France 24 – “North Korea has placed two of its intermediate range missiles on mobile launchers and hidden them on the east coast of the country, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported on Friday, citing intelligence sources in South Korea.

The report could not be confirmed, but may be intended to demonstrate a threat by the North to either Japan or to U.S. bases on Guam. The North has threatened to attack bases on Guam if the United States launches a strike on it.

‘Early this week, the North has moved two Musudan missiles on the train and placed them on mobile launchers,’ Yonhap cited a senior military official familiar with the matter as saying.

South Korea’s Defence Ministry declined to comment on the report.

There were unconfirmed media reports that the North had moved missiles to the east coast on Thursday, although it was not clear what kind of missiles had been deployed.

Speculation has centred on two kinds of missiles neither of which is known to have been tested.

One was the so-called Musudan missile which South Korea’s Defence Ministry estimates has a range of up to 3,000 km (1,865 miles), the other is called the KN-08, which is believed to be an inter-continental ballistic missile, which is again untested.” Read more.

Pentagon Activates Missile Defenses For Expected North Korean Missile Test – “The Pentagon has placed its national missile defense shield on heightened alert amid reports that North Korea is preparing a missile flight test, according to defense officials. The higher alert status includes moving two Aegis-equipped missile defense ships to waters near North Korea and readying long-range ground-based interceptors in Alaska and California, said officials familiar with the status.” Read more.

U.S. Troops Stand ‘Poised to Respond’ at North Korea Border – “The United States says it stands ‘poised to respond’ at the border of North and South Korea, where U.S. troops are on high alert. ‘They have ratcheted up their bellicose, dangerous rhetoric and some of the actions they’ve taken over the last few weeks present a real and clear danger,’ Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said. The U.S. is sending a missile battery to Guam and two guided missile destroyers are on the border of South Korea, joining Navy warships already poised to shoot down an incoming missile. U.S. warplanes, including fighter jets, U-2 spy planes and an A-10 attack jet, are in the South Korean skies today as part of a massive military exercise overseen by the U.S. lieutenant general who brought in F-22 stealth fighters as well. Both Russia and China are said to be extremely worried about the escalating situation and are preparing for a possible nuclear conflagration. Rep. Peter King, meanwhile, is warning that the United States may resort to a preemptive strike against North Korea if there was “solid evidence” that Kim Jon Un planned to attack the U.S. or South Korea …

The Telegraph – “NORTH Korea has declared it has given ‘final approval’ for a nuclear attack on the United States.

AFP is reporting the declaration, which came minutes after the United States announced it would deploy a land-based missile defence system to Guam to counter North Korean threats of a nuclear strike.

The United States Department of Defense has issued a statement saying a truck-mounted launcher and radar system will be moved to Guam in next few weeks.

The missile system joins two destroyers deployed to the region in the past few days. The ships are also capable of intercepting intercontinental ballistic missile.

North Korea has been making increasingly hysterical threats against South Korea and the United States in recent weeks. However, the United States Department of Defense says it has not detected any unusual military movements or activity around missile sites within the rogue country.

North Korea’s threats and recent actions represent a ‘real and clear danger’ to the United States as well as its allies South Korea and Japan, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said.” Read more.

US Defense Secretary Cites ‘Growing Threat’ From North Korean Nukes – “Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is calling North Korea’s development of nuclear weapons a ‘growing threat’ to the U.S. and its allies. In a telephone call Tuesday evening to Chinese Defense Minister Chang Wanquan, Hagel cited North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles and said Washington and Beijing should continue to cooperate on those problems.” Read more.

North Korea: Not Too Bright

By Mark Willacy, ABC News – “North Korea has put its strategic rocket units on combat-ready status, with orders to prepare for possible strikes against the United States mainland and Hawaii.

But many analysts doubt that Pyongyang even has the capability to hit the US.

The North Korean regime is enraged that the US has recently flown B-52 bombers over the Korean Peninsula, and has accused Washington of preparing an invasion.

In response, the North Korean army command has ordered all artillery troops and strategic rocket units to be ready for combat.

A statement from the Korean People’s Army supreme command ordered rocket units to be prepared to attack ‘all US military bases in the Asia-Pacific region, including the US mainland, Hawaii and Guam’.

Despite its successful long-range rocket launch in December, most experts believe North Korea is years from developing a genuine inter-continental ballistic missile that could strike the continental United States.

Hawaii and Guam would also be outside the range of its medium-range missiles, which would be capable, however, of striking US military bases in South Korea and Japan.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has spent the past few weeks touring frontline military units, monitoring live fire artillery drills and making inflammatory speeches about wiping out the enemy.

Sabre-rattling and displays of brinkmanship are nothing new in the region, but there are concerns that the current situation is so volatile that one accidental step could escalate into serious conflict.” Read more.
