By Ali A. Nabhan and Matt Bradley, The Wall Street Journal – “Al Qaeda-inspired militants seized control of Iraq’s second-largest city on Tuesday in a brazen military operation that underscored the weakness of the Baghdad government across vast swaths of the country.

Hours after government forces fled Mosul in disarray following four days of fighting, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki declared a nationwide ‘state of maximum preparedness’ but didn’t indicate whether government forces were mobilizing to retake the Iraqi city, 220 miles north of the capital Baghdad.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the capture of Mosul, the scene of major fighting between al Qaeda and U.S. troops and Iraqi forces during the nearly nine-year American presence in the country.

But videos point to rebels aligned with the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, or ISIS. They show victorious insurgents waving black flags emblazoned with an Islamic script, which that are brandished by al Qaeda militants world-wide.

Residents of Mosul said they were shocked at the ease of the rebel takeover of government buildings, television stations and military installations where U.S.-supplied fighter airplanes, helicopters and other heavy weaponry are based.

‘The whole of Mosul collapsed today. We’ve fled our homes and neighborhoods, and we’re looking for God’s mercy,’ said Mahmoud Al Taie, a dentist. ‘We are waiting to die.’

The seizure of Mosul is the latest evidence of the weakness and disorganization that have beset Iraq’s security forces since the U.S. forces withdrew from the country in December 2011.

If the involvement of ISIS is confirmed, it also would underline the group’s determination to establish an Islamic emirate encompassing the Iraqi-Syrian frontier, weaken the already fragile Iraqi state and expand the theater of Syria’s three-year-old civil war.” Read more.

According to Barack Hussein Obama “the Taliban are not our enemies and we don’t want to fight them.” Because Obama would rather negotiate with terrorists instead of eradicating them. By David Williams, Mail Online – “Gunmen disguised as police guards attacked a terminal at Pakistan’s busiest airport on Sunday with machine guns and a rocket launcher during a five-hour siege that left 27 people dead as explosions echoed into the night.

The Pakistani Taliban, an alliance of insurgent groups fighting to topple the government and set up a sharia state, later claimed responsibility, saying it was in response to army attacks along the Afghan border.

The attack on the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, began late Sunday and continued on into the dawn hours of Monday, although officials said all the passengers had been evacuated.

The Pakistani Taliban said they carried out the attack in response to air strikes in their strongholds near the Afghan border and suggested their mission was to hijack a passenger plane.

‘The main goal of this attack was to damage the government, including by hijacking planes and destroying state installations,’ said Shahidullah Shahid, a Taliban spokesman.

‘This was just an example of what we are capable of and there is more to come. The government should be ready for even worse attacks.’

Rizwan Akhtar, the chief of Pakistan’s elite paramilitary Rangers, said some of the attackers appeared to be Uzbeks but officials were still investigating to determine their identity and nationality.

‘The terrorists entered the terminal in two groups. They were foreigners, and some of them seemed to be Uzbeks.’

During the course of the attack, heavy gunfire and multiple explosions could be heard coming from the terminal, used for VIP flights and cargo, as militants and security forces battled for control.

A major fire rose from the airport, illuminating the night sky in an orange glow as the silhouettes of jets could be seen. The deadly operation was carried out by 10 militants, said the Chief Minister of Sindh province, Qaim Ali Shah.

‘They were well trained. Their plan was very well thought out,’ he told reporters. He said they intended to destroy some of the aircraft and buildings.” Read more.

And if they approve of jihad in a nation such as Syria that is mostly Muslim, they’ll most certainly approve of jihad in nations that are not. Following the terror attack against a Jewish museum in Belgium by a former Syrian rebel fighter from France, EU anti-terror chief, Gilles de Kerchove, lamented that Europe can expect even more Islamist attacks from jihadists returning home from the fight. But as I said then, the problem that Europe is facing is much larger than hundreds or even thousands of rebel fighters finding their way back inside Western borders. It’s also the hundreds of thousands of like-minded Muslims that are already within them …

‘Freed Taliban Commander Tells Relative He’ll Fight Americans Again,’ by Mushtaq Yusufzai, NBC News, June 6, 2014:

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – One of the five Taliban leaders freed from Guantanamo Bay in return for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl’s release has pledged to return to fight Americans in Afghanistan, according to a fellow militant and a relative.

“After arriving in Qatar, Noorullah Noori kept insisting he would go to Afghanistan and fight American forces there,” a Taliban commander told NBC News via telephone from Afghanistan.

Noori pushed to return to Afghanistan after learning that the U.S. had provided written assurances that no country would arrest any of the five freed for a year as long as they lived peacefully, one of his relatives told NBC News by telephone from Afghanistan.

Under the terms of the deal, the former commanders would remain under the control of the government of Qatar for one year and be subject to “restrictions on their movement and activities,” a senior U.S. official has told NBC News –- including a one-year travel ban. A diplomatic source later told NBC News that their movements within the Arab emirate are not restricted.

Noorullah Noori has threatened to return to Afghanistan to fight foreign forces.

The news comes amid a fierce debate on Capitol Hill over whether the Obama administration should have traded Bergdahl for the five commanders held at Guantanamo. Former members of Bergdahl’s platoon have described him as a deserter who walked away from his outpost.

Among the Taliban, the commanders’ release was treated as a victory.

“We thought we may not see them again as once you land in the hands of Americans, it’s difficult to come out alive,” Noori’s relative said. “But it was a miracle that Allah Almighty gave us Bergdahl and we got back our heroes.”

All of the five — Mohammad Fazl, Mohammed Nabi, Khairullah Khairkhwa, Abdul Haq Wasiq and Noori – were suffering from bad health after their imprisonment and currently being treated in a hospital in Qatar, the relative added….

He served with honor and distinction … as a new Taliban recruit. Though likely viewed initially with xenophobic suspicion often shared amongst Islamists — especially after being “AWOL” from the Taliban for a short period — it looks like he eventually became accepted as one of their own. This could only happen if Bergdahl said and done things that were in line with the Taliban’s own violent Jihadist ideology and the teachings of Islam …

Bowe Bergdahl at one point during his captivity converted to Islam, fraternized openly with his captors and declared himself a ‘mujahid,’ or warrior for Islam, according to secret documents prepared on the basis of a purported eyewitness account and obtained by Fox News.

The reports indicate that Bergdahl’s relations with his Haqqani captors morphed over time, from periods of hostility, where he was treated very much like a hostage, to periods where, as one source told Fox News, ‘he became much more of an accepted fellow’ than is popularly understood. He even reportedly was allowed to carry a gun at times.

The documents show that Bergdahl at one point escaped his captors for five days and was kept, upon his re-capture, in a metal cage, like an animal. In addition, the reports detail discussions of prisoner swaps and other attempts at a negotiated resolution to the case that appear to have commenced as early as the fall of 2009.

The reports are rich in on-the-ground detail — including the names and locations of the Haqqani commanders who ran the 200-man rotation used to guard the Idaho native — and present the most detailed view yet of what Bergdahl’s life over the past five years has been like…

At one point — in late June 2010, after Bergdahl succeeded in one of his escape attempts — the Haqqani commanders constructed a special metal cage for him, and confined him to it. At other points, however, Bergdahl was reported to be happily playing soccer with the Haqqani fighters, taking part in AK-47 target practice and being permitted to carry a firearm of his own, laughing frequently and proclaiming ‘Salaam,’ the Arabic word for ‘peace.'” Read more.

Was Bowe Bergdahl Working With Taliban? ‘IEDs Started Going Off Directly Under The Trucks’ – “CNN’s Jake Tapper interviewed team leader Sgt. Evan Buetow and Buetow reports of suspicion that Bergdahl began working with the Taliban after his disappearance: … ‘Following his disappearance, IEDs started going off directly under the trucks. They were getting perfect hits every time. Their ambushes were very calculated, very methodical,’ said Buetow. It was ‘very suspicious,’ says Buetow, noting that Bergdahl knew sensitive information about the movement of U.S. trucks, the weaponry on those trucks, and how soldiers would react to attacks. ‘We were incredibly worried’ that Bergdahl was giving up information, either under torture, or otherwise, says Buetow.” Read more.

By Stewart Bell, National Post – “A suicide bomber who attacked an Iraqi army base last November was a Calgary business analyst who disappeared after his wife divorced him, friends said Wednesday amid rising concerns about the flow of Canadians to overseas terror groups.

Those who knew Salman Ashrafi in Calgary said they had lost all contact with him after he left Canada in late 2012. And now they know why: He apparently died seven months ago after detonating a car bomb north of Baghdad.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria posted his photo online in March, calling him Abu Abdullah Al Khorasani, but a Calgary Muslim community leader said the man was Ashrafi, a privileged Pakistani-Canadian.

‘He seemed like a regular guy and he was one of those guys that actually had a career, had a wife,’ the man said.

A University of Lethbridge graduate, he had worked for Talisman Energy and Exxon. ‘The guy was stable.’

Like its Western allies, Canada has been struggling to deal with the growing number of youths joining extremist groups in Syria. About 130 Canadians are currently serving in factions aligned with Al-Qaeda — about 30 of them in Syria alone.

Including Ashrafi, at least four have died in the past year. The danger they pose to the public was underscored on May 24 when a gunman opened fire in a Brussels museum, killing three people. Police later arrested a man who had fought with Islamists in Syria.

‘There is significant concern that extremism in Syria will result in a new generation of battle-hardened extremists who may seek to return to their home countries or export terrorism abroad,’ the Canadian Security Intelligence Service website says.” Read more.

He was reportedly fighting with the al-Qaeda-linked group Jabhat al-Nusra. According to reports, al-Gharib was killed by the Free Syrian Army, in fighting near Aleppo.
