One Week After Norway Announces Backing Palestinian Bid for UN Recognition, Israel May Have To Call Off Oslo Accords

07/24/2011 Leave a comment

July 17, Reuters – “Norway, host of the 1993 Palestinian-Israeli peace accords, said on Monday it was ‘perfectly legitimate’ for Palestinians to take their case for statehood to the United Nations for voting in September.

‘We will consider very carefully the proposed text that’s to be put forward by the Palestinians in the coming weeks,’ said Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere, with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas beside him at a press conference.

‘Norway believes it is perfectly legitimate for the Palestinian president to turn to the United Nations with such proposals,’ Stoere said, adding that continued negotiations with Israel will be required in any case.

The United States and Israel have opposed Abbas’ plan, backed by the Arab League, to bring the Palestinians’ long quest for statehood to a vote in New York.

Abbas said on Monday the plan was still on.

‘We will seek to go to the UN next September in order to obtain membership for the state of Palestine,’ he said.” Read more.

Israel looking into calling off Oslo Accords in response to Palestinian UN bid – “A team headed by National Security Adviser Ya’akov Amidror is looking into calling off the Oslo Accords in response to the Palestinian Authority’s unilateral plan to gain United Nations recognition for an independent state. The Prime Minister’s Bureau confirmed yesterday only that the NSC was discussing many alternatives ahead of September, and would be presenting them to the political echelon for a decision when it was done.” Read more.

Something Rotten in the State of Norway

“… Many of these agencies and individuals later changed their articles to reflect the developing ‘lone nut right-wing anti-immigrant extremist’ theory. Fast forward to a few hours later, and The Atlantic Wire has changed its site to include the following disclaimer:

From BBC News: ‘A terrorism expert tells the BBC that Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, a terror group that claimed responsibility for the explosion in Oslo, was not behind the attack.’ Previously, a New York Times story cited a terrorism expert who mentioned that the group claimed credit for the attack. But the paper also noted: ‘It is not uncommon for terrorist groups to advance claims of responsibility for high-profile attacks, only to have the claims prove to be spurious.’

Some wag might suggest that the accusation of Islamists deliberately lying in this manner is ‘Islamophobic.’

In any case, the latest news from Yahoo is that the ‘lone nut’ bought six tons of fertilizer–an amount that one might think would elicit some suspicion in consideration of the Oklahoma City bombing, as well as that fertilizer bombs are evidently a favored Islamist method of massacre. Moreover, instead of one ‘lone nut,’ it is reported that ‘police investigated witness accounts of a second shooter.’

This current attack does in fact resemble the McVeigh situation, as pointed out by Gates of Vienna:

I’ve read several accounts that describe the Oslo murderer as ‘a Norwegian Timothy McVeigh.’ The crime in downtown Oslo does resemble the Oklahoma City atrocity–a powerful vehicle bomb, possibly a fertilizer bomb, detonated near a government building for the purpose of causing mass casualties. Then, after initial alarm about Islam, we hear that the alleged perpetrator is a crazed right-wing zealot bent on killing as many of his fellow citizens as possible.

Yes, Oslo and Oklahoma City definitely have a lot in common in this regard.

But one thing many people seem to forget–and which they may never have known, thanks to the American government’s actions and the media spin that followed–is that there almost certainly was an Islamic terror connection to the Oklahoma City bombing.” Read more.

Why It Wasn’t Unreasonable to Suspect Muslim Terrorism in Norway

07/23/2011 Leave a comment

By Aaron Goldstein – “In light of the fact that the man responsible for two heinous acts of terrorism which have thus far resulted in the deaths of 87 people is a native born, non-Muslim Norwegian, John Tabin asks if large segments of the media (including bloggers like him and me) were wrong to speculate that this was an act of Islamic radicals.

For his part, Tabin plans to answer that question in depth at a later date. So allow me to give my thoughts. I would like to make the case that it was not at all unreasonable to speculate that Muslims were involved in this attack.

First, it was only a year ago that Norwegian authorities thwarted an al Qaeda plot to attack Norway.

Second, today’s attacks were nearly simultaneous. An al Qaeda calling card.

Third, it was only last week that that Norwegian authorities indicted Mullah Krekar, founder of the Ansar al-Islam, for threats against Norwegian politicians.

Fourth, a Muslim organization called Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami claimed responsibility for the attack. This is the most notable point of all. I mean what kind of people brag about murdering innocent civilians they did not kill?

Finally, consider all the acts of terrorism which have occurred since September 11, 2001 – Bali, Madrid, London, Mumbai, Fort Hood not to mention all those suicide bombings in Israel. All of those attacks were carried out by Muslim entities. Frankly, it would have been irresponsible to discount the possibility of yet another Muslim terrorist attack.” Read more.

Norway: Labour Party Youth Camp in Utøya Attacked by Gunman Dressed as Police Officer, At Least 80 Killed

07/22/2011 28 comments

BBC News Live and others are confirming a report that a man dressed as a police officer was shooting at people in a youth camp on the island of Utøya, west of Oslo.  Many are reportedly hit.  It is unclear if this is related to the recent bomb blast in Norway.

Update 1: The Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg had at one point been scheduled to attend this rally on Utøya tomorrow.  The former Prime Minister, however, was due to speak there today.

Update 2: A police operation is ongoing.  Several people injured.  The police are evacuating everyone off the island, some are attempting to swim away to safety.  Anti-terrorist units sent in.

Update 3: One man has reportedly been arrested on Utøya. NRK has reported that an Islamist group calling itself ‘Helpers of the Global Jihad’ have now posted a message stating that this is only the beginning of the reaction to Norwegian papers publishing cartoons of Mohammed …

Update 4: Several people have been killed in Utøya, according to Norwegian TV2.  Some reports are saying eyewitnesses saw more than 20 bodies at the camp.  BBC is reporting that Police Chief Sveinung Sponheim in Oslo says the shooter had also been spotted in the capital prior to the explosions.

Update 5: Man arrested is Caucasian, no word yet on what ties this individual has to terror groups.  Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, speaking at a press conference in Oslo, says ‘We will find the guilty and hold them responsible.’

Update 6: Islamist group ‘Helpers of the Global Jihad’ are now denying any involvement in today’s attack.  So far there does not appear to be any solid Islamist connection. Suspect may have acted alone.  No word yet on motive. More details will come to light in the coming hours and days.

Update 7:  The death toll has, sadly, suddenly risen to at least 84+ killed on Utøya. (Update 7/25 – Police announced Monday that they had dramatically overcounted the number of people slain in a shooting spree at a political youth group’s island retreat and were lowering the confirmed death toll from 86 to 68.)

Update 8:  Witnesses suggest that a second shooter may have been involved.  Police are investigating.  Meanwhile, questions surround whether or not the known shooter’s Facebook page was updated while he was in police custody.  Also, it appears that he had apparent neo-Nazi links.  Did one or more of these possible neo-Nazi links have access to his Facebook page?

Norway: Multiple Fatalities and Injuries After Massive Vehicle Bomb in Oslo

07/22/2011 2 comments

Some news reports are talking about the possibility that this was the work of Islamists.

Update 1: NRK has reported that an Islamist group calling itself ‘Helpers of the Global Jihad’ have now posted a message stating that this is only the beginning of the reaction to Norwegian papers publishing cartoons of Mohammed …

Update 2: Islamist group ‘Helpers of the Global Jihad’ are now denying any involvement in today’s attack.  So far there does not appear to be any solid Islamist connection. Suspect may have acted alone.  No word yet on motive or how he could have single-handedly produced such a powerful explosion if this was all perpetrated by a single homegrown terrorist.

“A huge explosion wrecked government buildings in central Oslo on Friday including

Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg’s office, killing at least one person and injuring several others.

Norwegian broadcaster NRK said one person was confirmed dead in the explosion.

The cause of the blast was unknown but the tangled wreckage of a car was outside one building and the damage appeared consistent to witnesses with that from car bombs. Police and fire officials declined comment on the cause.

The blast blew out most windows on the 17-story building housing Stoltenberg’s office, as well as nearby ministries including the oil ministry, which was on fire.

Heavy debris littered the streets and a tall plume of brown smoke over the city center.

A Reuters correspondent counted at least eight injured people. Norwegian news agency NTB said that Stoltenberg was safe in the blast, which happened around 3:30 p.m. (1330 GMT).” Read more.

US: Federal Government Planning for Potential Default, Canada Watches Closely

07/21/2011 2 comments

By Kristina Cooke and Tim Ahmann – “PHILADELPHIA — The U.S. Federal Reserve is actively preparing for the possibility that the United States could default as a deadline for raising the government’s US$14.3-trillion borrowing limit looms, a top Fed policymaker said on Wednesday.

Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Charles Plosser said the Fed has for the past few months been working closely with Treasury, ironing out what to do if the world’s biggest economy runs out of cash on August 2.

‘We are in contingency planning mode,’ Plosser told Reuters in an interview at the regional central bank’s headquarters in Philadelphia. ‘We are all engaged … It’s a very active process.’

Plosser said his ‘gut feeling’ was that President Barack Obama and Congress will come to an agreement to increase the Treasury’s borrowing authority in time to avert a default on government obligations.” Read more.

Carney warns U.S. default would have ‘profound implications’ – “The governor of the Bank of Canada, Mark Carney, says a U.S. government default on its debt would have “profound implications” for financial markets and that ‘it’s our view that’s not something that should be tested.’ Carney said Wednesday the bank does not expect the U.S. will default, but that there’s no certainty about what the effects would be if it did.” Read more.

Obama’s Muslim Outreach: Epic Fail

07/20/2011 Leave a comment

By Mark Tapson – “When Barack Obama took over the Oval Office from George W. Bush in 2009, he was riding the crest of a tidal wave of gullibility among his supporters, who believed him to be the Chosen One bringing salvation and deliverance from the wasteland of the Bush years. In their fevered imagination, the inept, moronic, old-fashioned cowboy Bush had disastrously bungled his terms in office and caused the world to hate us. Now the multicultural, transnational, post-American demigod Obama had arrived, a deus ex machina from the heavens, offering hope and change to all. He was going to get the world to like us, really like us again.

But this self-delusional, media-assisted narrative has a tragicomic twist: two and a half years into his term, Obama not only hasn’t healed the oceans, harmonized the races, boosted the economy, or repaired our supposedly tattered reputation abroad, he has actually exacerbated all those issues. And now it’s confirmed that he hasn’t been any more successful at resolving the clash of civilizations either.

‘My job to the Muslim world,’ Obama said in his very first interview as President, for the Arabic-language network Al-Arabiya, ‘is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy.’ In that case, to quote from Cool Hand Luke, what we’ve got here is a failure to communicate. According to a stunning new poll of six Arab nations – Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia – by the nonpartisan Arab American Institute, the United States is viewed even less favorably in the Arab world today than it was during the final year of Bush’s administration.” Read more.

Biologists: Conditions at Fukushima Are Much Worse Than They Had Thought

07/20/2011 Leave a comment

Chief Nuclear Engineer A. Gundersen: “The Japanese announced that it’s gonna be 10 years before they begin — begin — to remove those cores from the bottom of the containment.  There’s no technology right now to remove them.  Remember, they’ve melted through the nuclear reactor and they’re lying on the floor of the nuclear containment.   Now, at Three Mile Island they had melted on to the bottom of the reactor, but not through the reactor.  So this is brand new.  And, you know, it’s sort of like trying to peel an egg off the bottom of a frying pan.  If it’s cooked too long it’s a very, very complicated and difficult process and that’s what we’re facing at Fukushima in the long-term cleanup.  So in the meantime there’ll be an awful lot of liquid radioactive waste that will have to be processed for 10 or perhaps 20 years…

Some friends of mine are biologists that had worked at Chernobyl and went to Japan to do some scientific work over there.  They went anticipating things were gonna be bad.  I got a call this week from them and they said, ‘You know, things are really, really bad.’  So these are hardened scientists who are used to dealing with radiation, and they believe that conditions at Fukushima are much worse than they had thought…”

Report: Japan to name new Fukushima ‘hot spots’ – “The Japanese government will announce new “hot spots” recommended for evacuation near the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant possibly “within the next couple of days,” Kyodo News reported Thursday, citing Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano. Late last month, for the first time since the nuclear crisis was triggered by the March earthquake and tsunami, the government designated about 100 households in the city of Date in Fukushima Prefecture as being located in the so-called hot spots, where radiation levels are sporadically higher than other locations nearby.” Read more.

1 Billion Becquerels Per Hour Emission of Radioactive Materials from Fukushima I Nuke Plant at the End of June

07/20/2011 Leave a comment

“That’s an amazing reduction from the maximum emission of 2,000 terabecquerels per hour on March 15, it is actually one-2 millionth of the maximum, says TEPCO in the Reference No. 2 of the progress report on the ‘roadmap’ to God knows where.

Is this number, 1 billion becquerels per hour emission, good? TEPCO’s Matsumoto, in the press conference on July 19, avoided the judgment, and said he didn’t know, but it was one-2 millionth of what it had been on March 15.

On closer reading of the document, though, I noticed one strange thing about this emission number. TEPCO is talking about the radiation emission measured in cesium (cesium-134 and -137), not in iodine equivalence.

To come up with the iodine-131 equivalence, you have to multiply cesium-134 by 3, and cesium-137 by 40 (according to INES handbook). TEPCO doesn’t even give the breakdown of cesium 134 and -137 in its calculation of 1 billion becquerels/hour number. Other nuclides have even higher multiplier: americium-241 is 8,000, plutonium-239 is 10,000.

If half of 1 billion becquerels is cesium-134 and the other half is cesium-137, then in iodine-131 equivalence like in the previous calculations, the emission would be:

(0.5*3)+(0.5*40)=1.5+20=21.5 billion becquerels/hour

Instead of 1 billion becquerels/hour, it would be 21.4 billion becquerels/hour in iodine equivalence, or 516 billion becquerels in one day. In less than 2 days, we would be talking about over 1 terabecquerels.” Read more.

If this high level of radiation is falling in British Columbia, imagine the accumulating effect this is having on crops, meat, milk and anything else we put into our bodies from the northwest, and all affected areas …

Flashback: Doctor: Fukushima Fallout Will Result in Millions of Baby Deaths and New Cancer Victims, We Have Created a ‘Valley of Death’ – “… the prestigious Doctor Mark Sircus released a new report concurring with a host of scientists and other doctors giving evidence that people of Japan and United States have been subjected to dangerous levels of radiation since Fukushima nuclear plant meltdowns, and also subjected to a tight cover-up by authorities and media, the result of which will be millions of baby deaths and new cancer victims. Japanese and American children are already suffering with symptoms that appear to be the first signs of Radiation Sickness.” Read more.

Hedge Fund Founder Ray Dalio Expects Currency Collapse in 2012 or 2013

07/19/2011 Leave a comment

By John Cassidy – “… Dalio believes that some heavily indebted countries, including the United States, will eventually opt for printing money as a way to deal with their debts, which will lead to a collapse in their currency and in their bond markets. ‘There hasn’t been a case in history where they haven’t eventually printed money and devalued their currency,’ he said. Other developed countries, particularly those tied to the euro and thus to the European Central Bank, don’t have the option of printing money and are destined to undergo ‘classic depressions,’ Dalio said. The recent deal to avoid an immediate debt default by Greece didn’t alter his pessimistic view. ‘People concentrate on the particular thing of the moment, and they forget the larger underlying forces,’ he said. ‘That’s what got us into the debt crisis. It’s just today, today.’

Dalio’s assessment sounded alarmingly plausible. But when one plays the global financial markets a thorough economic analysis is only the first stage of the game. At least as important is getting the timing right. I asked Dalio when all this would start to come together. ‘I think late 2012 or early 2013 is going to be another very difficult period,’ he said.” Read more.

Gulf of Mexico ‘Dead Zone’ May Triple in Size, Could Become the ‘Largest Ever Recorded’

07/19/2011 Leave a comment

“Researchers measuring the ‘dead zone’ in the Gulf of Mexico say it is currently about 3,300 square miles but some scientists say it could become much larger.

The so-called ‘dead zone,’ caused by nitrogen levels in the gulf related to human activities such as agricultural runoff, occurs when oxygen levels in seawater drop to dangerously low levels, causing severe hypoxia that can potentially result in fish kills and harm marine life.

Researchers from Texas A&M University say the size of the dead zone off coastal Louisiana has been routinely monitored for about 25 years while nitrogen levels in the gulf resulting from human activities have tripled over the past 50 years.

Some researchers predict the dead zone could exceed 9,400 square miles this year, which would make it one of the largest ever recorded.” Read more.
