Tunisia: Islamist Ennahda Party Expected to Win Election, Voter: ‘Islam Should Be Respected Again in Tunisia’

10/23/2011 Leave a comment

The Islamist Ennahda Party may be described as ‘moderate’, but don’t let that term fool you.  As I wrote here back in September regarding Libya, Western ears often hear the word ‘moderate’ and think ‘peaceful’ or ‘free’ or ‘democratic’, so in the minds of the naive and the willingly ignorant there is therefore no need for worry.

We’ll often envision Indiana Jones chasing after lost relics throughout Egypt governed by a ‘moderate’ Islamic government.  Or we’ll think of a moderate country like Indonesia with its beautiful beach resorts.  Or a moderate society in Malaysia and the marvelous Petronas Twin Towers.  Or even a ‘moderate’ state such as Turkey and the St. Sophia ‘Church’ Museum.  Yet Egypt is where Christians have been persecuted and killed for centuries, before and during Mubarak, and now at an increasing pace post-revolution.  In Indonesia Islamic teachers are attacked for speaking against violence, and a television station is forced to pull a film promoting religious tolerance because some Muslims were offended and threatened to riot.  In Malaysia the government can now charge non-Muslims with ‘blasphemy’ for simply quoting from the Qur’an ‘insincerely’.  It’s also where at least one Muslim group has declared jihad against Christians simply for disagreeing with them.  And Turkey is responsible for — and continues to deny — the genocide of over one million Armenian Christians.  And the examples don’t end there.

The ‘Arab Spring’ isn’t giving birth to freedom.  It’s giving birth to a whole new Beast

“TUNIS, Oct 23 (Reuters) – Tunisian voters poured into polling stations to vote on Sunday in their country’s first free election, 10 months after vegetable seller Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in an act of protest that started the Arab Spring uprisings.

The leader of an Islamist party predicted to win the biggest share of the vote was heckled outside a polling station by people shouting ‘terrorist’, highlighting tensions between Islamists and secularists being felt across the Arab world.

Bouazizi’s dramatic suicide, prompted by despair over poverty and government repression, provoked mass protests which forced President Zine al-Abidine to flee Tunisia. This in turn inspired revolts in Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Syria.

Rachid Ghannouchi, leader of the moderately Islamist Ennahda party, took his place in the queue outside a polling station in the El Menzah 6 district of the capital.

‘This is an historic day,’ he said, accompanied by his wife and daughter, both wearing Islamic headscarves, or hijabs. ‘Tunisia was born today. The Arab Spring was born today.’…

‘Islam should be respected again in Tunisia,’ said Hasna Ben Zid, a 38-year-old woman wearing a hijab, ‘That’s why I’m going to vote for the only Islamic party.’

But the party’s rise worries secularists who believe their country’s liberal, modernist traditions are now under threat…

‘I’m not so optimistic about the result of the vote,’ said Ziyed Tijiani, a 26-year-old architect who had just cast his vote. His forefinger was stained with the blue ink used in polling stations to stop ballot fraud.

‘I think the Islamists could win. It’s not want I want. They may try to change the way I live,’ he said, accompanied by a young woman in jeans and T-shirt.” Read more.

Post-Revolt Tunisia Wrestles with Resurgent Islam, ‘We Want Islamic Schools All Over the Country’ – “For Walid, Tunisia’s revolution is an opportunity to turn one of the Arab world’s most secular countries towards Islam. ‘We paid a heavy price for the revolution so we are not ready to let secularists and supporters of the Zionists control our destiny,’ said the young man, with a beard and a long white robe, after prayers in the Omrane district of the capital. ‘We want to respect our religion and to apply Islamic law in our country.’ ‘We want Islamic schools all over the country.'” Read more.

Obama praises Tunisians on first post-revolt vote – “US President Barack Obama congratulated Tunisians Sunday on casting ballots in their country’s first election since the revolt that started the Arab Spring, calling it ‘an important step forward.’ ‘The United States reaffirms its commitment to the Tunisian people as they move toward a democratic future that offers dignity, justice, freedom of expression, and greater economic opportunity for all,’ Obama said in a statement.” Read more.

Belief in Witchcraft, Spells, the Occult and Protective Charms Widespread in the Middle East

10/22/2011 19 comments

Revelation 9:21, “Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.”

I had generally understood the Greek word for “magic arts” (pharmakeia) metaphorically, referring to idolatry instead of actual “sorcery” or “witchcraft” since the immediate context dealt explicitly with the worship of idols (cf Revelation 9:20).  But in light of this article, it could very possibly be referring to actual witchcraft as well …

566092-bigthumbnailBy ROB L. WAGNER – “Belief in witchcraft, spells, the occult and protective charms runs deep, despite religious and governmental bans against using magic.

When Tara Umm Omar was a young bride in her first marriage, she and her Moroccan husband took the youngest sister of a family friend into their home. On the day the young Moroccan woman arrived, she gave Umm Omar a doll, which Umm Omar promptly placed in a dresser drawer.

When Umm Omar told a friend of the doll, the friend suspected it was an item for black magic and suggested the doll be destroyed. Instead, Umm Omar tossed it in the garbage. That’s when household items disappeared, the family dog barked incessantly, Umm Omar started fighting with her husband and she began seeing strange insects in the house. When the guest finally moved out, the couple found their bed sheets and an identical doll to Umm Omar’s among the woman’s discarded belongings.

The message to Umm Omar was clear: The woman she invited into her home sought to destroy her happiness through black magic.

Umm Omar is since remarried to a Saudi and now lives in Riyadh. She runs the popular blog, Future Husbands and Wives of Saudis, a help website for non-Saudis marrying Saudis. As a quasi-marriage counselor for brides and grooms nervously entering Saudi society, Umm Omar dispenses religious and practical advice to help ease the cultural shock. That includes providing insight to the real world concerns of black magic and the evil eye.

‘The truth is that all magic is haram [prohibited] and only leads to bad ends,’ Umm Omar told The Media Line.

Belief in black magic runs deep in Saudi society. The issue was raised last month when the quasi-legislative body Shoura Council granted permission for Moroccan women to work as maids in Saudi households. Hundreds of Saudi women complained to the Council that granting Moroccan maids permission to work was tantamount to allowing the use of black magic in their homes to steal their husbands. Saudi wives complained the issue was not lacking trust in their husbands, but their men were powerless to ward off spells.

While greeted with skepticism in western societies, Saudis would no more question the existence of black magic than they would Islam. Two surahs (chapters) in the Qur’an under Al Mi’wadhatyan address black magic and are often recited during or after prayer. Simply, part of being a Muslim is believing in the existence of magic.” Read more.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai: If America and Pakistan Go To War, Afghanistan Will Back Pakistan

10/22/2011 1 comment

Forget the fact that America was pivotal in deposing the blood-thirsty Taliban from power and, at the expense of American lives, gave Hamid Karzai the chance to be elected in a ‘democratic’ Afghanistan and offered the Afghan people a taste of freedom.  Regardless of what Barack Obama believes, America and the West are viewed as ‘Christian’ in the Muslim world and it is forbidden in Islam to befriend non-Muslims …

Qur’an Sura 5:80, “You will see many of them befriending those who disbelieve; certainly evil is that which their souls have sent before for them, that Allah became displeased with them and in chastisement shall they abide [in Hell].”

Qur’an Sura 3:10, “(As for) those who disbelieve, surely neither their wealth nor their children shall avail them in the least against Allah, and these it is who are the fuel of the fire [of Hell].”

Qur’an Sura 5:51, “O you who believe! do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, then surely he is one of them; surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.”

“ISLAMABAD — Afghanistan would support Pakistan in case of military conflict between Pakistan and the United States, Afghan President Hamid Karzai said in an interview to a private Pakistani TV channel broadcast on Saturday.

The remarks were in sharp contrast to recent tension between the two neighbors over cross-border raids, and Afghan accusations that Pakistan was involved in killing the chief Afghan peace envoy, former Afghan president Burhanuddin Rabbani, by a suicide bomber on September 20.

‘God forbid, If ever there is a war between Pakistan and America, Afghanistan will side with Pakistan,’ he said in the interview to Geo television.

‘If Pakistan is attacked and if the people of Pakistan needs Afghanistan’s help, Afghanistan will be there with you.’

Such a situation is extremely unlikely, however. Despite months of tension and tough talk between Washington and Islamabad, the two allies appear to be working to ease tension.

In a two-day visit to Islamabad, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued stern warnings and asked for more cooperation in winding down the war in Afghanistan, but ruled out ‘boots on the ground’ in North Waziristan, where Washington has been pushing Pakistan to tackle the Haqqani network.” Read more.

Iraq Sides With Iran, Sends Essential Aid to Syria’s Assad – “More than six months after the start of the Syrian uprising, Iraq is offering key moral and financial support to the country’s embattled president, undermining a central U.S. policy objective and raising fresh concerns that Iraq is drifting further into the orbit of an American arch rival — Iran. Iraq’s stance has dealt an embarrassing setback to the Obama administration, which has sought to enlist Muslim allies in its campaign to isolate Syrian autocrat Bashar al-Assad. While other Arab states have downgraded ties with Assad, Iraq has moved in the opposite direction, hosting official visits by Syrians, signing pacts to expand business ties and offering political support.” Read more.

Japan: 3/11 Earthquake Caused Archipelago to Move Eight Feet East and Sunk The Nation Nearly One Inch

10/22/2011 Leave a comment

By Julian Ryall – “The massive earthquake that struck Japan in March shifted the entire archipelago nearly 8 feet closer to the United States and caused the nation to sink close to 1 inch.

The magnitude-9 quake – the largest in recorded history in Japan – also jolted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches.

Experts at the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan have confirmed that the standard datum of levelling – the benchmark for measuring heights above sea level throughout Japan – sank 2.4cm (0.9 inch) as a result of the earthquake.

The change in the figure was the first since the Great Kanto Earthquake killed an estimated 105,000 people in Tokyo in 1932.

That quake had a magnitude of 8.2 and caused the ground level to sink 3.4 inches into the Pacific.

The movements were even more pronounced in parts of north-east Japan that were closest to the epicentre of the earthquake.

Experts and the GIA have calculated that the Oshika Peninsula, just to the north of the devastated town of Ishinomaki, shifted more than 17 feet to the east and sank nearly 4 feet into the Pacific Ocean. Both figures are records for land mass movements caused by a tremor in Japan, and the impact is clearly visible in the villages that dot the inlets of the peninsula.

Concrete jetties for local fishing boats are now beneath the surface of the water and the pine forests that grew above the former high tide mark have turned brown and died as their roots come into contact with salt water.” Source.

US: An Unprecedented Number of Americans — Nearly 26 Million — Are Either Unemployed or Underemployed

10/20/2011 Leave a comment

Change You Can Believe In

By Ben Baden – “While the number of unemployed workers has held steady at around 14 million in recent months, another telling measure of frustration in the labor market—the number of underemployed individuals—rose for a third consecutive month in September, by almost a half of a million people.

Almost 9.3 million Americans are considered underemployed, defined by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as working part-time for economic reasons, such as unfavorable business conditions or seasonal declines in demand. That’s up from just over 8 million in July, but down from a peak of about 9.5 million in September 2010. In addition, about 2.5 million individuals are considered ‘marginally attached to the labor force,’ meaning they were not in the labor force, wanted and were available for work, and looked for a job sometime in the prior 12 months. (They are not counted as unemployed because they had not looked for a job in the past four weeks prior to the survey.)

Put together, almost 26 million Americans are either unemployed, marginally attached to the labor force, or involuntarily working part-time—a number experts say is unprecedented.

‘The labor force is substantially underutilized relative to what we experienced in most of the post-World War II period,’ says Patrick O’Keefe, director of economic research at accounting firm J.H. Cohn and former deputy assistant secretary in the U.S. Department of Labor.” Read more.

US ‘Misery Index’ Rises to Highest Since 1983 – “An unofficial gauge of human misery in the United States rose last month to a 28-year high as Americans struggled with rising inflation and high unemployment. The misery index — which is simply the sum of the country’s inflation and unemployment rates — rose to 13.0, pushed up by higher price data the government reported on Wednesday. The data underscores the extent that Americans continue to suffer even two years after a deep recession ended, with a weak economic recovery imperiling President Barack Obama’s hopes of winning reelection next year.” Read more.

A Long, Steep Drop for Americans’ Standard of Living – “Think life is not as good as it used to be, at least in terms of your wallet? You’d be right about that. The standard of living for Americans has fallen longer and more steeply over the past three years than at any time since the US government began recording it five decades ago. Bottom line: The average individual now has $1,315 less in disposable income than he or she did three years ago at the onset of the Great Recession – even though the recession ended, technically speaking, in mid-2009. That means less money to spend at the spa or the movies, less for vacations, new carpeting for the house, or dinner at a restaurant.” Read more.

Bolivia: Growing Mystery Surrounds Volcano Inflating Like a Giant Balloon With Astonishing Speed

10/20/2011 Leave a comment

By Andrea Mustain – “Should anyone ever decide to make a show called ‘CSI: Geology,’ a group of scientists studying a mysterious and rapidly inflating South American volcano have got the perfect storyline.

Researchers from several universities are essentially working as geological detectives, using a suite of tools to piece together the restive peak’s past in order to understand what it is doing now, and better diagnose what may lie ahead.

It’s a mystery they’ve yet to solve.

Uturuncu is a nearly 20,000-foot-high (6,000 meters) volcano in southwest Bolivia. Scientists recently discovered the volcano is inflating with astonishing speed.

‘I call this ‘volcano forensics,’ because we’re using so many different techniques to understand this phenomenon,’ said Oregon State University professor Shan de Silva, a volcanologist on the research team.

Researchers realized about five years ago that the area below and around Uturuncu is steadily rising — blowing up like a giant balloon under a wide disc of land some 43 miles (70 kilometers) across. Satellite data revealed the region was inflating by 1 to 2 centimeters (less than an inch) per year and had been doing so for at least 20 years, when satellite observations began.

‘It’s one of the fastest uplifting volcanic areas on Earth,’ de Silva told OurAmazingPlanet.’What we’re trying to do is understand why there is this rapid inflation, and from there we’ll try to understand what it’s going to lead to.'” Read more.

Ground Zero Mosque Honcho Provides Shady Proof of Property Tax Payment with Doctored Statements

10/19/2011 Leave a comment

Taking Taqiyya to a whole new level.  I’d love to know if there is a law against doctoring official Finance Department receipts …

By Erin Einhorn – “The real estate developer who wants to put a mosque near Ground Zero tried to pull a fast one Tuesday about his property tax woes.

When the Daily News contacted developer Sharif el-Gamal about the $30,000 he owed the city in back property taxes for the future Islamic center in lower Manhattan, he insisted he had already taken care of it.

‘The check was sent in,’ Gamal insisted to The News during an interview about 3:30 p.m. ‘The taxes have been paid.’

Gamal was supposed to be making quarterly payments for a $224,000 tax bill his company had run up last year on the Park Place building.

But he missed a scheduled $30,000 payment that was due on Oct. 3.

When the Daily News asked for proof of payment, Gamal forwarded an email receipt from the city Finance Department’s online payment system showing a $30,435.11 payment made on Oct. 5 at 1:54 p.m.

The email receipt Gamal forwarded had a receipt number of WWW23334165.

There was a problem, however.

The Finance Department says that payment was actually made yesterday at 3:55 p.m. – roughly half an hour after Gamal claimed he’d already paid.

The Finance Department sent over what they say is the real receipt, which had the same code number of WWW23334165.

It was dated Tuesday.

City officials say receipt numbers are sequential and that the one in question was issued Tuesday – not two weeks ago as Gamal claimed in his apparently doctored proof of payment.

Gamal apparently also sent reporters from different news organizations receipts with different time stamps.” Read more.

Azores: Experts Concerned With Abnormal Seismic Activity

10/19/2011 Leave a comment

“Experts in the Azores have alerted the population of São Miguel Island for seismic activity which they considered to be above normal. The seismic events where located in the system of Fogo and Congro lakes, the central region of the island.

‘The situation is ongoing and the number of microseisms is slightly above reference values’ said Wednesday João Luís Gaspar from the Center of Volcanology and Geological Risk Assessment (CVARG) of the University of the Azores.

He also said that the seismic activity was the result of ‘very low magnitude earthquakes’ adding that ‘none of which have been felt by the population.’

Declining to comment on what the evolution of the crisis could be João Luís Gaspar recalled that ‘seismological activity is difficult to predict,’ but that the possibility could not be eliminated of an earthquake occurrence which may be felt by the population. He said, ‘It does not mean it will happen; only that one cannot eliminate that possibility.’

According to the CVARG website, the Fogo-Congro system is one of the most critical seismologic areas of the archipelago where accumulated tensions exist resulting from the lithospheric interplay of the Eurasian, African and American plates.” Read more.

Dead German Satellite Will Fall to Earth This Week

10/17/2011 Leave a comment

By Denise Chow – “A defunct German satellite is expected to plunge to Earth this week, but exactly when and where the satellite will fall remains a mystery.

The massive German Roentgen Satellite, or ROSAT, is expected to plummet to Earth on Saturday or Sunday (Oct. 22 or 23), though German space officials have also offered a wider re-entry window of between Oct. 21 and Oct. 25. This latest falling satellite comes about a month after a dead NASA climate satellite, called the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), plunged into the Pacific Ocean in late September.

The 2.4-ton X-ray space observatory is expected to break up as it travels through Earth’s atmosphere, but some large pieces will likely make it through the intense heat of re-entry. According to German aerospace officials, approximately 1.6 tons of satellite debris, consisting primarily of up to 30 large glass and ceramic fragments, could survive the journey through the atmosphere and reach the Earth’s surface.

‘We don’t expect big parts to re-enter, except the mirror and the glass and ceramic parts,’ Jan Woerner, head of the executive board of the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR), Germany’s space agency, told SPACE.com. ‘Usually during re-entry, you have rather clear burning of all the elements, but glass and ceramics may survive and may come down in bigger pieces.’

There is a 1-in-2.000 chance a piece of ROSAT could strike someone on Earth, DLR officials have said. That’s a slightly higher risk than the 1-in-3,200 chance of a debris hit NASA gave for the UARS satellite fall.” Read more.

Cognitive Dissonance? Obama to Position Himself as Leader of ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Movement While Anti-Semitism and Communist Sympathies Taint Protests

10/17/2011 4 comments

By Yitzhak Benhorin – “Several anti-Semitic incidents have been reported during ‘Occupy Wall Street’ demonstrations in New York as Jews were blamed for the turmoil in America’s financial markets. In addition, anti-Israel signs were raised against ‘Israel’s occupation of Gaza’.

The ‘Emergency Committee for Israel’ has published a hard-to-watch clip in which Jews are attacked and blamed for the financial crisis and assistance to Israel. The committee is a neo-conservative body headed by William Kristol, the Jewish editor of the Weekly Standard, which aims to convince Jews to vote for a Republican presidential candidate.

It should be noted that the video is political in nature and seeks to tie President Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to the protesters, urging them to ‘stand up to the mob’.

The White House, on its part, is trying to take advantage of the demonstrations against Wall Street while the anti-Obama camp is attempting to tie the protesters to the far Left and Israel’s enemies.

In the clip, a young demonstrator is seen arguing with an older Jewish man wearing a yarmulke. At one point, the young man says, ‘I work, earn seven dollars an hour. You have the money. You don’t speak English? You are from Israel? Go back to Israel.'” Read more.

Obama plans to hijack Occupy Wall Street – “President Obama and his team have decided to turn public anger at Wall Street into a central tenet of their reelection strategy. The move comes as the Occupy Wall Street protests gain momentum across the country and as polls show deep public distrust of the nation’s major financial institutions. And it sets up what strategists see as a potent line of attack against Republican front-runner Mitt Romney, a former investment executive whom Obama aides plan to portray as a wealthy Wall Street sympathizer.” Read more.

Obama: Martin Luther King Jr. would have backed ‘Occupy’ protests – “Drawing parallels between civil rights legend Martin Luther King Jr. and his own leadership challenges, President Obama on Sunday dedicated a memorial to King on the Mall by saying King would have sympathized with activists demanding social justice from Wall Street. ‘At this moment, when our politics appear so sharply polarized and faith in our institutions so greatly diminished, we need more than ever to take heed of Dr. King’s teachings,’ said Mr. Obama, who praised King’s belief in the ‘creative tension of nonviolent protests.'” Read more.

Communist Party U.S.A. Spokesman Gets Overwhelming Applause from Occupy Chicago – “Last night during the tent city construction at Occupy Chicago on Michigan Ave, John Bachtell, a spokesperson from the national board of the Communist Party U.S.A., addressed the angry mob of nearly 3000. He claimed to ‘bring greetings and support’ from the party, to the occupy movement. Bachtell received a very warm welcome and overwhelming applause form the ‘occupiers.’ ‘We will be with this movement… til we make all the changes that we know we have to make… This movement is part and parcel in the great tradition in this country of people powered democracy… This is the next big step of the democratic revolution in our country.’ – Bachtell said.” Read more.

Sudan: Authorities Threaten to Raze Three Churches in Bid to Rid Country of Christianity

10/13/2011 Leave a comment

KHARTOUM, Sudan, October 12 (CDN) — “Local authorities have threatened to demolish three church buildings in Omdurman as part of a long-standing bid to rid Sudan of Christianity, Christian sources told Compass.

Officials from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Public Utilities-Khartoum State appeared at the three church sites in Omdurman, on the Nile River opposite Khartoum, the afternoon of Sept. 11, threatening to demolish the structures if the churches continued to conduct worship services, church leaders said.

Church leaders from the three churches in the Madinat al Fath area of Omdurman – the Sudanese Church of Christ, the Episcopal Church of Sudan and the Roman Catholic Church – said they were surprised to see government officials come to their church premises and accuse them of operating churches on government land without permission. The church leaders told Compass the buildings were not located on government land and required no permission.

They said that, starting at 2 p.m. the officials asked leaders of the Sudanese Church of Christ who had given them permission to build on government land, and then proceeded to the other two churches. The officials marked the three church buildings for demolition with red crosses, saying, ‘We are going to demolish these churches,’ the church leaders said.

Jaafer al Sudani, manager of Church Affairs in the Ministry of Guidance and Religious Endowment, told Compass that officials there had no knowledge of church buildings to be demolished. The state planning officials insist that the churches are operating on government land.

Citing a growing tide of hostility toward Christians, members of the threatened churches said they were concerned about their future.

‘These are clearly evil plans directed against churches and Christians in this country,’ said Kornules Yousif, an area Christian leader.

‘This is serious,’ said another church member who asked to remain unnamed. ‘We do not want them to demolish our churches.’

Local Muslims complain of the Christian presence in the area, Yousif said.

“Muslims say churches are not supposed to be given permission to operate because the number of Muslims is greater than that of Christians,” he said.” Read more.

Obama Responds to Egyptian Military’s Massacre of Christians … By Asking Christians to Show Restraint

10/13/2011 4 comments

The sooner this sorry excuse of a leader is voted out of office, the better …

By Keith Koffler – “President Obama has responded to the Egyptian military’s massacre of Coptic Christian protestors in Cairo Sunday with a pointedly even-handed statement that calls equally on Christians and the military to show restraint.

‘The President is deeply concerned about the violence in Egypt that has led to a tragic loss of life among demonstrators and security forces,’ Obama said in a statement released this week. ‘Now is a time for restraint on all sides so that Egyptians can move forward together to forge a strong and united Egypt.’

Incredibly, Obama is not only equating the deaths of peaceful protestors and their killers, but he is suggesting that Egypt’s increasingly persecuted Christian minority should show as much ‘restraint’ as their tormentors and refrain from vigorously objecting to the growing abuse.

More than two dozen people, most of them Copts, were killed as security forces attacked demonstrators protesting the burning of a church.

The Egyptian military has denied the killings, but news reports, eyewitness accounts, and videos posted to the Internet contradict the claims, with footage showing armed personnel carriers ramming through crowds of protestors and a soldier firing at them. The dead, according to forensic reports, were either crushed by being run over or were shot.

Three soldiers are also said to have died, but this appears to have occurred as protestors were fighting for their lives. There can be no mistaking that this was a slaughter of civilians.

The church burning was only the latest in an escalating series of attacks by Islamists against Christians and their churches.” Read more.
