By Michael Bachelard and Ben Doherty, Birsbane Times – “JAKARTA: A mob of Indonesian Islamists waving jihad flags attacked the US embassy yesterday, throwing rocks and bricks, but they were repelled by tear gas and riot police.

About 500 people from a number of radical groups were protesting against the movie The Innocence of Muslims by calling for the arrest and death penalty for the movie’s director Sam Bacile and the Florida preacher Terry Jones who had planned to show the film.

Shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ and ‘F— America,’ the mob, many of whom were masked, marched on the embassy and began to attack.

Riot police were initially caught unprepared and without their shields.

Volleys of rocks and bricks, broken from the pavement, rained on the police and embassy guards. Local television stations were also reporting that petrol bombs were thrown.

One guard was separated from the building and pursued by a mob. It appeared he was eventually caught by a large group of protesters and surrounded, though it is not known what happened to him.

A police officer was carried from the scene by his comrades, with reports variously suggesting he had been hit by a rock or stabbed in the face.

The protesters also targeted western journalists. At one stage a mob surrounded reporters, threatening violence and accusing them of being Americans.” Read more.

Khabar Online – “A senior Iranian cleric has warned the ongoing spiraling protests against a US-made anti-Islam movie have triggered the second wave of the Islamic awakening that would obliterate the United States.

‘This insult touched off the second wave of Islamic awakening and we hope that this wave would grow into a tsunami which would annihilate the US,’ Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, the top member of the Assembly of Experts, told thousands of clerics in the holy city of Qom on Sunday.

‘The Americans are frustrated. But if they are honest in their claims that they do not support this [anti-Islam] campaign they should punish the film director who has surrendered to police in order to stave off any repetition,’ he said.

Khatami said the blasphemous film is a ‘Zionist-American’ movie, adding, ‘This crime is led by the US and the Zionists.’

‘Today, the wave of global hatred is spiraling against you [the US] and if until yesterday, Iran was [the only country] against you [the US], today the entire Muslim world shouts the slogan of Down with the US,’ he noted.

Khatami dismissed the US justification of freedom of expression for its inaction against the blasphemous film. ‘They say people enjoy freedom of expression there. This justification is a lie. In your countries, nobody can speak differently from you about Holocaust. [Can you still claim that] you support freedom of expression?'” Read more.

By ADIL JAWAD and BASSEM MROUE – “KARACHI, Pakistan — Hundreds of Pakistanis protesting an anti-Islam film broke through a barricade near the U.S. Consulate in the southern city of Karachi on Sunday, sparking clashes with police in which one demonstrator was killed and more than a dozen injured.

In a move that could escalate tensions around the Arab world, the leader of the Hezbollah militant group called for protests against the movie, saying protesters should not only ‘express our anger’ at U.S. embassies but urge leaders to act.

… [P]olice fired tear gas and water cannons at the protesters in Karachi after they broke through the barricade and reached the outer wall of the U.S. Consulate, police officer Mohammad Ranjha said. The protesters threw stones and bricks, prompting the police to beat back the crowd with their batons. The police and private security guards outside the consulate also fired in the air to disperse the crowd.

One protester was killed during the clash, said Ali Ahmar, spokesman for the Shiite Muslim group that organized the rally.

An official with the main ambulance service in the city, Khurram Ahmad, confirmed they carried away one dead protester and 18 others who were injured.

All Americans who work at the consulate, which is located in the heart of Karachi, were safe, Rian Harris, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, said.

Thousands more held peaceful demonstrations against the film in other parts of the country, including the eastern city of Lahore and the northwest city of Dera Ismail Khan.

The demonstration in Lahore was organized by Jamaat-ud-Dawa, believed to be a front organization for a powerful militant group blamed for attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008 that killed over 160 people. The protesters shouted anti-U.S. slogans and burned an American flag.

‘Our war will continue until America is destroyed!’ shouted some of the protesters. ‘Dog, dog, America is a dog!’ chanted others.” Read more.

By Barak Ravid – “For months before the most recent attacks on U.S. embassies in North African states, Foreign Ministry and U.S. State Department officials had been arguing over developments in these countries. Senior figures in Jerusalem claimed that Washington was burying its head in the sand and ignoring the increasing radicalization in states such as Tunisia and Egypt.

The Obama administration, which since the beginning of the Arab Spring has aided, directly or indirectly, the forces that brought down the dictatorial regimes in Egypt, Tunisia, Yemen and Lybia, now finds itself in a position of helplessness. The attack on the consulate in Benghazi, in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, was killed, and the storming of the U.S. embassies in Tunis, Sanaa and Cairo, proved the great hostility to the United States and the unwillingness of these country’s new leaders to challenge domestic public opinion.

Senior Foreign Ministry officials say their conversations with their Washington counterparts have focused on what Jerusalem terms ‘radicalizing trends’ against not only Israel but also against the United States and the West in general.

One of the most recent such meetings took place a week ago, during a visit to Jerusalem by the acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs, A. Elizabeth Jones.

‘The Americans were constantly trying to supply explanations and excuses for events in the post-revolution Arab states, and simply ignored the problems,’ one senior Israeli official said, adding, ‘In practice the administration’s ability to affect events in the Arab world has decreased immensely.’

The Foreign Ministry official presented the example of Tunisia, which was expected to be moderate despite the rise to power of the Muslim Brotherhood.” Read more.

“TRIPOLI, Lebanon (Reuters) – One demonstrator was killed and two others were wounded in clashes with security forces in the northern Lebanese city of Tripoli on Friday in protests over a film insulting the Muslim Prophet Mohammad and against the pope’s visit to Lebanon.

A security source said the man was killed as protesters tried to storm a government building. Earlier, a U.S. fast food restaurant was set alight. Twelve members of the security forces were wounded by stones thrown by protesters, the source said.

The U.S.-made film has sparked violent protests in Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed, and in Egypt, Yemen and Sudan and there are fears the demonstrations could spread to other Muslim countries.” Read more.

In Tunisia, protesters have scaled a U.S. Embassy gate and set fire to cars on the property, a journalist there says. In Egypt, the influential Muslim Brotherhood canceled nationwide protests planned for Friday, but a running battle between police and protesters in Cairo continued into its fourth day…

Nigerian military and police fired shots to disperse a crowd of protesters in the city of Jos, an eyewitness said.

About 2,000 people protesting the anti-Islamic film gathered at a central mosque, and security forces intervened when the crowd started moving toward the city center…

– In Afghanistan, hundreds of demonstrators in the eastern Nangarhar province burned a U.S. flag and chanted ‘Death to America’ and ‘We condemn the film.’ The demonstration lasted about an hour and ended peacefully, a local official said. The Afghan government has ordered an indefinite block of YouTube to prevent people there from watching the clips and staging violent protests.

– In Baghdad, Iraq, hundreds of followers of the radical Shiite Muslim cleric Muqtada al-Sadr chanted ‘No to America, no to Israel.’

– In Jerusalem, Palestinians marched from the al-Aqsa mosque toward the U.S. Consulate, but were prevented from reaching the mission by Israeli riot forces.

– In Syria, hundreds gathered outside the U.S. Embassy in Damascus. Protesters waved placards that condemned the film and blamed the U.S. administration for allowing the production and broadcast of it, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency.

– In Iran, the Islamic Propagation Coordination Council called for nationwide rallies Friday to protest the film and what it is calling a U.S.-backed plot against Muslims, according to the state-run IRNA news agency.” Read more.

By JIM VERTUNO, Associated Press – ” AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Thousands of people streamed off university campuses in Texas and North Dakota on Friday after phoned-in bomb threats prompted evacuations and officials warned students and faculty to get away as quickly as possible. No bombs had been found on either campus by late morning and it was not clear whether the threats were related.

The University of Texas issued received a call about 8:35 a.m. from a man claiming to be with al-Qaida who said he had placed bombs all over the 50,000-student Austin campus, according to University of Texas spokeswoman Rhonda Weldon. He claimed the bombs would go off in 90 minutes and all buildings were evacuated at 9:50 a.m. as a precaution, Weldon said.

The deadline passed without incident, and the university issued another advisory saying all buildings had been cleared. It left open the possibility that classes could resume later Friday.

North Dakota State University President Dean Bresciani said 20,000 people also were evacuated from his school’s main and downtown campuses in Fargo after the school received its bomb threat Friday morning. Officials did not immediately release details about the North Dakota threat.

In Texas, sirens wailed on campus and cellphones pinged with text messages as the alert when out. Students described more confusion than panic as they began to exit the sprawling campus in what one described as an ‘orderly but tense’ manner. Students said they were directed off campus by university staff.

‘One of them said to me `get off this campus as soon as possible,” said Elizabeth Gerberich, an 18-year-old freshman from New Jersey.” Read more.

Nuclear Reactor Facility Evacuated In Austin After ‘Al-Qaeda’ Bomb Threat – “A research facility at the University of Texas in Austin that houses an active nuclear reactor has been evacuated after a man with a middle eastern accent claiming to be a member of Al-Qaeda warned authorities the campus had been booby-trapped with explosives… A campus-wide email has been sent to all students, according to the Dallas News. ‘Evacuation due to threats on campus immediately evacuate all buildings get as far away from the buildings as possible. Further information to come,’ the email reads.” Read more.

By Gil Ronen, INN – “While Egyptian protesters fought security forces outside the U.S. Embassy in Cairo Thursday morning, another standoff was taking place in cyberspace between the Embassy and the Muslim Brotherhood, wrote Al Ahram Online Thursday.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s official English-language Twitter account reposted a message from the group’s deputy head, Khairat El-Shater, saying he was ‘relieved none of @USembassycairo staff was hurt’ and expressing hope that U.S.-Egyptian relations would survive intact.

‘This reconciliatory tweet, however, was posted while the Brotherhood’s Arabic-language Twitter account and its official website were both praising the protests… and calling for a million man march on Friday,’ wrote the news source.

‘One Arabic language article on the Brotherhood’s site sported the headline ‘Egyptians rise to defend the Prophet’.’

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo picked up the contradiction and tweeted: ‘Thanks. By the way, have you checked out your own Arabic feeds? I hope you know we read those too.’

The Brotherhood replied some 20 minutes later, saying ‘we understand you’re under a lot of stress, but it will be more helpful if you point out exactly the Arabic feed of concern.’

‘They were just three tweets, but they provided a snapshot into the strains US-Egypt relations are under this week,’ said Al Ahram.

Egypt’s president, Mohammed Morsi, is the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood’s political party.” Source – INN.
