By Elizabeth Mohr, Pioneer Press – “Citing religious views, an accused bank robber known as ‘The Man in Black’ asked a federal judge this week to postpone hearings until the end of Ramadan, a monthlong Muslim observance.

Mark Edward Wetsch was charged with holding up 13 Minnesota banks between March 2011 and January 2012. The robber earned his moniker by wearing all black during the heists, in which he made off with about $69,000.

Wetsch was scheduled to have a motion hearing Friday, July 20, in U.S. District Court in St. Paul but asked the judge to continue the hearing so he could observe the holy month of Ramadan, a period of daylight fasting, prayer and reflection. Ramadan began Friday and lasts 30 days.

After Magistrate Judge Jeanne Graham denied his initial request for a continuance, Wetsch argued that his meal and prayer requirements can be accommodated, but there are other elements of Ramadan to be observed as well.

‘Mr. Wetsch describes two tenets that must also be adhered to during Ramadan: The faith calls for not engaging in conflict and argument; and to work to reconcile differences and seek peace,’ said Wetsch’s motion, filed Thursday. ‘Clearly, a contested hearing in which the government is making allegations against Mr. Wetsch and he is fighting against causes him to engage in conflict and argument.’

Graham approved his renewed request. His next hearing has not yet been scheduled.” Source – Pioneer Press.

Associated Press – “RIYADH, Saudi Arabia – Saudi authorities are warning non-Muslim expatriates against eating, drinking or smoking in public during Ramadan, the monthlong sunrise-to-sunset fast — or face expulsion.

The Interior Ministry of the oil-rich kingdom is calling on non-Muslims to ‘show consideration for feelings of Muslims’ and ‘preserve the sacred Islamic rituals.’

Otherwise, a statement says, Saudi authorities will cancel violators’ work contracts and expel them.

The warning came on Friday, the first day of the Ramadan observance.

In addition to Saudi Arabia’s 19 million citizens, there are nearly 8 million Asian workers in the country, as well as hundreds of thousands of other foreign expatriates from around the globe, according to government figures.

Saudi Arabia, the ultraconservative Sunni kingdom, is the home of Islam’s holiest sites. It enforces a strict interpretation of the religion.” Source – Fox News.

Saudi Arabia Considers Law Against Insulting Islam – “Saudi Arabia is studying new regulations to criminalise insulting Islam, including in social media, and the law could carry heavy penalties, a Saudi paper said on Sunday. The potential regulations come five months after a Saudi blogger and columnist Hamza Kashgari, 23, was arrested for tweeting comments deemed as insulting the Prophet Mohammad. Kashgari said there were things he liked and disliked about him. ‘Within the next two months the Shura Council will reveal the outcome of study on the regulations to combat the criticism of the basic tenets of Islamic sharia,’ unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter told al-Watan, adding that there could be ‘severe punishments’ for violators.” Read more.

“A 17-year-old shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ … as he unsuccessfully tried to grab the Olympic torch during a stretch of the flame’s route through Maidstone towards Redhill.

Broadcast live on the BBC, the youth lunged from the crowd to try to take the torch from the hands of its bearer Anna Skora, but was swiftly bundled away by officers.

In one video posted to YouTube he can be seen waiting behind a car and as Ms Skora gets closer he lunges towards the torch.

Ms Skora was about to hand over the torch to Graham White, a Surrey charity worker, when the teenager burst out of the crowd and tried to grab it.

He managed to get through the line of police officers escorting the torch as it headed through the town.

One of the officers at the back of the group swiftly grabbed hold of Ms Skora and the torch, guiding them to the opposite side of the road.

Four or five of the other torch guards then bundled the man to the side of the road where he was then arrested.

Ms Skora managed to keep the torch upright throughout the ordeal and she continued to smile as she completed her stretch of the Olympic flame relay.” Read more.

By LEE FERRAN and JASON RYAN, ABC News – “More than a decade after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 Americans, some foreign flight students are still not subject to terror database screening until after they’ve completed pilot training, according to a new report from the government’s watchdog.

‘Thus, foreign nationals obtaining flight training with the intent to do harm, such as three of the pilots and leaders of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, could have already obtained the training needed to operate an aircraft before they received any type of vetting,’ says report, published today by the Government Accountability Office.

In the Sept. 11 attacks, 19 foreign nationals hijacked four commercial airliners and used the planes as weapons to hit the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in the nation’s capital. Several of the hijackers attended more than a dozen American flight schools in the weeks before the attacks to learn how to fly the jets.

After the attacks, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) established the Alien Flight Student Program (AFSP), which is designed to prevent flight schools regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration from “providing flight training to a foreign student unless the Secretary of Homeland Security first determines that the student does not pose a threat to aviation or national security.”

But the new GAO report says that the AFSP database is woefully behind and some of the more than 25,000 foreign nationals who were in the FAA airmen registry were not found in the AFSP database, ‘indicating that these individuals had not applied to the AFSP or been vetted by the TSA before taking flight training and receiving an FAA airman certificate.’

‘It is disturbing to learn we could still be vulnerable to the same actions the 9/11 hijackers took over a decade ago,’ said Rep. Mike Rogers (R.-Alabama), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee Subcommittee on Transportation Security.” Read more.

Ankie Spitzer, whose husband Andre was one of the athletes massacred in the Munich Games [in] 1972, told the European Jewish Press that Jacques Rogge, president of the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games, told her that his ‘hands were tied’ by the admission of 46 Arab and Muslim members to the International Olympic Committee.

She replied, ‘My husband’s hands were tied, not yours.’

The widow has been conducting an uphill battle to convince the International Olympics Committee to remember the slain athletes with one minute of silence before the opening of the Games in London next week. It never has done so since the murders 40 years ago.

Spitzer gained support for her effort from several countries, including the United States, Britain, Australia, Belgium and Germany. A letter appealing for the minute of silence was signed by 140 Italian legislators, to no avail.

Spitzer called the Olympics ‘a corrupt organization, led by greed rather than the Olympic spirit. She added, ‘The IOC’s refusal is pure discrimination – greed and anti-Semitism.'” Source – INN.

But don’t worry, this enlightened Muslim cleric only wants all non-Muslim women to dress like Muslim women because he cares so much for their safety.  Indeed, nothing shows you care more for the inferior sex than blaming them for being sexually assaulted. Because they’re asking for it, right? Besides, if Muslim men are unable to control sexual temptation, then neither can all non-Muslim men, correct? After all, the prophet of Islam said it, so it has to be true. But here’s an idea: Instead of forcing all non-Muslim women to conform to a Muslim dress code, how about we just force all Muslim men to stay indoors? Wouldn’t women then be much, much safer? …

The Treatment Of Women Under Islam

By Terry Davidson, Toronto Sun – “Canadian laws should be changed to require women to ‘cover themselves’ to prevent sexual assaults, says an Islamic street preacher in Toronto.

Al-Haashim Kamena Atangana, a 33-year-old Islamic convert, called for legal change in response to recent sex attacks at York University.

Atangana is connected with a group called Muslim Support Network and is one of a number of street-corner clerics commonly seen at the Yonge and Dundas Sts.

In an e-mail to the Toronto Sun, Atangana said ‘the reason … these sex attacks are continuously happening is because (of) Canadian laws, which give too much freedom to women’ when it comes to how they dress.

‘You should take your example from the way Muslim women dress,’ he wrote. ‘Why does (sic) Muslim women who wear long dress and covers her head aren’t targeted for sex attacks?’

The clash between western culture and values and the beliefs of some Muslim adherents has been a source of controversy and conflict across North America.

Atangana, who plans to distribute his views on paper in the coming weeks, went on to state that ‘the reason … a woman gets raped is because of the way she (dresses),’ and suggests that ‘Toronto (become) the first city in North America to introduce laws that would make it illegal for women to dress provocatively.’

If Toronto did this, Atangana said in an interview, other Canadian cities would follow suit.

‘If (women) want to prevent being sexually assaulted, they should cover themselves,’ said Atangana, adding that while he doesn’t expect Western women to dress as Muslim women do, they should have a ‘dress code’ and take note of the burka the head scarf and face veil some Muslim females wear.” Read more.
