Raining Dead Birds in Forest Hill, Michigan

04/01/2011 Leave a comment

By LINDA GITTLEMAN – “The first time Kelly Brecht of Forest Hill found seven dead birds in her yard last year, she freaked.

‘I thought it was a sign from God that I was being bad,’ she said. ‘I like birds, I have bird feeders. I was really freaking.’

This year, within the last few weeks, she’s had ‘triple, quadruple the number of dead birds. And stray cats are opening them up and eating them.’

One neighbor cleaned up two garbage bags full of the dead birds, she said.

They are all starlings and they aren’t the most popular of the species.” Read more.

By DANIEL BATES – “Few of us ever come to terms with the idea of bed bugs infesting their house and home.

But now a new threat is on the rise that is arguably worse – stink bugs.

Sightings of the brown marmorated stink bug have been reported in 33 states so far this year, a rise of eight since fall alone.

The pest appears to be spreading from its traditional home in the mid-Atlantic coast throughout America, experts said.

The only areas to escape the epidemic are the Rockies and the Plains but everywhere else homeowners have found thousands of the dime-sized creatures infesting their homes in beds and in sofas.”  Read more.

By SABRINA CANFIELD – “GRAND ISLE, La. (CN) – A billboard on Highway 1 says: Devastating Spill, Devastating Feelings. Inside the Gulf Coast Claims Facility building on the far end of Grand Isle, about 60 people have turned out for a National Resource Damage Assessment public scoping meeting. ‘You talk about 18 months or so before we get started,’ a resident tell trustees. ‘That’s a long time for us who live here, while our environment and animals are dying.’

‘We have a huge problem,’ Beverly Armand, continues. ‘We have to stop denying it. We can’t fix the problem if we deny it is there.’

The National Resource Damage Assessment, or NRDA, is being conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, the Department of the Interior, and the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.”  Read more.

Fatal and Severe H1N1 Cases In Mexico Increase

“Of those confirmed, three were in stable clinical condition, one in serious condition and four people have died. Of those confirmed four are hospitalized and nine others convalescing at home.

Confirmed cases of influenza, by age group, under four a range of 15 to 24 years, eight to a group of 25 to 44 and five more to an age ranging between 45 and 64 years of age.

The above translation provides additional detail on the updated list of H1N1 confirmed cases in Mexico. Over half were hospitalized or died, raising concerns that the H1N1 involved in these cases represents a more virulent sub-clade and may have a significantly difference sequence than the sub-clades described previously. Similar frequencies were seen in the cases from the Juarez Traffic Department where most cases are not yet confirmed. The cluster has grown to five including two deaths and one critical case. Thus, that cluster also has more than half of the cases hospitalized with at least half of hospitalized patients dying.”  Read more.

“SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IRN) – Radiation believed to be from the nuclear plant disaster in Japan has been detected in Illinois.

The radioactive iodine similar to what was released in Japan was found in a grass clipping in the Joliet area by the Radiological Assessment Field Team, which regularly checks on vegetation, air, milk and eggs to determine if any radiation is leaking from Illinois’ nuclear reactors.

In this case, the grass clippings were taken as part of a drill for the emergency plan at the Dresden nuclear power plant.”  Read more.

Koran Burning Rage: Pakistani Islamists Behead Two UN Workers, Kill Up To 20

04/01/2011 Leave a comment

“(Reuters) – Afghan protesters angered by the burning of a Koran by an obscure U.S. pastor killed up to 20 U.N. staff, beheading two foreigners, when they over-ran a compound in a normally peaceful northern city on Friday in the worst ever attack on the U.N. in Afghanistan.

At least eight foreigners were among the dead after attackers took out security guards, burned parts of the compound and climbed up blast walls to topple a guard tower, said Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a police spokesman for the northern region.

Five protesters were also killed and around 20 wounded.

The governor of Balkh province said insurgents had used the march as cover to attack the compound, in a battle that raged for several hours and raises serious questions about plans to make the city a pilot for security transfer to national forces.”  Read more.

There’s A New Holocaust Taking Place, But This Time It’s Against Christians

03/31/2011 Leave a comment

By Alan Caruba – “The Holocaust of the last century is remembered for the mass murder of Europe’s Jewish population, an estimated six million who perished. In total, an estimated eleven to seventeen million Europeans, Jews and Christians, died in the Nazi concentration and death camps or were murdered outright in their homelands.

Records were lost or didn’t list religion, but the lesser known story of the Holocaust was the death of millions of Christians, three million of whom were Poles, predominantly Catholics, killed by the Nazis for being Poles. They have a special place in Jewish history because many Poles, risking immediate execution if caught, were among the “righteous Gentiles” who were rescuers of Jews.

I cite this because there is a new Holocaust abroad in the world and it is directed at Christians, particularly in the Middle East and throughout Africa, wherever Islam is the dominant religion. Nor is this is a new phenomenon; Christians were widely persecuted under the Ottomans (Turks) when their empire encompassed much of the Middle East

It is clearly manifesting itself again and to far too little notice.”  Read more.

Latest al-Qaida Magazine Praises Arab Revolutions

Steve Emerson – “Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula released its fifth issue of Inspire Magazine, with a clear explanation of its views about upheaval in the Middle East and what that means for the organization’s aim to retake the Holy Land.

While uprisings in Bahrain, Egypt and elsewhere in the region have been peaceful, several articles in the issue stake the claim that such popular actions somehow validate al-Qaida’s violent ethos.

‘The cover of this issue is about the Tsunami of change that is sweeping the Arab world. With the removal of the despots, the ummah [nation] will speak its voice, and when it does, it will chant: Here we start and in al-Aqsa [Jerusalem] we’ll meet,’ says Yahya Ibrahim in the introductory article.” Read more.

Fukushima Could Lead To A Tragedy Far Beyond Chernobyl, Creating Permanent Dead-Zones in Japan

Dr Michio Kaku: “This is huge.  For the first time they’re [the Japanese government] using that dreaded word ‘breach’, meaning uncontrolled release of radiation into the environment.  And remember that unit 3, which is suspected to have the breach, contains plutonium.  Plutonium is the most toxic chemical known to science.  A spec of plutonium — a millionth of a gram — could cause cancer if it’s ingested, and so this has to be looked at very carefully because if there is a full abandonment of the reactor site, if they abandon ship, we could be in free fall.”

Israeli Map Shows Nearly 1,000 Hezbollah Sites

Way to go, UN.  Glad to see that you’re enforcing UNSC Resolution 1701 and disarming Hezbollah.  If the United Neandertha, er, Nations doesn’t take its own resolutions seriously, why should anyone?

By AMY TEIBEL – “JERUSALEM — The Israeli military on Thursday released a map detailing what it says are nearly 1,000 underground bunkers, weapons storage facilities and monitoring sites built by the militant Hezbollah guerrillas in southern Lebanon.

Many of the sites on the map are located south of the Litani River in Lebanon, the zone where Hezbollah is banned from keeping weapons under the U.N.-sponsored truce that ended Israel’s summer 2006 war with the guerrilla group.

An article on the military spokesman’s website says Hezbollah has set up some 550 bunkers, 300 monitoring sites and 100 weapons storage facilities. The facilities are located in 270 villages, and many are located near hospitals, private homes and schools, the military said in a statement published on its website.”  Read more.

Dead Fish Fill Missoula Duck Pond, Montana

03/31/2011 1 comment

By Skylar Browning – “Visitors to the duck pond on the south side of town will find a pretty gross scene: more dead fish than actual ducks.

Roughly 50 dead fish are visibly floating on the surface of the small pond. Neighbors first noticed the issue and reported it to Missoula Parks and Rec yesterday. This morning, Parks and Rec recovered one of the fish and sent it to Fish, Wildlife and Parks for testing.

‘We don’t know what caused it. We don’t even know what kind of fish it is,’ says Morgan Valliant, the city’s conservation lands manager. ‘Right now, we don’t know much except that they’re there.'”  Read more.
