Lakeside NY Town Hauls Away Thousands of Dead Fish
“MORIAH, N.Y. — Crews are cleaning up the thousands of dead fish that have washed up along Lake Champlain’s New York shoreline, including a stretch where public campgrounds and beaches are being prepared for opening this spring.
Lakeside residents in Vermont began reporting thousands of dead alewives showing up along the shore earlier this month. Vermont fisheries biologists say alewives, a species not native to the lake, are sensitive to frigid temperatures and likely died off during the winter.” Read more.

Recently more than a dozen dead sharks were found on the north ends of Longboat Key and Anna Maria Island.
‘There were no real indicators of what went wrong with them,’ Dr. Nick Whitney, Staff Scientist for the Center for Shark Research at MOTE Marine Laboratory said. ‘There are no obvious signs of damage from fishing or net damage or anything like that.’

Dolphin Death Toll Rises in Southern California, Experts Look for Answers
“In the past three days, five more common dolphins have washed up on Southern California beaches, dead or dying, bringing the total death toll to 16 dolphins and one Dall’s porpoise since April 1.
‘The dolphins that are washing up on the beaches are a window to what’s going on in the ocean’s environment,’ said Joe Cordaro, a National Marine Fisheries wildlife biologist. ‘Undoubtedly more animals are dying at sea. It’s just impossible to say how many.’
Most have washed ashore from Malibu to Newport Beach, including recent strandings at Rat Beach, Manhattan Beach and here in Hermosa Beach.” Read more.
Gulf Oil Disaster Still Puzzles Scientists
By John D. Sutter, CNN – “One year after the chocolaty crude started spewing out of the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, leading to the largest accidental oil spill in history, scientists say they’re still trying to piece together what’s happening to the environment.
Some potential clues about the impact of the spill have made themselves known: dead baby dolphins and sea turtles; oiled brown pelicans; fish with strange sores; sticky marsh grasses; tar balls on beaches.
But the big picture hasn’t come into focus yet.
Did the oil spill shatter the Gulf’s food chain? Will fish have trouble reproducing because of exposure to hydrocarbons? What did those dispersants, which were supposed to break up the oil, do to the ecosystem on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico? Or did the Earth already heal itself?” Read more.
‘Thousands and Thousands’ of Dead Fish Found Near Big Warrambool Dam in Australia
“A phone call to the Ridge News on Tuesday morning alerted us to the amount of European Carp fish in a dam at Big Warrambool.
There are thousands and thousands of dead fish on the water and line the banks metres deep.
It is a mystery why they have all died, but a Lightning Ridge local fisherman suggests there is not enough oxygen in the water for the amount of fish.
There is still an amazing amount of fish with their mouths out of the water, they will probably also die.
These fish must have been washed down in flood water and have been left behind in the dam as the waters have dried up.” Read more.
Spate of Greenland Whale Deaths a Worrying Puzzle
“A large number of dead whales have been found around Greenland and authorities are scratching their heads as to why. Now it has come to light that such a spate of sudden deaths may not be unprecedented.
KNR reported at the end of March that hunters from Attu had found eight dead great whales. Now the Department for Hunting and Fishing says it has happened several times in the past.
Hunters and fishermen have also reported finding a dead humpback by Eqalungaarsuit in southern Greenland and a dead sperm whale at the Itilleq, south of Sisimiut.
Biologists and hunters have been unable to explain the causes of death. The Department for Hunting and Fishing and the Greenland Natural History Institute are trying to gather more information about the whales and have set up several scenarios for what might have happened.” Read more.

Gasoline Spill Likely Killed Thousands of Goldstream River Salmon
By Kim Westad – “Thousands of salmon are expected to have been killed by a large gasoline spill that poured into Goldstream River during the weekend.
A Columbia Fuels truck smashed into the rock face and rolled, damaging the cab and one of the two tanks the engine was pulling.
About 40,000 litres of gasoline are estimated to have been spilled and much of that flowed into the river at the side of the highway. The truck hit the rock wall beside a small waterfall that flows across the road to the river, and that helped move the gas.” Read more.
