By Peter Bergen and Jennifer Rowland, CNN – “From around Aleppo in western Syria to small areas of Falluja in central Iraq, al Qaeda now controls territory that stretches more than 400 miles across the heart of the Middle East, according to English and Arab language news accounts as well as accounts on jihadist websites.

Indeed, al Qaeda appears to control more territory in the Arab world than it has done at any time in its history.

The focus of al Qaeda’s leaders has always been regime change in the Arab world in order to install Taliban-style regimes. Al Qaeda’s leader Ayman al-Zawahiri acknowledged as much in his 2001 autobiography, ‘Knights Under the Banner of the Prophet,’ when he explained that the most important strategic goal of al Qaeda was to seize control of a state, or part of a state, somewhere in the Muslim world, explaining that, ‘without achieving this goal our actions will mean nothing.’

Now al-Zawahiri is closer to his goal than he has ever been. On Friday al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Iraq seized control of parts of the city of Falluja and parts of the city of Ramadi, both of which are located in Iraq’s restive Anbar Province.

Anbar is home to predominantly Sunni Muslims, who feel that that the Shiite-dominated Iraqi government of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki treats the Sunnis as second-class citizens.

Sectarian tensions in Anbar recently burst into several all-out revolts against the government, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), as the al-Qaeda affiliate there is known, quickly seized the opportunity to notch some battlefield victories.

Government forces increased their presence around Falluja in response and on Tuesday tribal leaders issued a statement urging people who had fled the city or stopped reporting to work to return.

ISIS is also operating in Syria, where it has established a presence in many areas of the Aleppo and Idlib Governorates in the northwest. In August, ISIS launched a propaganda series on video highlighting their activities in Syria, which includes interviews with fighters; the ‘graduation’ of a group of mujahedin ‘cubs’ (aged about 7 to 10 years old) from training, and sermons at local mosques preaching al Qaeda’s interpretation of Islam.

The al-Nusra front has claimed to control parts of at least a dozen Syrian towns. Those include sections of the ancient city of the Aleppo in the northwest, where fighters have been filmed running a community fair and preaching al Qaeda’s values to crowds of children.

The group has also released videos on jihadist websites claiming that it is providing services to the people of several towns in the governorate of Idlib, which borders the Aleppo Governorate to the west. Al Nusra claims that it is a quasi-government and service-provider in the towns of Binnish, Taum, and Saraqib.

Al-Nusra fighters allied to al Qaeda function like a government in areas they control in Syria. The group provides daily deliveries of bread, free running water and electricity, a health clinic, and a strict justice system based on Sharia law in the eastern Syrian city of Ash Shaddadi, where it also took control of the city’s wheat silos and oil wells.

In September a CNN reporting team concluded, ‘Al Qaeda has swept to power with the aim of imposing a strict Islamist ideology on Syrians across large swathes of Syria’s rebel-held north.’

In sum, al Qaeda affiliates now control much of northern and northwestern Syria as well as some parts of eastern Syria, as well as much of Anbar province, which is around a third of Iraqi territory.” Read more.

By Raymond Ibrahim, American Thinker – “Arabic-language websites reported earlier this week that the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which throughout the course of the war against the Assad government has committed any number of atrocities — from decapitating ‘infidels’ to burning churches — has successfully ‘forced’ two Armenian Christian families to convert to Islam.

A video accompanies some of these reports.  In it, what appears to be an elderly Armenian man stands alongside an Islamic cleric who announces the Christian man’s conversion to Islam — to thunderous cries of ‘Allahu Akbar!’  In his exultation, the cleric makes exuberant statements like ‘You see, we have no honor without Islam — without crying aloud that ‘There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet!”  (This appears to be another way of saying, ‘Only by joining our winning team can you ever escape dishonor,’ the lot of all non-Muslim ‘infidels.’)

The cleric also adds that, because the man is the head of his household, his Christian wife and children are all now Muslim as well — ‘all praise to Allah!’  And if they reject their new Islamic identity, they become ‘apostates,’ a crime punishable by death.

The rather flippant and sarcastic text that accompanies this video on some websites points out the obvious:

After decades of peaceful coexistence between the various religions of Syria, and after decades of living under the moderate form of Levantine Islam … these two Armenian families were none too keen on entering Islam or learning of its eminence — except at the hands of DAASH [al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant], which has been presenting a ‘rosy’ picture of Islam and Muslims, by way of chopping heads, whipping people, and general repression.  Thus did these two Christian Armenian families finally enter Islam, willingly — but only at the hands of DAASH.

In other words, it’s ‘curious,’ to say the least, that Christians who for generations lived amid moderate Muslim majorities in Syria opted to remain Christian, are now ‘suddenly’ attracted to Islam — and at the hands of a jihadi organization that has been bombing churches, kidnapping and beheading Christians, and teaching even children to slaughter Christians wherever they may be found.

Sound like genuine conviction to you?  Maybe the 2012 news that ‘a family of Armenian Christians was found murdered, and all members of the family horribly decapitated‘ in Syria is compelling these Armenian families into seeing the ‘wisdom’ of embracing Islam?

By Mark Schliebs, National Affairs – “THE brother of an Australian man jailed for terrorism-related offences in Saudi Arabia has been delivering lectures at some of the nation’s most controversial Islamic centres while encouraging jihadists to show their ‘might’ against disbelievers.

Perth man Junaid Thorne, a 24-year-old who has spent much of his life in Saudi Arabia, has spoken at Sydney’s al-Risalah and Melbourne’s al-Furqan Islamic centres in recent weeks as part of a lecture tour backed by little-known radical organisation Millatu Ibrahim, which is banned in Germany.

Police and terrorism experts yesterday said they were not aware of the organisation having an active presence in Australia.

At al-Risalah, he sat in front of a Millatu Ibrahim banner – featuring the logo of the al-Qa’ida-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant used by the most extreme Sunni fighters in Syria – to deliver his first “public lecture” since being deported from Riyadh in July.

His deportation came after his brother, Shayden, was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in a Riyadh prison for possessing terrorism-related materials and supporting and encouraging terrorism. Mr Thorne, whose father is a Noongar Aboriginal man, was detained for two months for protesting against his brother’s arrest in December 2011.

According to those who attended the Sydney lecture last month, ‘Sheik Muhammad Junaid’ told followers that businessmen should be donating money to jihadists around the world.

‘Support oppressed Muslims across the world, support the mujaheddin,’ he said, according to a summary of the speech that appeared on social media after the event.

‘Money comes and goes, but what remains is what you gave in the cause of Allah. Most of the Ayat (numbered Koranic verses) mention financing jihad before jihad, in relation to the individual (sic) performance.’ …

In other online postings, Mr Thorne indicated that he was involved in a group called Millatu Ibrahim Perth and quoted American-born al-Qa’ida militant Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in a US drone strike in Yemen in 2011…

Millatu Ibrahim Perth’s website was recently closed down, but it has used its Facebook page to declare a hatred of disbelievers.

‘We hate the Kuffar and everything that they worship,’ it reads. ‘We hate their constitutions, we reject their way of life, we reject their political systems, we reject their parliaments, we reject their democracy, capitalism, liberalism, socialism, communism and every other filthy disbelieving ‘ism’ that has come to act as a hindrance from Islam, the pure religion of Allah to rule from the east to the west.'” Read more.

Syria: Christian Man Killed For Refusing To Convert To Islam And Worship “Allah”

Where there are reports of one Christian killed for the faith of Jesus there are undoubtedly many more that go unreported. The article below doesn’t specify how this Christian prisoner was killed by Al Qaeda, but as we know all too well they have stated and demonstrated their preferred method in the past on more than on occasion …

As Arabic-language website khabararmani.com reports, the man was killed by members of al Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant in one of Aleppo prisons controlled by the group.

Estimates of deaths in the Syrian civil war, per opposition activist groups, vary between 95,850 and 130,435. 2.3 million refugees who have registered — and tens of thousands more are waiting to register — with the office of the UN High Commissioner on Refugees. The actual number is feared to be much higher. Almost half of the refugees are girls and women, while another quarter are boys under 18.

Libya: American Teacher Shot Dead By Suspected Islamists For Sharing His Faith In Christ With Muslims

By BosNewsLife – “A month after an American teacher was gunned down in Libya friends and family members are convinced that he was killed because of his Christian faith.

The body of Ronald Thomas Smith II, who taught chemistry at the International School in the port city of Benghazi, was found December 5, near the residential compound that housed him and other teachers in an upscale neighborhood.

He had been at school in the morning but went home to change his clothes and go jogging at midday, said the school’s director Adel al-Mansouri. The area is also the site of the U.S. diplomatic mission, where the U.S. Ambassador and three other Americans were killed last year.

The 33-year-old teacher, arrived in turbulent Libya eighteen months ago, after serving on staff at the Austin Stone Community Church, a Southern Baptist congregation in the United States.

The ‘much beloved’ teacher wanted to be ‘a blessing to the Libyan people,’ church leaders said in a statement…

While no group claimed responsibility for his death, Christians said Smith’s faith in Christ, and his talking about it among Muslims, seems to be the main was the motive behind the slaying.

Additionally, Islamic militants had demanded the kidnapping of Americans living in Libya.

‘Ronnie’s greatest desire was for peace and prosperity in Libya and for the people of Libya to have the joy of knowing God through Christ,’ local church leaders added.

Smith, who graduated in 2006 from the University of Texas in Austin with a master’s degree in chemistry, moved to Benghazi with his wife, Anita, and young son. His wife and son had gone home for Christmas, but he reportedly stayed behind to help students with final exams for the semester.

Author Raymond Ibrahim, who wrote ‘Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians’ said in comments published by the website of Christian broadcaster CBN that the killing is part of a wider Islamic campaign against devoted American Christians talking about their faith with Muslims.” Read more.

Adnkronos – “Police on Friday arrested an unemployed Tunisian immigrant on suspicion of stalking his Italian ex-girlfriend for nearly two years and threatening to cut off her head, reports said.

Police arrested 36-year-old Valid Smiri, as he tried to climb over a gate and enter his ex-girlfriend’s apartment building in the town of Quartu, near Cagliari, the Unione Sarda newspaper reported.

Witnesses said Smiri was shouting: ‘I’ll kill you, I am an Arab, you don’t know me. Even if they arrest me, I’ll come back and kill you. I’ll cut off your head!’

As police led him away, Smiri also railed against the Italian government.

The 47-year-old woman ended a three-month relationship with Smiri in 2012, a decision he had refused to accept.

She reported Smiri to police three times after he kept bombarding her with phone-calls and text messages begging her to get back together with him or else, investigators said.

He also hung around outside the woman’s apartment building and hurled insults at her and threatened to kill her each time he saw her go in or out, saying she was ‘his’, according to investigators.” Source – Adnkronos.

A Kingdom Divided: Al-Qaeda Terror Group Orders Members To Kill Rival Al-Qaeda Group Members

So much for being merciful to one another. That verse of the Qur’an must have been abrogated, too. Division. Dysfunction. Destruction. Where would Islam be without it? …

Qur’an Sura 48:29, “Mohammed is [Allah’s] apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another.”

Al Arabiya – “Al-Qaeda group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) on Tuesday urged its fighters to ‘crush’ other rebel groups in Syria, in an audio message from the group’s spokesman.

Abu Mohammad al-Adnani called on ISIL fighters in Syria to ‘crush them (the rebels) totally and kill the conspiracy at birth,’ warning opposition fighters that ‘none of you will remain, and we will make of you an example to all those who think of following the same path,’ AFP reported.

ISIL’s threat came hours after a rival al-Qaeda group said it has joined forces with other rebel groups in fighting ISIL.

Al-Nusra Front leader Abu Mohammad al-Golani said in an audio recording that ‘high-level’ fighting erupted between his group and ISIL on Tuesday.

He blamed the fighting on what he said were ‘mistakes’ made by ISIL, such as the arrest of a Nusra commander in Raqqa.

In his message, Golani urged all rebel groups to unite against President Bashar al-Assad regime.

‘This unfortunate situation prompted us to make this initiative to save the ground from loss. This initiative calls for the formation of a legitimate committee from all recognized factions with an independent leadership,’ he said.

Golani also noted that all infighting in the groups must end and an exchange of prisoners should take place, adding that rebels should focus their efforts on fighting Assad’s forces and not fighting each other.

Divisions within al-Qaeda

Divisions within al-Qaeda appeared in November 2013, when al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri appointed al-Nusra Front jihadists to carry the network’s banner in Syria and ordered the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant to disband.

Zawahiri’s remarks confirmed a written order issued in June that has so far gone unheeded.

Zawahiri said that al-Nusra Front was the jihadist group’s only branch in Syria, tasked with reporting ‘to the general command,’ and will no longer operate under the banner of al-Qaeda’s Iraq affiliate.

‘The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is to be abolished, while the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) remains functioning,’ he said.” Read more.

Syria: Al Qaida Kills 50 Prisoners At Aleppo Hospital – “The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights quoted local medical sources as saying that over 30 al Qaida militants died over the past few hours in the north-western region of Idlib in clashes between al Qaida fighters and local rebels. The dead militants are all reportedly non-Syrian members of ISIS. Al Qaida militants have executed overnight 50 Syrian activists they had detained in Aleppo, activists in the northern Syrian city told ANSA on Tuesday in a Skype interview. The prisoners were killed at a former eye hospital in Aleppo, the activists said. The sources said the executions were carried out by members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, an al Qaida-linked militant group in Syria which has been attacked by local insurgents over the past few days.” Read more.

Egypt: Christian Man Shot Outside Church By Suspected Islamists, Dies After Hospitals Refuse Treatment

By BosNewsLife – “A young Coptic Christian man has died from gunshot injuries in Egypt’s capital Cairo, after three local hospitals turned him away, Christians said Tuesday, January 6.

Ihab Ghattas, 23, reportedly died on New Year’s Eve from a gunshot wound to the head because of ‘negligence’ as the hospitals which refused to treat him, said Copts activist group Maspero Youth Union (MYU).

He was shot outside Mar Girgis (St George’s) Church in the Ain Shams area of Cairo after celebrating mass by suspected supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, MYU said in published remarks.

Ghattas was allegedly denied access in one hospital because it was deemed not to be an emergency, while another cited ‘a lack of beds.’

The third hospital refused to treat him due to the absence of an intensive care unit, the MYU said…

A fourth hospital, St. Peter’s in Heliopolis, admitted him but he died soon afterwards, news reports said.

However doctors could no safe his life as he had been ‘bleeding for three hours’, Christians said. MYU has demanded an investigation, but it was not immediately clear Tuesday, January 6, when and if authorities will search for the attackers.

Muslim Brotherhood supporters reportedly fired birdshot at St. George’s Church, after which a group of young people from the church, including Ghattas, had joined police in defending it.

News of the latest killing overshadowed Coptic Christmas, which was celebrated in Cairo and other areas Tuesday January 7 by Egypt’s Copts, who comprise 10 percent of Egypt’s population…

The tensions came before the trial was scheduled to resume Wednesday, January 7, against Egypt’s democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi, who was ousted in a military coup last July.” Read more.

NBC 4 New York – “A 27-year-old man has been charged with murder after the landlord of his Brooklyn building was found nearly decapitated in the basement Tuesday, police say.

Rasel Siddiquee was arrested early Wednesday in connection with the death of Mahuddin Mahmud, a 57-year-old businessman and father of three who was found with his head nearly cut off and his face burned in the basement of a building he owned, according to the NYPD.

Police found Mahmud’s body after getting a 911 call about an assault at the building on McDonald Avenue in Kensington. Siddiquee lived in the basement, police say.

Family and friends say Mahmud, a Bangladeshi immigrant, came to the U.S. decades ago and worked hard to build a computer software training business. A childhood friend told NBC 4 New York that Mahmud believed so much in the American dream that his wedding portrait hangs next to an American flag.” Read more.

By Dalit Halevy and Tova Dvorin, INN – “The Tunisian Parliament approved a new constitution Monday. Despite reports that the constitution guarantees both separation of powers and civil rights, it lacks one crucial clause: absolute freedom of religion – for its politicians.

The new constitution names Islam as the official religion. While RT reported Sunday that Sharia Law will not be the basis of the constitution, Article 73 of the new plan does demand that the President be exclusively Muslim – as a model of being a good Tunisian citizen.

Other edicts enacted by the charter include a landmark move granting equal rights to both genders. ‘All male and female citizens have the same rights and duties. They are equal before the law without discrimination,’ states article 20 of the text, which was approved by 159 lawmakers out of the 169 who voted, according to AFP. Human rights groups have lauded the move.

Two years ago, Tunisians elected the moderate Islamist Ennahda party in the country’s first free and competitive elections. It formed a government in alliance with two secular parties.

Libya’s Lurch Toward Sharia Law Sends Chill Throughout Christian Community

By Perry Chiaramonte, Fox News – “Libya’s recent edict that its coming constitution will be based on Shariah law has sent a chill through the North African nation’s small Christian community.

Libya’s Coptic Christians, who number about 300,000, or 5 percent of the population, were allowed to practice their faith under dictator Muammar Qaddafi. But since the strongman was ousted from power, and ultimately killed, Muslim fundamentalists have increasingly filled the power void. Last month, the national assembly voted in favor of making Koranic law, or Shariah, the basis of all legislative decisions, meaning Islam will shape all future banking, criminal and financial cases.

‘Islamic law is the source of legislation in Libya,’ stated the General National Congress in a statement released shortly after the vote was held. ‘All state institutions need to comply with this.’

A special committee has begun reviewing existing laws to ensure that they comply with Shariah, according to a recent report.

The emerging political and legal system’s orientation, combined with the rise of militants in the oil-rich nation, has left Christians feeling like the promise of democracy in the wake of Qaddafi’s fall has been broken.

‘NATO went to war in Libya on the basis of a full democracy,’ Patrick Sookhdeo, international director for human rights group The Barnabus Fund, told FoxNews.com. ‘But what we have ended up with is a fractured government in which religious extremism of the worst kind has now taken over the government.’

‘The concern is that this conflict has produced the exact opposite of a democratic government,’ he added.” Read more.

BosNewsLife – “At least 30 people were feared dead Tuesday, January 7, after suspected Islamic gunmen attacked a Christian village in central Nigeria, local officials and survivors said.

The fighters, who were believed to be Muslim Fulani herdsmen, opened fire on residents and torched dozens of homes in Shonong village in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, explained Daniel Dem, a member of the state house of assembly.

‘Hundreds’ of attackers stormed the Shonong early Monday, January 6, when most of the villagers had gone to farms, killing mostly children, women and the elderly, survivor Shom Toma was quoted as saying by Nigeria’s ThisDay newspaper.

Toma, who was treated for gunshot injuries at the regional Vom Christian Hospital, said he ‘narrowly escaped’ as he was moulding blocks around his house when the attackers arrived.

Domestic animals of the targeted farming Christian Berom villagers were ‘slaughtered in a large number while many others were taken away by the attackers,’ Nigerian media quoted villagers as saying.

Another eyewitness, who was not named, reportedly said some 30 human remains were recovered so far, but added that ‘many’ other villagers remained missing. Authorities have not yet confirmed the final death toll…

The attack came barely two days after the funeral for two chiefs of Shonong and nearby Attarkar village, who were reportedly killed two days before Christmas, Nigerian media said.” Read more.
