By Grant Taylor, The West Australian – “A radical Perth preacher has praised militants responsible for beheadings and mass killings in Iraq and labelled Christians and Jews filthy rapists.

In a series of online postings and videos Junaid Thorne, 24, has called on Muslims to defend their religion.

Junaid, who spent much of his youth in Saudi Arabia, sits in front of the black flag of al-Qaida breakaway group ISIS and calls on young Australian Muslims to reject their moderate leaders.

ISIS, also known as ISIL, has been responsible for the murders of unarmed Shi’ite Muslims and has posted grisly pictures of executions online in a bid to attract radicals from around the world.

In an online posting on June 10, Junaid praised ISIS militants and congratulates them on the capture of the city of Mosul and the liberation of militant prisoners.

‘May Allah reward them for such a heroic and glorious act,’ he wrote. ‘Congratulations (on) this victory and liberation.’

ISIS is listed as a terror organisation by the Federal Government, meaning anyone who recruits, trains, directs or provides support or funds for the group faces up to 25 years jail…

Junaid was detained and questioned and deported to Australia last year and has since gained a cult following among some young Muslims.

He has held lectures in Perth and the Eastern States.

Edited videos of the lectures show Junaid referring to jailed terrorists as defenders of Islam and telling followers they have a duty to defend their faith.

‘Look at the prisons around the world and what do you see? People who stand up for Islam,’ Junaid says. ‘What have you done for this religion?’

‘You knew what was happening in this world, yet you chose to sit at home and do nothing.'” Read more.

Apparently the local Muslim community in Scotland wishes to distance itself from this prayer-leader-turned-commando. If the teachings of Islam are any indication, however, they’re either being deceitful (“Allah’s Prophet said, ‘War is deceit’” – Bukhari 4.268) or they’re inferior, low-grade Muslims (“Not equal are those believers who sit at home and receive no hurt … Allah hath granted a grade higher to those who strive and fight with their goods and persons than to those who sit at home” – Qur’an Sura 4:95). But like the Islamic world as a whole, the Muslim community in Scotland is living in the “last daze” who, in lieu of claiming to distance itself from “a well-integrated member of society” who “never ever” showed any radical tendencies, ought to be distancing itself from the “prophet” that inspired him instead …

By James Matthews, Sky News – “A third jihadist featured in a recruitment video released by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has been identified as a prayer caller at a city mosque in Aberdeen.

Abdul Rakib Amin settled in the northeast of Scotland with his family after travelling from Bangladesh.

As a teenager he attended the Aberdeen Mosque and Islamic Centre, where he volunteered as a ‘mu’adhdhin’, someone who calls worshippers to prayer.

Sources at the mosque have told Sky News that Amin ‘never, ever’ showed radical tendencies.

They say that if he had he would have been immediately reported to the police, with whom the mosque has a close relationship.

As a youngster, Amin also attended St Machar Academy in Aberdeen and friends in the city describe him as a well-integrated member of society who was a keen footballer player.

Having grown up in the Froghall area of Aberdeen, he and his family moved to Leicester several years ago.

In the video posted on Youtube, Amin appears alongside two Cardiff students – Reyaad Khan and Nasser Muthana, both aged 20 – urging Westerners to join the fighting in Iraq and Syria.

ISIS has seized several cities and towns across northern and western Iraq in recent weeks in a lightning offensive which has put the Iraqi government on the back foot.

A member of Aberdeen’s Muslim community who knew Amin told Sky News: ‘He was more of a lad than a regular attendee at the mosque.

‘He was a happy guy, played football – he was a good player and he supported Aberdeen.

‘I remember him as a hyper person, energetic and loud… not the type of person you’d expect to go and do this.’

He said that the community wanted to distance themselves from Amin’s actions in Syria.

‘We don’t want our community tainted because some idiot’s gone commando.'” Read more.

Over the last month, the world’s media has been awash with gruesome images of barbarism – pulled into sharp focus in recent days with the barrage of horrific videos and hate-filled messages pouring onto the internet from Sunni militants in Iraq.

But it is far from restricted to that country alone. In just the last few days:

• Footage has emerged showing armed militant children as young as eight watching as an Iraqi prisoner is executed by ISIS, while another shows a captured Iraqi police officer being beheaded;
• At least five people have died in an attack on Kenya’s coast just days after Al Qaeda-inspired terror group Al Shabaab kills 60 in twin massacres;
• Islamist militants Boko Haram are feared to have snatched 90 villagers in the same area of Nigeria where they seized nearly 300 Christian schoolgirls two months ago;
• A human rights group has warned that revenge attacks between Christian and Islamic militia in the Central African Republic risk creating conditions for a genocide reminiscent of Bosnia in the 1990s.
• Just last night, an explosion in a Nigerian shopping mall killed at least 21 people and injured 17 more as the nation prepared to watch its football team play Argentina in the World Cup
• Also yesterday, a suicide bomber killed himself and wounded several security officers at a hotel in Raouche in Beirut, close to the Saudi Arabian embassy

Another form of religious extremism has also gained widespread attention and subsequent outrage in Sudan, where a mother was handed the death sentence for marrying a Christian and was forced to give birth in shackles in prison.

Mariam Yehya Ibrahim was released after an international outcry, but yesterday was re-arrested and charged with fraud as she tried to leave the country with her American husband, Daniel Wani, and their two children.” Read more.

As the militant group the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, has seized vast territories in western and northern Iraq, there have been frequent accounts of fighters’ capturing groups of people and releasing the Sunnis while the Shiites are singled out for execution.

ISIS believes that the Shiites are apostates and must die in order to forge a pure form of Islam. The two main branches of Islam diverge in their beliefs over who is the true inheritor of the mantle of the Prophet Muhammad. The Shiites believe that Islam was transmitted through the household of the Prophet Muhammad. Sunnis believe that it comes down through followers of the Prophet Muhammad who, they say, are his chosen people.

Though many ISIS fighters are well educated — its own leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, holds a PhD in Islamic studies from the University of Baghdad — I’m doubtful that many, if any, within ISIS have had any formal training to operate military aircraft. Then again, we don’t know what experience the surging number of foreign ISIS fighters — some holding Western passports — are bringing to the table, not to mention any number of defectors from the Syrian military who may have joined the ranks of their former enemy. All it takes is just one experienced pilot to wreak even more havoc than we’ve already seen …

By Eli Lake and Josh Rogin, The Daily Beast – “In its march to Baghdad, ISIS seized the heavy weapons of a modern army. Now, the jihadists are attacking Iraq’s biggest air base – and could soon be able to attack from the sky.

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham is threatening to take control of Balad Airbase, Iraq’s largest airfield and one of America’s most important military outposts during its occupation of the country.

Today, Balad still has plenty of vehicles and aircraft on the base that any terrorist group would covet, including Russian-made transport helicopters, surveillance planes, and a fleet of pickup trucks fitted with heavy machine guns.

Now, that airbase is coming under fire — and is in danger of falling into the hands of ISIS, according to U.S. intelligence officers, internal reports from Balad, and outside analysts. Reuters reported Wednesday that the base was now surrounded on three sides by insurgents and taking heavy mortar fire.

‘We assess the group continues to threaten the air base and Iraqi Security Force control of the air base as it moves south towards Baghdad,’ a senior U.S. intelligence official told reporters Tuesday.

Of course, even if ISIS were to gain control of Balad, there is no guarantee its fighters would know how to operate or maintain the aircraft that are stored there. But an ISIS takeover of Balad would be significant nonetheless. As NBC News reported Tuesday, Iraqi officers say without air support they are on an equal footing with ISIS fighters.

Jessica Lewis — the research director for the Institute for the Study of War and a former U.S. Army intelligence officer who served in Iraq — told The Daily Beast, ‘It would mean that ISIS can beat the best that the Iraqi Army can muster, not just the northern units that have been ignored. It would mean strategic defeat for the Iraqi Army.’

Lewis estimates that Balad and neighboring Taji base are likely some of the next targets of the ISIS campaign. ‘Both of these bases are critical military sites for the Iraqi Army. Neutralizing one or both would demonstrate that ISIS can beat the Iraqi Army strategically.'” Read more.

Running For Their Lives From The “Religion Of Peace”

This Day Live – “United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has lamented that about 650,000 Nigerians have been displaced in many parts of the North as a result of the activities of the Boko Haram sect.

Representative of the body in Nigeria, Ms. Angele Dikongue-Atangana, said in an interview yesterday that an intelligence assessment carried out in May had blamed their displacement on the recent crises in the North-east region.

‘According to an intelligence assessment of North-eastern Nigeria, at least 650,000 persons have been displaced within the boundary of Nigeria. And what is of most concern to the UNHCR in Nigeria today are these internally displaced persons.’

She said her organisation was working hard to establish a regional office in Gombe that would take care of many of the internally displaced persons, adding that the international community and the UN systems in Nigeria are working jointly to provid protection and care for the affected persons.

The representative also disclosed plans by UNHCR to ensure efficient coordination and management of camps for those affected.

‘UNHCR will always support respective states in taking care of internally displaced persons.

‘This is one reason we want to establish an office in Gombe, to be able to cater for the needs of many displaced persons in this part of Nigeria,’ Dikongue-Atangana.” Source – This Day Live.
