AFP – “PESHAWAR (Oct 13, 2012): A suicide bomber on Saturday blew up a car at a crowded market in a northwestern Pakistani tribal town, killing at least 16 people and wounding 30 others, officials said.

The blast ripped through the main market in Darra Adam Khel near to a local anti-insurgent peace committee office, which officials said was the target of the attack.

‘The death toll has risen to 16 and 30 others were wounded,’ local government official Fakhar-ud-Din told AFP.

He said it was not immediately clear how many peace committee members were killed or wounded because the bombing occurred in a crowded street and many shoppers were victims.

Information minister for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Mian Iftikhar Hussain said: ‘It was a suicide attack and the target was the local peace committee.’

Two other officials confirmed the bombing and the death toll and said some of the wounded were shifted to other cities for treatment as local health facilities were not sufficient.

Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the officials said.

The peace committee comprised a breakaway group of former militants who ditched their Taliban colleagues and formed a militia supporting local elders and government efforts against militancy, a local intelligence official said.

Semi-autonomous Darra Adam Khel lies between the northwestern towns of Peshawar and Kohat and has experienced several suicide attacks and bombings blamed on Taliban militants.

Taliban on Tuesday shot schoolgirl rights activist Malala Yousafzai, 14, in the head as she boarded a school bus in the former Taliban stronghold of Swat. Authorities offered a reward of more than $100,000 for the capture of her attackers.” Source – The Sun Daily.

Fox News – “CAIRO – The leader of Al Qaeda is encouraging Muslims to wage holy war against the United States and Israel in response to a film that insulted Islam’s Prophet Muhammad.

Ayman al-Zawahri, in an audio message released by Al Qaeda’s media arm As-Sahab early Saturday, claimed Washington allowed the film’s production under the pretext of freedom of expression, but added that ‘this freedom did not prevent them from torturing Muslim prisoners.’

The crudely-produced amateur film, ‘Innocence of Muslims,’ which was posted to YouTube and other online forums, was made by an Egyptian-born American citizen. The video sparked violence in the Middle East, including in Egypt and Libya, where Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three others were killed on Sept. 11 during an attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi. Dozens more have also been killed in violence related to the film.

In Saturday’s audio recording, Al-Zawahri praised ‘honest and zealous’ demonstrators who breached the U.S Embassy in Cairo and attackers who stormed the U.S. ’embassy’ in Benghazi.

Separately, officials said this week that Al Qaeda is rebuilding in Iraq and has established training camps for insurgents in the nation’s western deserts as the extremist group seizes on regional instability. Iraq has seen an increase in Al Qaeda attacks over the last 10 weeks, and officials believe most of the fighters are former prisoners who have either escaped from jail or were released by Iraqi authorities for lack of evidence after the U.S. military withdrawal last December. Many are believed to be Saudi or from Sunni-dominated Gulf states.

During the war and its aftermath, U.S. forces, joined by allied Sunni groups and later by Iraqi counterterror forces, managed to beat back Al Qaeda’s Iraqi branch. But now, Iraqi and U.S. officials say, the insurgent group has more than doubled in numbers from a year ago — from about 1,000 to 2,500 fighters. An average of 140 attacks each week across Iraq, up from 75 attacks each week earlier this year, according to Pentagon data.

By Soeren Kern, Gatestone Institute – “A successful push for independence in the Spanish autonomous region of Catalonia would lead to the establishment of a country with the third-largest percentage of Muslims in Western Europe, just behind France and Belgium, and far ahead of Britain and Germany.

An independent Catalonia, with its capital in Barcelona, would also be home to the largest concentration of radical Islamists in Europe; it would emerge as ground-zero for Salafi-Jihadism on the continent and become one of the top incubators for Islamist terrorism in the West…

On September 25, Mas announced a snap election in Catalonia (to be held on November 25), which is being viewed as a plebiscite to gauge popular support for his pro-independence platform. The Catalan parliament also approved a resolution to hold a non-binding referendum on secession once the new legislature is installed.

The ruling parties of Catalonia have also sought guidance from Brussels on the legality of secession from Spain, requesting a ‘roadmap’ for membership of the European Union, along with the use of the euro, as an independent state.

Catalonia has 7.5 million inhabitants, including an estimated 450,000 Muslims, who account for 6% of the total Catalan population. In some Catalan towns and cities, the Muslim population now reaches up to 40% of the population.

As a result of mass immigration from Muslim countries, which began in the 1980s, Catalonia has emerged as ‘a major Mediterranean center for radical Islamists,’ and the United States has even proposed setting up an intelligence hub at the U.S. Consulate in Barcelona to counter the growing threat, according to American diplomatic cables that were obtained by Wikileaks and published by the Madrid-based El País newspaper.

A five-page cable, dated October 2, 2007, for example, describes the link between mass immigration to Catalonia and the rise of radical Islamism in the region.

The document, which is classified ‘secret’ and apparently authored by then-Ambassador Eduardo Aguirre, states: ‘Heavy immigration — both legal and illegal — from North Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria) and Southeast Asia (Pakistan and Bangladesh) has made Catalonia a magnet for terrorist recruiters. … The Spanish National Police estimates that there may be upwards of 60,000 Pakistanis living in Barcelona and the surrounding area; the vast majority are male, unmarried or unaccompanied, and without legal documentation. There are even more such immigrants from North Africa. … They live on the edges of Spanish society, they do not speak the language, they are often unemployed, and they have very few places to practice their religion with dignity. … Individually, these circumstances would provide fertile ground for terrorist recruitment; taken together, the threat is clear.’…

Salafism is a branch of radical Islam that seeks to forcibly re-establish an Islamic empire (Caliphate) across the Middle East, North Africa and Spain, which Salafists view as a Muslim state that must be reconquered for Islam.” Read more.

AFP – “The supreme guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, from which Egypt’s President Mohamed Morsi emanated, called on Thursday for a jihad (holy war) to liberate Jerusalem from Israeli rule.

‘Jerusalem is Islamic … and nobody is entitled to make concessions’ on the Holy City, said Sheikh Mohammed Badie in his weekly message to supporters.

‘The jihad for the recovery of Jerusalem is a duty for all Muslims,’ he said, stressing that the liberation of the Holy City’will not be done through negotiations or at the United Nations.’

Israel, which signed a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, has watched with concern as Islamists were catapulted to the forefront of politics following a popular uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak last year.

Morsi has repeatedly said he would respect international treaties signed by Cairo. But his former movement has also said there is room to revise the accords, without objecting to them in principle.” Source – France24.

Instead, he called upon Hamas to declare that it was created to eliminate the state of Israel.

‘The deterioration of the Palestinian cause occurred in a series of steps. ‘[Yet] none of this was sufficient for [Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor] Lieberman to defend ‘Abbas from harm. “The arena to which the PLO has been dragged is very clear. This forces Hamas and the resistance factions to go back [to the beginning] and to avoid pragmatist [measures], as well as the trap of [trying to] win over global public opinion by suggesting the possibility of agreeing to a state within the 1967 borders in return for an extended hudna. This was believed to be the gateway to acceptance by the West, [but, in reality,] it was the first step down a new [slippery] slope that might later be [justified] with brilliant political arguments or even pragmatist religious rulings.

‘In order to fix this [situation], Hamas must refrain from honoring any agreements that the PLO has signed with Israel. The PLO is a dead thing that cannot [even] be embalmed. Hamas’s incorporation into the PLO following its embalming, or following a reform in [the PLO’s] ranks, will constitute recognition of the agreements that the PLO has signed with Israel. The national reconciliation in no way means agreeing to a political plan that includes abiding by the Oslo Accords, and political reconciliation does not mean reconciling [in order to act] against the homeland.

‘We must launch a corrective national vision, in which we distinguish between plans to manage daily life in the homeland and plans to manage the conflict. The PLO abandoned [the latter] and never took them up again, just as it withdrew from the circle of resistance and never returned to it.

‘Hamas must declare that it was formed to eliminate the state of Israel, and that Israel is an entity that must disappear. [Hamas] should declare that its political, military, and social plan is the liberation of all the land by means of resistance, and that the West bears the burden of [responsibility for] this aberrant entity [Israel]. This plan is Hamas’ gateway to the Arab and Islamic world. We must present this to the West, so that it decides to stop backing Israel and realizes that it has made a mistake and must rectify it.'” Source – MEMRI.

By JESSICA SIMEONE – “A terror attack sponsored by Iran is an ongoing concern for the NYPD, Commissioner Ray Kelly revealed yesterday.

‘We’ve been concerned about Iran for a while, and I think the history of those events throughout the world since January give us cause for concern,’ Kelly said during an anti-terror conference called NYPD SHIELD.

Kelly also said that a possible conflict between Iran and Israel is a particular area of concern, given New York City’s large Jewish population.

One issue is the potential for a retaliation attack on New York City by Iran and Hezbollah, said NYPD Lt. Kevin Yorke of the Intelligence Division.

‘Within the last year, we’ve seen a worldwide increase in incidents involving the stockpiling of explosives, the surveillance of targets, and a number of very significant plots and attacks,’ Yorke said.

That increase in activity is in direct relation to Iran’s nuclear-weapons program and the tension surrounding it, Yorke said.

‘Obviously if there’s any action involving Israel and Iran we have to be very cognizant of the potential of retaliation here in New York City,’ Kelly said.

The Express Tribune – “SWAT: The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which attacked National Award Peace winner Malala Yousafzai on Tuesday have said that they will target her again if she survives because she was a ‘secular-minded lady’.

A TTP spokesperson told The Express Tribune that this was a warning for all youngsters who were involved in similar activites and added that they will be targeted if they do not stop.

Malala was injured along with two other women when Taliban gunmen opened fire on a bus in Swat.

Yousufzai, who studies at Khushal Public School, was on her way home when the vehicle came under attack on Haji Baba Road. One of the other injured has been identified as Shazia and sources say the third was a teacher.

Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said his group was behind the shooting.

‘She was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and she was calling President Obama her idol,’ Ehsan said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

‘She was young but she was promoting Western culture in Pashtun areas,’ he said, referring the main ethnic group in northwest Pakistan and southern and eastern Afghanistan.

DPO Swat Rasool Shah said that a search operation has been initiated in the area and a number of suspects have been arrested.

Malala was shifted to Saidu Sharif Medical Complex in Mingora immediately after the incident and later she was moved to Peshawar in an Army helicopter.

Doctors at the Saidu Sharif Medical Complex said that Malala was out of danger after the bullet penetrated her skull but missed her brain.” Read more.
