By Damien Gayle, Mail Online – “The Saudi royal family are building a 600-mile barrier to fortify the northern frontier of their kingdom.

The fence and ditch, punctuated with radar surveillance towers, command centres and guard posts, aims to protect the Saudis’ oil-rich territory from invasion by the Islamic State insurgency.

Last week a suicide bombing and gun attack which killed two Saudi border guards and their commanding officer was styled by one analyst as the Islamic State’s first attack on the kingdom.

No group claimed responsibility for the assault in a remote desert area, but it happened just next to Iraq’s Anbar province where Islamic State militants are fighting Iraqi army forces.

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud inaugurated the first phase of the border security project in September, soon after Islamic State’s Sunni insurgency swept across Iraq.

The multi-layered barrier, which will eventually stretch across the Saudi-Iraq border from Jordan to Kuwait, includes 78 monitoring towers, eight command centres, 10 mobile surveillance vehicles, 32 rapid-response centres, and three rapid intervention squads, reports Janes.com.

Citing a promotional video, the defence industry magazine reported the six-mile-deep barrier consists of a ditch, two fences and a patrol road connecting the watchtowers and guard rooms. The video included footage of thermal imagers and battlefield radar systems that can detect individuals at up to 12 miles away and vehicles at up to 24 miles away.

By Katharine Lackey and Oren Dorell, USA Today – “Two terror suspects were killed and another was in custody after a police raid on a cell planning a ‘major, imminent attack’ in Belgium, a magistrate said at a news conference Thursday.

Those targeted in the raid had been under surveillance since recently returning to Belgium from Syria and were close to carrying out an attack, Magistrate Eric Van der Sypt said.

The operation in the industrial town of Verviers, located about 80 miles southeast of the capital of Brussels, came amid heightened concerns over terrorism in Europe in the wake of last week’s Paris terror attacks and the threat of extremists returning from Syria.

However, Sypt said there was no link yet to the Paris attacks, and the operation was the result of an investigation into extremists returning from Syria that had been underway for a few weeks.

The suspects were killed after they opened fired on authorities near a train station inVerviers. No civilians or officers were injured, Sypt said.

‘These were extremely well-armed men,’ with automatic weapons, Van der Sypt said.

Witnesses told Belgium’s RTBF radio they heard a series of explosions followed by rapid fire near a bakery and a train station in the town.

Belgium’s terror alert level has been raised to its second highest level, and anti-terror raids were also underway in near Brussels, Sypt said.

Islamic State militants had threatened attacks on Belgium in a video released Wednesday, the Brussels-based Belga news agency reported, according to AFP.

The terrorism cell targeted in Verviers is believed to have ties to the militant group, CNN reported. A senior Belgian counter-terrorism official told CNN the group had been instructed by the Islamic State to carry out attacks in Belgium and Europe in retaliation for the U.S.-led airstrikes against the militants in Syria and Iraq.” Read more.

Business Standard – “The Islamic State (IS) group has reportedly launched a massive social media campaign, urging every Muslim living in the West to act as a ‘city wolf’.

According to the Washington Times, following the recent terror attacks in France, the Islamic State posted Tweets calling on jihadists to kill more Westerners and to celebrate the lives of the three Muslims who slaughtered 17 innocent civilians and police on a rampage that began on Jan.

The Islamic State started the campaign on Sunday via two affiliated media groups, Al-Battar and Al-Ghuraba.

Robert Maginnis, a retired Army officer and military analyst said that IS’ social media sophistication was working and needed to be defeated quickly.

He added the ‘IS’ strategy to harness social media challenges the West’s military dominance by reaching past our governments to the people.’

The group used the hashtag #FightForHim – a reference to the Prophet Muhammad – over 3,000 times on Twitter since early Sunday, the report said.” Source – Business Standard.

By Eyder Peralta, NPR – “Amnesty International has released stunning satellite imagery that it says ‘show devastation of catastrophic proportions’ in Baga and Doron Baga, two towns in northeastern Nigeria that were attacked by Boko Haram.

As we’ve pointed out in the past few days, there has been confusion over just how deadly this attack was. Amnesty International has consistently said that the Islamic militants tore through the towns, burning buildings and killing as many as 2,000 people. The government, however, has denied those claims, saying the death toll is closer to 150.

The new images, the human rights group says, show the government estimates are wrong.

‘Up until now, the isolation of the Baga combined with the fact that Boko Haram remains in control of the area has meant that it has been very difficult to verify what happened there,’ said Daniel Eyre, Amnesty Nigeria researcher said in a statement. ‘Residents have not been able to return to bury the dead, let alone count their number. But through these satellite images combined with graphic testimonies a picture of what is likely to be Boko Haram’s deadliest attack ever is becoming clearer.'” Read more.

Let’s ignore all the contradictions and errors found throughout the “noble” Qur’an. Let’s overlook the fact that new-and-improved “divine revelations” render earlier “divine revelations” obsolete in the “eternal” Qur’an. Let’s forget the fact that approximately 66% of all verses in the “perfect” Qur’an have some type of variance due to the ambiguity of early Arabic text. If Islam’s “holy” book today calls Jews the most vile and hostile people on the face of the earth, then these “prophetic” words must somehow prove the Qur’an to be true. The Times of Israel – “A sheikh giving a spontaneous sermon at the al-Aqsa mosque recently called for the ‘slaughter’ of the Jews, saying they were ‘the most evil creatures to have walked this Earth.’

Omar Abu Sara was filmed at the mosque, located in the Temple Mount, on November 28. In a video made available by the Middle East Media Research Institute this week, he is seen addressing worshipers as the crowd mills about.

‘Talking about the traits of the Jews requires one to get into a special mode, because we are dealing with people to whom every single vile trait has been attributed,’ the sheikh says. ‘They were the masters of these vile traits, and they taught their secrets to others.

‘These traits were registered in the Quran, which depicted all aspects of the lives of the Jews in the most abominable images,’ he claims.

Abu Sara accuses the Jews of killing dozens of prophets, and attempting to kill the prophet Muhammad twice.

He says a battle with the Jews draws near, and praises the Islamic State “caliphate” as one of the vehicles for the Jewish people’s destruction.

‘I say to the Jews loud and clear: The time for your slaughter has come. The time to fight you has come. The time to kill you has come… Please do not leave in our hearts a single grain of mercy towards you, oh Jews, because when the day of your slaughter arrives, we shall slaughter you without mercy.'” Read more.

A Bumper Crop … For The Enemy

By Soeren Kern, Gatestone Institute – “The offices of a German newspaper that republished satirical cartoons from Charlie Hebdo, a French magazine known for lampooning Islam, have been hit by arsonists.

No one was hurt in the attack on the Hamburger Morgenpost, which occurred in the early morning hours of January 11 and caused only minor damage.

Although police arrested two individuals in connection with the incident, their identities have not yet been released to the public. But German police said they are ‘working under the assumption’ that the attack was connected to the decision by the paper, also known as MOPO, to republish cartoons spoofing Mohammed on its front page on January 8, as an act of solidarity with the attack on the journalists of Charlie Hebdo.

Hamburg Mayor Olaf Scholz said that any attack on the press and freedom of expression is an attack on democracy. ‘A free press and freedom of expression are part of the foundation on which democracy rests,’ Scholz said. ‘A democratic society without a press-mediated conversation about the political and social issues of our time cannot be imagined.’

The attack came a day after the German newsmagazine Der Spiegel reported that Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Agency (Bundeskriminalamt, BKA) has enacted a nationwide emergency plan in an effort to prevent Islamic terrorists from striking in Germany.

According to Der Spiegel, federal and state security agencies have been ordered to locate the whereabouts of up to 250 German Islamists and other ‘relevant persons’ whose identities are known to counter-terrorism authorities. The magazine also reported that the BKA had evidence ‘that key European cities could be attacked at any time.’

In an interview with the newspaper Bild am Sonntag on January 11, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere confirmed that German intelligence was monitoring ‘around 260 individuals’ who could potentially strike at any moment. He said:

“We have no concrete evidence of attacks. But, as I said, we have about 260 dangerous individuals (Gefährder). We also have around 550 people who have travelled to the battle zones in Syria and Iraq. Between 150 and 180 of these have returned to Germany, and 30 of them are battle-hardened fundamentalists. They pose a serious threat to our security. I am very concerned about well-prepared perpetrators such as those in Paris, Brussels, Australia and Canada. This is a serious situation.”

Bild questioned whether Germany has enough security personnel to track all the potential terrorists. According to the newspaper, at least 60 police officers are needed to successfully monitor just one German jihadist around the clock.

De Maiziere said he was doing all he could, but he conceded: ‘So far we have been lucky. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case.'” Read more.

By Shaamini Yogaretnam and Glen McGregor, Ottawa Citizen – “An RCMP terrorism probe in the nation’s capital has grown to include a third accused with the arrest Monday of a 21-year-old man who police allege conspired with a pair of identical twins arrested days earlier.

Suliman Mohamed, 21, was arrested Monday and charged with participating in the activity of a terrorist group and conspiring to participate in a terrorist activity.

Police confirmed that Mohamed’s arrest is connected to the arrests of 24-year-old twins Ashton and Carlos Larmond, who were swept up by RCMP on Friday.

Ottawa police were on scene at Mohamed’s grandmother’s house on Ste-Cecile Street in Vanier Friday night as part of an RCMP national security investigation.

On Saturday, two days prior to his own arrest, Mohamed answered the door at that address, where he also lives. He would not say if he knew the Larmond brothers…

Police arrested Carlos Larmond Friday at Montreal’s Trudeau Airport before he could get on a plane to travel abroad for what police allege was a plan to participate in terrorist activity.

Carlos was ticketed to New Delhi, India, transiting through Frankfurt, Germany — a popular travel hub for Western extremists on their way to Syria and Iraq via Turkey. Police have charged him with attempting to leave the country to participate in a crime, and with participating in the activity of a terrorist group.

Ashton was arrested in Ottawa, also on Friday, and subsequently charged with facilitating a terrorist activity, participating in the activity of a terrorist group, and instructing another to carry out an activity for a terrorist group. It’s alleged that the two conspired between last August and the day they were arrested.

The investigation zeroed in on Ashton an entire year before police believe the two began to conspire. It was as early as Aug. 31, 2013 when, police allege, Ashton began participating in a terrorist group’s activity.

Ashton publicly told at least one person he believed he was under RCMP watch as recently as December 2013, when he told a former hockey teammate that he was newly converted to Islam.” Read more.
