Even Turkey — which is often hailed as “a useful model for new Arab regimes” — contains similar articles within its own constitution, yet was recently added to the list of worst religious freedom offenders in the world by the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom …

By Elad Benari, INN – “Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood-led government is suggesting that the country’s new constitution be based on the principles of Islam.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s website published on Monday the draft of the new constitution, which was put together by a special committee numbering 100 members, the majority of which are members of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafist parties.

According to the draft, translated by Arab affairs expert Dalit Halevi, the main clauses in the new constitution are:

‘[Sunni] Islam is the religion of the state, Arabic is the official language and the principles of Islamic law are the main source for legislation.’

‘The principles of the religion of the Christians and the Jews are the main source of legislation for the personal and religious affairs and for the purpose of choosing their spiritual leaders.’

‘The Al-Azhar (considered the highest authority in Sunni Islam) is an independent Islamic institution … whose purpose is to spread the message of Islam and religion. All residents are equal before the law … there shall not be discrimination because of sex, origin, language, religion, belief, opinion, social status or disability. The state ensures the freedom of religious worship of monotheistic religions in accordance with the law.’

The draft also notes that ‘freedom of opinion is guaranteed, and should not hurt the Prophet of Prophets.’

On Friday, more than 10,000 ultraconservative Muslims demonstrated in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, demanding that Egypt’s new constitution be based on the rulings of Islamic Sharia law.” Read more.

Egypt: Women’s Equality Article Removed From Constitution – “Members of the Constituent Assembly agreed last week to remove a proposed article which provided some constitutional support for gender equality — provided that such equality did not violate the provisions of Islamic Sharia law. The episode showed the ability of both liberals and ultra-conservative Salafis to stamp their mark on a constitution-writing process dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood. Secularists had objected to women’s rights being made conditional on Sharia. This, they argued, would endanger the whole concept of equality, and could be used as a backdoor to strip women of civil and political rights they have already gained…” Read more.

Flashback: Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood Presidential Candidate: There is No Freedom in Islam – “Hazem Saleh Abu Ismail, Egypt’s presidential candidate and a vocal supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, has said that there is no room for personal freedom in Islam. In a recent television interview translated and reported by Jihad Watch, Ismail said that being a Muslim is like being a member of the military, where one has to go by a dictatorial code of conduct. ‘If you claim that Allah considers it your personal freedom, show me your reference? Nobody has ever said that – except for people have no understanding of Sharia,’ Ismail said.” Read more.

I have no idea if this act of vandalism was committed by a Muslim or not, but it certainly does demonstrate the degree to which Islam has encroached upon the sensibilities of Western society …

CTV News – “Police have asked a hate crime investigator to look into vandalism discovered on a war memorial at a park near Toronto’s waterfront.

The words ‘Canada will burn praise Allah’ were discovered on the Victory Peace war memorial in Coronation Park on Sunday, hours after a Remembrance Day service had taken place.

City workers managed to scrub away the black lettering on Monday morning, but investigators are still trying to figure out who scrawled the message on the sculpture.

If the vandalism is declared a hate crime, the formal charge will remain mischief but the penalty accompanying a conviction will be much more severe.

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford condemned the vandalism while speaking to media Monday.

‘For someone to stoop to that level, to go after people that sacrificed their lives for us to be here, is absolutely sickening,’ Ford told reporters.

That sentiment was echoed by Gord Pearce, a member of a Royal Canadian Legion branch in east Toronto.

‘I think it’s just hoodlums that are doing it,’ he said. ‘I don’t think they have respect for the country or Canada or what our soldiers have done for them.’

The Victory Peace monument was created to mark the end of the Second World War. It features 50 words in 50 different languages, all of them meaning ‘peace.'” Read more.

Revolting. How any parent could do this to their own child is beyond comprehension. Did she not recite a passage of the Qur’an properly? Did she say that a boy was cute? Did she fail to pray regularly? …

Emirates 24/7 – “A well-known Saud scholar is facing charges of torturing his five-year-old daughter to death with the help of his new wife by using sticks and hot metals.

The Saudi Arabic language daily Alyoum did not identify the scholar but said he often appears on a local satellite TV channel.

The paper said his daughter Lama died in hospital a few days ago after spending several weeks suffering from broken arms, skull fracture and head bruises.

It quoted the girl’s mother as saying her daughter had been systematically tortured by her father and his new wife before she was admitted to hospital in a serious case.

‘I appeal for the authorities and human rights groups to support my quest to have my ex-husband and his wife executed for murdering her daughter,’ the mother told the paper at her house in the capital Riyadh.” Source – Emirates 24/7.

Flashback: Muslim Students Didn’t Pray Regularly During Vacation, Teacher Burns Children’s Legs With Hot Iron Rods – “Police in Bangladesh are looking for a teacher from a Muslim religious school who allegedly placed burning hot iron rods on the legs of her students for failing to offer prayers regularly. They say 14 girls, aged between eight and 12, received burn injuries… ‘Our teacher got angry when she heard that we were not offering regular prayers during our vacation … Then she asked her servant to heat up the rod and then she pressed it on our legs. By Nicola Hebden – “A factory in the centre of France has been given the green light from Brussels to start producing Europe’s first halal toothpaste, due to be available in shops later this month.

From November 23, the halal toothpaste will be available in specialised shops for €1.45 per tube – until now all halal beauty products in France had been imported from Belgium, Indonesia and Australia.

To obtain the official European halal label, the production and storage areas of the product are inspected by an imam to ensure they are free of any pork produce.

But because of press attention in France, the factory making the toothpaste wanted to remain anonymous, ‘because our other big-name cosmetic clients do not wish to have their brand associated with halal,’ the director told le Parisien.

Halal brand director, Nabil Hadj-Chikh, admits pork-free beauty products are not a big issue for all Muslims in France.

‘Some find this kind of thing is going too far, for others it is a sin to consume pork in any product, especially after we find out pork is in that product,’ he said.

Pork fat, usually in the form of glycerine, is used as the base of a few cosmetics on the market – its use increased after the mad cow crisis, when lipstick and nail varnish manufacturers stopped using beef fat.

According to world market leader Colgate, much of the glycerine used in its products comes from vegetarian sources or beef fat, but pork-based glycerine is sometimes used.

In France, it is estimated about 1 million Muslims buy halal cosmetics. For the factory producing the toothpaste, its biggest source of business will be exporting to Muslim countries.” Source – The Local.

WND – “Kayhan, a publication that serves as a mouthpiece for the Iranian regime, says Barack Obama is weak, unable to solve challenges and has the same ‘serial crimes’ as the predecessor from whom he inherited the White House: George W. Bush.

‘Obama is too weak to solve the important challenges: The Palestinian question and the security of the occupying regime, the Islamic awakening, and the Iranian challenge,’ the publication said, according to a report today from the Middle East Media Research Institute.

The organization that monitors Middle East media, interprets and reports on the statements has compiled a list of comments from editorials and leaders about Obama’s narrow popular vote margin in the 2012 presidential election.

‘Kayhan expressed its disdain for Obama’s re-election with its November 8 front-page headline: ‘Mr. Change Is Here Again, Four More Years Without Change,’’ MEMRI reported. ‘In its editorial that day, the paper stated that as far as the American voters were concerned, the election was between ‘bad and worse.’’

‘Obama is the same weak Bush. The America of 2012 is the same America of 2001, that has lost its value,’ MEMRI said the newspaper wrote. ‘The sum total of the [U.S.’s] crimes during Obama’s term is no less than that during the Bush term. The traces of the U.S. and its serial crimes can be spotted in all the crises in the region – Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Bahrain, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. It suffered great defeats in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Lebanon, and Palestine…

‘Obama and his administration have nothing new to say – not only to Iran but also to most of the countries of the world, and to Europe as well,’ the newspaper wrote.

Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was in Bali, Indonesia, for a conference and said elections in the West ‘have turned into the scene for the propaganda campaign of the capitalists and huge expenses and many independent, decent and efficient figures do not get the chance to participate in ruling [their countries].’
