By YOEL GOLDMAN and PHILIP PODOLSKY, Times of Israel – “Israel’s security forces in Jerusalem and the West Bank have been placed on continued high alert following a day of violent demonstrations by Palestinian activists on Friday.

‘The continuing riots clearly show the terrorists’ motivation to carry out attacks,’ a source at the Central Command told Channel 10 News. He added that the security establishment had received many warnings of planned terrorist attacks, although the majority of the threats were of ‘spontaneous’ attacks, such as stabbings. Soldiers have been instructed to maintain extra vigilance at checkpoints after two Palestinians were arrested Friday carrying knives.

Senior PLO official Hanan Ashrawi told Channel 10 News that, for now, things are under control, but that ‘if something happens to any of the Palestinian prisoners, especially the hunger strikers, it will fuel the public’s anger and lead to acts of retribution.’

Four Palestinian security prisoners who are hunger-striking in Ofer Prison were said to have been transferred to hospital on Friday.

Some Israeli experts believe the Palestinian Authority is using the issue of the hunger strikers to try to foster a First Intifada-style popular uprising. A Hamas spokesman in Gaza on Friday said he hoped the upsurge in riots represented the start of a third intifada that would ‘liberate’ the Palestinians from Israeli occupation.

Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom called the incidents of the last few days ‘a test for (Palestinian Authority President] Mahmoud Abbas.’

‘If he is giving the green light to all these riots, what will happen if and when we sign a peace agreement? He has to prove that he can maintain control,’ Shalom said.

Channel 2 News defense analyst Roni Daniel said that US President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to the region would be a key factor in determining the future course of the protests. ‘If the visit fails to produce gains for the Palestinians, we can expect to see things escalate,’ he cautioned.” Read more.

According to Israel Radio, US President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit next month is also being cited as a reason for these new violent Palestinian protests. Seems like everything Obama does (or doesn’t do, depending on how you look at it) always somehow manages to inspire those of the Islamic faith to demonstrate to the world just how serious they truly are when it comes to their Allah, his Qur’an, and the “perfect man” responsible for all of it …

By Yoel Goldman and Stuart Winer, The Times of Israel – “Palestinian protests in Jerusalem and the West Bank turned violent on Friday, with demonstrators throwing stones at Israeli security forces at several locations.

At the Temple Mount in the capital’s Old City, Palestinians exiting Friday prayers hurled stones at security forces stationed near the Mughrabi Gate. Israeli forces stormed the area, entering the Temple Mount compound, and used stun grenades to disperse the protesters.

‘Our forces at the Mughrabi Gate [leading up to the Temple Mount compound] were hit by hails of stones,’ said Jerusalem District police chief Yossi Pariente. He said one policeman was lightly injured.

In Hebron, dozens of Palestinians attacked security forces with stones in the city’s Jewish quarter. A Border Police officer was lightly injured when hit by a brick hurled by protesters. He received initial medical treatment on the scene before being transferred to a hospital.

Hundreds of protesters also gathered at the Beitunia military checkpoint near the Ofer Prison outside Ramallah, where several Palestinian inmates are on a hunger strike. Dozens of them threw stones at IDF and Border Police stationed at the post.

In Nabi Saleh, also near Ramallah, security forces used live fire to disperse protesters.

Palestinian sources claimed dozens of people were lightly injured by tear-gas inhalation at the various demonstrations.

Israeli security forces had been placed on high alert ahead of the anticipated protests, following escalating demonstrations in recent days.

By GEORGE JAHN, Associated Press – “In a disheartening signal to world powers at upcoming Iran talks, Tehran has started installing high-tech machines at its main uranium enrichment site that are capable of accelerating production of reactor fuel and — with further upgrading — the core of nuclear warheads, diplomats said Wednesday.

Iran already announced last week that it had begun mounting the new enriching centrifuges, but one diplomat said at the time that the announcement was premature with only a ‘small number’ on site and not yet installed.

Diplomats told The Associated Press on Wednesday, however, that installation was now well on its way, with inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency seeing close to 100 or more machines mounted when they toured the site a few days ago. Depending on experts’ estimates, the new-generation centrifuges can enrich uranium three to five times faster than Iran’s present working model.

The Islamic Republic insists it is not working on a nuclear weapons program, but rather is enriching uranium only to make reactor fuel and for scientific and medical purposes — as allowed by international law.” Read more.

Ya Libnan – “Three Hezbollah members were killed on Wednesday in an attack by the Islamist al-Nusra Front in a border town between Lebanon and Syria, the Turkish state-run Anadolu agency reported…

‘The attack targeted a Hezbollah patrol in (the Bekaa border town of) Zeita, killing three of the party’s members,’ informed sources told Anadolu.

The sources revealed: ‘The party had an agreement with the Free Syria Army to neutralize these towns from the ongoing Syrian conflict’. ‘But Hezbollah has since the attack decided to deploy members in eight frontier villages’…

Hezbollah has announced that its ranks are now on full alert in eight Lebanese-Syrian border towns following an attack that was carried out by Syria’s Al-Nusra Front against a Hezbollah patrol, Turkish Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday.

Anadolu also quoted its sources as saying that ‘thirteen Al-Nusra Front members attacked a Hezbollah patrol in the Lebanese southern town of Zeita which led to the death of three of the Shiite group’s members.’

Hezbollah has been supporting Syrian President Bashar Assad ever since the uprising began in March 2011, even though the group supported revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Bahrain. The group says it is backing the Syrian regime because of its support for the anti-Israel resistance movements in Lebanon and Palestine and because it is willing to implement political reforms.

By Chana Ya’ar, INN – “The Syrian opposition fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad has added another target to its hit list: the Lebanon-based, Iranian-funded Hizbullah terrorist organization.

According to a report published Wednesday in The Washington Post, the Free Syrian Army threatened Tuesday to attack Hizbullah guerrilla fighters not only in Syria, but also on their home territory – Lebanon.

The threat comes just a few days after Hizbullah terrorists were involved in attacking three Syrian villages near the border between the two countries, around the Syrian border town of Qusayr.

‘If the Hizbullah shelling on the Syrian land, on the villages and unarmed civilians, from inside the Lebanese land does not stop in the next 48 hours from the release of this statement, we will take matters in our own hands to response to the source of the shooting and stop it inside Lebanese territory, the Free Syrian Army warned.” Read more.

Flashback: Hezbollah Considering Military Coup If Assad Falls – “Hezbollah’s leadership is considering the possibility of taking control of Beirut and effectively carrying out a military coup in Lebanon should the current Syrian regime fall, the al-Arabia network reported Tuesday. According to the report, Hezbollah members have expressed concerns over the escalation of the civil uprising in Syria, which could lead to the fall of Bashar Assad’s regime. The Syrian president is an ally of the Lebanese Shiite group. Sources close to Hezbollah noted that it was due to those concerns that the Hezbollah leadership was examining various scenarios – including a ‘broad maneuver on the ground,’ similar to the takeover of Beirut in May 2008. However, the current plans apparently include a much more extensive maneuver which may expand to a military coup. ‘As soon as Hezbollah will sense that the collapse of Assad’s regime is imminent, armed cells will quickly begin operating to seize control of Beirut’s eastern and western parts,’ one of the sources told al-Arabia.” Read more.

World Tribune – “All intelligence indicators received and processed by GIS/Defense & Foreign Affairs show that the nuclear weapon tested by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) on Feb. 12, was paid for, and intended for, the Islamic Republic of Iran.

It was, in essence, a test of an Iranian nuclear weapon, and involved scientific as well as financial involvement by the Iranian government.

Moreover, the weapon was not — as some media reporting has averred — a ‘step toward’ a North Korean or Iranian nuclear weapons capability: it was in fact a demonstration of a common North Korean and Iranian operationally-ready nuclear weapon.

Just as North Korean officials indicated long before the first North Korean nuclear weapons demonstration on Oct. 9, 2006, that the North Koreans had effectively tested its weapons and proven their design in the May 1998 Chagai-I series of tests by Pakistan, so the North Korean tests — particularly the February 12, 2013, test, were to prove Iranian weapon design efficacy. However, given the commonality of the payload ‘nipple’ on the Iranian and North Korean missiles, it seems likely that the nuclear weapon design tested would be the baseline system for both countries.

North Korea on Feb. 12, 2013, at 03.57hrs GMT detonated its third nuclear explosion, a miniaturized warhead, at an underground site at Punggye-ri. Even by Feb. 14, 2013, there was no detectable aerial evidence of the test, so well protected was the test site.

However, seismic data indicated — through two different methods — that the warhead yield was at least double that of the second nuclear test on May 25, 2009, and was either six to seven kiloton yield or 10 kiloton yield, and was from a warhead sufficiently small to fit into the nose compartment already in service on the North Korea’s Taepo-Dong 2 and Iran’s Shihab 3D intermediate-range ballistic missiles.” Read more.

According to the report Sunday, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh-Mahabadi very rarely leaves Iranian soil due to fear that Israel’s Mossad will make an attempt on his life, following an alleged pattern of previous assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists. Fakhrizadeh-Mahabadi is currently pursuing technology that would enable his country to assemble a nuclear warhead compact enough to be fitted to the ballistic missile technology in its possession, Western intelligence sources reportedly said.” Read more.

By Robert Spencer, Frontpage Mag – “It was a momentous occasion: the first visit to Egypt by a President of Iran since the founding of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Egypt Tuesday to an enthusiastic welcome from Egypt’s President Mohammed Morsi and top Egyptian officials. Yet underneath the kisses and expressions of mutual regard, the visit revealed yet again how deep the divisions are in the Islamic world – and why Sunnis and Shi’ites may only be able to unite on the basis of their mutual hatred of Israel.

Then-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said of the Islamic world in January 2007:

‘There’s still a tendency to see these things in Sunni-Shia terms. But the Middle East is going to have to overcome that.’ Rice’s statement, of course, was staggeringly naïve, and manifested a deep ignorance of the region, as well as of Islam. No one should be surprised that six years later, Sunnis and Shias still haven’t ‘overcome’ their tendency to ‘see these things in Sunni-Shia terms,’ and chances are that in six hundred more years, they still will not have done so, for the Sunni-Shi’ite divide goes back to the earliest days of Islam, and yet in fourteen hundred years has not burnt itself out, but still rages today as fiercely as ever.

And so it was that as Sunnis and Shias war against each other in Iraq and Pakistan, the Shi’ite President of Iran touched down in Sunni Cairo and was almost immediately scolded by Ahmed al-Tayeb, the Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar University, the foremost institution in Sunni Islam, for Iran’s meddling in Bahrain. Almost seventy percent of Bahrainis are Shias, but the king and the ruling elites are Sunnis, and in Bahrain’s version of the ‘Arab Spring,’ the ‘pro-democracy’ protesters were Shias who wanted either closer ties with Iran or for Bahrain to be annexed outright by the Islamic Republic, in line with Iran’s claim that it is actually an Iranian province.

But al-Tayeb told Ahmadinejad to back off, and to recognize that Bahrain was a ‘sisterly Arab nation’ – i.e., within the Sunni Arab, not the Shi’ite Persian domain. And according to a senior al-Azhar cleric, Hassan al-Shafai, al-Tayeb and Ahmadinejad quickly began squabbling about Sunni-Shi’ite theological disagreements. His assessment of the meeting was far from positive: ‘There ensued some misunderstandings on certain issues that could have an effect on the cultural, political and social climate of both countries. The issues were such that the grand sheikh saw that the meeting … did not serve the desired purpose.’
