‘Epidemic’: Washington State Health Officials Now Seeking Help From CDC As Cases Of Whooping Cough Soars
Here’s an update on this story reported last week …
By Associated Press – “SEATTLE — Washington state’s worst outbreak of whooping cough in decades has prompted health officials to declare an epidemic, seek help from federal experts and urge residents to get vaccinated amid worry that cases of the highly contagious disease could spike much higher.
It’s the first state to declare a whooping cough, or pertussis, epidemic since 2010, when California had more than 9,000 cases, including 10 deaths. Washington has had 10 times the cases reported in 2011, and so has Wisconsin with nearly 2,000 cases this year, though that state has not declared an epidemic.
California responded to its crisis two years ago with a public information campaign, readily available vaccines and a new law requiring a booster shot for middle- and high-school students. Doctors were urged to spot whooping cough early, send infected babies to the hospital and promptly treat those diagnosed. In 2011, the number of cases there dropped significantly.
In Washington, about 1,280 cases have been reported in 2012, and officials believe the state could see as many as 3,000 cases by year’s end. Health Secretary Mary Selecky declared the epidemic April 3, and since then officials have bought up the vaccine and made it available for free for people who don’t have insurance.
State officials have asked hospitals to vaccinate every adult who goes home with a new baby, and urged businesses to encourage their employees to get the adult booster shot. Washington already requires a booster shot for middle- and high-school students.” Read more.
Savage Termites Are The Latest Species To Plague Florida Joining Pythons, Giant Rats, Crocodiles And Poisonous Caterpillars
By Christine Show and Daily Mail Reporter – “Dangerous wood-eating termites that can destroy trees and damage homes are the latest infestation to turn up in Florida.
The Nasutitermes corniger termite are native to the Caribbean but have now joined the 20 or so other species of termites which live in the Sunshine State.
The pesky insects are the latest unusual species found in Southern Florida along with African rats, Burmese pythons, and poisonous caterpillars.
The arrival of the termite poses a particular problem because they feast on hardwood, foraging on trees, garden furniture and attack the outside wall of homes.
The termites differ from Florida’s other species because they are found above ground and can fly – making it easier for them to establish new nests.
They build tunnels running up the outside of houses and trees where they create beach ball sized nests weighing up to 28 kilograms.
And a single nest could hold more than a million termites, Rudolf H. Scheffrahn, professor of entomology at the University of Florida, told the Sun Sentinel.
‘They love to eat hardwoods. They ate the handles off garden implements, rakes and hoes — turned them into shredded wheat. If this thing really keeps going, it’s going to be a problem for tropical Florida, from West Palm Beach to the Keys,’ warned Scheffrahn.
He worries that the new species could increase the amount of termites in the Dania Beach region by as much as 30 per cent.
But agricultural officials are determined to stamp out the plague of termites before they spread any further.” Read more.
World Health Organization ‘Concerned’ Over Deadly Vietnam Mystery Disease
AFP – “The World Health Organisation said Monday it was ‘concerned’ about an outbreak of a mysterious skin disease in central Vietnam which has killed 19 people, mostly children.
More than 170 people have fallen ill with the unidentified illness, which causes stiffness in the limbs and ulcers on victims’ hands and feet that look like severe burns.
‘We are concerned about this. WHO is very aware of this case,’ said Wu Guogao, the organisation’s chief officer in Hanoi, adding Vietnam had not asked for help with an investigation into the outbreak.
The WHO has not been given access to any official reports on the issue.
‘It is difficult to say the exact cause at this stage,’ he told AFP.
The disease appears to have been concentrated mainly in Ba To district in central Quang Ngai province and the WHO said it had not heard of similar outbreaks elsewhere in the country.
Local doctors said they were waiting for the results of a recent Ministry of Health probe.
‘The results of the investigation (are) not yet available. Therefore, we don’t know anything more concerning the disease,’ said doctor Dang Thi Phuong, director of Ba To district healthcare centre.
‘As far as I know, the Ministry intends to invite foreign experts to the area to help us know more,’ she told AFP, adding that many of the victims were under 10 years old.
Media reports said about one in 10 of those infected had developed serious liver disorders, but said the infection does not appear to be highly contagious.” Source – Tuoitrenews.vn.
Scientists: Drug-Defying Germs From India Are ‘Spreading Faster, Further And In More Alarming Ways Than Any They’ve Encountered’
By Jason Gale and Adi Narayan, Bloomberg – “Lill-Karin Skaret, a 67-year-old grandmother from Namsos, Norway, was traveling to a lakeside vacation villa near India’s port city of Kochi in March 2010 when her car collided with a truck. She was rushed to the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, her right leg broken and her artificial hip so damaged that replacing it required 12 hours of surgery.
Three weeks later and walking with the aid of crutches, Skaret was relieved to be home. Then her doctor gave her upsetting news. Mutant germs that most antibiotics can’t kill had entered her bladder, probably from a contaminated hospital catheter in India. She risked a life-threatening infection if the bacteria invaded her bloodstream — a waiting game over which she had limited control, Bloomberg Markets magazine reports in its June issue.
‘I got a call from my doctor who told me they found this bug in me and I had to take precautions,’ Skaret remembers. ‘I was very afraid.’
Skaret was lucky. Eventually, her body rid itself of the bacteria, and she escaped harm from a new type of superbug that scientists warn is spreading faster, further and in more alarming ways than any they’ve encountered. Researchers say the epicenter is India, where drugs created to fight disease have taken a perverse turn by making many ailments harder to treat.
India’s $12.4 billion pharmaceutical industry manufactures almost a third of the world’s antibiotics, and people use them so liberally that relatively benign and beneficial bacteria are becoming drug immune in a pool of resistance that thwarts even high-powered antibiotics, the so-called remedies of last resort.” Read more.
Pertussis: Worst Whooping Cough Outbreak In Nearly 70 Years Strikes Washington State
MNN – “More than 1,100 cases of whooping cough have already been diagnosed this year in the state, nearly doubling the number seen in typical peak years.
Washington state is gearing up for one of the worst epidemics of pertussis in nearly 70 years. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes a nasty cough. It is particularly dangerous for young infants.
Public health officials have confirmed more than 1,100 cases of whooping cough so far this year in the state. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported this year, but 20 infants have been hospitalized with the illness.
Washington’s Gov. Christine Gregoire announced May 3 that state emergency funds would be available to provide free vaccinations and help spread awareness about the disease and the importance of getting vaccinated.
In the U.S., most kids receive a series of vaccines against whooping cough at the age of 2 months. But some kids don’t get immunized, either because their parents object or they are unaware of the importance of vaccines.
Outbreaks of pertussis are not uncommon, but they do tend to run in cycles. Tim Church, a spokesman for the Washington state Health Department, said the current epidemic is running well above typical peak years in the past, when 500 to 600 cases might be reported in a year.” Source – MNN.
Canada: Whooping cough outbreak sparks vaccination campaign – “The province of New Brunswick will vaccinate nearly 12,000 students in Saint John and Moncton following an outbreak of pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. Typically, there are 40 cases of whooping cough in the province each year. But this year, 370 cases have been reported so far, said Dr. Eilish Cleary, chief medical officer of health.” Read more.
Thailand: ‘Hundreds and Possibly Thousands’ of Mysterious Open-Billed Stork Deaths Spark Bird Flu Fears In Ang Thong
Bangkok Post – “Hundreds and possibly thousands of open-billed storks have died mysteriously in Ang Thong, triggering fear of a new outbreak of bird flu.
The birds were found dead in open ground behind a deserted factory by the side of the Chamlong-Nong Jik road in tambon Chamlong in Sawangha district after residents noticed that the animals looked drowsy and lay around on the ground, causing a bad stench in the air, the kamnan of Chamlong, Suebsak Waewkaew, said.
Residents alerted authorities who inspect the site twice and then went away, Mr Suebsak said.
He demanded the authorities collect samples of the birds’ remains and move quickly to identify the cause of the mass deaths as residents living nearby were worried that bird flu might be involved.
Suthee Srisuwan, head of the provincial natural resources and environment office, said he had instructed experts to launch an investigation into the incident. An initial inspection had found huge numbers of dead birds in two locations. He would not elaborate further other than to say an investigation is underway.” Source – Bangkok Post.
‘Systematic, Ongoing and Egregious’: Why is Christian Persecution in Saudi Arabia Ignored?
By John Meinhold – “As I write, many Christians are observing Good Friday. Easter is the holiest season of the Christian faith. With CNN broadcasting the latest insignificant news about Kim Kardashian in the background, I happened to recently stumble on an obscure government document on the Internet from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). It turns out what I read in the USCIRF 2012 Annual Report was one of the most important documents I have read in many years.
USCIRF is tasked with reporting to the president, Secretary of State and Congress on international human rights abuses of religious freedom. Their recommendations are either acted upon or the country is given a waiver.
Why was I doing research on the Internet?
The Grand Mufti Sheik Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah of Saudi Arabia had recently been reported to say it is ‘necessary to destroy all the churches in the (Arabian Peninsula) region.’ Pretty shocking news since the Arabian Peninsula encompasses Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Yemen. Furthermore, the grand mufti is the highest religious authority in Saudi Arabia and has world influence on Muslims. Yet, an Internet news search showed only the Washington Times and Houston Chronicle posted an editorial condemning his barbaric words. More disappointing is that only Reuters had a news story about archbishops from Russia, Austria and Germany decrying what the Saudi grand mufti said.
The Catholic Bishops Conference in Austria said the grand mufti’s fatwa was ‘incomprehensible‘ and demanded an official explanation from Riyadh. They said his words endangered Christians around the world, not just in Arab states.
According to the USCIRF report ‘systematic, ongoing and egregious violations of religious freedom continue in Saudi Arabia.’ The report says, ‘More than 10 years since the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, the Saudi government has failed to implement a number of promised reforms related to promoting freedom of thought, conscience, and or belief. The Saudi government … prohibits churches, synagogues, temples, and other non-Muslim places of worship, uses in its schools and posts online state textbooks that continue to espouse intolerance and incite violence, and periodically interferes with private religious practice.'” Read more.

Pundits would lambaste the church, the White House would rush out a statement of deep concern, and rioters in the Middle East would kill each other in their grief. But when the most influential leader in the Muslim world issues a fatwa to destroy Christian churches, the silence is deafening.” Read more.
Flashback: Report: Saudis Export Anti-Christian and Anti-Jewish Textbooks that Continue to Fuel Intolerance and Violence Around the Globe – “Textbooks used in Saudi Arabia’s schools contain virulent forms of anti-Christian and anti-Jewish bigotry that continue to fuel intolerance and violence around the globe, says a new report… ‘Because of the Saudis’ great oil wealth, it is able to disseminate its textbooks … to many Muslim schools, mosques and libraries throughout the world. ‘This is not just hate mongering, it’s promoting violence,’ she said in an interview. It is exporting terrorism through textbooks. Christians are referred to as ‘swine’ and Jews as ‘apes,’ while being blamed for much of the world’s ills.” Read more.
Deaths of Millions of Bats in North America Linked to Killer European Fungus
By Margaret Munro – “The death of millions of bats in Canada and the United States has been traced to an ‘invasive’ pathogen from Europe, which may have been carried into North America on someone’s shoes.
An international experiment, run on bats that hibernated in a bio-safety lab in Saskatchewan, has provided the strongest evidence yet that the bat killer is a fungus from Europe.
‘And it’s a reasonable hypothesis that it came in on someone’s shoes,’ says biologist Craig Willis, at the University of Winnipeg, who led the study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
More than 90 per cent of bats have been wiped out in colonies in eastern Canada and the U.S. as a result of white nose syndrome, which is caused by the fungus.
‘It’s very bad news,’ Willis says of the syndrome that was first seen in North America in 2006 in a New York cave popular with tourists. The quickly spreading fungus has decimated colonies in the eastern U.S. as well as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario.” Read more.
Flashback: ‘Startling’: Up to 6.7 Million Bats Now Dead of ‘White-Nose’ Fungus in Canada and the United States – “U.S. scientists are estimating that between 5.7 million and 6.7 million bats in Canada and the United States have succumbed to white-nose syndrome, a fungus spreading in eastern North America. The mortality figures were released Tuesday by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. ‘White-nose syndrome has spread quickly through bat populations in eastern North America, and has caused significant mortality in many colonies,’ said Dr. Jeremy Coleman, co-ordinator of the U.S white-nose syndrome program. ‘Many bats were lost before we were able to establish pre-white-nose syndrome population estimates.’” Read more.
Egypt: At Least 9,000 Livestock Now Dead, 100,000 Infected with Foot-And-Mouth, All of North Africa and the Middle East Now Threatened
By Ben Gittleson – “Al Shawaye Al Malaq, Egypt // Freshly covered graves mask the carcasses of cattle felled by the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak spreading across Egypt, but farmers’ frustration in the Nile Delta over the financial devastation is out in the open.
Al Shawaye Al Malaq is one of the worst hit villages in Egypt, with almost 5,000 livestock dead. Ahmed Ibrahim Ghayes lost all 20 of his calves and one adult cow; his remaining 59 cattle have all been infected.
With most of his cows either dead or unable to produce milk at capacity, Mr Ghayes’s milk output has dropped 80 per cent. The outbreak has frozen the cattle trade, he said, making it difficult for him to pay off loans.
‘No one is buying or selling cattle because everyone’s afraid,’ he said.
Nearly 100,000 animals across Egypt have been infected, of which more than 9,000 have died, said the head of Egypt’s central quarantine service earlier this week.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has warned the outbreak could threaten the whole of North Africa and the Middle East.” Read more.
Alaska: Polar Bears Show Signs of Mysterious Illness
By Annie Feidt – “Biologists have found Polar Bears in the Beaufort Sea with hair loss and skin lesions. Those are the same symptoms that have sickened ice seals and walruses in the arctic since last summer and led the federal government to declare the incident an unusual mortality event. Scientists are just beginning an investigation into whether polar bears are suffering from the same thing.
“The first day we observed it was on March 21st and we had three captures and two of them had Alopecia, which is the skin loss and so it was like, ‘oh that’s interesting.’ Then we started picking it up on other animals in later march so it was like, this is more than normal.”
So far, the field scientists have found hair loss on nine of the 33 bears they’ve captured. The bears have skin lesions on their head, neck and ears. Degange says they have found polar bears with similar symptoms since 1999, but the number of effected bears makes this year unusual:
“The bears appear to be healthy otherwise. We haven’t seen any dead bears, so its not a mortality event as far as we know. But the fact that its occurring at the same time as this unexplained mortality event with seals certainly raises the interest level.”
The biologists collected blood and tissues from the affected bears to try to figure out if the symptoms are related to the mysterious illness that has been found in ice seals and walruses. Dozens of seals have died from the disease, but no walrus deaths are attributed to it. Scientists don’t know yet if the walrus and seals are suffering from the same thing. Although the veterinary pathologist who has done most of the necropsies on the animals say the lesions look very similar under the microscope. Julie Speegle is a spokesperson for the National Marine Fisheries Service. She says its been a difficult case:” Read more.
Egypt: Over 3000 Animals Dead So Far as Foot and Mouth Disease Spreads Throughout Egypt, Cases Reported in the Tens of Thousands
“CAIRO, March 18 (UPI) — Foot and mouth disease has spread throughout Egypt, claiming more than 3,100 animals, government officials said this weekend.
The General Authority for Veterinary Services said the Sat 2 serotype of the livestock disease had turned up in governates nationwide with well over 33,000 cases reported.
The state MENA news agency said the outbreak appeared to be most serious in the Gharbiya and Dakahliya governates.
Egypt last week suspended a vaccination program so that it could be adjusted to be more effective against Sat 2. Farmers were also required to bury dead animals rather than disposing of them in drainage canals.” Source – UPI.
Foot and Mouth Disease creating havoc on Egypt’s livestock industry – “The North African country of Egypt is already suffering through reported food shortages and food inflation and now a severe, rapidly spreading virus is infecting thousands of cows as Egyptian farmers accuse the government of incompetence. A strain of the highly contagious viral disease, Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is spreading through dozens of provinces in Egypt infecting and killing thousands of cows.” Read more.
India: Bird Flu Ruled Out After Mysterious Disease Kills 1500 Chickens in Siwan District
“PATNA: Over 1,500 chickens have died due to a mysterious disease at Thepaha and Jimsikri villages in Siwan district in the past 15 days triggering fear of a possible outbreak of bird flu among the poultry owners.
District animal husbandry officer (DAHO) in-charge Dr Ravindra Kumar said that deaths were reported from two poultry farms at Jamsikri village under Zeeradei block and Thepaha under Siwan Sadar block. Kumar said that a four-member medical team was constituted and it carried out post-mortem examination of the dead chickens. He said that the medical team found no symptoms of bird flu. The chickens had died due to bacterial infection and apparently due to unhygienic conditions in which they were kept and fed by their owners, DAHO said.
Kumar said he had sent separate reports to Siwan DM and director, AHD, Patna, in this connection. The serum of the dead chickens would be first sent to Patna and then to Kolkata for further investigation, he added.” Source – Times of India.
