North Korea Deploys New Long-Range Rocket Launchers: Newspaper

02/28/2012 Leave a comment

“SEOUL (Kyodo) — North Korea has deployed an improved, longer-range version of its 240 mm multiple rocket launcher, a South Korean newspaper reported Tuesday, citing military sources.

The Chosun Ilbo said North Korea is expected to unveil the rocket launchers during a parade to mark the centennial of founder Kim Il Sung’s birthday April 15.

North Korea spent several years trying to improve the rocket launchers and has now completed the work. To test the upgraded version, it reportedly imported 300 mm shells from Russia and test-fired them for years off the west coast.

As for the range of the new rocket launchers, some experts speculate that they have a range of more than 120 kilometers. That would put the entire Seoul metropolitan area, including U.S. bases in surrounding provinces, within their range. The old models have a range of 60 km that puts Seoul and Chuncheon in Gangwon Province within their range when fired from the front-line Demilitarized Zone.

But others say their range is less than 100 km. Most rocket launchers with a diameter of less 240 mm have a range of between 60 and 70 km. To strike a target more than 100 km away, they need a precision strike system using inertial navigation or GPS, and there is no evidence the North’s rocket launchers have such capabilities yet.

A source was quoted as saying, ‘North Korea is probably trying to threaten South Korea and the U.S. by making the rocket launchers public and use them as a propaganda material at home and abroad on Kim Il Sung’s centennial.'” Source – Mainichi Japan.

Pakistani Muslims Employ ‘Blasphemy’ Threat in Land Grab Attempt From Christian Family

“SIALKOT, Pakistan, February 27 (CDN) — Tensions are still high in a village near here following Muslims’ attempt to seize land from a Christian family by threatening to accuse them of ‘blasphemy.’

What began on Feb. 19 as a quarrel over a pigeon between Christian and Muslim youths at Nawa Pind Sabu Mohal village, in Sialkot’s Pasroor area in northeast Punjab Province, grew into an occasion to jail some Christians in the overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim country, the Christians said.

Gulshan Masih, 20, told Compass that his younger brother, Saif Masih, 18, had quarreled with a young Muslim over a pigeon that led to about a half dozen boys from each group charging into a fistfight and later pelting each other with stones. With the Muslims throwing bricks and stones from inside a mosque at the young Christian men’s homes, the skirmish ended when an elderly female relative of the Christians was wounded in their courtyard, Gulshan Masih said.

A few hours later, police officers arrived and took his father, 55-year-old Bashir Masih, 55, and 50-year-old uncle, Pervaiz Masih, into custody.

‘The Muslims had accused us of desecrating the mosque by throwing stones at it,’ Gulshan Masih said. ‘My father and uncle were not even involved in the fight, yet they were taken into custody on false charges.’

Muslim villagers have tried to drive Christians from the village on similarly petty pretexts, he said.

‘We own land and cattle, and this may be one of the reasons why the Muslims keep on picking fights with us over minor issues,’ Masih said, recalling how relatives Saleem and Rasheed Masih were arrested on a false blasphemy charge in 1999 after a quarrel stemming from a Muslim ice cream vendor refusing to serve Saleem Masih from the same bowl used by Muslims. Rasheed Masih was not even present at the scene of the quarrel, Gulshan Masih said, but was also charged.” Read more.

Syria: Christians Afraid To Go Out At Night Ask For Prayer, Armed Mob Attacks Monastery

02/28/2012 2 comments

“In the wake of a year of protests and violence, the volatile situation in Syria has brought great suffering to the entire population. Syrian Christians say their greatest need right now is prayer, according to Open Doors, an international ministry supporting persecuted Christians and religious freedom around the world.

The danger has prompted many churches across the country to meet only in daytime, many only on Sundays. On Fridays, the weekly Islamic day of assembly, many Christian schools now close. Because of rampant killing, theft and kidnapping of children, some parents have stopped sending their children to school. Syria also suffers a lack of fuel and electricity, an economy in shambles and few jobs.

‘Christians’ plights vary by place,’ said Dr. Carl Moeller, president and CEO of Open Doors USA. ‘Damascus Christians seem to have the fewest difficulties; in contrast, many Homs believers have fled what has become a war zone.’

Some Christians want to stay; others desperately seek to emigrate, said Moeller. Many say they simply cannot flee.

‘Many believers tell us that Syria is where they belong and will remain, even if that means dying there,’ he said.

More than 80 percent of Christians have fled Homs, the city where fighting is the worst. Looters have invaded the homes of those who have fled. At least one evangelical church has been attacked. Those who remain have limited means of safe transportation. Few attend church services.” Read more.

Syria: Armed Attack On Catholic Monastery – “For the first time in the history of the conflict in Syria, an armed attack has been made on a Catholic monastery, reported Vatican Radio on Saturday. About 30 armed men wearing masks attacked the monastery, founded by Jesuit from Italy Paolo dell’Olio. Attackers demanded money and weapons. According to the abbot, no one was killed or wounded. ‘However, it is strange that the attackers sought weapons in a monastery, known as a center of dialogue and reconciliation between Muslims and Christians,’ – said the monk. According to the Catholic Archbishop of Damascus, maronite Samir Nassar, the situation in the country is spiraling out of control as the armed opposition spreads its influence to different regions of the state.” Read more.

Report: Internet Radicalizes US Muslims Quickly, Example of Recent Convert to Islam is ‘A Harbinger, Not an Outlier’

02/27/2012 Leave a comment

By Shaun Waterman, The Washington Times – “Young American Muslims can become radicalized online very quickly and with few warning signs, becoming potential terrorists before federal agencies can identify them, a new congressional report warned Monday.

Zachary Chester, a 22-year-old Virginia man now serving 25 years for terrorism crimes, took less than two years to transform ‘from an average American kid to a hardened supporter of terrorist organizations,’ according to a study of his case by staff from the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

The bipartisan report analyzes his prolific online writing and correspondence with staff investigators after his guilty plea October 2010 to three terrorism-related felonies. The charges included attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization through his efforts to join al-Shabab, the al Qaeda affiliate in Somalia.

‘Chester represents a growing breed of young Americans who have such comfort and facility with social media that they can self-radicalize to violent Islamist extremism in an accelerated time period, compared to more traditional routes to radicalization,’ the report said.

Chester, who converted to Islam after graduating high school in 2008, is ‘a harbinger, not an outlier,’ according to the report.” Read more.

Flashback: ‘What Are You Waiting For?’ – Al-Qaeda Calls on US Muslims to Buy Guns and Start Killing Americans – “If an event were to occur in the world that would be eschatologically pivotal for Muslims this would be sure to awaken any radical elements within the Muslim population, regardless of where they live, and even radicalize some of those who were previously considered ‘moderate’. The arrival of al Mahdi, for example, could become the ‘triggering event’ that has the potential to precipitate a sudden surge in Islamic terrorism all over the globe. If we are complacent into believing that any such scenario could never happen or is highly unlikely, we don’t need to look far before we come face to face with the sobering reality that Islamic terrorist cells are, today, already forming within our own borders.” Read more.

Iran: Authorities Arresting Christians in Multiple Cities, Including Ailing 78-Year Old Woman in Esfahan

Mohabat News – “The security authorities of Iran have taken action against the growth of Christianity and house church movement in Iran and have arrested many believers in different cities of Iran. In this connection, a 78 year old Christian lady has also been arrested in Esfahan.

According to reporters of Iranian Christian news agency, Mohabat News, Ms. Giti Hakimpour, a Christian minister who resides in Esfahan was arrested in her flat by security authorities.

The security authorities raided Ms. Hakimpour’s home at 6:00 a.m. on February 22, 2012, at the same time as the attack on Mr. Hekmat Salimi’s home. They arrested and transferred her to an unknown location.

Ms. Hakimpour, who is 78 years old, is a member and minister of St. Luke’s church in Esfahan. She was living on her own in an apartment. Witnesses saw both police and private cars parking down below her flat from 6 in the morning.

Knowledgeable sources told Mohabat News, the intelligence officers initially interrogated her in her flat. Then they arrested her, thoroughly searched her apartment and confiscated some of her personal belongings.

Eyewitnesses said the officers were there for three hours until 9:00 a.m. and then took Ms. Hakimpour with them. No information is available concerning her whereabouts and health condition at the time of publishing this post. She has no relatives inside Iran. However, the news of her arrest has caused a wave of anxiety among her relatives living outside Iran. The Iranian Christian community calls on Iranian authorities to release her and take measures to exonerate her of any charges.

It has been reported that she had not been in a good health the night before her arrest and was using some medicines because of the knee replacement surgery she had undergone. Also the doctor had ordered that she should not be stressed and that she needs to be under special care. So, holding her in custody without basic facilities could cause her difficulties. The responsibility of life and any possible health problems for this elderly lady rest directly on Iranian authorities.” Read more.

Israeli Intelligence Reports Warn of Increased Palestinian Violence, Third Intifada in 2012

02/26/2012 Leave a comment

By Barak Ravid – “The stalled peace process and instability in the Middle East are liable to push the Palestinians in the West Bank to turn increasingly violent toward Israel, the Foreign Ministry said in its annual intelligence assessment.

The assessment also states that a potential Israeli military operation in Gaza would generate a severe response from Egypt.

The ministry’s intelligence report, which was presented a few weeks ago to the ministers in the security cabinet, runs more than 50 pages. Parts of the report were obtained by Haaretz, including the sections relating to the Palestinians, ties with Jordan and Egypt and the Iranian nuclear issue.

The assessment puts forth a scenario of a third intifada breaking out during 2012, either as a result of a Palestinian Authority leadership decision or as a popular uprising influenced by the wave of revolutions in the Arab world.” Read more.

New Intifada Gains Upper Hand on IDF Restraint – “Violence by Arabs from Haifa to Be’er Sheva has grown into new full-blown Intifada, but so far the IDF is holding fire despite deaths in the recent past in the same circumstances . The increasing violence is forcing the IDF to heighten its presence on the highways, and terrorists, already used to de facto control, may escalate their attacks. Dozens of daily rock-throwing attacks on highways in Judea and Samaria were recorded the past week, causing massive damage to cars, light injuries and near death.” Read more.

Qassam Rockets Fall on Southern Israel – “A new day, a new week, and Gaza terrorists began their near-daily routine of firing short-range Qassam rockets at southern Israel on schedule as usual Sunday morning… The Color Red incoming rocket alert siren, which activates the moment a missile is sensed, gives people in the region about 15 seconds in which to drop whatever they’re doing and race for cover. It is impossible to know when the next one will be launched, nor where it will land and whether or not will explode. Because Qassams are relatively ‘primitive’ and cannot be narrowly aimed, they are especially deadly as the trajectory cannot be predicted – thus an entire region is placed on alert each time one is launched.” Read more.

Iran Reaffirms Defense Ties with Lebanon, Says Its ‘Ready and Willing’ to Wipe Israel Off the Map

AP – “TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with Lebanon’s visiting defense minister on Sunday, telling him that Beirut and Tehran should work toward unity to confront the west and Israel, the country’s official news agency reported.

The visit comes amid an apparent move by Tehran to strengthen its regional ties, as it faces both pressure from the West over its nuclear program and the possible loss of a key ally, Syria’s President Bashar Assad.

Ahmadinejad told visiting Lebanese Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn to ‘resist the plots’ of ‘domination-seeking powers,’ IRNA said.

Ghosn is a member of the Christian political party Marada, which is allied with Tehran’s main partner in Lebanon, the Shiite Hezbollah movement. Marada and Hezbollah are also closely linked to Syria’s embattled President Bashar Assad, who is traditionally a major power-broker in Lebanon but faces an uprising against his rule.

‘Friendships and brotherhood should be improved,’ Ahmedinejad said. He claimed Israel would carry ‘a massacre against all nations of the region’ if it could. ‘Therefore, we should support and stand by each other more than before.'” Read more.

Al-Qaida in Iraq Warns of Looming War Against the ‘Despicable’ Shiites

02/26/2012 Leave a comment

If a marriage of convenience means that Iran can still use Al Qaeda against arch-enemy Israel, they may overlook a bit of trouble in paradise …

By LARA JAKES – BAGHDAD (AP) — A spokesman for al-Qaida in Iraq said Friday that a Sunni Muslim war against Shiites in Iraq is inevitable and threatened relentless waves of attacks like the one a day earlier that killed at least 55 people.

The statement by Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, spokesman for the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq, tap into fears in Iraq and abroad about the country’s future stability and the government’s ability to protect its citizens following the withdrawal of the last U.S. troops in December.

Despite deadly assaults against the Shiite-led government’s security forces and Shiite pilgrims, there has been no indication that Iraq is returning to the sectarian bloodshed of 2006 and 2007 that pushed the nation to the brink of civil war. But Iraqis are increasingly frustrated with the government’s failure to prevent attacks that continue to kill scores of Iraqis every month.

In the latest attack, a series of bombings and shootings across the country on Thursday killed 55 and wounded more than 225. Al-Qaida in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In a 33-minute audio statement posted on an extremist website, al-Adnani warned of an impending ‘stage of real confrontation and war against the despicable (Shiites).’

‘The war of the Sunnis with the (Shiites) is a religious war, a holy war of faith,’ he said, according to a translation of the remarks provided by the SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks Islamist extremist messages. ‘There is no way out of it and there is no swerving from it.'” Read more.

A Match Made In Allah’s Valhalla: Sunni Al Qaeda’s Big Fat Shiite Iranian Wedding – “Last week, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper described the relationship between Iran and al Qaeda as a ‘longstanding … marriage.’ But you had to listen carefully to hear him say that. ‘Iran has harbored al Qaeda leaders, facilitators,’ Clapper told a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee. They have been ‘under house arrest conditions. [Iran’s rulers] have had this sort of standoff arrangement with al Qaeda, allowing [al-Qaeda] to exist [inside Iran], but not to foment any operations directly from Iran, because they’re very sensitive about, ‘Hey, we might come after them there as well.’… So there has been this longstanding, as I say, kind of, shotgun marriage, or marriage of convenience. I think, probably, the Iranians may think that they might use, perhaps, al Qaeda in the future as a surrogate or proxy.’” Read more.

Nigeria: At Least 3 Killed After Suicide Car Bomber Attacks Major Church in Jos, 38 Wounded

02/26/2012 Leave a comment

By AHMED SAKA – “JOS, Nigeria (AP) — A suicide car bomber detonated his explosives outside a major church Sunday, killing three people and wounding 38 others in a restive central Nigerian city that has seen hundreds die in religious and ethnic violence.

The explosion struck the main headquarters of the Church of Christ in Nigeria during its early morning service, Plateau state spokesman Pam Ayuba said. The attack killed a woman, and a father and his child near the explosion, Ayuba said.

The bomber apparently ran down the woman while racing his car toward the church compound, said Mark Lipdo, a coordinator for a Christian group called the Stefanos Foundation. The blast left shattered glass all over the church compound, as an angry crowd of youths began smashing the windows of cars passing by the scene, witnesses said.

Emergency officials took 38 people to hospitals for treatment, said Yushau Shuaib, a spokesman with Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency.

In a statement, President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the attack.

‘Those who seek to divide us by fear and terror will not succeed,’ the statement read. ‘The indiscriminate bombing of Christians and Muslims is a threat to all peace-loving Nigerians.’

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, though a radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram has launched increasingly bloody attacks across Nigeria, including attacks on churches. A Christmas Day bombing of a Catholic church that left at least 44 dead was claimed by the sect in Madalla, a town just outside the country’s capital of Abuja.

The group also claimed responsibility for bomb attacks on Christmas Eve that struck Jos, killing as many as 80 people.” Read more.

Gaza: Hamas Ditches Assad, Backs Syria Revolt

02/25/2012 Leave a comment

Reuters – “Leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas turned publicly against their long-time ally President Bashar Assad of Syria on Friday, endorsing the revolt aimed at overthrowing his dynastic rule.

The policy shift deprives Assad of one of his few remaining Sunni Muslim supporters in the Arab world and deepens his international isolation. It was announced in Hamas speeches at Friday prayers in Cairo and a rally in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas went public after nearly a year of equivocating as Assad’s army, largely led by fellow members of the president’s Alawite sect, has crushed mainly Sunni protesters and rebels.

‘The Syrian revolution is an Arab revolution.’

Contemporary political rivalries have exacerbated tensions that date back centuries between Sunnis – the vast majority of Arabs – and Shi’ites, who form substantial Arab populations, notably in Lebanon and Iraq, and who dominate in non-Arab Iran.

Hamas and Hezbollah, confronting Israel on its southwestern and northern borders, have long had a strategic alliance against Israel, despite opposing positions on the sectarian divide. Both have fought wars with Israel in the past six years.

But as the Sunni-Shi’ite split in the Middle East deepens, Hamas appears to have cast its lot with the powerful, Egypt-based Sunni Islamists of the Muslim Brotherhood, whose star has been in the ascendant since the Arab Spring revolts last year.” Read more.

Two More American Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan Over Qur’an Burning Fury

Revelation 6:8, “And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.”

Another update on this seemingly never-ending saga. In Revelation 6:8 John describes what we’ve come to call the “fourth horseman of the Apocalypse” as being “chlōros, literally translated as “green”. Green is the official color of Islam and is believed to be Mohammed’s favoriteThe “fourth horseman” is described as having power over 1/4th of the earth. I don’t believe that it is a mere coincidence that Islam today has dominion over 1/4th of the earth. John describes the “fourth horseman” as having the power to “kill with sword.” Islam is spread through Jihad, the “Sword of Islam.”  The “fourth horseman” also kills with hunger/famine. Islamists would rather see children starve to death than see them receive aid from the “Christian West.” The “fourth horseman” kills “with death.” The love of death, suicide missions and martyrdom for “Allah” permeates Islamic culture, so much that they even openly declare to “love death more than you love life.” Lastly, Revelation 6:8 describes the “fourth horseman” as killing with “the beasts of the earth.” The Greek word “thērion” is, I believe, being used metaphorically to refer to “savage”, “brutal” and “bestial” men. And the reaction of the Muslim world upon hearing of the “desecration” of their holy book is, yet again, proving to be nothing short of all-out savagery …

By Hamid Shalizi – “(Reuters) – Two Americans believed to be a U.S. colonel and major were shot dead in Afghanistan’s interior ministry on Saturday, security sources said, while rage gripped the country for a fifth day over the burning of the Muslim holy book at a NATO base.

A spokeswoman for NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed two of their servicemen had been shot dead in central Kabul by an individual who turned his weapon on them. She declined to say if the killer was a member of the Afghan military or police.

Afghanistan’s Taliban movement claimed responsibility for the shootings, which it said were in retaliation for the desecration of the Korans at Bagram airfield.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in an e-mailed statement to the media that four high-ranking Americans had been killed, though the Islamist group often exaggerate and inflate claims of casualties.

The Koran burnings underscored the deep cultural divide that still exists more than 10 years after U.S. troops invaded to oust the Taliban and has deepened public mistrust of Western troops struggling to stabilize the country.

An Afghan security source said the shooting of the two Americans in the Interior Ministry could be connected to the burning of the Korans…

Muslims consider the Koran to be the literal word of God and treat each copy with deep reverence. Desecration is considered one of the worst forms of blasphemy.

Four Afghans were shot dead by Afghan security forces as demonstrators came out to the streets on Saturday, with an attempt by protesters to bombard a U.N. compound in the north.

Despite an apology from U.S. President Barack Obama and a call for restraint from Afghan leader Hamid Karzai, thousands have taken to the streets. Twelve people were killed and dozens wounded on Friday, the bloodiest day yet in demonstrations.

On Thursday, an Afghan national army soldier joined the protests and gunned down two American soldiers.” Read more.

Middle East War Coming in March?

02/25/2012 Leave a comment

By AARON KLEIN – “TEL AVIV – NATO countries are strongly considering the possibility of an international deployment to Syria if the Syrian opposition does not make major advances in the next few weeks, according to informed Middle Eastern diplomatic and security officials.

Egyptian security officials, meanwhile, outlined what they said was large scale international backing for the rebels attacking the embattled regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad – including arms and training from the U.S., Turkey, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.

Several knowledgeable Egyptian and Arab security officials claimed the U.S., Turkey and Jordan were running a training base for the Syrian rebels in the Jordanian town of Safawi in the country’s northern desert region.

The security officials also claimed Saudi Arabia was sending weapons to the rebels via surrogates, including through Druze and Christian leaders in Lebanon such as Druze leader Walid Jumblatt; Saudi-Lebanese billionaire Saad Hariri, who recently served as Lebanon’s prime minister; and senior Lebanese opposition leader Samir Farid Geagea.

Syrian sources claimed to WND that Jordan’s fingerprints can be seen on the opposition forces entering the country. They claimed that just this week they shot dead 15 armed smugglers coming into the country from Jordan and that Jordanian forces helped to cover the smugglers’ tracks on the Jordanian side of the border. They said the incident did not make it to the news media.

While Turkey, the U.S. and Arab countries may be arming the opposition, Russia has been directly aiding Assad’s forces on the ground, according to informed Middle Eastern diplomatic and security officials.

In one recent incident, when opposition forces successfully destroyed a Russian-provided tank in the rebel stronghold of Homs using an anti-tank missile, the officials said that Russian technicians took fragments of the missile to study the components in a Russian lab to determine the exact missile used.

WND previously reported Russian military experts have been inside Syria helping Assad’s regime face down the months-long insurgency.
