison.’

The last passage indicates that the message was written before Bin Laden’s widows and children were expelled from Pakistan at the end of April.” Source – Middle East Online.

Israel: UFO Or Missile? Mystery Spiraling Lights Raise Havoc In Israel

06/08/2012 Leave a comment

RT – “A spaceship flying over Israel? A satellite or a Russian ballistic missile? An unidentified flying object observed in Middle East countries Thursday night has caused panic, with people calling the police to say they witnessed a UFO.

The mysterious shining object seen in the skies swirled around and looked like smoke, some observers said. The object gave off light and was followed by a smoke trail.

The strange flying phenomenon was also reported in Georgia, Armenia, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and other countries in the region.

The Israeli Defense Forces made a statement following the incident saying they were unaware of any operations in the area.

Some astronomical experts conjectured that the object was a satellite that had exploded in orbit, the Times of Israel reports. The newspaper also quoted a Lebanese report suggesting that the flying item was the remains of a meteorite, with its smashed pieces creating a dust trail that glowed behind it.

Prominent Israeli astronomer Dr. Yigal Pat-El, who is chairman of the Israeli Astronomical Association and an observatory director, told the Ediot Ahronot newspaper it is quite possible that the object was a ballistic missile.” Read more.

Australia: Hundreds Of Birds Found Dead In Melbourne Suburbs

06/08/2012 Leave a comment

By Georgie Haberfield, Maroondah Leader – “THE Department of Sustainability and Environment has urged people not to feed native birds after hundreds were found dead in the eastern suburbs.

The suspected cause was bacterial bowel infection necrotic enteritis.

DSE biodiversity incident planning officer Kirsty Greengrass said the infection was easily spread.

‘The disease is spread through droppings from sick birds and a single sick bird can easily pass it on to healthy birds congregating at feed sites,’ Ms Greengrass said.

Birds have enough natural food available.

Dead birds should be disposed of by using a plastic bag as a glove, then double bagged and put in the bin.

Birds should not be buried because dogs or cats may dig them up.” Source – Maroondah Leader.

Missouri Mystery: More Than 10,000 Carp Found Dead In Blue Springs Lake

06/08/2012 Leave a comment

By Mitch Weber, KSHB – “BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Missouri conservationists are trying to solve a mystery in an area lake.

What started as a couple dozen dead carp turned into more than 10,000 in Blue Springs Lake.

Conservationists took water samples and couldn’t figure out exactly what caused the deaths. Their samples have now gone onto a national lab for further analysis.

Between 500 and 1,000 carp have been killed everyday. Jake Allman, a biologist with the Missouri Conservation, started noticing carp with lesions under their scales the last few weeks.

‘There’s a little bacteria on the fish, but not enough to really have caused this,’ Allman said. ‘This feeding activity where they are brushing up against each other can actually spread whatever is making them sick.’

If Allman had his way, this kill would only continue.

‘Their spawning activity disrupts spawning of other fish. They root around in the shallows and uproot aquatic vegetation which is beneficial to native fish,’ Allman explained.

But it seems the carp are now starting to recover.

Lake officials are now keeping an eye on the E. coli levels in the water.

They had to close a swimming area during Memorial Day Weekend because of a threat of E. Coli from of all the dead fish.” Source – KSHB.

China Faces ‘Serious’ Epidemic Of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis

06/07/2012 Leave a comment

AFP – “China faces a ‘serious epidemic’ of drug-resistant tuberculosis according to the first-ever nationwide estimate of the size of the problem there, said a new US-published study.

‘In 2007, one third of the patients with new cases of tuberculosis and one half of the patients with previously treated tuberculosis had drug-resistant disease,’ said the study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Even more, the prevalence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB in new cases (5.7 percent) was nearly twice the global average, said the study.

Using World Health Organization figures as a basis for comparison, ‘China has the highest annual number of cases of MDR tuberculosis in the world — a quarter of the cases worldwide,’ it added.

‘China has a serious epidemic of drug-resistant tuberculosis.’

The data came from a survey of more than 4,600 Chinese people who were recently diagnosed or treated for TB.

Patients for the study were treated at local TB clinics, not hospitals, and the survey was conducted by the National Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory (NTRL) of the Chinese Centers for Disease Control.

According to an accompanying editorial by Johns Hopkins University infectious disease specialist Richard Chaisson, the growth of drug-resistant TB presents an ‘enormous challenge.’

Even more concerning was the finding that most of the 110,000 drug-resistant cases were in people newly diagnosed with the disease, suggesting that the virulent bacteria are being transmitted from person to person and not developing solely as a result of a person prematurely stopping treatment.” Read more.

UK: Mystery Surrounds Death Of 5,000 Fish, ‘This Is Catastrophic’

06/07/2012 Leave a comment

The Sentinel – “THOUSANDS of fish have died after the lake they were in was contaminated.

Residents discovered the dead fish at Madeley Pool yesterday morning and spent the rest of the day trying to oxygenate the water to save other fish which were still alive.

Buckets, paddling pools and even a baby bath were brought in to house the rescued fish.

It is not yet known what caused the death of the others.

The pool has been closed to fishing and upcoming matches will be cancelled.

Ralph Parsons, chairman of Madeley Pool Angling Club, which manages the pool, said: ‘We normally have between 7,000 and 10,000 fish in the pool. At least 5,000 of them must have died.

‘The whole pool looked like a carpet with fish on the surface struggling to breathe.

‘It is a close-knit community and we are a local club so everyone has pulled their finger out to try to do what they can.

‘We have tried to take out as many alive fish as we can, but there is only so long they will last in paddling pools.

‘They have been dying by the minute but we can’t take them anywhere in case they contaminate other fish.’

Representatives from the Environmental Agency and Newcastle Borough Council were contacted.

Tests are being carried out to determine the cause, but the results have not yet come back…

‘Loads of us went out to try to catch the ones which were still alive. Even little kids were out with their fishing nets. We put them into boxes, containers and even paddling pools to try to keep them alive, but they’ll be lucky if they survive. It’s awful.’

Parish councillor Ann Spilsbury said: ‘This is catastrophic. It is a well-stocked pool and a lot of cost, time and effort goes into looking after it.'” Read more.

Malaysian Clerics Ban Sale Of Soccer Jerseys Containing ‘Dangerous’ Cross Symbol, ‘You Are Only Promoting The Devil’

06/06/2012 Leave a comment

1 Corinthians 1:18, “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

Isaiah 5:20-21, 24, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness… who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight… as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust …”

Promotes the devil

By Joseph Mayton, Bikyamasr – “ELAKA, Malaysia: The small street seller had all the European club jerseys ready for sale on Saturday evening, as passersby wanted to grab their favorite international shirt ahead of this month’s Euro 2012. But for Portugal fans, the jersey was nowhere to be found.

‘We are not allowed to sell the jersey because it shows a cross,’ the shopkeeper told Bikyamasr.com. ‘I still love Portugal and will be rooting for them, but we are an Islamic country and don’t want to get people angry,’ he added.

While it is not officially banned in the country, a number of Islamic clerics have voiced their concern over the jersey, which has a large cross on the front, highlighting Portugal’s Catholic faith. But in Malaysia, symbols often find themselves under attack by the country’s virulent Muslim clerics.

However, one fan, who recently returned from a short trip to Thailand sports his Ronaldo jersey with pride. ‘I don’t care what those people say, this is just football and not religion,’ he said.

Portugal is not the only jersey to be pulled from the shelves. Brazil, which also boasts a large cross, has been barred by clerics. Manchester United, the world’s most popular club team, has also sparked the ire of clerics in the Southeast Asian country over its nickname, the Red Devils.

Despite the Old Trafford side having an estimated 81 million followers in Asia, one senior cleric said: ‘You are only promoting the devil.’

‘This is very dangerous. As a Muslim we should not worship the symbols of other religions or the devils,’ another added, in a Forbes report.

‘It will erode our belief in Islam. There is no reason why we as Muslims should wear such jerseys, either for sports or fashion reasons.’

Either way, Malaysians are gearing up for Europe’s continental tournament and are picking up their team’s jerseys in large numbers.

‘We are getting most of these sold all the time because of the tournament, so it’s good for business,’ added the shopkeeper.

But not for Portugal fans.” Source – Bikyamasr.

Norhayati Kaprawi is a Malaysian activist whose recent documentary Aku Siapa (Who Am I) deals with the issue of how women in Malaysia should dress. Australia: At Least 1,400 Fish Found Dead Along 8 Mile Stretch Of Swan River

06/06/2012 Leave a comment

By JANE HAMMOND, The West Australian – “More than 1,400 fish have gone belly-up in the Swan River since June 1.

The fish, mostly black bream have been found in a 13km stretch of the river between Bassendean and West Swan.

Swimmers have been warned to avoid the water, not to catch or eat sluggish or dead fish found in the river and to keep pets away from the dead or dying fish.

Parts of the water have turned red and a fishy odour has also been reported associated with a deadly algal bloom.

The deaths are thought to be associated with levels of the potentially fish-killing microalgae Karlodinium veneficum in the upper Swan River.

Microalgae activity levels reported in the Trust’s weekly Microalgae Activity Report have been kept on alert since May 24.

A spokeswoman for the Swan River Trust said officers were on the river today undertaking a cleanup operation.

‘The oxygenation plants at Guildford and Caversham are continuing to be operated to maintain oxygen levels, which is critical as the algae affects the capacity of fish to extract oxygen from the water.

‘The algae is still prevalent in the area, but declining in density,’ a statement on the Trust’s website said.

Karlodinium microalga is found in most West Australian waterways and tends to increase in density between mid-summer and autumn.

‘The Karlodinium veneficum does not present a direct risk to public health but sensible precautions should be taken,’ the statement said.

The fish kill is the second major event of its type this year and follows the death of more than 4000 fish in the river in late January.” Source – The West Australian.
