Kenya: Muslim Rioters Torch Christian Church After Islamist Cleric Dies In Shooting

The Times of India – “Rioters set fire to a church in Kenya’s port city of Mombasa Friday, in furious battles with the police sparked by the killing of a Muslim cleric, police said.

Witnesses said one protester was shot and wounded, as armed paramilitary police moved towards a mosque, whose leaders have been accused of links to Somalia’s Islamist Shebab, insurgents who attacked a Nairobi shopping mall last month.

Riots were sparked after unknown gunmen assassinated a popular Muslim preacher and his three companions in a drive-by shooting late on Thursday, a killing that mirrored the murder of another cleric last year which provoked days of deadly riots.

Radical preachers have said the killing Thursday was an ‘execution’ by the police, claims the force has denied.

‘They have burnt the Salvation Army church and we are now trying to repulse them with tear gas,’ a senior police officer said.

Slain cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Ismail was viewed as the successor to Aboud Rogo Mohammed, a controversial preacher accused of links to Somalia’s Shebab insurgents, who was shot dead in August 2012.

Like in the case of Rogo, radical preachers have said the killing of Ismail was an ‘execution’ by the police, which denied the claims.

Thick smoke apparently from burning tyres rose around Mombasa’s Masjid Musa mosque — where both Rogo and Ismail used to preach — while police fired tear gas and youths hurled stones in return. Several gunshots were also heard.

One wounded protester with his clothes soaked in blood was rushed to a nearby clinic.

‘He was shot in the stomach… he is bleeding profusely and we just pray for him,’ said Salim Abdallah, a witness.

It was not clear who fired the shot. Mombasa is Kenya’s main port and a major tourist hub, popular with visitors coming to enjoy the white sand beaches on the Indian Ocean coastline.

The deaths follow attacks last month by the Shebab, who launched a deadly assault on an upmarket Nairobi shopping mall, killing at least 67 people in a four-day bloodbath.

The Islamists have since threatened “rivers of blood” would flow in fresh attacks if Kenya does not pull its troops out of Somalia.” Read more.

By Raymond Ibrahim, American Thinker – “Rereading some early history books concerning the centuries-long jihad on Europe, it recently occurred to me how ignorant the modern West is of its own past. The historical narrative being disseminated today bears very little resemblance to reality.

Consider some facts for a moment:

A mere decade after the birth of Islam in the 7th century, the jihad burst out of Arabia. Leaving aside all the thousands of miles of ancient lands and civilizations that were permanently conquered, today casually called the ‘Islamic world’ — including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran, and parts of India and China — much of Europe was also, at one time or another, conquered by the sword of Islam.

Among other nations and territories that were attacked and/or came under Muslim domination are (to give them their modern names in no particular order): Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Sicily, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Lithuania, Romania, Albania, Serbia, Armenia, Georgia, Crete, Cyprus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Belarus, Malta, Sardinia, Moldova, Slovakia, and Montenegro.

In 846 Rome was sacked and the Vatican defiled by Muslim Arab raiders; some 700 years later, in 1453, Christendom’s other great basilica, Constantinople’s Holy Wisdom (or Hagia Sophia) was conquered by Muslim Turks, permanently.

The few European regions that escaped direct Islamic occupation due to their northwest remoteness include Great Britain, Scandinavia, and Germany. That, of course, does not mean that they were not attacked by Islam. Indeed, in the furthest northwest of Europe, in Iceland, Christians used to pray that God save them from the ‘terror of the Turk.’ These fears were not unfounded since as late as 1627 Muslim corsairs raided the Christian island, seizing four hundred captives and selling them in the slave markets of Algiers.Nor did America escape. A few years after the formation of the United States, in 1800, American trading ships in the Mediterranean were plundered and their sailors enslaved by Muslim corsairs. The ambassador of Tripoli explained to Thomas Jefferson that it was a Muslim’s ‘right and duty to make war upon them [non-Muslims] wherever they could be found, and to enslave as many as they could take as prisoners.’In short, for roughly one millennium — punctuated by a Crusader-rebuttal that the modern West is obsessed with demonizing — Islam daily posed an existential threat to Christian Europe and by extension Western civilization.

And therein lies the rub: Today, whether as taught in high school or graduate school, whether as portrayed by Hollywood or the news media, the predominant historic narrative is that Muslims are the historic ‘victims’ of ‘intolerant’ Western Christians. ‘Widespread Death And Destruction’: Why Is The World Silent As Christians Are Persecuted?

Mark 13:13, “… you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end shall be saved.”

By David Harris, The Algemeiner – “On September 22, dozens of Christian worshipers were killed at a church in Pakistan. Many more were wounded. The assailants were jihadist suicide bombers. This was not the first attack on the small Christian community in Pakistan.

In Egypt, repeated deadly assaults have targeted Coptic Christian churches. Some members of this ancient faith group, convinced they have no future in the Arab world’s most populous nation, have emigrated.

In Iraq, the Chaldean Christian population has dwindled in recent years. Persecution at the hands of Islamist groups has been a key factor driving people out.

In Nigeria, periodic attacks by radical Muslim groups on Christian worshipers and their churches have brought widespread death and destruction.

In Turkey, the Greek Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarchate has had to face one bureaucratic roadblock after another.

In Turkish-occupied northern Cyprus, many Greek Orthodox churches have been destroyed or otherwise desecrated since the Turkish army first invaded in 1974.

And in Sudan, until the break-up of the country in 2011 that brought the nation of South Sudan into existence, millions of Christians in the south were targeted by the Muslim north, resulting in an unimaginably high death toll.

This is an incomplete list, but it should be more than enough to alarm the world, and especially, I would have thought, the Christian world. But, alas, with a few notable exceptions, there has been silence.

As a Jew, I find this silence unfathomable.

We Jews know quite well that the sin of silence is not a solution to acts of oppression.

And that applies not only to the obvious example of the Holocaust, but also to the postwar plight of Jews in several Muslim-majority countries.

There were once nearly a million Jews in these lands, but today there are fewer than 50,000.

Jewish communities from Iraq to Libya, from Egypt to Yemen, were driven out, while those in Turkey and Iran are but a shadow of their former selves.

As this was taking place, the world was largely indifferent.

The UN never met in emergency session. The media barely devoted any attention. Diplomats in Brussels and elsewhere hardly gave it a second thought. And, by the way, the churches were not heard from, either.

As the surviving Jews left North Africa and the Muslim Middle East, the world averted its eyes. But now the Jews aren’t available for their ‘convenient’ role as scapegoats, so the dubious honor falls to the Christians (and, in Iran, to the Baha’i). Could it be possible that the world once again remains asleep in the face of murderous attacks, widespread fear, and declining numbers?

I asked a well-placed Christian prelate why the muted reaction, why the failure to take to the streets, demand action of Western governments, and demonstrate solidarity with co-religionists.

Demented: Muslim Father From Canada Beheads His Four Children

Calgary Herald – “The mother of four young boys who were allegedly beheaded by their Somali-Canadian father says she doesn’t know of any motive for the killings.

Police in Somalia arrested Omar Hassan, 60, after the children, aged 11, 9, 7 and 6, were killed Monday, Qadro Addawe told The Canadian Press.

The alleged slayings happened in the central town of Beledweyne, about 330 kilometres north of the capital Mogadishu.

Speaking from Mogadishu, Addawe said Hassan was a taxi driver in Calgary and had returned home a few months ago.

She said the children had never been to Canada, but had Canadian citizenship through her estranged husband, who had migrated to Canada 30 years ago.

‘They were born in Kenya, but they were Canadian because the father was Canadian,’ she said.

A regional police commissioner told Agence France-Presse Wednesday that the children’s bodies were found near a village and have been buried.

The news service quoted Col. Isak Ali Abdulle as saying: ‘The man handed himself in and is in custody now. I think he is not mentally fit but we are questioning him.’

Addawe, 29, said she does not know of any motive for the killings.

She insisted Hassan was mentally stable.

‘He had some health problems, but he had no mental problems.'” Read more.

Al-Shabaab: Breathing New Life Into The Word Of ‘Allah’

AFP, Al Arabiya – “Somalia’s Islamist group al-Shabaab threatened on Wednesday to increase militant action in Kenya, after the country refused to withdraw its troops from Somalia, reported Agence France-Presse.

The al-Qaeda linked al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for last week’s attack on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall, in which at least 67 people died, with 39 more listed as missing by the Red Cross.

‘We will strike Kenyans where it hurts the most, turn their cities into graveyards and rivers of blood will flow in Nairobi,’ al-Shabaab said in a recent statement.

‘The Kenyan government’s decision to keep its invading force in Somalia is an indication that they haven’t yet learnt any valuable lessons from the Westgate attacks,’ the extremists added, warning that Kenya was

‘inviting unprecedented levels of insecurity, bloodshed and destruction.’

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday said troops had been sent to Somalia to restore order to their neighbor and would remain there until this was achieved.

‘We will not be intimated, we will not be cowed,’ Kenyatta said. ‘We will stay there until they bring order to their nation.’

In reaction to Kenyan Defense Force’s (KDF) decision, al-Shabaab said it was ‘fully determined to intensify attacks inside Kenya until the last KDF boots exit Somali soil,’ saying it had the ‘right to defend our land and our people from enemy aggression.'” Source – Al Arabiya.

Libya: Gunmen Attack Russian Embassy In Tripoli After Russian Court Bans ‘Extremist’ Qur’an

Russia Today – “The Russian embassy in Tripoli, Libya, has come under fire and there were attempts to get into Russia’s diplomatic compound, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

‘There has been an incident in Tripoli tonight, in which there was shelling and attempts to enter the territory of the Russian Embassy in this country,’ Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Aleksandr Lukashevich told RT.

According to preliminary information, there are no reports of injuries among the staff.

The ITAR-TASS news agency’s witnesses said attackers tore down a Russian flag. The situation was soon brought under control and there are currently no intruders on Russia’s embassy territory. A similar attack on Russia’s Tripoli embassy took place in February 2012 when protesters stormed the compound, condemning Russian and Chinese decisions to block the UN resolution against Syria. No one was injured in that attack.

Nearly two years after Gaddafi was deposed and killed, Tripoli and other Libyan cities have been plagued by violence, lawlessness and factional infighting.

The presence of militiamen remains more visible than actual state security forces in the capital, while vast portions of the oil-producing desert country remain completely out of the central government’s control.” Read more.

A Sea Of Blood: Nearly 1,000 Iraqis Slaughtered In The Name Of ‘Allah’ In September Alone

By Sinan Salaheddin, Associated Press – “Nearly 1,000 Iraqis were killed in September, one of the highest monthly death tolls in years, the U.N. said Tuesday, giving a sombre figure that reflects the militants’ determination to rekindle large-scale sectarian conflict.

Iraq is going through its worst surge in violence since 2008, with near-daily militant attacks and relentless bombings blamed on hard-line Sunni insurgents. The surge followed a deadly crackdown by the Shiite-led government on a Sunni protest camp in northern Iraq in April. More than 5,000 people have been killed since then…

The report said the worst-affected part was the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, where 418 people were killed in September. It said 2,133 people were wounded in last month’s violence…

‘As terrorists continue to target Iraqis indiscriminately, I call upon all political leaders to strengthen their efforts to promote national dialogue and reconciliation,’ Nickolay Mladenov was quoted as saying in the report. ‘Political, religious and civil leaders as well as the security services must work together to end the bloodshed and ensure that all Iraqi citizens feel equally protected.’

Hours earlier, al-Qaida’s local franchise in Iraq claimed responsibility for Monday’s string of car bombings that mostly targeted Shiite neighbourhoods in Baghdad, killing 55 people.

The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant said the attacks were in retaliation to the ‘arrests, torturing and targeting of Sunnis’ by the Shiite-led government and vowed more attacks.

‘To Sunnis we say: The Islamic State, God willing, knows where, when and how to attack,’ the statement said. ‘The Mujahideen will not stay motionless.'” Read more.

Islamists Attack Ancient Christian Town Dubbed ‘The Beating Heart’ Of Christianity In Syria

Also, as a result of islamists’ attacks on September 27, churches were damaged in Yabrud and Hassake. Four rockets that hit the Catholic church of St. George in Yabrud caused serious damage to the dome, the catechization center and the pastoral centre.

By Tarek Fatah, Toronto Sun – “In the ongoing argument in Quebec about the proposal by the Parti Quebecois to outlaw all displays of religious symbols by public servants, there is general consensus the real issue is not the cross or the kippa, but the hijab and niqab.

Lost in the din of the debate were the words of a Muslim school teacher from Montreal who joined ‘Rassemblement pour la laicite,’ a pro-secularism group that backs the PQ plan.

Leila Bensalem, born in Algeria, while lauding the PQ initiative, expressed concern over the list of demands for religious accommodation at her school that keeps on growing, from halal food to separate gym classes for boys and girls.

Bensalem’s words echoed those of former Supreme Court of Canada judge Claire L’Heureux-Dube, who observed in a radio interview that in her travels abroad, ‘there are more uncovered faces in Pakistan and Morocco than there are here’ in Quebec.

What Bensalem and L’Heureux-Dube have observed is part of a larger movement among Islamists in the West to vigorously assert their presence as well as their separateness from non-Muslims, whom they consider the adversary, if not the divinely designated enemy.

If the hijab and niqab upsets them, imagine how Bensalem and L’Heureux-Dube would react if they saw what one Toronto-area mosque has adorned on its wall, in a huge, two-storey mural.

It’s part of a Quranic verse that has over centuries been a battle cry of jihadis and the armies of the Islamic world.

The mural, at the west end of Toronto’s Little India on Gerrard Street, has verse 13 of the Qur’an’s chapter 61 ‘Al-Saff’ (The Battle Array) painted in tasteful Arabic calligraphy.

It reads: ‘Help from Allah (is near) and a speedy victory (is assured).’

The words are innocuous and otherwise poetic.

Islamists will insist they are harmless, but it would be a falsehood to suggest the verse is not associated with doing battle with the infidel enemy. After all, these same words were once inscribed on the handles of Islamic swords and are today sung as Islamic battle songs by Jihadis.

Can we even begin to imagine the outcry from livid liberals and dhimmedia if Christian figures such as Billy Graham or the Pope continually called for the destruction of all mosques in the “Bible Belt” or in Europe? It would be unrelenting. But when one of the most important and influential leaders of the Muslim world stands up and calls for all churches in Arabia to be destroyed, Miley Cyrus is deemed more newsworthy …

Pravoslavie – “Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Abdulaziz Bin Abdullah has once again called for the destruction of all Churches on the Arabian Peninsula.

Bin Abdullah, head of the Ulema Council and the Standing Committee on Fatwas, made this statement after a presentation by the Kuwaiti parliamentarian Osama Al-Munawer of the bill that bans construction of new non-Muslim religious buildings in Kuwait.

The Mufti stated that, according to Islamic law, all churches in the region must be demolished; i.e., Islam is the only legal religion here. The words of Muhammad that ‘there cannot be two religions on the Arabian peninsula’ the head of the Sunni always interprets in favor of Islam.

Not long ago, owing to the consecration of a Catholic Church in United Arab Emirates, the local Christians expected the opening of negotiations concerning the construction of the first church in Saudi Arabia. At the present time, from 3 to 4 million immigrant Christians work in this Muslim country, according to various sources.

In June, Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, consecrated the new Church of St. Antonio in United Arab Emirates, near Dubai. The Church of St. Paul in Abu Dhabi is currently in the first stage of development. Competition Between Islamist Militants May Fuel Big Attacks

By Myra MacDonald, Reuters – “The assault on Kenya’s Westgate shopping mall has brought into sharp relief a pattern likely to complicate efforts to counter Islamist militants – competition among jihadis can increase the risk of a major attack.

As with the 2008 assault on the Indian city of Mumbai and this year’s raid on an Algerian desert gas plant, the attack in Nairobi by Somalia’s al Shabaab was preceded by in-fighting or loss of supporters to other militant groups.

This competition can initially make groups seem divided and weak, while actually making them more dangerous if a leader then feels compelled to mount a big attack to burnish his jihadi credentials – thereby bringing in fresh recruits and funding.

Western counter-terrorism officials have long been aware of the risk that intensive security measures adopted at home following the Sept 11, 2001 attacks on the United States are driving militants to target Westerners overseas.

But the impact of competition, sometimes caused by government efforts to curb militants, is only just beginning to be understood. It was thrown into sharp relief by the mall attack by al Shabaab, which killed 67 people.

Recognised by al Qaeda as an affiliate in 2012, the group had suffered from internal feuding as African Union forces, including troops from Kenya, drove them out of urban strongholds.

These rifts rose dramatically to the surface when the American-born Omar Hammami tweeted about what he said were attempts on his life by al Shabaab assassins sent by the group’s leader. He was reported to have been killed this month in Somalia.

Libya: Group Of Muslims Tie Up And Execute Christians For Refusing To Convert To Islam

Morning Star News – “A group of Muslims robbed two Egyptian Christians living in Libya, then tied up and shot them to death after the two Copts refused their demand to convert to Islam, relatives said.

On a rural road in Derna District in northeastern Libya on Wednesday (Sept. 25), a group of Muslims surrounded Waleed Saad Shaker, 25, and Nash’at Shenouda Ishaq, 27, demanded their belongings and started beating them. During the strong-arm robbery, the relatives said, the Muslims demanded that Shaker and Ishaq recite the shahada, the declaration of conversion to Islam. When the two Orthodox Coptic Christians refused, the group of Muslims tied them up and shot them.

Later that day, a shepherd found Shaker and Ishaq in the desert, and they were taken to Derna Hospital. Shaker was dead upon arrival at the hospital, according to a member of Ishaq’s family who requested anonymity. Gamel Saleem, a cousin of Shaker who saw his body, said the skull had been beaten in. Shaker’s death certificate identifies injuries to his head as the cause of death.

Ishaq initially survived the attack, and before he died he was able to give details about the assault to a relative, also resident in Libya. Escorting the body back to Upper Egypt for burial, the relative relayed the details to Ishaq’s family and the Shaker family.

No one has been arrested in connection with the killings. The attack marks the third time in two weeks that a Coptic Christian has been robbed and killed in Derna District, which along with the surrounding region is known as a hotbed of extremist Islamic activity.” Read more.
