Nuclear Engineer: The Dangers of Fukushima Are Worse and Longer-Lived Than We Think, Tokyo in Danger
“‘I have said it’s worse than Chernobyl and I’ll stand by that. There was an enormous amount of radiation given out in the first two to three weeks of the event. And add the wind blowing in-land. It could very well have brought the nation of Japan to its knees. I mean, there is so much contamination that luckily wound up in the Pacific Ocean as compared to across the nation of Japan – it could have cut Japan in half. But now the winds have turned, so they are heading to the south toward Tokyo and now my concern and my advice to friends that if there is a severe aftershock and the Unit 4 building collapses, leave. We are well beyond where any science has ever gone at that point and nuclear fuel lying on the ground and getting hot is not a condition that anyone has ever analyzed.’
So cautions Arnie Gundersen, widely-regarded to be the best nuclear analyst covering Japan’s Fukushima disaster. The situation on the ground at the crippled reactors remains precarious and at a minimum it will be years before it can be hoped to be truly contained. In the near term, the reactors remain particularly vulnerable to sizable aftershocks, which still have decent probability of occuring. On top of this is a growing threat of ‘hot particle’ contamination risk to more populated areas as weather patterns shift with the typhoon season and groundwater seepage.” Read more. High levels of radiation found at Japan nuclear plant – “Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) said it sent a robot into the building of reactor 1 Friday and detected up to 4,000 millisieverts per hour at the south-east corner of the building. That means staying in that area for four minutes makes a worker exposed to the maximum annual limit of 250 millisieverts per year though no worker plans to work there, the operator said.” Read more.
Are Mutations Already Beginning to Occur Around Fukushima?
“A nuclear rabbit has sparked online panic in Japan. Amateur footage shows an earless mutant rabbit, and the person who made the video claims it was shot just outside the exclusion zone near Japan’s crippled Fukushima plant. The clip has given rise to fears the radiation threat in the area is far worse than previously thought. The funny bunny has caused an online frenzy, with predictions that babies in Japan may soon be born with mutations.”
10 Reasons Why The ‘Economic Recovery’ Is a Fraud
By Paul Joseph Watson – “Yesterday’s so-called ‘horror’ show for the US economy with the release of new data illustrating how the economic ‘recovery’ has all but ground to a halt was met with feigned astonishment and shock by the establishment media, and yet for the past two years the public has been continually deceived about the true state of the financial system.
All the hot air about an ‘economic recovery’ has served to hide the fact that the United States is slipping back into a double-dip recession, if not a second ‘great depression,’ as market strategist Peter Yastrow told CNBC yesterday.
1) In 2009, when the media claimed the economic ‘recovery’ had begun, oil prices averaged $54 dollars a barrel. In the 24 months since, the cost has doubled. Americans are paying more and more to fill up at the pump with Goldman Sachs predicting that gas will hit $5 dollars a gallon by summer. This figure was already reached in Washington DC two months ago. Far from representing a ‘recovery’ this is in fact another crippling expense that many Americans people simply cannot afford.
2) The housing market has shown no ‘recovery’ whatsoever. The collapse in US house prices ‘is now greater than that suffered during the Great Depression.’ Prices have plunged by 33 per cent since 2007. Home ownership is at its lowest level for 20 years.” Read more.

Employment growth slows sharply in May – “The U.S. economy may be in for a prolonged period of soft growth as employers hired the fewest number of workers in eight months in May and the unemployment rate rose to 9.1 percent. Nonfarm payrolls increased 54,000 last month, the Labor Department said, fewer than the most pessimistic forecast in the Reuters survey and just over a third of what economists had expected.” Read more.
A Nightmare On: Wall Street Baffled by Slowing Economy, Low Yields; ‘We Are on the Verge of a Great, Great Depression’
By: Margo D. Beller – “Wall Street is having a hard time figuring out what to do now that the U.S. economy appears to be sputtering and yields are so low, Peter Yastrow, market strategist for Yastrow Origer, told CNBC.
‘What we’ve got right now is almost near panic going on with money managers and people who are responsible for money,’ he said. ‘They can not find a yield and you just don’t want to be putting your money into commodities or things that are punts that might work out or they might not depending on what happens with the economy.
‘We need to find real yield and real returns on these assets. You see bad data, you see Treasurys rally, you see all bonds and all fixed-income rally and then the people who are betting against the U.S. economy start getting bearish on stocks. That’s a huge mistake.’
Stocks extended losses after the manufacturing fell below expectations in May and the private sector added only 38,000 jobs during the month.
‘Interest rates are amazingly low and that, thanks to Ben Bernanke, is driving everything,’ Yastrow said. ‘We’re on the verge of a great, great depression. The [Federal Reserve] knows it.'” Read more.
Horror for US Economy as Data Falls off Cliff – “The last month has been a horror show for the U.S. economy, with economic data falling off a cliff, according to Mike Riddell, a fund manager at M&G Investments in London. ‘It seems that almost every bit of data about the health of the US economy has disappointed expectations recently,’ said Riddell, in a note sent to CNBC on Wednesday.” Read more.
Japan Nuclear Firm Aims to End Crisis Within Nine Months; Update: ‘Major Delay’ to Containing the Situation
Update May 30, 2011: TEPCO now admits that obstacles are causing major delays in getting the situation under control …
TEPCO believes stabilizing Fukushima reactors by year-end impossible – “Tokyo Electric Power Co. is coming to the view that it will be impossible to stabilize the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant by the end of this year, senior company officials said Sunday, possibly affecting the timing for the government to consider the return of evacuees to their homes near the plant.
The revelation that meltdowns had occurred at the Nos. 1 to 3 reactors at the plant, most likely with breaches to pressure vessels encasing nuclear fuel, has led the officials to believe that ‘there will be a major delay to work’ to contain the situation, one of them said.
The plant operator, known as TEPCO, announced on April 17 its road map for bringing the troubled reactors at the plant into a stably cooled condition called ‘cold shutdown’ in six to nine months.” Read more.
April 17, 2011: In other words, they really have no idea when this will all end. They just HOPE to have a ‘cold shutdown’ achievable by early 2012 while radiation continues to spew for at least another three months (best case scenario) or more. It’s like the nuclear version of the BP oil spill disaster. And this is itself based upon the hope, however, that there will not be another major earthquake in the area, or any other unforeseen obstacles, that would complicate their efforts even further …
By Justin McCurry – “The company at the centre of Japan’s nuclear crisis says it hopes to bring the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant under control in six to nine months, but cannot say when tens of thousands of people forced to evacuate the area will be able to return home.
In the first indication of how long it will take to stabilise the plant, the Tokyo Electric Power Company [Tepco] revealed on Sunday a two-stage process it hopes will end with the safe ‘cold shutdown’ of the stricken reactors.
Tepco’s announcement came as the US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, arrived in Tokyo to pledge Washington’s support for Japan as it recovers from the worst disaster in its postwar history.” Read more.
Typhoon Songda Strengthens, May Hit Fukushima Nuke Plant
By Aaron Sheldrick and Tsuyoshi Inajima – “Typhoon Songda strengthened to a supertyphoon after battering the Philippines and headed for Japan on a track that may pass over the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant by May 30, a U.S. monitoring center said.
Songda’s winds increased to 241 kilometers (150 miles) per hour from 213 kph yesterday, the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center said on its website. The storm’s eye was about 240 kilometers east of Aparri in the Philippines at 8 a.m. today, the center said. Songda was moving northwest at 19 kph and is forecast to turn to the northeast and cross the island of Okinawa by 9 p.m. local time tomorrow before heading for Honshu.
The center’s forecast graphic includes a possible path over Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant, which has been spewing radiation since March 11 when an earthquake and tsunami knocked out cooling systems. Three of six reactor buildings have no roof after explosions blew them off, exposing spent fuel pools and containment chambers that are leaking.” Read more.
Fukushima nuclear plant is not fully prepared to deal with violent storms – “TOKYO: Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant is not fully prepared to deal with violent storms, officials admitted Saturday, as the country braced for Typhoon Songda to hit. The storm system was located about 30 kilometres southwest of Miyako-jima Island, near Taiwan, as of 3:00 pm, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.” Read more.

Fukushima Nuclear Disaster Now Equal to 50 Chernobyls
“… As Dr. Michio Kaku, a world renowned CUNY theoretical physicist pointed out on CNN March 18, 2011, Chernobyl involved one reactor and only 57.6 Tons of the reactor core went into the atmosphere. In dramatic contrast, the Fukushima Daiichi disaster immediately involved six reactors and IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency, a UN Agency) documented 2,800 Tons of highly radioactive old reactor cores.
Simple division tells us there are at least 48.6 Chernobyls in the burning old reactor cores pumping fiery isotopes into the Earth’s atmosphere. It is no stretch to say Fukushima Daiichi’s six reactors and the dry holding pools for old reactor cores are equal to more than 50 Chernobyl disasters.
Further clarification is needed, of course, and it is being worked out now by independent physicists. Note that the lethality of radioactive reactor cores goes up the first 250,000 years they are out of the reactor – not down.
Looking at the current Japanese meltdown as more than 50 Chernobyls is just the start. In addition, the fate of the four nearby reactors at Fukushima Daini is as yet unknown by the outside world. Working at the nearby reactors, only 10 km (6 miles away) is a quick, painful death sentence. They are inside the mandatory evacuation zone.
This much is known. All radioactive exposures are cumulative for each human, animal and plant. What’s more, mutated genetic codes are passed on to offspring forever. This means all Japanese and all Northern Hemisphere inhabitants are suffering internal radioactive contamination from Fukushima Daiichi reactors already.” Read more.

Dam Spills Extra Water Killing Tons of Fish
By CRAIG WELCH – “SEATTLE Grand Coulee Dam managers are spilling so much water to make room for massive late-season snowmelt that they’re unleashing deadly gas bubbles that are killing hundreds of thousands of fish in the Columbia River.
Virtually all of those fish have been farmed steelhead living in net pens owned by Pacific Aquaculture, a fish farm just outside Nespelem in Okanogan County. The company says it may lose $30 million worth in the next few weeks if dam managers don’t find a new way to handle spring runoff.
But wild river life, too, may be at risk, as dissolved nitrogen and other gases in the water rise to levels that can essentially cause aquatic creatures to get the bends.
‘They’re basically sterilizing this entire stretch of river,’ said John Bielka, Pacific Aquaculture manager. ‘That’s going to wipe out not only the fish in our farm, but also the bull trout, the lamprey, the sturgeon and every other wild thing.'” Read more.
Belarus Shoppers Panic as Ruble Collapses; EPC CEO & Chief Global Strategist Says US Dollar May Collapse in Fall 2011
“Panicky shoppers in Belarus are buying up consumer goods and scarce food supplies as fast as they can, after a sharp devaluation of the ruble failed to halt a slide in the national currency’s value.
Weeks of economic crisis have prompted many Belarusians to buy foreign currency – usually U.S. dollars or euros – to protect themselves against the ruble’s plunge. The government announced Tuesday the official exchange rate would be 4,930 rubles for $1 as of Wednesday, compared to the previous rate of 3,155 rubles, but that triggered an immediate shift in the ruble’s unofficial or black-market price, which now stands at about 6,500 rubles per dollar.” Read more.

Fukushima Reactor Had Meltdown 3.5 Hours After Cooling System Collapsed; Staggering Radiation Levels Now Measured in R1 Drywell
By the end of March the IAEA knew that a nuclear meltdown had occurred at Fukushima, yet this information was not released to the public until nearly 7 weeks later…
“A meltdown occurred at one of the reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant three and a half hours after its cooling system started malfunctioning, according to the result of a simulation using ‘severe accident’ analyzing software developed by the Idaho National Laboratory.
Chris Allison, who had actually developed the analysis and simulation software, reported the result to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in late March. It was only May 15 when Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) admitted for the first time that a meltdown had occurred at the No. 1 reactor at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
According to Allison’s report obtained by the Mainichi, the simulation was based on basic data on light-water nuclear reactors at the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant in Mexico that are about the same size as that of the No. 1, 2, and 3 reactors in Fukushima.” Read more.
More Melted Fuel At Japan’s Fukushima Nuclear Plant Uncovered During UN Probe – “In addition, some chunks of the fuel appeared to have entered the inner containment chambers, or drywell, causing some damage. That suggests that the severity of the accident was greater than officials have acknowledged. TEPCO announced similar findings last week about Unit 1. The new revelations indicate that earlier official assessments may have been too optimistic…” Read more.

IRSN: 70,000 More People Must Evacuate Around Fukushima; TEPCO Now Admits Likely Meltdown in Reactors 2 and 3
“Paris – Seventy thousand people living beyond the 20km no-go zone around Fukushima should be evacuated because of radioactivity deposited by the crippled nuclear plant, a watchdog said.
Updating its assessment of the March 11 disaster, France’s Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) highlighted an area northwest of the plant that lies beyond the 20km zone whose inhabitants have already been evacuated.
Radioactivity levels in this area range from several hundred becquerels per square metre to thousands or even several million bequerels per square metre, the IRSN report, issued late on Monday, said.
Around 70 000 people, including 9 500 children aged up to 14, live in the area, ‘the most contaminated territory outside the evacuation zone’, the agency said.” Read more.

‘Terrible Things Are Sure to Happen’: Supreme Court Orders California to Release Up to 46,000 Prison Inmates
By David G. Savage – “WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court ordered California on Monday to release tens of thousands of its prisoners to relieve overcrowding, saying that ‘needless suffering and death’ had resulted from putting too many inmates into facilities that cannot hold them in decent conditions.
It is one of the largest prison release orders in the nation’s history, and it sharply split the high court.
Justices upheld an order from a three-judge panel in California that called for releasing 38,000 to 46,000 prisoners. Since then, the state has transferred about 9,000 state inmates to county jails. As a result, the total prison population is now about 32,000 more than the capacity limit set by the panel.” Read more.
