As the rapidly growing Muslim population makes its presence felt in towns and cities across the continent, Islam is transforming the European way of life in ways unimaginable only a few years ago.

Some of the more notable Islam-related controversies during 2012 occurred in Germany, where the Muslim population has jumped from around 50,000 in the early 1980s to more than 4.5 million today.

What follows is a brief chronological review of some of the main stories involving the rise of Islam in Germany during 2012.

In January, German authorities welcomed the start of the New Year by officially confirming that they are monitoring German-language Internet websites that are critical of Muslim immigration and the Islamization of Europe.

In a January 4, 2012 interview with the Berliner Zeitung and the Frankfurter Rundschau, Manfred Murck, the director of the Hamburg branch of the German domestic intelligence agency (the Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz (BfV)), said his organization was studying whether German citizens who criticize Muslims and Islam on the Internet are fomenting hate and are thus criminally guilty of ‘breaching’ the German constitution.

The BfV’s move marked a significant setback for the exercise of free speech in Germany and came amid a months-long smear campaign led by a triple alliance of left-wing German multicultural elites, sundry Muslim groups and members of the mainstream media, who have been relentless in their efforts to discredit the so-called counter-jihad movement (also known as the ‘Islamophobes’) in Germany.

In a country stifled by decades of political correctness, the counter-jihad activists and bloggers have been giving a voice to millions of frustrated Germans who see the harm being wrought by the cult of multiculturalism.

Opinion polls consistently show that growing numbers of ordinary German citizens are worried about the consequences of decades of multicultural policies that have encouraged mass immigration from Muslim countries. Germans are especially concerned about the refusal of millions of Muslim immigrants to integrate into German society, as well as the emergence of a parallel legal system in Germany based on Islamic Sharia law.

Also in January, Muslims in Duisburg, one of the most Islamized cities in Germany, clamored for the right to turn empty churches into mosques. All of the churches are located in the gritty Hamborn and Marxloh districts in northern Duisburg where Islam has already replaced Christianity as the dominant religion, and where several Catholic churches have been abandoned.

Here’s an update on this story. It seems that Spain’s Muslim population alone has done enough to strike fear into the hearts of the unbelieving Spanish government. If Spain deports Imran Firasat back to Pakistan (or any Muslim country for that matter) it will likely be an automatic death sentence …

El Diario (Translation) – “The Spanish authorities have revoked asylum status to a Pakistani who recorded a video defamatory about Muhammad for ‘acting against Spanish state security,’ EFE reported according to Interior Ministry sources.

The decision, taken late on Friday, was made against Pakistani Imran Firasat, based in Spain, because he is considered ‘a threat to state security.’

The author of the controversial video, who can submit arguments against this decision, will have to leave Spain where he has legally resided since October 24, 2006 when he was granted political asylum status ‘for humanitarian reasons’ when the revocation is final.

The judge investigating the controversial video warned the Pakistani Imran Firasat that if he disseminated the video by any means he would order his immediate arrest, according to EFE sources close to the case. The judge had accused the Pakistani for the crime of incitement to religious hatred and violence.

He is accused of threatening state security with this tape recording in which, among other things, questions whether Muhammad was a ‘child molester.’

Firasat now has a deadline for submissions against the Interior’s decision to revoke his refugee status and the final judgement. If the judge considers the revocation of his refugee status the citizen of Pakistani origin would have to leave Spain.” Read more.

Flashback: Spanish Town Becoming ‘New Mecca of the Most Radical Islamism’ – “The municipality of Salt, a town near Barcelona where Muslim immigrants now make up 40% of the population, has approved a one-year ban on the construction of new mosques. It is the first ban of its kind in Spain. The moratorium follows public outrage over plans to build a massive Salafi mosque that is being financed by Saudi Arabia. Salafism is a branch of revivalist Islam that calls for restoring past Muslim glory by forcibly re-establishing an Islamic empire (Caliphate) across the Middle East, North Africa and parts of Europe such as Spain, which Salafists view as a Muslim state that must be reconquered for Islam.” Read more.

Yet this particular member is only capable of denigrating those evil Jews even while, according to him, destroying Western civilization from within is apparently part of their own “thieving” Jewish nature. If he actually believed his own blather, you’d think he’d be praising the Jews for doing what the Muslim Brotherhood has so far failed to do …

Al Arabiya – “A group of Egypt’s Christian women voters were banned on Saturday in Cairo’s Nasr City from casting their ballot in a disputed constitutional referendum, an Al Arabiya correspondent and AFP reported.

Nasr City was the scene of mass rallies last night as Islamists who support President Mohammed Mursi took to the streets.

Details of banning Coptic Christians from voting are not immediately available, but earlier the opposition National Salvation Front was quoted by AFP as saying that a judge in Nasr City forbade Christians from casting their vote.

On November 30, the draft constitution was passed by an assembly composed mostly of Islamists, in a marathon session, despite a walkout by secular activists and Christians from the 100-member panel.

If the constitution is approved by a simple majority of voters, the Islamists who gripped powered after Mubarak’s ouster would gain even more clout in the country. The current upper house of parliament, which is dominated by the Islamists, will be given legislative authority until a new parliament is elected.

If the constitution is refuted, elections would be held within three months giving a new panel the right to draft a new constitution. In the meantime, legislative powers would remain with the Egyptian President.” Read more.

Since the last census in 2001, the number of Britons identifying themselves, however loosely, as Christians is down 13 percentage points to 59 per cent.

The number of respondents who say they have no religious faith is up 10 points to 25 per cent. Meanwhile, staggeringly, the Muslim population has grown from 1.55 million to 2.7 million, an increase of 1.15 million from 2001 to 2011.

The surge in Islamic belief is entirely a consequence of immigration. The spread of agnosticism and atheism is (though I haven’t yet seen the breakdown by age) largely generational.

It cannot be said too often: the default position of people born since 1980 is agnosticism or atheism. Meanwhile, as a commenter points out below, net migration from the UK consists largely of people who would probably have ticked the Christian or C of E box. That hadn’t occurred to me, but it’s an important factor.

A quick thought: these figures confirm that, saddled with shrinking congregations and (so far) dreadful leadership from Archbishops Williams and Nichols, the Churches haven’t a hope in hell of stopping gay marriage.” Source – The Telegraph.

By Dudi Cohen, ynet – “Swedish Ambassador to Iran Peter Tejler nearly caused a diplomatic incident between Stockholm and Tehran last week, when he presented his letter of accreditation to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. His offense: Exposing the sole of his shoe.

The event, which is a routine diplomatic procedure, was proceeding according to plan until, as the two were seated, the ambassador decided to cross his legs. The act seemed to have insulted the Iranian president, causing him to flash the ambassador a retaliatory leg-crossing himself.

The incident did not go unnoticed by local media. ‘The ambassador’s actions are undiplomatic and impolite,’ an Iranian website reported, adding that ‘Such behavior deviates from diplomatic and international norms.’

The incident occurred last Monday at the Iranian president’s Teheran office, when the Swedish ambassador placed his right leg over his left, revealing the sole of his right shoe.

In Islam, shoes, and especially their soles, are considered impure and even profane. Exposing one’s shoes or their soles before a high-ranking official is considered a great insult.” Read more.

Now even that ‘milestone’ has been reached, thanks to the watchdogs of Turkey’s television stations under the Islamic-leaning government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to the newspaper Hurriyet, Ankara’s Council of Radio and Television (RTUK) has handed down a TRY 52,951 fine (about 23,000 euros) to the private broadcaster CNBC-E for having broadcast an episode of the cartoon in which ‘God is mocked’. In the episode, God goes so far as to offer coffee to the devil. In the eyes of RTUK, this ‘can be considered an insult’ of a blasphemous nature, and the cartoon was held to encourage young people ‘to drink alcohol during New Year’s celebrations in New York City’. What’s more, ‘one of the characters insults the religious beliefs of another to induce him to commit murder’, ‘the Bible is burnt in public’ and ‘God and the devil are represented in human form’. ‘In a country in which the head of the government thinks that a TV series must be historical documentation, it is entirely normal that the RTUK fails to understand the jokes in a cartoon,’ said Hurriyet op-ed writer Mehmet Yilmaz. Last week Erdogan lashed out at the popular Turkish television series Suleiman the Magnificent, which boasts 150 million viewers in the Middle East and the Balkans, threatening to order that the judges stand trial over its focus on sex and love in the harem of the important sultan, instead of concentrating on his territorial conquests. In the eyes of the secular opposition, the prime minister – who has been in the position for 10 years – has a ‘hidden agenda’ to re-Islamicise the country, and wants to dilute the legacy left by the founder of modern Turkey and ‘father of the country’ Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

Erdogan has lifted the ban established by Ataturk on the Islamic headscarf in universities, builds mosques everywhere (one slated to be built in Istanbul will be ‘enormous’ and will have to be ‘able to be seen from every corner of the vast city on the banks of the Bosporus), and is considering bringing back the death penalty, since according to Islamic tradition only families and not the society can pardon a murderer. Yilmaz wrote today that ‘I am curious to see what the screenwriters will do when that find out that in a country called ‘Turkey’ their irony is punished with a fine. Perhaps they’ll put a RTUK inspector next to the evangelist Flanders? Or perhaps between Homer’s house and that of Flanders they’ll put the house of a God-fearing Muslim, ‘Almond Mustache?’. In Turkey religious Muslims shaved their mustaches around the lips in the manner of Erdogan, in contrast with traditionally ‘Turkish’ mustaches.
