By Ted Thornhill, Mail Online – “In the Syrian town of Raqqa, Bashar al-Assad’s hated regime has been replaced by something many regard as being even worse – an al-Qaeda-linked group that is torturing people for writing graffiti and abolishing women’s rights.

Raqqa used to be one of the most liberal towns in Syria, but chillingly, the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is using violence to impose their rule on the locals and stamp out the freedoms rebels fought for.

One man showed a TV news channel how he was left with horrific bruises and burns after jihadists beat him and tortured him with an electrical current for spraying graffiti.

This punishment for graffiti was also meted out by the Assad authorities ousted by the revolution, leaving many wondering what it’s all been for.

He told CNN: ‘Every 15 minutes, someone poured water on me, electrocuted me, kicked me, then walked out.’

He went on to describe the anguish he suffered listening to others being tortured.

He added: ‘When a person is tortured in front of you, you feel responsible. That’s the hardest. One guy still inside used to call me Dad as I taught him about democracy.’

Rebels who have voiced their opposition to ISIS have found themselves arrested and thrown in jail without trial.

The town’s women, meanwhile, have been ordered by ISIS via posters to ‘cover up their beauty’, according to CNN, and banned from seeing male doctors or even leaving home without a male relative.

One female activist drew comparisons between the once-liberal Raqqa and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.” Read more.

By Asad Kharal, The Express Tribune – “Fearing a reprisal following the killing of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Hakimullah Mehsud in a drone strike on Friday, the local UN office has issued an alert to its employees, The Express Tribune has learnt.

‘Imminent security threat at Centaurus Mall, Islamabad, for two (02) weeks. Huge security threat of hostage situation and mass killings,’ the UN office’s alert says, according to a circular of the Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP).

‘Therefore, necessary actions be taken with the cooperation of their management, to enhance the security of important shopping malls, especially those being run by or franchise of foreign store chains,’ circular further stated.

Another report issued by the Punjab Home Department reveals that the TTP is planning to target the US and other Western nationals.

‘They are likely to hit top political leaders, senior government functionaries, key government installations and army/police establishments/envoys. Foolproof security and precautionary measures are therefore warranted to avoid any mishap,’ reads another alert.

According to yet another report, the leaderships of banned outfits have jointly decided to execute attacks on armed forces’ personnel and installations, law enforcing agencies’ personnel  and installations, government setups and foreign missions, embassies and consulates.” Read more.

By Ali Modu, Yahoo! News – “Islamist insurgents last week killed 27 people and wounded a dozen others in restive northeast Nigeria, a local official said Monday, with the attack happening two days before a deadly ambush on a wedding party.

The attack was carried out by some 70 gunmen who stormed the town of Bama in Borno state late Thursday in a convoy of motorcycles and pickup trucks, said Baba Shehu, of the area’s local government.

‘They shot down 27 persons and injured 12… About 300 houses were burnt,’ he told journalists in Borno’s capital Maiduguri, where Boko Haram was founded more than a decade ago.

Bama and other remote parts of northeast Nigeria have seen a series of brutal attacks in recent weeks which have left hundreds dead, despite official assurances that the insurgents have been weakened by an ongoing military offensive.

Details of massacres in Borno have typically been slow to emerge.

The mobile phone network in the area has been switched off since May, when President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency across the northeast and launched the military operation aimed at crushing at the Islamists’ four-year uprising.

Shehu, who blamed the Bama attack on Boko Haram, said the gunmen also destroyed 40 shops, killed livestock and stole roughly four million naira ($25,000, 19,000 euros) from Bama residents.” Read more.

By Ian Talley, The Wall Street Journal – “Somali pirates and their marauding peers off the Horn of Africa plundered roughly $400 million in the last seven years, financing slavery, arms deals, drugs trafficking, and legitimate business investments, according to a new report published Friday.

In the ground-breaking study, ‘Pirate Trails, the International Criminal Police Organization,’ United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and World Bank track financial flows from piracy around Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Seychelles and Somalia.

The report is based on interviews with crime-fighting agencies, former pirates, government officials, and bankers and analyzes investments made by several dozen pirate financiers.

‘Unchallenged piracy is not only a menace to stability and security, but it also has the power to corrupt the regional and international economy,’ said Stuart Yikona, a World Bank senior financing specialist and co-author of the report.

Globally, the bank estimates piracy costs the global economy about $18 billion a year in increased trade costs.

It’s a downward spiral for the local economy that inflames political and economic instability. Piracy in East Africa has been a significant factor in the fall in tourism and fishing yields. Remittances — international cash lifelines for many poor families — have dropped off as banks shut down operations.” Read more.
