Here’s an update on this story. It may have sounded like a good idea at first, but McDonald’s execs are now left with a bitter taste in their mouths after offering halal menu items in Dearbornistan. This win may encourage others to engage in yet another form of lawsuit jihad, but whether or not other halal-serving restaurants and food distributors begin rethinking their efforts to bow down to Allah and the best of peoples, however, remains to be seen …

By Niraj Warikoo, Detroit Free Press – “DETROIT — There have been only two McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. that have offered halal food. Both were in east Dearborn, Mich., which has a sizable population of Arab-American Muslims.

But after a contentious lawsuit that accused the restaurant chain of selling non-halal items advertised as halal, McDonald’s has yanked its Halal Chicken McNuggets and Halal McChicken sandwiches off the menu. The move brings to an end a unique product that made the two McDonald’s restaurants popular with Muslims.

‘Those items have been discontinued as a result of our continued efforts to focus on our national core menu,’ a spokesman for McDonald’s said Friday.

At one of the two restaurants, the Ford Road location, a sign in Arabic and English on its drive-through menu informs customers that halal items are no longer available. The decision to discontinue the products after a 12-year run drew a mixed reaction in Dearborn: Some were disappointed, while others said it was a good move because McDonald’s had problems before with selling halal food.

The removal of the halal items, which was done last month, comes after a lawsuit filed in 2011 alleging that the fast-food restaurant was selling non-halal chicken it claimed was halal. Halal is the Muslim equivalent of kosher, requiring that meat be prepared according to Islamic guidelines, such as reciting a prayer while the animal is cut. In some cases, employees at the Ford Road location were mistakenly giving non-halal products to customers who asked for halal ones.

A $700,000 settlement was reached in April that allocated $275,000 to the Huda Clinic, a Muslim health center in Detroit; $150,000 to the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn, and $25,000 to Ahmed Ahmed, a Dearborn Heights man who filed the lawsuit against McDonald’s. Lewis, The Daily Caller – “An event held yesterday in Concord, New Hampshire by out-of-state supporters of Mike Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns movement turned ugly when a 2nd Amendment activist (who was protesting the event) was arrested. But buried in the Union Leader story was an arguably more interesting nugget.

During the rally, supporters of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns read the names of those ‘killed with guns’ since the Dec. 14 Newtown shootings — and Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev’s name was reportedly memorialized among the names of the dead. (Tsarnaev, of course, was killed in a police shootout.)

“Some of the loudest shouts came when a reader spoke the name of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects who was killed by police during a gunfight.

Although the incident was buried in the paper, the Union Leader’s editorial page editor Drew Cline sent out this tweet, which I think sums up how radical some of the anti-gun positions are:

Associated Press – “BELTON, TX — Someone threatened to bomb a county courthouse near Fort Hood unless officials met the ‘demands’ of the Army psychiatrist charged in the 2009 shooting rampage on the Texas Army post, a sheriff said Wednesday.

After the Wednesday morning call that mentioned Maj. Nidal Hasan, law officers evacuated the historic courthouse and Bell County Justice Center, but found nothing after searching extensively with bomb-sniffing dogs, Bell County Sheriff Eddy Lange said. The jail was put on lockdown.

Employees were allowed back inside the buildings a few hours later. The time that the caller said the bomb would explode at the courthouse had long expired, said city of Belton spokesman Paul Romer.

Bell County has a contract with nearby Fort Hood to house all of its defendants, including Hasan, because the Army post does not have holding facilities. Lange said this was the first threat related to Hasan, and it came a day after a military judge who reviewed the security plans for Hasan’s murder trial said she was unaware of any threat to any individual or group.

Hasan has made no demands of the jail staff, Lange said.

Hasan has not made any demands at court hearings. But he objected Tuesday to the judge’s denial of his ‘defense of others’ strategy, which must show that killing was necessary to prevent the immediate harm or death of others. Hasan, an American-born Muslim, has said he shot U.S. troops because they were an imminent threat to Taliban leaders in Afghanistan.” Read more.

Now that a few Muslim cab drivers have been given an inch, others will follow suit by looking for that extra mile. As we’ve seen elsewhere, we can soon expect to hear about other devout believers demanding the right to refuse service to passengers with dogs, or carrying alcohol in their luggage (or wearing yarmulkes, or “immodest” women).  And all for “peaceful purposes” which, in the words of one airport spokesman, translates into a “good relationship with ground transportation providers” …

SFGate – “Here’s a sign of the changing times — Muslim cabbies now have their very own place at San Francisco International Airport to wash their hands and feet before they pray.

Under Islamic law, Muslims are required to pray five times a day — a ritual that also calls for a ceremonial cleansing.

For many cab drivers, that’s meant either lugging bottled water around or using one of the bathrooms inside the terminal to wash — a practice not always welcomed by airport passengers.

So Royal Cab driver Hasan Khan, 52, a Pakistani immigrant, collected some 300 signatures from fellow cabbies, urging the airport to give them their own cleansing station.

Airport brass obliged — and the wash equipment was installed on the ground floor of the main garage, right next to where the drivers congregate for their breaks.

‘The way we look at it…this was in the interest of maintaining a good relationship with ground transportation providers,’ says airport spokesman Doug Yakel.

As for using public resources?

Yakel says the costs were nominal, with the work done by in-house plumbers.” Read more.

‘No power but Allah can stop Turkey’s rise,’ he told thousands who gathered in the early hours to greet him in the first pro-Erdogan rally since demonstrations began a week ago.

At Istanbul’s Taksim Square, the center of the protests and now occupied by thousands around the clock, some chanted ‘Tayyip resign’ as they watched a broadcast of the address. In the capital, Ankara, the Kugulu Park echoed with anti-government slogans, while protesters danced or sang the national anthem.

Speaking from an open-top bus at the airport, his wife at his side, Erdogan acknowledged police might have used excessive force in crushing a small demonstration against a building project last Friday — the action that triggered nationwide protests against his 10-year rule.

‘However, no one has the right to attack us through this. May Allah preserve our fraternity and unity. We will have nothing to do with fighting and vandalism. … The secret to our success is not tension and polarization,’ Erdogan told the crowd.

‘The police are doing their duty. These protests, which have turned into vandalism and utter lawlessness, must end immediately,’ he added.

He gave no indication of any immediate plans to remove the makeshift protest camps that have appeared on Taksim Square and a park in Ankara. But the gatherings mark a clear challenge to his declarations.

Western governments including the United States, which sees Turkey as a key NATO ally in the Middle East, bordering Iran, Iraq and Syria, have expressed concern about heavy-handed police action.” Read more.
