‘We’re on the Verge of Extinction’: Mob Attacks on Iraqi Christian Businesses Raise Security Concerns
This story is finally making its way into a couple of media outlets, but still nowhere near the attention it deserves …
By Judson Berger – “A rash of attacks on Christian-owned businesses in northern Iraq has raised troubling questions about the future safety of the country’s shrinking Christian community, particularly as U.S. forces withdraw completely from the nation they’ve refereed since 2003.
The attacks, which have received little international attention, raged through northern cities following a sermon last Friday by a local mullah. Video purportedly from the riots posted online shows mobs burning and wrecking businesses, which included liquor stores, hotels and hair salons.
Yonadam Kanna, a Christian member of the Iraqi parliament and secretary-general of the Assyrian Democratic Movement, confirmed to FoxNews.com that dozens of shops — many Christian owned — were attacked across multiple cities.
‘The extremists prepared themselves to attack on more locations … but they were prevented by local police and security in addition to some guards from the villages,’ Kanna said in an email.
The incident underscored the perilous circumstance the country’s dwindling Christian population finds itself in, as U.S. forces withdraw and the surrounding region takes what could be an Islamist turn, if early results in the Egypt elections are any gauge.
‘The Iraqi Christians … are living in fear,’ said U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., who is pushing for the creation of a special religious freedom envoy in the region. ‘Now with the forces leaving … I think the Iraqi Christians are going to go through a very, very difficult time.’
Urging the U.S. government to do more to draw attention to security concerns, Wolf said he ‘would not be surprised’ if Iraqi Christians continue to face these kinds of threats.
The latest attacks began in the northern city of Zakho, and spread to several other cities…
Juliana Taimoorazy, founder of the Iraqi Christian Relief Council, said the Christians — who over the past decade have fled to surrounding countries to escape the violence — are faced with limited options today. She said they simply can’t go to Iran, Jordan can’t handle more refugees and Syria is no longer safe.
‘They don’t know what tomorrow or the next day will bring, but really there’s nowhere else to go,’ she said.
She questioned the security for Christians in northern Iraq, claiming the Kurdish regional government there did not initially intervene to stop the recent violence.
She also said it’s ‘disturbing’ the U.S. government has not spoken up on the latest attacks.
‘We’re on the verge of extinction,’ she said.” Read more.
Islamists in Iraq to Christians: ‘If Anyone Decides to Reopen His Store, We Will Kill Him’ – “The Islamist campaign against all things contrary to Sharia Law continues, and to drive home just how dead serious they are about preventing Christians in Zakho and elsewhere from buying and selling products, notes have been left for Christians informing them that if they reopen their stores, they will be killed …” Read more.
Details About Lost Drone Add to Speculation About Covert U.S. War in Iran
By Jennifer Griffin -“When the Iranians captured a downed U.S. Sentinel drone intact, the U.S. lost more than just the technology inside their high-tech spycraft. A secret program to gather intelligence about Iran’s nuclear sites was revealed and the U.S. had to admit they were running spy missions from an air base in Western Afghanistan.
It’s the latest in a series of mysterious events, including explosions and assassinations targeting Iran’s nuclear scientists and its ballistic missile program.
Some argue that the covert war against Iran’s nuclear program is under way, but it began more than a year ago.
First, there was a cyber attack largely believed to have been carried out by the Israelis with U.S. help targeting the uranium enrichment facility at Natanz in June 2010. More than 1,000 centrifuges were destroyed by the Stuxnet worm.
Then there were the dozen or so mysterious explosions at the homes of Iran’s nuclear scientists, including the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, who was wounded by a car bomb in November 2010.
Last month, there was an explosion at a secret missile base near Tehran, and the head of Iran’s long-range missile program was killed along with 17 top members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Alireza Jafarzadeh, author of ‘The Iranian Threat’ who first revealed intelligence that Iran had a secret uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, says there are indications Iran was testing a new solid fuel rocket. ‘As they were doing the final preparations, fully loaded with a warhead and the fuel, it exploded. And with it, it took the entire crew of the missile team, including the top commander and the top missile expert,’ Jafarzadeh said.
Two weeks later on November 30, 2011, a blast at a uranium enrichment plant in Isfahan raised more suspicions that a covert war was already under way.
Satellite images obtained by Fox News and the Institute for Science and International Security, or ISIS, from August 27, 2011 show buildings that have been near the plant for 15 years. However, after the November blast the buildings appear to have disappeared.” Read more.
Pakistan: Christian Couple Tortured by Police, Resist Pressure to Convert to Islam
“Salma Emmanuel and her husband, Rashid Emmanuel, were tortured by Pakistani police over a three-day period after Salma, a maid, was falsely accused of stealing from her employer, according to news reports.
‘I begged them for mercy, pleading that I am five months pregnant, but they continued their merciless onslaught,’ said Salma, referring to the policewomen who tortured her. ‘They continued to try to force me to admit to the crime, even threatening that they would kill my baby, but I refused to confess a false allegation.’
‘I had complete faith in Jesus and trusted that He would rescue me and Emmanuel from this great problem,’ she said. ‘It was our faith that kept us going.’
‘The police beat me up mercilessly,’ her husband added. ‘A policeman offered to remove the theft charges against me if I was willing to renounce Christianity and convert to Islam. I told him that no matter what happens, I will not renounce my faith, nor would I confess the false charges made against us.’
Following their detention, both Salma and Rashid lost their jobs, and Salma is at risk of losing her unborn child.” Source – CatholicCulture.org.
Pakistan: Christian Girl, 18, Shot and Killed For Refusing to Convert to Islam and Marry Muslim Man
“Islamabad: December 5, 2011. (PCP) A Christian girl named Mariah Manisha killed by a Muslim on defying enforced conversion and Islamic marriage was put on sale under Islamic Sharia law of ‘Compensation’ by rich influential family of killer and Islamic clerics in Pakistan.
A Catholic Christian girl named Mariah aged 18, was allegedly kidnapped on gunpoint by a Muslim named Mohammad Arif Gujjar on November 27, 2011, when she was on way to get drinking water with her mother.
Mohammad Arif Gujjar accompanied with his Muslim friends dragged Mariah Bibi in front of her mother shouting loudly ‘You are a beautiful girl and must convert to Islam to be my wife’ which Mariah Bibi denied and cried for help.
Mohammad Arif Gujjar became furious on denial of Mariah Bibi to accept Islam and shot her killing instantly and forced her mother Razia Bibi to run away to save her life.
Mariah Bibi was living in a village of Samundari with her five siblings, mother Razia Bibi and Father Manisha Masih.
The killer Mohammad Arif was arrested and local Muslim elders visited Manisha Masih to condole death of Mariah Bibi to express solidarity with grieved Christian family.
The Catholic Diocese of Faisalabad immediately called Mariah Bibi ‘Martyr of Faith’ and forward it to Vatican for inclusion in list of Martyrs.
The Christian media called Maria Bibi to be ‘Martyr Maria Goretti of Pakistan’ to remember her martyrdom.” Read more.
UK: Please Pray for House of Lords Debate on Christians in the Middle East
Urgent prayer request from Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, International Director of Barnabas Fund
“On Friday (9 December), the UK House of Lords is holding an important and timely debate, led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, about the situation of Christians in the Middle East.
Barnabas Fund has been asked to produce a briefing paper (see below) for this debate, and I am now urgently seeking your prayers that the Lords will recognise the grave danger that Christian minorities are facing as a result of the ‘Arab Spring’. Please pray also that the Lords will exert their influence on our government so that it will press for the protection of Christians and other vulnerable groups in the region.
I have just returned from a visit to Syria, where the Christians are extremely concerned about what is happening in their country and what the future holds for them there. Also the Syrian Christians, and Iraqi Christian refugees in the country, are in considerable need, as the country’s economy is crippled by the ongoing unrest.
Please pray for Christians in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East, that the Lord will grant them His peace at this time of uncertainty and meet all their practical needs. Barnabas Fund has been helping Syrian Christians and Iraqi Christian refugees in the country for many years. If you would like to help them, please send a donation to the Syria General Fund.
Barnabas Fund Briefing on the Situation of Christians in the Middle East
Religious minorities have been placed under growing pressure in the wake of the momentous changes brought about in the Arab world as a result of the so-called “Arab Spring”. These momentous changes brought with them hopes for democracy, respect for human rights and prosperity for all citizens of the Middle East.
Sadly, the current developments we are witnessing turn these hopes into fears. From Tunisia to Egypt, Islamist parties have gained ascendency. This is a potential disaster for religious minorities, as Islamist parties rely on a conservative interpretation of Sharia as the principal source of law and ultimately want to make it the law of the land, thus greatly restricting reforms that promote human rights and placing even greater restrictions on non-Muslims than previously existed.
The crisis that has engulfed Syria threatens the two million Christians living there. Since the armed conflict in Iraq, Syria has provided refuge for hundreds of thousands of Iraqi Christian refugees, amongst others who fled to Syria after they were targeted by Islamist extremists in Iraq. While the Assad regime has undoubtedly been authoritarian and brutal in its treatment of its citizens, Syria has traditionally protected its religious minorities more than any other country in the Middle East. Should Syria become consumed by a civil war, it is feared that the vulnerable Christian population will be targeted on a similar scale to what we witnessed in the aftermath of Western intervention in Iraq. China: President Hu Jintao Tells Chinese Navy: Prepare For War
“China’s navy should speed up its development and prepare for warfare, President Hu Jintao has said.
He told military personnel they should ‘make extended preparations for warfare’.
China is locked in territorial disputes with several other nations in the South China Sea. Political tension is also growing with the US, which is seeking to boost its presence in the region.
After Mr Hu’s comments, the US said China was entitled to defend itself.
‘Nobody’s looking for a scrap here,’ said Pentagon spokesman Admiral John Kirby in quotes carried by the AFP news agency.
‘Certainly we wouldn’t begrudge any other nation the opportunity to develop naval forces.’
Senior US and Chinese officials are currently holding talks on military issues.
The one-day meeting takes place every year, with the stated aim of ensuring there are no misunderstandings between the two nations.
‘Sovereignty dispute’
China has recently acquired its first aircraft carrier and has been vocal about its naval ambitions.
But its military remains primarily a land-based force, and its naval capabilities are still dwarfed by the US.
Mr Hu told a meeting of military officials that the navy should ‘accelerate its transformation and modernisation in a sturdy way, and make extended preparations for warfare in order to make greater contributions to safeguard national security’.
The word ‘warfare’ was used in official media, but other translations used ‘military combat’ and ‘military struggle’.” Read more.
Obama Administration Makes it Official: The Fort Hood Massacre by Jihadist Nidal Hasan Was ‘Workplace Violence’ and Nothing More
We shouldn’t be surprised. According to the “Panderer-in-Chief” and great supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood who was himself raised in the tradition of Islam and now employs Islamists in the White House, “Islamic terrorism” does not exist in America …
“Sen. Susan Collins on Wednesday blasted the Defense Department for classifying the Fort Hood massacre as workplace violence and suggested political correctness is being placed above the security of the nation’s Armed Forces at home.
During a joint session of the Senate and House Homeland Security Committee on Wednesday, the Maine Republican referenced a letter from the Defense Department depicting the Fort Hood shootings as workplace violence. She criticized the Obama administration for failing to identify the threat as radical Islam.
Thirteen people were killed and dozens more wounded at Fort Hood in 2009, and the number of alleged plots targeting the military has grown significantly since then. Lawmakers said there have been 33 plots against the U.S. military since Sept. 11, 2001, and 70 percent of those threats have been since mid-2009. Major Nidal Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, who is being held for the attacks, allegedly was inspired by radical U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Yemen in late September. The two men exchanged as many as 20 emails, according to U.S. officials, and Awlaki declared Hasan a hero.
The chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, Connecticut independent Sen. Joe Lieberman, said the military has become a ‘direct target of violent Islamist extremism’ within the United States.
‘The stark reality is that the American service member is increasingly in the terrorists’ scope and not just overseas in a traditional war setting,’ Lieberman told Fox News before the start of Wednesday’s hearing.
In June, two men allegedly plotted to attack a Seattle, Wash., military installation using guns and grenades. In July, Army Pvt. Naser Abdo was accused of planning a second attack on Fort Hood. And in November, New York police arrested Jose Pimentel, who alleged sought to kill service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Both Pimentel and Abdo also allegedly drew inspiration from al-Awlaki and the online jihadist magazine Inspire, which includes a spread on how to ‘Make a Bomb in the Kitchen of Your Mom.’
Rep. Peter King of New York, the Republican chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said military service members are ‘symbols of America’s power, symbols of America’s might.’
‘And if they (military personnel) can be killed, then that is a great propaganda victory for al Qaeda,’ King told Fox News.
King said there is also evidence that extremists have joined the services.” Read more.
Egypt: Islamists Win 2/3 of Vote, Salafists Surge, Egypt’s Military ‘Vexed and Concerned’
By Ryan Mauro – “The West has long feared the advent of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, but the first round’s election results released Sunday night show an even worse group of Islamists surging: The Salafists. Nearly one-fourth of Egyptians voted for the group whose puritanism makes the Brotherhood look moderate.
On Sunday night, the Egyptian government released partial results for the first round of elections. Sixty-two percent of eligible Egyptians voted. The Muslim Brotherhood came in first place with 36.6%, followed by the Salafist bloc with 24.4%. The non-Islamists, the Egyptian Bloc and the Wafd Party, came in 13.4 and 7.1 percent respectively. It was a landslide victory for the Islamists, who are now expected to control about two-thirds of the parliament once all rounds of voting are completed.
The Muslim Brotherhood is not a moderate group, but it appears reformist when compared to the Salafists. Whereas the Brotherhood embraces elections, the Salafists are hostile to the very concept of voting. The Brotherhood is pragmatic and aware of political constraints, whereas the Salafists have no qualms about expressing their desire to turn Egypt into another Saudi Arabia. The Brotherhood is ‘moderate’ in comparison to the Salafists like Hamas is ‘moderate’ compared to Al-Qaeda.
The success of the Salafists is particularly terrifying because they are honest about their objectives.” Read more.
Egypt: Rising Islamic Leader Declares ‘We Will Launch a Campaign of Islamic Conquest Throughout the World’, ‘Exterminate’ Christians Who Get In the Way of Sharia – “A rising leader in the radical Islamic movement in Egypt that has become a major political player since the demise of Hosni Mubarak’s regime says Christian churches may need to be blown up and Christians exterminated to allow the advance of Islamic law, or Shariah. The comments come from Sheik ‘Adel Shehato, a senior leader with the Egyptian Islamic Jihad terrorist group… The sheik, a senior jihadist leader, responded to a question about using violence against Christians, who make up a substantial minority in Egypt.” Read more.
Pakistan: Incitement Against Christians Continues as Mob of Muslims Attack Christian Falsely Accused of ‘Blasphemy’
By Jibran Khan – “Lahore (AsiaNews) – A Christian of 25 was yesterday accused of blasphemy in the district of Qazi, Shahdra, Lahore. Construction worker Khurram Masih, married for two months, was working at the residence of Abdul Majeed. After completing the installation of marble tile he collected some pieces of paper, newspapers and wooden boards to burn. Abdul Majeed once he saw the burnt leftovers started screaming that Khurram Masih had ripped and burned parts of the Koran. Other workers gathered, attacking Masih and dragging him to the police station.
Abdul Majeed made the request to file a complaint against Khurram Masih for blasphemy. Religious leaders, along with human rights activists gathered at the police station and tried to resolve the issue, but the officers and local residents did not want to let Masih go, and continued to insist that the complaint be upheld. And this morning a FIR (First Information Report) for blasphemy under the Pakistan Penal Code was registered against Khurram Masih.
Human rights activists, including Khalid Shahzad and Khalid Gill, were present at the police station, they asked for protection for the accused and have protested that the charge was false. Extremist groups have announced through loud speakers that a Christian had desecrated the Koran and had to be punished. The human rights activists are concerned about the safety of Khurram Masih, who is not safe in the Shahdra police station. Father Francis Xavier, of the diocese of Lahore, told AsiaNews: ‘It is a very sad incident, the young man was falsely accused of blasphemy. The person who made the complaint is linked to religious groups, and is known for his hatred toward non-Muslims. There have been ads in the area inciting hatred towards Christians. We fear for the life of Khurram Masih, he must be assured protection from those who want to kill him.'” Read more.
Islamists in Iraq to Christians: ‘If Anyone Decides to Reopen His Store, We Will Kill Him’
Robert Spencer’s Jihad Watch has posted an update to this story. The Islamist campaign against all things contrary to Sharia Law continues, and to drive home just how dead serious they are about preventing Christians in Zakho and elsewhere from buying and selling products, notes have been left for Christians informing them that if they reopen their destroyed stores, they will be killed …
“… Islamic extremists targeted Christian shops and activities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq: in Zakho, 470 miles from Baghdad, near the border with Turkey, a fundamentalist group incited by the local imam’s sermon devastated dozens of liquor stores, a hotel and massage centres, injuring at least 30 people. The attacks have continued even in the following days in Dohok, where three shops and a community centre belonging to Chaldean Christians were burnt.
Christian sources for AsiaNews, anonymous for security reasons, add that ‘in Baghdad liquor stores are subject to threats’, the managers have received threatening letters, which state that the exercise ‘will be blown up.’ The attacks are the result of a ‘campaign’ that targets ‘all that is contrary to Shariah,’ promoted by Islamists who want to radicalize the country. Unfortunately, the source adds, there is no ‘moderate movement’ capable of containing the fundamentalist drift.” Read more.
It’s a Lose-Lose Situation for the US and Israel as Clinton Urges Syria To Break Free From ‘Dictator’
And into the hands of Islamists. It’s a no-win situation with Syria. If Assad remains in power, Syria’s alliance with Israel’s arch enemies in Iran, Lebanon and Gaza will continue and remain as strong as ever. If his grip begins to crumble even further and his fall is all but certain, like a wounded animal cornered in a fight-or-flight stratagem Assad may decide to go down with one final ‘hurrah’, a ‘blaze of glory’ as it were and an outcome that we could only begin to imagine. And as we have seen time and again after each and every overthrow, the Islamists will surely seek to devour all that remains …
“Hillary Clinton has urged the Syrian opposition to build a society that is free of the ‘whims of a dictator’.
The US Secretary of State spoke after meeting six members of the Syrian National Council, an exile group seeking to end the 41-year rule of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his late father.
She also urged the group to respect the rule of law and minority rights: ‘Obviously, a democratic transition includes more than removing the Assad regime.
‘It means setting Syria on the path of the rule of law and protecting the universal rights of all citizens, regardless of sect or ethnicity or gender.’
She added: ‘The Syrian opposition that is represented here recognises that Syria’s minorities have legitimate questions and concerns about their future.
‘They need to be assured that Syria will be better off under a regime of tolerance and freedom that provides opportunity and respect and dignity on the basis of…consent rather than the whims of a dictator.’
Clinton’s meeting with the opposition comes after the United States announced it would be sending its ambassador to Syria back to Damascus after he was recalled in October.
A senior Obama administration official confirmed Robert Ford would be returning after the administration argued that his presence was important for advancing US policy goals and serving as a witness to the ongoing violence there.” Read more.
Flashback: Syria’s Choice: Murderous Secular Regime or Islamic Fundamentalists – “As Syrian dictator Bashar Assad continues to slaughter his people, there are growing indications that the Islamists are increasing their efforts to replace his regime. What started as a secular Facebook revolution against the Assad regime is now beginning to look more like a jihad [holy war] led by Muslim fundamentalists. The Muslim Brotherhood is clearly seeking to hijack the anti-Assad protests, in both the political and military fields. In the past few months, there have been many signs of a ‘return to Islam’ in Syrian society.” Read more.
Our World: An Ally No More, ‘Under President Obama, the US Government Has Become Hostile’ to Israel
By CAROLINE B. GLICK – “With vote tallies in for Egypt’s first round of parliamentary elections in it is abundantly clear that Egypt is on the fast track to becoming a totalitarian Islamic state. The first round of voting took place in Egypt’s most liberal, cosmopolitan cities. And still the Muslim Brotherhood and the Salafists received more than 60 percent of the vote. Run-off elections for 52 seats will by all estimates increase their representation.
And then in the months to come, Egyptian voters in the far more Islamist Nile Delta and Sinai will undoubtedly provide the forces of jihadist Islam with an even greater margin of victory.
Until the US-supported overthrow of Hosni Mubarak, Egypt served as the anchor of the US alliance system in the Arab world. The Egyptian military is US-armed, US-trained and US-financed.
The Suez Canal is among the most vital waterways in the world for the US Navy and the global economy.
Due to Mubarak’s commitment to stemming the tide of jihadist forces that threatened his regime, under his rule Egypt served as a major counter-terror hub in the US-led war against international jihad.
GIVEN EGYPT’S singular importance to US strategic interests in the Arab world, the Obama administration’s response to the calamitous election results has been shocking. Rather than sound the alarm bells, US President Barack Obama has celebrated the results as a victory for ‘democracy.’
Rather than warn Egypt that it will face severe consequences if it completes its Islamist transformation, the Obama administration has turned its guns on the first country that will pay a price for Egypt’s Islamic revolution: Israel. Read more…
