Texas: Mysterious Mass Death Of Cattle Prompts Federal Investigation
“(CBS News) ELGIN, Texas – A mysterious mass death of a herd of cattle has prompted a federal investigation in Central Texas.
Preliminary test results are blaming the deaths on the grass the cows were eating when they got sick, reports CBS Station KEYE.
The cows dropped dead several weeks ago on an 80-acre ranch owned by Jerry Abel in Elgin, just east of Austin.
Abel says he’s been using the fields for cattle grazing and hay for 15 years. ‘A lot of leaf, it’s good grass, tested high for protein – it should have been perfect,’ he told KEYE correspondent Lisa Leigh Kelly.
The grass is a genetically-modified form of Bermuda known as Tifton 85 which has been growing here for 15 years, feeding Abel’s 18 head of Corriente cattle. Corriente are used for team roping because of their small size and horns.
‘When we opened that gate to that fresh grass, they were all very anxious to get to that,’ said Abel.
Three weeks ago, the cattle had just been turned out to enjoy the fresh grass, when something went terribly wrong.
‘When our trainer first heard the bellowing, he thought our pregnant heifer may be having a calf or something,’ said Abel. ‘But when he got down here, virtually all of the steers and heifers were on the ground. Some were already dead, and the others were already in convulsions.’
Within hours, 15 of the 18 cattle were dead.” Read more.
Florida: At Least 75 Dead Seabirds Found Along Stretch Of Daytona Beach
“When Myrna Moore took her customary walk along the beach Wednesday morning, she was surprised to find more than a dozen dead seabirds in the surf.
‘I’ve never seen that many dead birds at one time, and I’ve lived here 40 years,’ Moore said. She found the birds along the beach in Daytona Beach Shores during a three-mile walk.At least 75 birds have been found dead along the beach since the weekend, said Joanne Magley, a Volusia County spokeswoman, including at least 20 on Wednesday.
The birds are shearwaters, a family of birds generally found offshore over the open ocean, officials said. Several varieties of shearwaters can be seen offshore of Volusia County including sooty, greater and Audubon’s.
About 10 shearwaters were found alive this week and taken to the County’s Mary Keller Seabird Rehabilitation Sanctuary at the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet, said Capt. Tammy Marris, spokeswoman for the Volusia Beach Patrol.
‘They’re coming in extremely exhausted if not dead.’ Science center staff members believe the birds were probably downed by high winds over the ocean this week, Magley said.
They say the phenomenon isn’t that uncommon, with sick, very young and aging birds falling prey to the weather.
Marris said science center staff told her dead seabirds have been found along the coast and not just in Volusia County.” Source – The Daytona Beach News Journal.
Canada: Hundreds Of Dead Fish Found In Red Hill Creek, Ontario
“Hundreds of dead fish have been found in the Red Hill Creek.
The fish – some floating and others stuck in the sludgy weeds on the bottom of the creek bed – were noticed by a nearby resident walking her dog this morning.
‘There’s usually live fish all over,’ said Dianne Stuart, who made the discovery near King Street East. ‘There’ll always be the odd dead thing – and that’s life. But nothing like that.’
Stuart, who lives nearby on Glennie Avenue, said she walks her German Shepherd cross, Molly, in the Red Hill Valley several times a week. They were at the creek Sunday, and didn’t notice any dead fish at that time.
This afternoon, live fish were few and far between, while dead ones littered the water flowing from Queenston Road to King Street East. There were no strange substances visible in the water, and no unusual smells.
It’s still unclear what’s behind the incident. Keep watching thespec.com for updates.” Source – The Spec.
Canada: Large Number Of Dead Fish Found At Buffalo Pound Lake, Saskatchewan
By Carter Haydu, Times-Herald – “Noticeable numbers of fish are dying off at Buffalo Pound Lake.
But while the cause of the die-off is yet to be determined, Canadian Co-operative Wildlife Health Centre (CCWHC) regional director Trent Bollinger told the Times-Herald humans and their pets should not be in danger due to the ongoing situation.
‘It’s not a threat to people,’ he said on Tuesday. ‘This is a fish issue.’
Most heavily impacted seems to be yellow perch, which Bollinger said are washing up along the shoreline of the local lake. This is the second year in a row the local lake has experienced a fish die-off event, and researchers are taking samples, testing, and trying to diagnose the cause.
‘It looks like there’s a couple of different things,’ Bollinger said, adding the likely culprit is a bacterial organism causing Columnaris Disease.
‘This is a bacterial disease that impacts a range of fish species.’
Sampled fish at the lake have lesions, and cultured samples suggest Columnaris is the likely cause of death.

Australia: Mystery Illness Affecting Galahs, Birds Suddenly Unable To Fly
“Following the mystery deaths of a large number of birds last winter, an equally curious affliction seems to be affecting galahs this year, with a number of mature birds suddenly unable to fly and falling about in what appears to be an unco-ordinated and drunken state.
The symptoms do not seem to match any of the usual listed galah sicknesses.
One of these birds was examined by a vet who could not find anything physically wrong, but suggested a couple of days of rest might do the trick.
A second bird that appeared to be in a similar state was also picked up and the pair were kept warm inside a box overnight and released into a large outdoor cage with feed and water available during the daytime.
After about a week the birds seem to have recovered enough to regain their flight skills although still appear somewhat wonky and not quite ready for release.
A number of dead birds were also seen around town, including in parks, about the same time, although grounded ones that aren’t picked up straight away can quickly fall victim to the cold and predators, including the unkind human kind.
Last year’s large number of galah deaths remained a mystery despite autopsies carried out by a vet and further testing at the Macarthur Institute in Sydney. These birds were found dead in spread wing positions under trees in parks, along the riverbank and in the grounds of the TAFE campus.” Source – Warren Advocate.
Nebraska: Hundreds, Perhaps Thousands, Of Dead Carp Found Washed Ashore In Sutherland Reservoir
By Rick Windham – “Hundreds, possibly thousands, of dead carp were washing up on the north shores of Sutherland Reservoir, a caller said.
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said they were aware of the problem and biologists were in the process of collecting dead fish for analysis. Their initial thoughts were that it was not an environmental factor like heat, lack of dissolved oxygen or a chemical spill that caused the problem.
When I got to the reservoir, I noticed that the die-off was very species specific. The vast majority of the fish I saw dead were carp. This intrigued me because carp can usually survive the worst water conditions. The fact that I saw only a few other species, really no more than I would expect, to see on any given day around the reservoir, makes me think the die-off is due to some sort of disease that affects carp.
I’m not a fisheries biologist, but I’m going to guess we will find out that it was something like the three or so koi herpes viruses or a similar ailment that killed these fish. Another common name is ‘carp pox.’
The virus causes the gills of the fish to be unable to extract oxygen from the water. The fish basically suffocates.
It will be a few days before the official findings will be back and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission can make a definitive statement of the cause of this fish kill.” Source – North Platte Bulletin.
Canada: Dead Fish Fill Canal Near Lake Manitoba ‘As Far As The Eye Can See’
CBC News – “Scores of dead fish have surfaced in a canal near Lake Manitoba.
The canal runs several kilometres between Lake St. Francis and Lake Manitoba. The area is near Twin Lakes Beach, which was devastated by flooding in 2011.
As far as the eye can see down the channel are the white bellies of dead fish, mostly carp.
‘I’m told by locals they just started appearing yesterday,’ reporter Sean Kavanagh said.
‘The best explanation I’ve heard from experts so far is the fish got trapped by flooding last year and ran out of oxygen in the shallow cannel.
‘There are perhaps thousands of live fish still in the channel that may face a similar fate. I’ve got calls into provincial officials for more information, but likely this is part of the flood story from last year that just keeps on being told.'” Source – CBC News.
Drought-Related Algae, Oil Spill Blamed For Mysterious Deaths Of 123 Dolphins Off Texas Coast
By Associated Press – “HOUSTON — The deaths of more than 120 dolphins off the Texas coast has prompted a federal agency to declare the event ‘unusual’ and launch an investigation into whether they were related to a drought-related algae bloom or a more widespread mortality event that has plagued the northern Gulf of Mexico for two years.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has called the stranding of 123 dolphins on Texas shores from November through March an ‘unusual mortality event,’ an official federal listing that allows the agency to access additional funds and set up a team of researchers.
All but four of the dolphins that washed up in Texas were dead, and the few that turned up alive died a short time later, said Blair Mase, the southeast marine mammal stranding network coordinator for NOAA Fisheries. What alarmed scientists though, was the age of the bottle-nosed dolphins that washed up — juveniles rather than the very young or elderly that normally would be found — and the fact that Texas had a years-worth of dead dolphins turn up in a five-month period.
The cause, however, may not be known for months, if at all, Mase said.
‘That’s what’s a little frustrating about this. It’s not like you see on TV, on CSI, you don’t get the answers quickly,’ she said. ‘It can take months and sometimes years.'” Read more.
Flashback: Gulf of Mexico: Thousands of Dolphins Dying in Massive Die-Off, Symptoms Consistent With Those Seen in Animals Exposed to Oil – “The dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico are in the midst of a massive die-off. The reasons why remain a complicated and mysterious mix of oil, bacteria and the unknown. Normally an average of 74 dolphins are stranded on the northern shore of the Gulf of Mexico each year, especially during the spring birthing season. But between February 2010 and April 1, 2012, 714 dolphins and other cetaceans have been reported as washed up on the coast from the Louisiana/Texas border through Franklin County, Fla., reported the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Ninety-five percent of the mammals were dead. Since many of the dead dolphins sink, decompose or are eaten by scavengers before washing up, NOAA believes that 714 may represent only a fraction of the actual death count.” Read more.
Japan: Ten Thousand Sardines Found Dead In South Kanagawa
Fukushima Diary – “Following up this article..A few tens of tones sardines washed up on fishing port in Chiba
10 thousand sardines were found dead on the beach in Minami shitaura machi Miura city Kanagawa as well.
Public Interest Incorporated Foundation staff reported it to the city government around at 15:00 6/14/2012.
Probably it’s been a few days since they were washed up.
From the result of simple water quality testing, nothing abnormal was found. Prefectural government is going to investigate more.
Staff talks there is a possibility that the sardines were chased after large predators from offshore, but a farmer near this area talks he hasn’t seen such a thing before.” Source – Fukushima Diary.
Australia: Hundreds Of Birds Found Dead In Melbourne Suburbs
By Georgie Haberfield, Maroondah Leader – “THE Department of Sustainability and Environment has urged people not to feed native birds after hundreds were found dead in the eastern suburbs.
The suspected cause was bacterial bowel infection necrotic enteritis.
DSE biodiversity incident planning officer Kirsty Greengrass said the infection was easily spread.
‘The disease is spread through droppings from sick birds and a single sick bird can easily pass it on to healthy birds congregating at feed sites,’ Ms Greengrass said.
Birds have enough natural food available.
Dead birds should be disposed of by using a plastic bag as a glove, then double bagged and put in the bin.
Birds should not be buried because dogs or cats may dig them up.” Source – Maroondah Leader.
Missouri Mystery: More Than 10,000 Carp Found Dead In Blue Springs Lake
By Mitch Weber, KSHB – “BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – Missouri conservationists are trying to solve a mystery in an area lake.
What started as a couple dozen dead carp turned into more than 10,000 in Blue Springs Lake.
Conservationists took water samples and couldn’t figure out exactly what caused the deaths. Their samples have now gone onto a national lab for further analysis.
Between 500 and 1,000 carp have been killed everyday. Jake Allman, a biologist with the Missouri Conservation, started noticing carp with lesions under their scales the last few weeks.
‘There’s a little bacteria on the fish, but not enough to really have caused this,’ Allman said. ‘This feeding activity where they are brushing up against each other can actually spread whatever is making them sick.’
If Allman had his way, this kill would only continue.
‘Their spawning activity disrupts spawning of other fish. They root around in the shallows and uproot aquatic vegetation which is beneficial to native fish,’ Allman explained.
But it seems the carp are now starting to recover.
Lake officials are now keeping an eye on the E. coli levels in the water.
They had to close a swimming area during Memorial Day Weekend because of a threat of E. Coli from of all the dead fish.” Source – KSHB.
UK: Mystery Surrounds Death Of 5,000 Fish, ‘This Is Catastrophic’
The Sentinel – “THOUSANDS of fish have died after the lake they were in was contaminated.
Residents discovered the dead fish at Madeley Pool yesterday morning and spent the rest of the day trying to oxygenate the water to save other fish which were still alive.
Buckets, paddling pools and even a baby bath were brought in to house the rescued fish.
It is not yet known what caused the death of the others.
The pool has been closed to fishing and upcoming matches will be cancelled.
Ralph Parsons, chairman of Madeley Pool Angling Club, which manages the pool, said: ‘We normally have between 7,000 and 10,000 fish in the pool. At least 5,000 of them must have died.
‘The whole pool looked like a carpet with fish on the surface struggling to breathe.
‘It is a close-knit community and we are a local club so everyone has pulled their finger out to try to do what they can.
‘We have tried to take out as many alive fish as we can, but there is only so long they will last in paddling pools.
‘They have been dying by the minute but we can’t take them anywhere in case they contaminate other fish.’
Representatives from the Environmental Agency and Newcastle Borough Council were contacted.
Tests are being carried out to determine the cause, but the results have not yet come back…
‘Loads of us went out to try to catch the ones which were still alive. Even little kids were out with their fishing nets. We put them into boxes, containers and even paddling pools to try to keep them alive, but they’ll be lucky if they survive. It’s awful.’
Parish councillor Ann Spilsbury said: ‘This is catastrophic. It is a well-stocked pool and a lot of cost, time and effort goes into looking after it.'” Read more.
