Canada: Police Open Fire On Suspected Suicide Bomber Near Toronto

1297772839249_ORIGINALBy Chris Doucette, Toronto Sun – “Hours after the horrific terror attacks in Paris, a stand-off unfolded between police officers and a suspected suicide bomber in a Mississauga neighbourhood, the Toronto Sun has learned.

French officials were still counting their dead when Peel Regional Police officers ended a frightening confrontation by opening fire on the 26-year-old man at Golden Orchard Dr. and Grand Forks Rd. — near Bloor St. and Dixie Rd. — shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday.

In the aftermath of the shooting, police downplayed the incident saying only that the call involved ‘an emotionally disturbed person.’

But the presence of the service’s Explosive Disposal Unit and heavily armed Tactical officers at the scene suggested a far more serious threat was afoot.

A source, who asked not to be named, revealed to Sun on Monday that the bomb squad responded because the man in question was wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest and holding what looked like a triggering device.

It was not immediately known if the vest actually contained explosives.

But suicide bombers and gunmen killed 129 victims in Paris less than eight hours earlier. So police, who were on heightened alert, took the threat seriously.

Uniformed officers shot the suspected suicide bomber four times, the source said.

Fortunately, the shooting was not followed by an explosion.

The man, whose nationality was not immediately clear, was rushed to the trauma centre at St. Mike’s hospital in Toronto. He is expected to survive.

It happened just four days after the Paris attacks that targeted a stadium and several restaurants, killing more than 120 people Friday.

‘We had concrete evidence that someone wanted to set off an explosive device in the stadium,’ Hannover police chief Volker Kluwe told German TV. Referring to another bomb threat about an hour beforehand that turned out to be a false alarm, Kluwe said, ‘After the first object turned out to be harmless, we got a tip that had to be taken seriously that an attack was being planned.’

Investigators found a suspicious suitcase inside or near the stadium and a second suspicious device at the city’s central train station, German media and Sky News report. Police closed off part of the train station…

Members of the German government including Chancellor Angela Merkel had been scheduled to attend the match in Hannover to signal that Germany wouldn’t bow to terrorism in the wake of the Paris attacks.

CAIRO (Reuters) – Islamic State warned in a new video on Monday that countries taking part in air strikes against Syria would suffer the same fate as France, and threatened to attack in Washington.

The video, which appeared on a site used by Islamic State to post its messages, begins with news footage of the aftermath of Friday’s Paris shootings in which at least 129 people were killed.

The message to countries involved in what it called the “crusader campaign” was delivered by a man dressed in fatigues and a turban, and identified in subtitles as Al Ghareeb the Algerian.

“We say to the states that take part in the crusader campaign that, by God, you will have a day, God willing, like France’s and by God, as we struck France in the center of its abode in Paris, then we swear that we will strike America at its center in Washington,” the man said….

“Al Ghareeb the Algerian” also warned Europe in the video that more attacks were coming.

“I say to the European countries that we are coming, coming with booby traps and explosives, coming with explosive belts and (gun) silencers and you will be unable to stop us because today we are much stronger than before,” he said.

Apparently referring to international talks to end the Syrian war, another man identified in the video as Al Karrar the Iraqi tells French President Francois Hollande “we have decided to negotiate with you in the trenches and not in the hotels.”

That kind of negotiation is a type that Western leadership of today simply does not understand.” Source – Jihad Watch.

By Rukmini Callimachi, The New York Times – “The Islamic State claimed responsibility on Saturday for the catastrophic attacks in the French capital, calling them ‘the first of the storm’ and mocking France as a ‘capital of prostitution and obscenity,’ according to statements released in multiple languages on one of the terror group’s encrypted messaging accounts.

The remarks came in a communiqué published in Arabic, English and French on the Islamic State’s account on Telegram, a messaging platform, and then distributed via its supporters on Twitter, according to a transcript provided by the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks jihadist propaganda.

An earlier statement was released but was deemed unlikely to be authentic because of anomalies in the language, as well as an error in a date provided, according to experts on jihadist propaganda.

The statement was released on the same Telegram channel that was used to claim responsibility for the crash of a Russian jet over the Sinai Peninsula two weeks ago, killing 224 people. As in that case, it made the announcement in multiple languages and audio recordings.

President François Hollande of France said on Saturday that the Islamic State was responsible. Analysts said the nature of the attacks was more in keeping with actions of the Islamic State than with those of Al Qaeda, and the timing and extent of the celebration expressed online by the group’s supporters added weight to the claim.

AFP – “Two men who French police are seeking to trace in connection with the Paris attacks registered as refugees with Greek authorities earlier this year, the Greek police confirmed on Saturday.

French authorities had asked their Greek counterparts to check a passport and fingerprints of one man and the fingerprints of another who were thought to have registered in Greece, which is the main entry point into Europe for Syrian refugees.

At least one Syrian passport was found at the scene of the Stade de France attack.

Greek minister for citizen protection, Nikos Toskas, said in a statement that one of the men had been registered on the Greek island of Leros in October.

‘We confirm that the (Syrian) passport holder came through the Greek island of Leros on October 3 where he was registered under EU rules,’ said a statement issued by Toskas.” Read more.

Fox News – “Eight ISIS terrorists wielding AK-47s and wearing suicide belts carried out coordinated attacks at six sites around Paris Friday night, killing at least 127 people and wounding at least 180 others, France’s president said Saturday.

American citizens were among the injured and the U.S. government was working closely with French authorities to identify the victims, the State Department said Saturday morning. During the night, the State Department said it was seeking to establish the whereabouts of 70 U.S. citizens known to be in France, but had not received word that any Americans had been killed in the attacks Friday night.

‘The U.S. Embassy in Paris is working round the clock to assist Americans affected by this tragedy,’ deputy spokesperson Mark Toner said in a statement Saturday.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attacks and a Syrian passport was found on the body of suicide bomber at the Paris stadium. French authorities are urging any witnesses to come forward. One of the bombers was a young Frenchman previously flagged for links to Islamic extremism, police said. The man was among the attackers who blew himself up after a rampage and hostage-taking in a Paris concert hall, officials said.

Authorities have closed the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum and other top tourist sites in Paris until further notice. A Louvre spokeswoman said the museum opened as normal Saturday with enhanced security, but was ordered closed by the Culture Ministry after President Francois Hollande called for a national day of mourning. Isabelle Esnous, a spokeswoman for the Eiffel Tower, said the monument did not open as a security precaution. The Culture Ministry said ‘public cultural sites’ were closed in the Paris region Saturday, without specifying.

Speaking after an emergency security meeting to plan his government’s response, Hollande declared three days of national mourning and raised France’s security to its highest level. He described Friday’s attacks, which produced the worst bloodshed in Paris since World War II, as an ‘act of war.’ Hollande said ISIS was ‘a terrorist army … a jihadist army, against France, against the values that we defend everywhere in the world, against what we are: A free country that means something to the whole planet.’

By Pamela Geller, Breitbart – “Last week, I reported about the first American city in history to elect a Muslim majority City Council. Well, it didn’t take long for the Islamic supremacist aggression and hostility to surface — did it? It never does. Always conflict and strife.

A cell phone video, taken moments after Muslims received the word that they took over the city council, has surfaced of one of the organizers of the Muslim city council effort saying, ‘Today we show the Polish and everybody else…’ The town has a large but shrinking Polish community.

How ugly. How fast.

They won — are they incapable of being gracious? Don’t answer that. The message is clear: non-Muslims move or else.

Yet when the Muslims gained control of the city council last week, a local reporter, Will Jones, summarized how immigrants had ‘dramatically changed the face and culture of this community,’ and said exultantly, ‘Now, the Hamtramck City Council is going to reflect that diversity.’

What’s diverse about a Muslim majority? Is there anything less diverse and more oppressive than Islamic law? What Muslim countries are diverse? Muslims won’t even let Jews pray at the most holy of Jewish sites. Muslim countries under the sharia subjugate their religious minorities.

Non-Muslims should remember the lessons of Tower Hamlets. This London borough elected a Muslim mayor, Lutfur Rahman, who was ultimately removed from office by a judge ‘who ruled he had ‘cynically perverted’ the solidarity of Bangladeshi voters and made repeated claims of racism to silence critics.’ Expect the same in Hamtramck.

Cathie Lisinki-Gordon, a former councilmember and one of the candidates who lost her bid for the council last week, expressed surprise at Ibrahim Algahim’s supremacist language. ‘I’m shocked that he said that,’ she exclaimed. ‘I’m a very good friend of his. I cannot believe that he would ever profile any select group. Especially when his community has felt ostracized and profiled for many years.’

CAIR is calling the Dallas councilor “bigoted” and “extremist” and “Islamophobic” for simply highlighting what CAIR itself has already stated in the past, not to mention the Islamist predilections that many American Muslims themselves openly embrace in poll after poll. Time and again, however, when non-Muslims shed a bit of light on Islam’s dark side it always manages to somehow offend the already perpetually offended …

Omar Ahmad, Chairman of the Board, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR): “Islam isn’t in America to be equal to any other faith but to become dominant. The Quran, the Muslim book of scripture, should be the highest authority in America, and Islam the only accepted religion on Earth.”

By Saerom Yoo, Statesman Journal – “A Dallas city councilor posted Saturday on his personal and professional Facebook accounts that the Islamic faith is ‘pure evil’ and that Muslims pose a ‘grave threat to our culture, country and race.’

City Councilor Micky Garus made the comments in relation to a news article about Hamtramck, Michigan, which recently elected America’s first majority-Muslim city council. The comments were posted on both his personal profile and the ‘Micky Garus for Dallas City Council’ page.

‘Do you feel comfortable having this growing Muslim population in our country, knowing that their ultimate goal is too [sic] cleanse the earth of all nonbelievers?’ Garus wrote. ‘Are we okay allowing them to take over our local, state and eventually federal governments?’

He said that, ultimately, Muslims would try to implement Sharia law in the U.S.

Garus declined requests from the Statesman Journal for a phone interview.

A Lewis & Clark College professor who teaches Islamic studies said Garus’ claims were off target and unrealistic.

‘The idea that they’re trying to take over and put Sharia law in place is just profoundly unrealistic,’ Paul Powers said. ‘It’s not happening anywhere in America.’

He said the majority of Muslims in America see the freedom of religion as a precious value that they would not try to take away from others.

‘There is Muslim terrorism. That’s a real issue,’ Powers said. ‘But conflating that with the fear of Muslims in Detroit is worse than useless. If you want to focus on finding policies or military activities that will confront the Islamic State, that makes sense to me. But being afraid that Muslims who live down the street are trying to take over the country seems really off target.'” Read more.
