Again: Syria’s Christians Threatened To ‘Convert, Submit To Islam Or Face The Sword’

By Lela Gilbert, FOX News – “‘Convert. Submit to Islam. Or face the sword.’ In recent days, the besieged Christian community in Raqqa – a city in northern Syria – has faced those three stark alternatives.

The terrorist group known as ISIS – the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – made their demands after seizing control of the region. They required the local Christians to renounce their faith and embrace Islam, assent to extreme subjugation, or face death.

On February 27, ISIS published a statement that an agreement had been signed by 20 of Raqqa’s Christian leaders.

Faced with losing their lives or denying their Christian faith, the community opted for dhimmi status – suppression as a ‘protected’ minority – which requires them to submit to an array of demands, including the notorious jizya tax, which can be compared to Mafiosi protection money: purchasing their safety, but under strictly enforced regulations.

Raqqa’s Christians are now subject to an extreme version of Islamic Shariah law, which among other things forbids them to repair their war-torn churches, worship or pray in public, ring church bells, or wear crosses or other symbols of their faith. Bearing arms is, of course, forbidden, as are alcoholic beverages.

Even before the agreement was signed, on February 22 Lebanon’s Daily Star reported, ‘ISIS has imposed a strict form of Islam in Raqqa, enforcing the veil and banning cigarettes. They have doled out harsh punishments under Shariah courts for religious crimes, including beatings and executions. In Al-Bab, Aleppo, pictures showing ISIS fighters burning tons of cigarettes were recently published.’

The Christians of Raqqa chose ‘to sign the dhimma treaty over war,’ the ISIS statement explained, and in return received a commitment by local ISIS commander Ibrahim Al-Badri – also known as Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi – that they would not be subjected to physical harm or religious targeting once the treaty was approved.

ISIS made the case for signing the treaty clear: ‘If they reject, they are subject to being legitimate targets, and nothing will remain between them and ISIS other than the sword.'” Read more.

By Richard Kerbaj and Sian Griffiths, The Sunday Times – “An apparent plot by Muslim fundamentalists to destabilise and take over state schools in England is being investigated by council officials and monitored by police.

Birmingham city council began an inquiry after the circulation of what purport to be strategy documents outlining ways of ousting head teachers in Muslim areas of the city in order to establish schools run on Islamic principles.

The anonymous documents were passed by the council to West Midlands police. The paperwork, which appears to have been written by disaffected Muslims, has been leaked to The Sunday Times. It is not known whether the council’s investigation, which was opened in November, has established the authorship of the documents.

The revelation comes as a further setback for the government’s academies and free schools programme, where institutions are freed from council control and run as semi-independent bodies by a sponsor or trust.

The documents highlight a five-step strategy, allegedly written by unnamed Salafists — fundamentalist Muslims — to remove unwanted head teachers. The schools targeted include failing institutions that could be turned into academies.

The Sunday Times revealed last week that Park View Academy in Birmingham is being investigated by the Department for Education for allegedly sidelining non-Muslim staff and trying to teach Islamic studies, despite not being a faith-based state school.” Read more.

China: Dozens Stabbed To Death After Knife-Wielding Muslims Attack Train Station

By Didi Tang, AP – “Authorities blamed a slashing rampage that killed 29 people and wounded 143 at a train station in southern China on separatists from the country’s far west and vowed a harsh crackdown Sunday, while residents wondered why their laid-back city was targeted.

Police fatally shot four of the assailants — putting the overall death toll at 33 — and captured another after the attack late Saturday in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, the official Xinhua News Agency said. But authorities were searching for at least five more of the black-clad attackers.

State broadcaster CCTV said two of the assailants were women, including one of the slain and the one detained.

‘All-out efforts should be made to treat the injured people, severely punish terrorists according to the law, and prevent the occurrence of similar cases,’ said China’s top police official, Politburo member Meng Jianzhu, who arrived in Kunming early Sunday, an indication of how seriously authorities viewed the attack.

The attackers’ identities have not been confirmed, but evidence at the scene showed that it was ‘a terrorist attack carried out by Xinjiang separatist forces,’ Xinhua said. The far western region of Xinjiang is home to a simmering rebellion against Chinese rule by some members of the Muslim Uighur (pronounced WEE’-gur) population, and the government has responded there with heavy-handed security.

Police in Kunming on Sunday were rounding up members of the city’s small Uighur community, believed to number no more than several dozen, for questioning in the attack and information about the assailants.” Read more.

Iran: We Are Prepared For A Decisive War Against America And Israel, We Have Been ‘Making Plans’

MEMRI – “On February 11, 2014, Iran celebrated Revolution Day, the 35th anniversary of the regime of the Islamic Revolution, against the backdrop of the start of permanent agreement nuclear talks between Iran and the superpowers, and of the ongoing struggle within Iran between the ideological stream led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, and the pragmatic stream led by Hashemi Rafsanjani, on the issue of how Iran should deal with the U.S. Revolution Day 2014 was marked by regime officials’ harsh anti-U.S. statements and by calls for maintaining Iranian hostility towards the U.S.

In two separate speeches, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stressed that the main enemy of the revolution was the U.S. and extolled fighting it as the revolution’s central value. He added that the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran was ‘an even greater revolution than the first one,’ that is, greater than the removal of the Shah and the seizure of power by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. Khamenei also called on Iranians not to be taken in by the U.S.’s overtures, and not to trust it, because its aim – that is, to topple the revolutionary regime – remains unchanged.

As part of the Iranian regime’s dismissal of the U.S. military threat, many of this year’s Revolution Day marches and demonstrations featured signs bearing the slogan in English, ‘We Are Eager For The Options On The Table,’ – a slogan praised by both Khamenei’s and Rafsanjani’s circles. Moreover, Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) naval commander Ali Fadavi stated that the U.S. would understand Iran’s might when Iran began to sink U.S. warships, with their crews of over 5,000. At the same time, Iranian Navy Adm. Rezai Haddad announced that an Iranian flotilla was en route to the Atlantic for ‘a first approach of U.S. maritime borders’[1] and that this was meant to be a ‘message’ for the U.S [2]

In his Revolution Day message, both Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan and Iranian Army chief of staff Hassan Firouzabadi stressed that Iran longs for the decisive battle with the U.S., in light of the latter’s threat to use the military option if the nuclear talks fail. In other speeches, government officials stressed that hostility towards the U.S. – ‘the Great Satan’ – would continue even if the nuclear issue were resolved, and that Iran’s smiles at the negotiating table were merely a tactical move aimed at obtaining Iran’s nuclear rights.

Iranian Military Officials: ‘The Americans Will Know [Iran’s True Power] When Their Warships, With Over 5,000 Aboard, Sink During A Confrontation With Iran’; We Are Prepared With Ballistic Missiles, Swift Boats, And Mines; ‘The Iranian Nation Will Hand Them [The Americans] A Crushing Defeat’

In a February 11, 2014 interview with the Fars news agency, Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said: ‘The Defense Ministry is working to ensure that the Iranian people are armed and ready to confront any enemy threat. Yesterday’s successful test of Iranian-made ballistic missiles was also a crushing response to the nonsense of the American officials who frequently threaten Iran. It is a clear answer to their military option. The Defense Ministry and the Iranian nation are always ready [for battle], and Iran will welcome it if the Americans again put themselves to the test and face the consequences. The Americans will again be defeated, just as they were in the [1980-1988] Iran-Iraq war. If they implement their nonsense [i.e. their threats], the Iranian nation will hand them a crushing defeat.’[3]

The next day, February 12, Iranian Chief of Staff Hassan Firouzabadi told Fars: ‘Iran is prepared for the decisive war against the U.S. and the Zionist regime.’ He added, ‘Iran has been making plans, conducting maneuvers, and preparing its forces for this battle for years now.’[4]

Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) naval commander Ali Fadavi threatened that in battles at sea, his forces would sink American warships: ‘The Americans can spot swift boats, sea mines, and anti-ship missiles but they cannot grasp axioms such as… ‘God, the Islamic Revolution, and the Supreme Leader [Khamenei].’ On the chest of the IRGC is the [Koran] verse that clearly says that the use of measures against the infidels and the enemies must be promoted. The Americans notice only some of our capabilities; only on the battlefield will they fully internalize the bulk of our capabilities. The Americans will know [Iran’s true power] when their warships, with over 5,000 aboard, sink during a confrontation with Iran, and when they have to search the depths of the sea for their bodies.’[5]” Read more.

Why Are Christians The World’s Most Persecuted Group?

By Raymond Ibrahim, FrontPage Mag – “Why are Christians, as a new Pew report documents, the most persecuted religious group in the world?  And why is their persecution occurring primarily throughout the Islamic world?  (In the category on ‘Countries with Very High Government Restrictions on Religion,’ Pew lists 24 countries — 20 of which are Islamic and precisely where the overwhelming majority of ‘the world’s’ Christians are actually being persecuted.)

The reason for this ubiquitous phenomenon of Muslim persecution of Christians is threefold:

Christianity is the largest religion in the world.  There are Christians practically everywhere around the globe, including in much of the Muslim world.  Moreover, because much of the land that Islam seized was originally Christian—including the Middle East and North Africa, the region that is today known as the ‘Arab world’—Muslims everywhere are still confronted with vestiges of Christianity, for example, in Syria, where many ancient churches and monasteries are currently being destroyed by al-Qaeda linked, U.S. supported ‘freedom fighters.’  Similarly, in Egypt, where Alexandria was a major center of ancient Christianity before the 7th century Islamic invasions, there still remain at least 10 million Coptic Christians (though some put the number at much higher). Due to sheer numbers alone, then, indigenous Christians are much more visible and exposed to attack by Muslims than other religious groups throughout the Arab world.   Yet as CNS News puts it, ‘President Obama expressed hope that the ‘Arab Spring’ would give rise to greater religious freedom in North Africa and the Middle East, which has had the world’s highest level of hostility towards religion in every year since 2007, when Pew first began measuring it. However, the study finds that these regions actually experienced the largest increase in religious hostilities in 2012.’

Christianity is a proselytizing faith that seeks to win over converts.  No other major religion — including Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism — except Islam itself has this missionary aspect (these faiths tend to be coterminous with their respective ethnicities: Buddhists, Asians; Judaism, Jews; Hinduism, Hindus).  Thus because Christianity is the only religion that is actively confronting Muslims with the truths of its own message, not only is it the primary religion to be accused of proselytizing but, by publicly uttering teachings that contradict Muhammad’s, Christians are accused of blaspheming as well.  Similarly, this proselytizing element is behind the fact that most Muslims who apostatize to other religions overwhelmingly convert to Christianity.  Finally, if indigenous Christians are many in the Middle East, because that is the cradle of Christianity, in other regions with large Muslim populations, such as sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia, Christian missionaries have won over millions of converts to the faith — many of whom are now targeted and persecuted according to Islam’s anti-apostasy law, which often calls for the death penalty.

Christianity is the quintessential religion of martyrdom.  From its inception — beginning with Jesus followed by his disciples and the early Church — many Christians have accepted martyrdom rather than recant their faith, in ancient times at the hands of Romans, in Medieval and modern times at the hands of pious Muslims and others.  Few other religions encourage their adherents to embrace death rather than recant, as captured by Christ’s own words: ‘But whoever denies me before men, I will deny him before my Father in heaven’ (Matt 10:33; see also Luke 14:33).’   Conversely, Islam teaches Muslims to openly Read more…

Nigeria: At Least 37 Murdered After Islamists Attack Christian College, Village In Adamawa State

AFP – “Suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed at least 37 people in three separate attacks in northeast Nigeria, including at a theological college, a local government official and residents said on Thursday.

The coordinated attacks in Adamawa state late on Wednesday came just a day after Islamist militant fighters were blamed for killing 43 people, most of them students, as they slept at a boarding school in Yobe state.

The chairman of the Madagali local government area in Adamawa, Maina Ularamu, said ‘a large number of militants carried out three separate attacks on Shuwa and Kirchinga in my local government area and on Michika in neighbouring Michika (district)’.

‘The gunmen divided themselves into three groups and separately attacked the three locations,’ he told AFP.

He had earlier put the death toll in Shuwa, part of Madagali local government area, at 17.

But he later told AFP that eight more bodies were recovered in the village, including three from a Christian college, confirming the account of a resident about the three burnt corpse found in the seminary.

‘The death toll in the Shuwa attack now stands at 25 after eight more bodies were recovered, including three discovered under the burnt debris of the theological school,’ Ularamu said.

In Shuwa, several buildings were burnt, including a Christian theological college and a section of a secondary school.

In Kirchinga, Samuel Garba said the gunmen were all dressed in military uniform — a tactic frequently employed by the militant fighters in previous, similar attacks.

‘The gunmen… killed eight people in our village and burnt many houses,’ he added.

‘Four people have so far been confirmed dead in Michika,’ said Abdul Kassim, who lives in the village.

The dead were a young boy who was trying to run away and three security guards, he added.” Read more.

The amputation took place in the remote rural town of Maskanah in the northern province of Aleppo, according to a series of tweets posted by the account of a supporter of the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

The first showed a photograph of a blindfolded man having his arm positioned on a table by fighters as a masked man wielding a sword waits nearby. Another man, wearing a white robe of the kind favored in Arab Gulf countries, is reading a statement. A caption states that the blindfolded man is a thief who had asked to have his hand cut off ‘in order to cleanse his sins.’

A second photograph was taken just as the sword is about to strike the hand while a burly fighter restrains the victim.

A third picture posted an hour later is too graphic to show here. The man appears to be passed out, with his bloodied arm and his severed hand resting on the table. Fresh slashes in the wood suggest it took four swipes of the sword to cut the hand off.” Read more.

British Imam: There Will Be More Murder, Beheadings On The Streets Of England

This unrepentant imam, Anjem Choudary, is the same imam who contends that non-Muslims are all guilty of crimes against “Allah.” During an interview with the BBC in 2005, Choudary asserted that only Muslims were innocent people. Non-Muslims “have not accepted Islam, and as far as we are concerned, that is a crime against [Allah]… as far as Muslims are concerned, you are innocent if you are a Muslim – then you are innocent in the eyes of [Allah]. If you are a non-Muslim, then you are guilty of not believing in [Allah].” According to Anjem Choudary and all like-minded followers of the “prophet” of Islam, if you don’t believe in “Allah” then you’re rejecting the “holy” Qur’an. If you’re rejecting the “holy” Qur’an you must therefore be embracing something else. And if you’re embracing something else, that could lead to deadly consequences …

The Huffington Post – “Radical preacher Anjem Choudary, the leader of the now banned Islam4UK, said ‘there will be other Lee Rigbys’ during a heated debate on immigration.

He also joked about expecting Home Secretary Theresa May to change the law, so she can take away his British passport.

Fresh from taking on the debate over the welfare state, Channel 5 last night aired a special programme on the ever-so-simple and light-hearted topic of immigration, including contributions from Choudary, and also a failed Apprentice candidate, a former pop star, and a woman famous for having been married to the England football manager.

Former editor of The Sun, Kelvin MacKenzie, was also on the panel.

But none sparked such a reaction on social media as Choudary, with many questioning why he should be allowed on the programme…

In an interview with one of the presenters, Nick Ferrari, Choudary said: ‘Afghanistan is not occupying Britain. Britain (sic) are going to Muslim countries and killing people.

‘This will have repercussions in this country and unless we wake up to this fact, there will be other Lee Rigbys.'” Read more.

Then the polio virus struck and Shaista was no longer able to stand, her legs buckling beneath her weight. Today, her mother cries a lot and wonders what will become of her daughter in Pakistan’s male-dominated society, where a woman’s value is often measured by the quality of her husband.

‘It is not a hardship just for the child, but for the whole family,’ said the child’s 18-year-old mother, Samia Gul. ‘It is very difficult for a poor family like us. She will be dependent on us for the rest of her life.’

Shaista is one of five new polio cases to surface in Pakistan in just the first month of this year. Last year, Pakistan recorded 92 new cases, beating Nigeria and Afghanistan — the only other polio-endemic countries — by almost 2 to 1, the World Health Organisation said.

Pakistan’s beleaguered battle to eradicate polio is threatening a global, multi-billion-dollar campaign to wipe out the disease worldwide. Because of Pakistan, the virus is spreading to countries that were previously polio-free, UN officials say. ‘The largest polio virus reservoir of the world,’ is in Peshawar, in northwestern Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan, according to WHO…

Fresh cases of polio — traced through genetic sequencing to the Pakistani strain of the disease — are showing up in countries that were previously polio-free, including Syria and Egypt, as well as in the Gaza Strip, said Ban Khalid Al-Dhayi, the spokeswoman for UNICEF in Pakistan. UNICEF is tasked with persuading a reluctant tribal population that lives along Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan — perhaps one of the most dangerous places on the planet — to vaccinate their children.” Read more.

By Paul Dakiki, AsiaNews – “A jihadist group linked to al -Qaeda has released a set of rules of submission for Christians of Raqqa. These include a protection fee, the order to practice their faith in the privacy of their homes and a ban on wearing any obvious sign of Christianity.

The rules (termed ‘Agreement’) were drawn up and are being imposed by members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), a group linked to al- Qaeda in Iraq and which aims to create a single caliphate that spans the Middle East, North Africa, Andalusia and southern Italy, the ancient Arab and Islamic lands.

Raqqa city in northern Syria had 300 thousand inhabitants before the start of the civil war in March 2011.  Of these, 1% was Christian. Now many people have fled and the city is in the hands ISIL, which released the text of the Agreement on jihadist websites.

Under the threat of violence, Christians must pay a ‘jiziya’, the ancient mandatory fee for non-Muslims.

Rich Christians have to pay a sum equal to the value of 13 grams of pure gold (half an ounce), those of the middle class half of the sum, and the poor a quarter.

Christians are banned from displaying crosses or symbols of their faith in areas frequented by Muslims and especially the market; they must not use loudspeakers for the call to prayer; they must perform their rituals behind closed doors in buildings of worship.

The group also demands that Christians comply with the rule for modest dressing that is imposed on all inhabitants.

Christians are forbidden to carry weapons and they are also forbidden to restore any of the churches or monasteries in the area that have been damaged. Those who does not adhere to these rules, will share in the destiny of those ‘people of war and rebellion’, in short they will be killed …” Read more.

By Khaled Abu Toameh, Gatestone Institute – “Palestinian schoolchildren in the Gaza Strip have been denied the opportunity to learn about human rights after the Hamas government determined that such a subject ‘dangerously contravenes Palestinian and Islamic culture.’

Hamas’s announcement came in response to an attempt by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to include a course on human rights in schools run by the agency in the Gaza Strip.

The UNRWA bid drew strong condemnations from the Hamas government, whose representatives accused the international agency of seeking to ‘brainwash’ Palestinian children.

Mutasame al-Minawi, a senior official with the Hamas-run Ministry of Education, explained that the main reason why his government was opposed to the human rights subject being taught in Palestinian schools is because it ‘ignores the nakba [catastrophe] of the Palestinian people, seeks to scrap the right of return for Palestinian refugees [to Israel] and promotes the culture of peaceful resistance and submission as a way of restoring our rights.’

Al-Minawi said that UNRWA proposed two years ago to include in its school curriculum the subject of human rights. UNRWA was hoping, he added, that the subject would be taught to children from Grades 7-9.

According to the Hamas official, his government back then expressed reservations about some of the contents of the subject, prompting UNRWA to amend about 40% of the material.

But recently, UNRWA decided to go ahead with its plan to teach human rights in its schools in the Gaza Strip, ignoring warnings from the Hamas government, al-Minawi claimed. ‘UNRWA is acting as a state-within-a-state,’ he charged. ‘They need to know the limits of their power and that they are committed to the curriculum taught in areas under UNRWA’s jurisdiction.’

The Hamas official said that UNRWA’s human rights course was aimed at making Palestinian children develop ‘negative sentiments towards the armed resistance although it is legitimate for a people under occupation.’

What is also worrying Hamas is that UNRWA is seeking to teach Palestinian children about the disastrous repercussions of wars and violence by depicting a child burning a military uniform. ‘This does not serve the cause of human rights,’ the Hamas official said. ‘They want to raise children on calmness.’

The Hamas protests forced UNRWA to suspend its plan to teach the subject of human rights in its schools. Some Palestinians criticized UNRWA for ‘succumbing’ to threats, while others said they were aware that the international agency had no choice but to comply.

In an attempt to calm Hamas, UNRWA denied that its school curriculum contravened Palestinian tradition and culture.

A spokesman for UNRWA said that his agency consults with ‘all components of Palestinian society’ about its human rights courses.

Hamas’s real problem with the UNRWA curriculum is that it could spoil the Islamist movement’s ongoing efforts to stir the hearts and minds of Palestinian children to wage jihad against the ‘enemies’ of Islam.

Hamas wants Palestinian children to be taught how to become suicide bombers and seek the death of Jews and ‘infidels.’

Hamas does not want Palestinian children to learn about civil rights heroes such as Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. These people were opposed to violence and therefore their ideology, according to Hamas, is in violation of Palestinian and Islamic culture.” Read more.
