By Charlotte McDonald-Gibson, The Independent – “The video clip posted on the YouTube account of Belgian teenager Brian De Mulder was brief, but the threat to one of Belgium’s biggest tourist attractions was chilling and clear.

Over the black-and-white flag of one of Syria’s Islamist rebel groups, a voice chants: ‘Bombs are falling. Atomium, I hear a bang. Body parts are everywhere.’

Mr De Mulder, 19, is one of hundreds of Europeans currently in Syria and believed to be fighting alongside the rebel groups trying to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

While it is not clear if he himself posted the threat against the Atomium, a huge monument of stainless steel spheres built for the 1958 World Fair, the video reflects the worst fears of law-enforcement agencies and governments across Europe.

Since Syria splintered into civil war in 2011, European Muslims – including up to 300 Britons – with motives ranging from idealism to more radical ideologies have been travelling there in increasing numbers. Now, dozens are returning home, and the fear is that they are no longer impressionable youngsters, but battle-hardened extremists.

‘By the time they have returned,’ says Rob Wainwright, director of the EU-wide policing body Europol, ‘their extremist views might have been more entrenched and there is clearly a potential danger to society in terms of how they might manifest their views in direct action.’

The International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation last month estimated 1,900 Western Europeans are fighting in the Syrian conflict, more than triple the 600 there last year.” Read more.

By Nick Logan, Global News – “A Canadian man who converted to Islam and went to Syria to fight with rebels has reportedly been killed in the civil war-ravaged country.

The death of Nova Scotia-born, Calgary-raised Damian Clairmont, who changed his name to Mustafa al-Gharib, was reported on Wednesday. He was reportedly fighting with the al-Qaeda-linked group Jabhat al-Nusra.

According to reports, al-Gharib was killed by the Free Syrian Army, in fighting near Aleppo. There was no clear indication of when exactly he died.

Foreign Minister John Baird acknowledged the reports of al-Gharib’s death to media in Washington D.C. on Wednesday and said ‘there is probably more than one Canadian fighting with the opposition.’

On a Twitter account belonging to Abu Turab Al-Muhajir, who describes himself on social media as an ‘‘American ‘Jihadi’ or [whatever] they are calling it,’ a post about al-Gharib read: ‘My Bro …. Abu Talha al-Canadi Executed by #FSA! InshAllah we will meet in Jannah! May Allah accept your Shahada!'” Read more.

By Murtaza Haider, Dawn – “From Aleppo in Syria to Quetta in Balochistan, Muslims are engaged in the slaughter of other Muslims. The numbers are enormous: over 93,000 killed in the Syrian civil war and over 48,000 dead in Pakistan. Millions have perished in similar intra-Muslim conflicts in the past four decades. Many wonder if the belief in Islam was sufficient to bind Muslims in peace with each other.

Since the end of the Second World War, the world has moved in two distinct directions. The West, mostly Christian, has tried to minimise the intra-European conflict and has largely been successful with some exceptions. The Muslim world, on the other hand, has fallen into one violent conflict after another, involving mostly Muslims. Several intra-Muslim conflicts continue to simmer as proxy wars. In the 80s, the Iran-Iraq war alone left millions dead. More recently, a car bomb in Iraq on Sunday killed another 39 in the sectarian warfare between the Shias and Sunnis that killed at least 1,045 in May 2013.

As the violence amongst Muslims increases, most Muslims prefer denial or look for scapegoats. Those in denial believe no such violence exists and the entire issue is made up by the western-controlled media. Others blame it on scapegoats – Indians and Americans are the most frequently blamed. The overwhelming evidence, however, suggests that the sectarian and tribal divisions amongst Muslims and justifying violence in the name of religion are the primary causes of why Islam is at war with itself.

In Pakistan, confessions and appalling claims of responsibility by the spokespersons for the Tehreek-i-Taliban and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi should leave no doubt about where the guilt resides. At the same time, the Pakistani Intelligence agencies have put together incriminating evidence running into hundreds of thousands of pages against the extremist sectarian outfits, al Qaeda affiliates, the nationalist militias in Balochistan, and others who have perpetrated indiscriminate violence against civilians and the State resulting in over 48,000 deaths since 2004.

The hate-fuelled gulfs that divide Muslims are so wide that not only unarmed civilians, but doctors and others who try to save victims of violence, are also targeted by the extremists. The attack on the Bolan Medical Complex on Saturday, which left scores dead including four nurses, was not the first of its kind. A sectarian attack in Karachi in February 2010 was followed by a bomb attack on the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Hospital where victims were rushed for treatment. More than 25 Shia Muslims perished in the two attacks.

And while the Muslim on Muslim violence is claiming victims all over Pakistan, the violence against non-Muslims, including Hindus and Christians, often brings together Muslims of different stripes, who would otherwise be fighting each other, in attacking religious minorities.” Read more.

A new report by the Institute for National Security Studies indicates a steep rise in the number of suicide bombings since the turn of the century, with 2013 seeing a jump over the year prior.

Amira Karroum Before The Qur’an Cured Her Of Life

News.com.au – “A MEMORIAL service has been held at a western Sydney mosque for slain Muslim woman Amira Karroum, and her husband Yusuf Ali.

Ms Karroum’s sister Rose requested the Masjid Noor mosque in Granville hold the service, last night, for worshippers to mourn the couple who were killed in Syria late last week.

Both Ms Karroum and Mr Ali were worshippers at the mosque before Mr Ali moved to Syria mid-last year.

Relatives today said arrangements were still being made to fly the couples’ bodies back to Australia for burial.

Pictured clad in a black burqa, Karroum bore no resemblance to the fresh-faced student from one of the country’s most prestigious Anglican schools when she died in a bullet-ridden house in Syria last week.

The 22-year-old had left her western Sydney home just days before Christmas, telling her family she was heading to Denmark to holiday with friends and then do some humanitarian work.

But on Saturday morning, Department of Foreign Affairs officials broke the news to Karroum’s father Mohamad and mother Honor Deane their daughter and her Muslim husband, Yusuf Ali, had died in the war-torn country, the latest victims of the conflict that has been raging since 2011.

Gold Coast-based Mr Karroum, who runs a kebab shop in Broadwater, collapsed with a heart attack after hearing the devastating news.

Amira Karroum and her husband were killed inside a house near the city of Aleppo, ground zero of the war near the border with Turkey, last Thursday, possibly by members of the Free Syrian Army, which is fighting government troops and other factions of the rebel movement trying to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

When she finished school five years ago, before moving to Granville in Sydney’s western suburbs, Karroum showed no hint of being the radical Muslim she would become…

Karl Karroum said his half-sister was always a Muslim, despite her Anglican education.

‘She was born a Muslim, so was her sister Rose. Their mum isn’t Muslim, but our dad is,’ he said.

‘She went to that school because it was the best education, and an all-girls’ school… it suited our faith.’

He said Karroum did not wear a burqua or niqab, traditional Muslim dress for women, until a few years ago.

‘She started wearing it once she studied her religion more as an adult …'” Read more.

Jihad For Beginners: Westerners Are Fighting For Al-Qaeda In Syria – “While Westerners make up about 10% of the foreign fighters in Syria, according to counterterrorism analysts, European and U.S. officials have raised the alarm about increasing numbers of their citizens taking up the fight. Most join al-Qaeda-affiliated groups like ISIS, which are dominated by seasoned jihadis from South Asia, North Africa and the Persian Gulf. The fear, say concerned officials, is that when fighters return home, they bring with them battlefield skills and extremist ideologies, or worse — intent to do violence in their home countries. Andrew Parker, head of the U.K.’s domestic intelligence service, MI5, said in a parliamentary hearing last week that British citizens in ‘the low hundreds’ had been going to Syria to fight with al-Qaeda. By Elad Benari, INN – “The Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has executed dozens of rival Islamists over the last two days, activists told Reuters on Sunday.

The executions took place as the group recaptured most territory it had lost in the northeastern Syrian province of Raqqa, according to the activists.

One of the activists, who spoke from the province on condition of anonymity, said that up to 100 fighters from the Nusra Front, another Al-Qaeda affiliate, and the Ahrar al-Sham brigade, captured by ISIS in the town of Tel Abyad on the border with Turkey, the nearby area of Qantari and the provincial capital city of Raqqa, were shot dead.

There was no independent confirmation of the report.

‘About 70 bodies, most shot in the head, were collected and sent to the Raqqa National hospital,’ the activist told Reuters.

‘Many of those executed had been wounded in the fighting. The fact that Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham are ideologically similar to the ISIS did not matter,’ he added.

In recent days, the fighting between ISIS and other Syrian rebels has escalated. Earlier Sunday it was reported that close to 500 people had been killed in the fighting between rival groups.

Three powerful rebel alliances – among them Islamist groups – have teamed up to fight ISIS, which they have warned is worse than Bashar Al-Assad’s regime.

The fact that ISIS executed rivals it caught should come as no surprise. The group has been accused of several human rights abuses, including torturing and murdering prisoners, among them children and teenagers, and forcing Druze men to convert to Islam or die.” Read more.

Schmidt and Eric Schmitt, The New York Times – “Islamic extremist groups in Syria with ties to Al Qaeda are trying to identify, recruit and train Americans and other Westerners who have traveled there to get them to carry out attacks when they return home, according to senior American intelligence and counterterrorism officials.

These efforts, which the officials say are in the early stages, are the latest challenge that the conflict in Syria has created, not just for Europe but for the United States, as the civil war has become a magnet for Westerners seeking to fight with the rebels against the government of President Bashar al-Assad. At least 70 Americans have either traveled to Syria, or tried to, since the civil war started three years ago, according to the intelligence and counterterrorism officials — a figure that has not previously been disclosed.

The director of the F.B.I., James B. Comey, said Thursday that tracking Americans who have returned from Syria had become one of the bureau’s highest counterterrorism priorities.

‘We are focused on trying to figure out what our people are up to, who should be spoken to, who should be followed, who should be charged,’ Mr. Comey said in a meeting with reporters, without referring to specific numbers. ‘I mean, it’s hard for me to characterize beyond that. It’s something we are intensely focused on.’

Fearing that the handful of Americans who have returned to the United States pose a threat because they may have received extensive training and jihadist indoctrination, the F.B.I. is conducting costly round-the-clock surveillance on a small number of these individuals, according to the officials.

‘We know Al Qaeda is using Syria to identify individuals they can recruit, provide them additional indoctrination so they’re further radicalized, and leverage them into future soldiers, possibly in the U.S.,’ said a senior counterterrorism official …” Read more.

By Robert Spencer, Jihad Watch – “It is good that Qadri ‘led all participants at the roundtable to observe silence as a mark of respect to all the victims and survivors of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.’ That is a concrete sign of solidarity with the victims, rather than the perpetrators, of at least one jihad terror attack — in stark contrast to the vague denunciations of terror we get all too often from Muslim groups in the West — vague because they don’t specify who the terrorists really are, and leave the door open to the interpretation that what is being condemned is Israeli and American ‘state terrorism,’ not Islamic jihad terrorism.

Still, questions remain. Qadri’s nearly 400-page fatwa against terrorism doesn’t even discuss the verses of the Qur’an that jihadists use to justify terrorism, as I showed in this article. In a response to that article, the Fatwa Against Terrorism site offered Qadri’s fanciful interpolated versions of the verses in question — he added material that made the violent verses relatively peaceful, but his interpolations, unfortunately, have no basis in the Arabic text of the Qur’an or Islamic tradition.

In light of that, he still has not proven that the concept of jihad actually has been hijacked by terrorists. Renowned Islamic scholar of Pakistani descent Shaykh-ul-Islam Dr Mohammed Tahir-ul-Qadri today condemned all acts of terrorism and said the concept of Jihad has been hijacked by terrorists.

Author of the acclaimed book ‘Fatwa on Terrorism and Suicide Bombings’, Dr Qadri, who is living in Canada for past few years because of threat to his life in Pakistan, said this while delivering his keynote address via a live video feed at the “People’s SAARC Prayer for Peace”, an interfaith roundtable conference to promote peace, solidarity and harmony in South Asia.

The interfaith prayer meeting and roundtable conference was jointly organised by the Observer Research Foundation Mumbai, a not-for-profit public policy think tank, and an NGO Minhaj-ul-Quran International, India.
