Magnitude 6.2 and 6.9 Quakes Shake Gulf of California – More Strong Tremors Shake Earth in 24 Hours

04/12/2012 Leave a comment

RT – “A 6.9 magnitude earthquake has jolted Mexico’s California peninsula. The tremor’s epicenter was 10.3 kilometers below the surface, and 133 kilometers from the town of Guerrero Negro.

No data about the quake’s consequences is available at the moment.

The shock follows a less powerful 6.4 tremor that shook the mountains of western Mexico on Wednesday. It made tall buildings sway in Mexico City, 322 kilometers away, sending people rushing out of buildings on to the streets.

This was the latest strong earthquake to jolt the planet in the last 24 hours.

On Wednesday, an 8.6 quake off Indonesia was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks up to 8.2 in magnitude. Five people died as a result. The tremors off Sumatra’s Aceh province put the entire Indian Ocean region on tsunami alert, prompting people in coastal cities to rush for higher ground.

A tsunami that followed a similar earthquake off Aceh in 2004 killed nearly 230,000 people, most of them in Indonesia.

Mexico has been no stranger to quakes in recent weeks.” Read more.

Indonesia Trembles, India and Sri Lanka Panics After Two Major Earthquakes Strike Off Coast of Aceh Province

04/11/2012 Leave a comment

By Julian Gavaghan and Rick Dewsbury – “Millions of people living along the coastline of the Indian Ocean were left breathing a sigh of relief today after warnings of a devastating tsunami were lifted following two massive earthquakes.

Panic spread across the region after a 8.7 magnitude tremor struck 270 miles off the Indonesian province of Aceh – which bore the brunt of the brunt of Boxing Day tidal wave of 2004.

Tsunami warnings were instantly issued in Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Burma, Thailand, the Maldives, Malaysia, Pakistan, Somalia, Oman, Iran, Bangladesh, Kenya, South Africa and Singapore.

In the Indonesian city of Banda Aceh, terrified residents screamed ‘God is great!’ as they jumped into cars and the backs of motorcycles, clogging streets as they fled to high ground.

Buildings shook for four minutes and there were reports of people jumping from windows in a desperate attempt to escape.

Patients also poured out of hospitals, some with drips still attached to their arms. In some places, electricity was briefly cut.

There were also scenes of panic in Bangalore, India and Columbo in Sri Lanka as terrified people fled their homes and offices.

Then, two hours later, a massive aftershock – with a similarly huge magnitude of 8.2 – struck only 110 miles further out to sea, unleashing even more panic.

Tsunami waves, measuring 3ft in height, hit Sumatra, the island Aceh is on. But experts found the both quakes were the wrong type to issue a disaster and the warnings were lifted.

Roger Musson, seismologist at the British geological survey who has studied Sumatra’s fault lines, said the earthquake was a strike-slip quake.

The tsunami triggering 9.1-magnitude earthquake of seven years go – which killed 230,000 people, three quarters of whom lived in Aceh – was a thrust quake, which causes the sea bed to flip up.” Read more.

Mexico: Major 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Acapulco and Oaxaca, Felt as Far as Away as Guatemala City

03/20/2012 Leave a comment

USGS now calling this a 7.4 magnitude earthquake …

“MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – A major earthquake struck Mexico on Tuesday, damaging buildings, scaring residents and prompting evacuations across the capital, although there were no early reports of serious damage.

Office buildings shook and office employees fled into the street when the 7.6-magnitude quake rattled Mexico City. Cell phone lines went down and traffic snarled in the capital moments after the quake, which lasted for more than a minute.

‘I swear I never felt one so strong, I thought the building was going to collapse,’ said Sebastian Herrera, 42, a businessman from a neighborhood hit hard in Mexico’s devastating 1985 earthquake, which killed thousands.

Television images showed part of a bridge collapsed onto a vehicle on Tuesday. It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was injured.

Some buildings in the trendy district of Condesa were cracked, though mayor Marcelo Ebrard said via his twitter account there was no sign of major damage to the city from the air after conducting a helicopter flyover.

President Felipe Calderon also said on his twitter account there were no reports of serious damage from the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey, or USGS, said the quake registered magnitude 7.6 and that its epicenter was in Guerrero state, near the Pacific Coast resort of Acapulco.” Read more.

Strong 6.9 and 6.1 Earthquakes Shake Japan, But No Apparent Damage

03/14/2012 Leave a comment

“TOKYO – A series of earthquakes rattled Tokyo and northeastern Japan on Wednesday evening but caused no apparent damage or injury in the same region hit by last year’s devastating tsunami.

A magnitude-6.8 earthquake [upgraded to 6.9] first struck the southern coast of Hokkaido island in the evening, causing a small tsunami. Tsunami advisories were issued along the northern Pacific coast, prompting some communities to advise residents to evacuate coastal homes.

A swelling of 8 inches was observed in water at the port of Hachinohe in Aomori about an hour after the tremor, with smaller changes reported elsewhere. The agency lifted all tsunami advisories within about 90 minutes.

Within about three hours, a magnitude-6.1 quake shook buildings in the capital. It was centered just off the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo, at a rather shallow 9 miles below the sea surface.

Narita International Airport briefly closed runways for inspection but later resumed operation. Several local train services were suspended for safety checks.

There were no abnormalities reported at nuclear power plants after the two earthquakes, operators said. Nearly all of Japan’s nuclear plants are offline for safety inspections.” Read more.

Japan: Quake Researchers Warn of Tokyo’s ‘Big One’, ‘We Must Prepare for the Earthquake That Will Happen’ – “A year on from one of the biggest earthquakes in recorded history, Japanese scientists are warning anew that Tokyo could soon be hit by a quake that will kill thousands and cause untold damage. Greater Tokyo, home to 35 million tightly packed people, has seen a three-fold increase in tectonic activity since the magnitude 9.0 undersea quake that unleashed a killer tsunami last March. Every day, an average of nearly 1.5 quakes are recorded in and around the city, one of the most populated places on earth.” Read more.

Japan: Nuke Expert Believes It Will Be The End For Tokyo If Earthquake Cracks Unit 4 Pool and Leaks – “Most discussion of the No. 4 spent fuel pool has focused on an earthquake causing the pool to collapse. This video is different because it reveals: 1. A crack, rather than the collapse of the pool itself, can be the end of Tokyo, 2. The quake that could put a crack in the pool and be the end of Tokyo does not have to be a large one, 3. The sense of shock when people in Japan are made aware of this information for the first time” Read more.

Japan: Quake Researchers Warn of Tokyo’s ‘Big One’, ‘We Must Prepare for the Earthquake That Will Happen’

03/06/2012 Leave a comment

Japan Today – “TOKYO — A year on from one of the biggest earthquakes in recorded history, Japanese scientists are warning anew that Tokyo could soon be hit by a quake that will kill thousands and cause untold damage.

Greater Tokyo, home to 35 million tightly packed people, has seen a three-fold increase in tectonic activity since the magnitude 9.0 undersea quake that unleashed a killer tsunami last March.

Every day, an average of nearly 1.5 quakes are recorded in and around the city, one of the most populated places on earth.

But Tokyoites are so used to being shaken in their beds or at their desks that the majority pass almost without comment.

The city is, without doubt, one of the most earthquake-proofed places in the world. Even the monster quake of March 11 last year that struck just 370 kilometers away caused little structural damage.

Public transport was thrown into temporary disarray, leaving thousands stranded, but no buildings collapsed and there were no large-scale casualties.

The University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute says the city, built at the intersection of four tectonic plates, has a 50% chance of suffering a major quake—anything above a magnitude 7.0—in the next four years.

‘We must prepare for the earthquake that will happen,’ says Asahiko Taira, executive director of the government’s Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology.

A simulation by the agency suggests that if an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 occurred in the northern part of Tokyo Bay on a weekday evening, around 6,400 people would die, with 160,000 injured.

Approximately 471,000 homes and buildings would be destroyed, most of them by fires, or because of liquefaction, a process where reclaimed land turns to mush.

Around 96 million tons of waste would be instantly generated—four times the total left behind by the tsunami that hit the northeast coast.

Millions of people would be unable to get home and emergency shelters would be over-run. More than one million households would be without water, gas, electricity and telephones for several days.

Economically, the cost would be a colossal $1.45 trillion—around a third of Japan’s GDP.” Read more.

Flashback: Oklahoma Earthquakes Stronger Than Fracking Tremors, Experts Say – “Thousands of times every day, drilling deep underground causes the earth to tremble. But don’t blame the surprise flurry of earthquakes in Oklahoma on man’s thirst for oil and gas, experts say. The weekend quakes were far stronger than the puny tremors from drilling – especially the controversial practice of hydraulic fracturing. The weekend quakes didn’t have the mark of man. They were a force of nature… The magnitude-5.6 quake that rocked Oklahoma three miles underground had the power of 3,800 tons of TNT, which is nearly 2,000 times stronger than the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.” Read more.

“PORT VILA, Vanuatu (AP) — A strong earthquake has struck about 77 miles west of the capital of the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-7.1 quake struck Thursday. The quake struck at a depth of 14 miles.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a bulletin saying ‘no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists’ from the quake but warned that local tsunamis could occur within 62 miles of the epicenter.
