5 Million Aquatic Animals Die at Mara River in Kenya
“The National Environmental Management Authority (Nema), Public Health Ministry and Kenya Wildlife Service are investigating the deaths of fish in Mara River. Conservationists suspect the deaths that started last week might have been caused by agro chemicals from farms, that drain into the river. Hoteliers in Masai Mara Game Reserve are now expressing fear that the chemicals might kill animals that depend on the river.
‘The deaths could have been caused by agro chemicals from large scale farms on the upper side of the river. The chemicals might also kill hippos, crocodiles and other animals that drink water from the river,’ said Ben Kipeno, a conservationist from the northern side of the reserve. Mr Kipeno said on Wednesday there were unconfirmed reports that apart from fish, a crocodile and a hippo have already succumbed to effects of the chemicals.” Read more.
Dozens of Dead Zebra Finches Found in Gramercy Park in Manhattan
“There is a mystery over dead birds found in and around a private park in Manhattan.
In Gramercy Park, you expect to see pigeons, not zebra finches, and never like the ones Eyewitness News saw Tuesday afternoon dead.
‘Every time I see a dead bird, I feel terrible,’ said Joanie Watkins, a Gramercy Park resident.
It’s the mystery hanging over this normally quiet enclave; how did these birds, that are native to Australia, end up here?
‘I was really upset Sunday night,’ said Lisa Anastasi, a Gramercy Park resident.
Anastasi is one of many who spotted the birds Sunday, in and around the park, dozens of them that were dead, near death, or completely in a daze.” Read more.
Dozens of Seals Washing Up on Jersey Shore
“Seals are washing up on New Jersey beaches by the dozen, according to reports given to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, N.J.
There have been 26 seal strandings in New Jersey since November, sources say. Fourteen of those strandings happened in February.
While it is not unusual for seals to get stranded this time of year, there are more than usual showing up on Jersey shore beaches, according to a spokeswoman for the Brigantine center.
The gray and harbor seals found on the beaches are malnourished and have parasites, authorities say. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center is housing 11 seals right now — making the center two-thirds full.” Read more.

Dead Swans in Grand Canal in Dublin, Ireland
“We are getting reports of a number of dead swans in the GC in Dublin. They are concentrated on the 7th level from Portobello to Suir Road Bridge.
A number were taken from the water for analysis last week. A number of sick birds were also found and were taken to the DSPCA depot for treatment.
Another half dozen birds have been found dead this AM.
Initial reports suggest that the problem is NOT Avian Flu but is more likely some form of botulism or other bacterial infection. The source is as yet unknown but a number of dead and rotting sea-fish were found in the area and that is one possible source. Swans are known to be susceptible to this infection and similar cases have been reported from other areas in the past.
There were also suggestions that the dredging programme may have disturbed some bacteria in the sediment but this is seen as unlikely given the infected birds are some distance from the dredging site.” Source.
Spate of Derwent Fish Deaths in Tasmania
“EXPERTS have no answers on what has caused the death of thousands of squid in the River Derwent this week.
Dead and dying arrowhead squid have been washed ashore or spotted floating on the water at Austins Ferry and Berriedale since Tuesday.
Locals say they have never seen so many dead fish.
The Environment Protection Authority yesterday confirmed reports of more dead squid further down the river.
It is the third case of mass fish deaths in the Derwent in the space of two weeks.
Early this week a large mass of dead juvenile barracouta was found in Windermere Bay near Claremont Primary School.

2,000 Turkeys Diagnosed with Bird Flu Near Jenin

The Palestinian Authority Agriculture Ministry said that a flock of 2,000 turkeys was diagnosed with the virus but that its veterinary department had managed to prevent an epidemic, according to the report.
The PA’s veterinary unit destroyed the entire flock of turkeys and sterilized the farm before final results confirming the presence of the virus were even returned from a lab in Israel, Ma’an reported.” Source.
California Sea Otters Mysteriously Disappearing
“California sea otters capture people’s hearts. Kids line up and squeal in excitement when spotting them.
Recently, the otters have begun losing ground in their struggle to survive, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone. Many are mysteriously falling victim to a ruthless killer: The great white shark.
‘This year was an alarming number of white shark attacks that we identified,’ says Dr. Michael Murray, a Monterey Bay Aquarium veterinarian. ‘I think the jury’s still out on, ‘a’ what it means and ‘b’ why it happens.’
It’s puzzling because the sharks don’t eat the otters, but one bite is enough to kill the furry creatures. It’s one reason for a worrying decline in the number of California sea otters.
The latest count of this threatened species shows their population dropped to just 2,711, a decline of 3.6 percent. The number of sea otter pups, which represent the future of the species, is down 11 percent.
Dr. Melissa Miller, of the Calif. Dept. of Fish and Game, points to a female that died right around the time that she was going to give birth.
When otters die they often end up in Miller’s lab, which is a kind of crime scene investigation unit for otter deaths. Sharks are not the only problem.
‘We know something’s happening where otters that are prime-aged animals are dying of heart failure,’ Miller said.” Read more.
