By Aaron Ross, Reuters – “Suspected Ugandan ADF-NALU rebels have killed between 50 and 80 people in attacks near the eastern Congolese town of Beni, slitting the throats of many of their victims, local sources and witnesses said on Friday.

In a statement, Civil Society of North Kivu, the province where Beni is situated, said the killings had occurred on Thursday evening about 10 km (6 miles) east of Beni airport, where U.N. peacekeepers, known as MONUSCO, are based.

‘We already saw 70 bodies. The authorities are searching for other bodies,’ said a priest who saw the massacre site.

The attackers were dressed in Congolese army fatigues and pretended to be soldiers before the killings and they slit many of their victims’ throats, said the priest, who declined to be named.

Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo and civil society groups have blamed a string of recent attacks in the east of the country on ADF, a secretive organisation formed in the 1990s to fight the Ugandan government, though some analysts have questioned this assessment.

North Kivu Governor Julien Paluku told Reuters nine bodies had arrived at the morgue in the nearby town of Oicha after the latest attacks, but said the toll could rise. Paluku also blamed the Ugandan rebels for the deaths.” Read more.

Bangkok Post – “Boko Haram gunmen killed 48 fish vendors in Nigeria’s restive Borno State, near the border with Chad, the head of the fish traders association told AFP on Sunday.

‘Scores of Boko Haram fighters blocked a route linking Nigeria with Chad near the fishing village of Doron Baga on the shores of Lake Chad on Thursday and killed a group of 48 fish traders‎ on their way to Chad to buy fish,’ Abubakar Gamandi said.

He said the insurgents set up a barricade at Dogon Fili, 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Doron Baga, and stopped a convoy of fish vendors around midday, slaughtering some of them and drowning others in the lake.

‘The Boko Haram gunmen slit the throats of some of the men and tied the hands and legs of the others before throwing them into the lake to drown,’ Gamandi told AFP by telephone from Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

Doron Baga, 180 kilometres from Maiduguri, is the base of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), comprising troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger fighting the Islamist group.

The MNJTF was formed in 1998 to fight trans-border crime but its mandate was expanded to tame the Boko Haram insurgency in the volatile region.

Gamandi claimed the assailants killed all of their victims without using their guns.

‘The attackers killed their victims silently without the use of the gun to avoid attracting attention from the multi-national troops,’ Gamandi said.

A military officer in Maiduguri confirmed the attack but said details were sketchy.

‘We heard of the attack near Doron Baga but we don’t have any details because the area falls under the operational jurisdiction of the MNJTF,’ the military officer said.

News of the attack was slow to emerge due to the destruction of mobile phone towers in the area by Boko Haram in previous attacks.” Read more.

By Patrick Goodenough, CNS News – “The number of people killed by terrorists worldwide in 2013 rose by 60 percent compared to the previous year – from 11,133 to 17,958 – with four Sunni Muslim extremist groups responsible for two-thirds of all fatalities, according to a comprehensive annual study.

Eighty-two percent of fatalities occurred in just five countries – Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria, although the number of countries that experienced more than 50 terror-related deaths also rose – to 24, compared with 15 the previous year.

Among the many findings in the new Global Terrorism Index, a project of the nonprofit Institute for Economics and Peace, is one that calls into question claims that poverty is a key driver of terrorism.

‘One of the most important findings in this report is that there is not a strong statistical link between poverty and terrorism,’ it says. ‘Many people who join terrorist groups in wealthy countries are well educated and come from middle class families.’

‘Other measures which didn’t correlate include life expectancy, mean years of schooling and economic factors such as GDP growth.’

Socio-economic, governance and attitudinal variables that showed the most significant correlation with terrorism were political stability, intergroup cohesion and legitimacy of the state.

The report also found that ‘religion’ as a driving ideology for terrorism has jumped significantly in the last five years, and accounts for most of the terror activity in the Middle East and North Africa, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The ISIS video featuring the French nationals calls on the Muslims in the Western countries to ‘poison’ the food and run over the Westerners with their cars.

In the seven-minute video, the French nationals burn their passports to show their defiance towards France, saying they will never come back to the country.

The high-production value video is subtitled in both Arabic and English. In the video one of the jihadis calls on the Muslims in France to ‘kill’ unbelievers in their own countries.

They have ‘cars and weapons available’, it is also possible to kill using poisoning water or food, a French ISIS jihadi says in the video.

The ISIS propaganda video opens with a masked fighter praising the Muslim ‘Brothers and Sisters’ for denouncing the Western ideas of democracy and nationalism and coming all the way to Syria and Iraq to live in the Islamic State.

The camera then shows a small group of ISIS fighters standing huddled around a fire. The French nationals are then seen smiling as they throw their passports into the fire.

One French masked fighter after burning his passport says, ‘You have oppressed us, fought our religion and insulted our Prophet (peace be upon him.) And today, we disbelieve in you and your passports, and if you come here we will fight you.’

The film then fades into another shot – wherein it shows the group sitting around three unmasked French men facing the camera. According the video, released by the ISIS propaganda unit Al Hayat Media Center, the men were …” Read more.

ISIS Commanders In Cave: True prophecy says their days are numbered. By Nour Malas, The Wall Street Journal (Via The Australian) – “REBELS of the moderate Free Syrian Army were mystified in August when rival Islamic State militants suddenly took aim at a seemingly unimportant string of villages in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo.

As the extremist group’s propaganda and fighters on the ground quickly made clear, what fuelled their offensive was one ­village in particular, Dabiq.

The village appears in sayings attributed to the Prophet Muham­mad as the site of an end-of-days drama in which a Muslim army is to defeat its ­enemies, ­including a foreign army.

The importance of this prophecy to Islamic State was evident in the video released on Sunday ­announcing the beheading of US aid worker Peter Kassig.

‘Here we are, burning the first American crusader in Dabiq, eagerly waiting for the remainder of your armies to arrive,’ says a militant in the video. The militant denounces US intervention in Iraq and vows to defeat what he calls ‘this final and last crusade’.

The capture of Dabiq set the stage for Islamic State’s wider ­battles spanning Syria and Iraq, which it portrays as pre-ordained in Islamic texts. That an ancient prophecy prompted a strategic battlefield shift some 1400 years after it was relayed shows how apocalyptic ideas have fuelled the rise of Islamic State.

Those ideas had helped attract recruits in the Middle East and beyond, said Syrian rebels who fight the group, analysts who study it, and a militant who has ­recently joined.

‘Dabiq is the most important village in all of Syria for them … especially the foreign fighters,’ explained a rebel who fought the advance of Islamic State forces on the village.

Until facing the militants on that frontline, the rebel said, he had thought their references to religious creeds were just slogans to fuel sectarian rage of the Syrian war — not motivation for battlefield actions. ‘They take it very ­seriously,’ the rebel said.

Asked if Islamic State played up religious prophecies to rally fervour for its cause from devout young Sunni Muslims, the recent recruit to the group said: ‘Sometimes, but it always works.'” Read more.

Both PA Chairman Abbas and Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Abbas’ advisor on religious affairs, have stressed that the PA leadership encourages Palestinians perform ‘Ribat’ in Jerusalem. Palestinian Media Watch has shown that Abbas recently stated that ‘we must all carry out Ribat.’ Al-Habbash confirmed that this is PA policy by saying, ‘Yes, we are inciting the people in Jerusalem to [perform] Ribat.'” Read more.
