FBI Director James Comey

Associated Press – “An al-Qaida cell in Syria that was targeted in American military airstrikes last month could still be working on a plan to attack the United States or its allies and is ‘looking to do it very, very soon,’ the head of the FBI says.

‘Given our visibility we know they’re serious people, bent on destruction,’ FBI Director James Comey said.

The Khorasan Group, a small but battle-hardened band of al-Qaida veterans from Afghanistan and Pakistan, was the target of U.S. strikes near Aleppo, Syria.

In an interview broadcast Sunday on CBS’ ’60 Minutes,’ Comey said the militants were ‘working and, you know, may still be working on an effort to attack the United States or our allies, and looking to do it very, very soon.’

Senior U.S. officials have not said whether the group’s plots have been disrupted.

Comey said the U.S. believes there are about a dozen Americans fighting alongside extremist groups in Syria. He said if someone has fought alongside the Islamic State militant group and tries to come back to the U.S., ‘we will track them very carefully.'” Read more.

A Taliban-linked terrorist organization in Pakistan had already pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. Now, in the name of the great and powerful “Allah” and his messenger of mayhem, the Taliban of Pakistan itself has, for all intents and purposes, pledged allegiance to the Islamic State as well without actually saying they’ve pledged allegiance. This Beast is growing and, as it does, Islamists all around the world are thinking to themselves, “Who can fight against it?” …

By Saud Mehsud and Maria Golovnina, Reuters – “The Pakistani Taliban declared allegiance to Islamic State on Saturday and ordered militants across the region to help the Middle Eastern jihadist group in its campaign to set up a global Islamic caliphate.

Islamic State, which controls swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, has been making inroads into South Asia, which has traditionally been dominated by local Taliban insurgencies against both the Pakistan and Afghanistan governments.

The announcement comes after a September move by al Qaeda chief, Ayman al-Zawahri, to name former Taliban commander Asim Umar as the ’emir’ of a new South Asia branch of the network that masterminded the 2001 attacks on the United States.

Although there is little evidence of a firm alliance yet between IS and al Qaeda-linked Taliban commanders, IS activists have been spotted recently in the Pakistani city of Peshawar distributing pamphlets praising the group.

IS flags have also been seen at street rallies in Indian-administered Kashmir. The trend has been of growing concern to global powers struggling to keep up with the fast-changing nature of the international Islamist insurgency.

In a message marking the Muslim holy festival of Eid al-Adha, the Pakistani Taliban said they fully supported IS goals.

‘Oh our brothers, we are proud of you in your victories. We are with you in your happiness and your sorrow,’ Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said in a statement sent to Reuters by email from an unknown location.

‘In these troubled days, we call for your patience and stability, especially now that all your enemies are united against you. Please put all your rivalries behind you …

‘All Muslims in the world have great expectations of you … We are with you, we will provide you with Mujahideen (fighters) and with every possible support.'” Read more.

‘Islamic State backs up force in Syria with threats, taunting calls,’ by Ayla Jean Yackley and Jonny Hogg,Reuters, October 3, 2014:

YUMURTALIK Turkey (Reuters) – Khaled Baki phones the number of a fellow Kurdish fighter and gets through to the Islamic State militants who say they beheaded her.

Baki’s friend, one of the Kurdish forces’ many female soldiers, disappeared as she fought to try and stop the Islamist militants’ push on Kobani, a predominantly Kurdish settlement in northern Syria close to the Turkish border.

More than 180,000 people have fled ahead of Islamic State’s advance, alarmed by accounts of the jihadists’ ruthless tactics – reports that have been fuelled by taunting phone messages from the militants themselves describing gruesome deaths meted out to Kurdish comrades and loved ones.

“We call her, someone else answers and says, ‘We cut off your friend’s head. Now we’re coming for your head,’” Baki said at Yumurtalik, just over the border from Kobani in Turkey.

“She was just 21 years old, and they cut off her head,” added Baki, a builder before he became a fighter. On Friday he called the Islamists back and spat insults down the line.

The Islamist fighters have pressed on in the face of U.S. air strikes on their positions. Kurdish fighters warned on Friday they now faced a massacre as the insurgents encircled Kobani with tanks and bombarded its outskirts with artillery fire.

Other Kurdish fighters have had calls from IS fighters vowing to take the town within days, using the mobile connections as a kind of psychological warfare. One said he was told: “We will be praying in your mosques by Eid,” an Islamic festival which starts on Saturday….

By Chris Pleasance, Mail Online – “British aid worker Alan Henning has been beheaded by ISIS fighter Jihadi John in a video posted online by the terror group.

Before he is killed, a gaunt and tired looking Mr Henning gives a short forced speech in which he blames his execution on Parliament’s decision to launch strikes against Islamic State in Iraq.

Mr Henning, a 47-year-old father-of-two, was kidnapped on Boxing Day last year as he delivered aid to Syrian refugees.

The clip, which is in English with Arabic subtitles, shows Jihadi John stepping forward to cut Mr Henning’s throat before the screen turns black, then shows his body lying on the desert floor.

Before he is killed, Mr Henning says: ‘I am Alan Henning. Because of our parliament’s decision to attack the Islamic state I as a member of the British public will now pay the price for that decision.’

In a thick London accent, the fighter adds: ‘The blood of David Haines was on your hands Cameron, Alan Henning will also be slaughtered but his blood is on the hands of the British parliament.’

In the footage, Mr Henning appears visibly thinner than in previous pictures, and has large dark rims underneath his eyes.

After Mr Henning is killed, the black-clad militant reappears with Peter Kassig, who is shown kneeling in the same position as Mr Henning with a caption showing his name.

Jihadi John then adds: ‘Obama you have started your aerial bombardment in Sham (Syria) which keeps on striking our people, so it’s only right we continue to strike the necks of your people.'” Read more.

Believes Muslims Have The Right To Be Extremists

By Euan Stretch, Mirror – “An Islamic extremist has warned there will be more Lee Rigby-style atrocities on the streets of the UK if the government passes new laws to clampdown on Muslim activists.

British-born Mizanur Rahman, 31, accused Home Secretary Theresa May of ‘playing with fire’ by planning to introduce new ‘anti-social behavour orders’ for Muslim extremists.

Last month Ms May announced she was drawing up new counter-terrorism measures to prevent young muslims in the UK being radicalised and joining groups like the Islamic State (IS).

But Mr Rahman said moves to silence activists could encourage terror acts in the UK like the murder of soldier Lee Rigby by Islamic converts Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale last year.

Mr Rahman, jailed for four years in 2007 for encouraging the murder of American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, gave the chilling warning in an interview with internet radio station FUBAR.

He said: ‘Theresa May is playing with fire because the fact is people like me who are willing to speak out regardless of the consequences are few.

‘Other people will look to me and say they don’t want their house to be raided and to have a voice they will have to use other means.

‘Rather they will take their own actions, like Michael Adebolajo, for example.

‘The British police are saying that kind of attack is likely to happen again, and the threat level keeps rising.

‘It certainly looks like it is going that way, and things like this announcement doesn’t help, it makes things worse.'” Read more.

By Catherine Herridge, FOX News – “An Army intelligence bulletin is warning U.S. military personnel to be vigilant after Islamic State militants called on supporters to scour social media for addresses of their family members – and to ‘show up [at their homes] and slaughter them.’

The assessment, obtained by Fox News, came from the Army Threat Integration Center which issues early warnings of criminal and terrorist threats to Army posts worldwide.

The advisory warns military personnel and their families about the Islamic State, or ISIS, calling on supporters to target their homes.

While there is no independent intelligence to corroborate the ISIS threats, the bulletin recommends more than a dozen precautions to military personnel to protect their homes — and their online profiles.

One section cites a jihadist tweet calling on lone offenders to use the ‘yellow pages’ and social media to identify the addresses of military families, and to ‘show up [at their homes] and slaughter them.’

A military source familiar with the four-page document said the warnings are taken seriously because increasing the costs of security is a deliberate and strategic goal for Al Qaeda senior leadership – though the Islamic State has split with Al Qaeda.

The Army said in a written statement that protection levels at installations ‘have not changed.’

‘This document is a reminder to stay vigilant,’ the Army said …” Read more.

By Aya Batrawy, CTV News – “As a child, Osama al-Bar would walk from his home past Islam’s holiest site, the Kaaba, to the market of spice and fabric merchants where his father owned a store. At that time, Mecca was so small, pilgrims could sit at the cube-shaped Kaaba and look out at the serene desert mountains where the Prophet Muhammad once walked.

Now the market and the homes are gone. Monumental luxury hotel towers crowd around the Grand Mosque where the Kaaba is located, dwarfing it. Steep rocky hills overlooking the mosque have been levelled and are now covered with cranes building more towers in row after row.

‘My father and all the people who lived in Mecca wouldn’t recognize it,’ said al-Bar, who is now Mecca’s mayor.

As Muslims from around the world stream into Mecca for the annual hajj pilgrimage this week, they come to a city undergoing the biggest transformation in its history.

Decades ago, this was a low-built city of centuries-old neighbourhoods. Over the years, it saw piecemeal renewal projects. But in the mid-2000s, the kingdom launched its most ambitious overhaul ever with a series of mega-projects that, though incomplete, have already reshaped Mecca.

Old neighbourhoods have been erased for hotel towers and malls built right up to the edge of the Grand Mosque. Historic sites significant for Islam have been demolished. Next to the Kaaba soars the world’s third tallest skyscraper, topped by a gigantic clock, which is splashed with colored lights at night.

‘It’s not Mecca. It’s Mecca-hattan. This tower and the lights in it are like Vegas,’ said Sami Angawi, an architect who spent his life studying hajj and is one of the most outspoken critics of the changes. ‘The truth of the history of Mecca is wiped out … with bulldozers and dynamite. Is this development?’

Critics complain the result is stripping the holy city of its spirituality. They also say it is robbing the hajj of its more than 1,400-year-old message that all Muslims, rich or poor, are equal before God as they perform the rites meant to cleanse them of sin, starting and ending by circling the Kaaba seven times.

Mecca is revered by hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide. They face the Kaaba every day in their prayers. The Grand Mosque is one of the few places in the world where Muslims of all stripes gather — Sunnis and Shiites, secular Muslims, mystics and hard-liners.

Overseeing Mecca is also a key source of prestige for Saudi Arabia’s monarchy. The past two kings — the current one, Abdullah, and his predecessor, Fahd — have adopted the further title of ‘custodian of the two holy mosques’ to boost their status, referring to Mecca’s Grand Mosque and Muhammad’s mosque in nearby Medina.

Now Mecca is being moulded to a particularly Saudi vision that bolsters the rule of the Al Saud royal family.

Two forces shape that vision. One is raw, petrodollar-fueled capitalism. Mecca’s planners are largely catering to wealthier pilgrims by focusing on construction of five-star hotels, surrounding the Kaaba in marble-sheathed luxury. Nearby, pilgrims can shop at international chains, including a Paris Hilton store and a gender-segregated Starbucks.

France 24 – “As a teen, Salim Benghalem smoked weed and went out clubbing. Now, the Frenchman is an Islamic State (IS) jihadist wanted by Washington, which accuses him of carrying out executions for the extremist group.

The US State Department last week singled him out as one of 10 wanted ‘foreign terrorist fighters’, describing him as ‘a Syria-based French extremist and ISIL member’ — using an alternative name for IS — as well as an executioner.

But this description has left friends and relatives of the 34-year-old, who grew up in Cachan near Paris, baffled.

On condition of anonymity, they acknowledge he is a Muslim who travelled to Syria to pursue ‘an ideal of justice’, but ‘definitely not an executioner.’

Described as a happy, ‘slightly puny’ man, Benghalem is the fourth of seven children. He got on with his family but suddenly, unexpectedly left his hometown in 2012, leaving behind a wife and two young kids.

He waited four days before contacting his relatives, telling them he was in Syria and had joined the Islamic State group, which controls large parts of the war-torn country as well as swathes of Iraq.

He gives regular news via Skype or Viber, calling every 10 to 15 days from Internet cafes near the northern Syrian city of Aleppo. His relatives say they sometimes see armed fighters in the background.

‘He didn’t belong in France. He found himself over there,’ a person close to him said, wishing to remain anonymous, adding that his task in Syria is to hand out fines on behalf of IS …” Read more.

By Ian Hanchett, Breitbart – “A member of the mosque attended by Alton Nolen, the man who beheaded a woman and stabbed another in Oklahoma recently, said that the mosque taught members to wage jihad against non-believers on Wednesday’s broadcast of ‘The Kelly File’ on the Fox News Channel.

The man, who spoke on condition of anonymity, and was identified as ‘Noor,’ reported ‘to the public, the mosque will not promote terrorism or any kind of radical acts, but when they’re among friends and congregants only, they will promote the true teachings of Islam which include the offer to non-Muslims the choice rather that you must convert, live under Islamic rule, or be fought against. Jihad, for the sake of Allah.’

‘Noor’ outlined some of the radical teachings of the mosque, stating ‘I was specifically told, for example, concerning suicide bombings in Israel that we do support these acts because as it was told to me this is the only weapon the Palestinians have, but do not mention this to the media because they would not understand.’ And ‘beheadings were discussed [as] the means of which you confront the infidel as it is related to in the Koran that when you meet the unbelievers you should smite at their necks.’

‘Noor’ added that two congregants, one of which he said was now an Imam, ‘told me that if Osama Bin Laden came to their door, they would invite him in and protect him, because he was a brother Muslim and we must protect him from those that don’t believe,’ and that Suhaib Webb, the current Imam of the Islamic Society of Boston, taught him about the convert, live under Islamic rule, or be fought against choice that Muslims must offer non-believers.

He further reported that two converts to Islam who worshipped at the mosque took him to shoot weapons at targets that they said would represent George W. Bush and Ariel Sharon.” Source – Breitbart.

Location: The militants are understood to have had their advance halted by airstrikes yesterday at Ameriyat Al-Falluja yesterday – a small city about 18 miles south of Fallujah and 40 miles west of Baghdad. By John Hall, Mail Online – “Fierce fighting has been reported on the outskirts of Baghdad where ISIS militants are attempting to seize control of the Iraqi capital – despite ongoing Western airstrikes against the terror group.

The fighting is taking place just one mile to the west of the city, with government forces desperately trying to hold off the militants, who allegedly killed up to 1,000 soldiers during clashes yesterday.

ISIS have held a number of towns and villages close to the Iraqi capital since earlier in the year, when government troops melted away following a lightning advance in the west of the country – enabling the terrorist group to seize further swaths of territory for their so-called caliphate.

Reports that ISIS militants are now just one mile from Baghdad came from the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East – an organisation supporting the work of Canon Andrew White, vicar of the city’s St George’s Church, the only Anglican church in Iraq.

In a message posted on Facebook, the group said: ‘The Islamic State are now less than 2km away from entering Baghdad. They said it could never happen and now it almost has.” Read more.
