By Stewart Bell, National Post – “A suicide bomber who attacked an Iraqi army base last November was a Calgary business analyst who disappeared after his wife divorced him, friends said Wednesday amid rising concerns about the flow of Canadians to overseas terror groups.

Those who knew Salman Ashrafi in Calgary said they had lost all contact with him after he left Canada in late 2012. And now they know why: He apparently died seven months ago after detonating a car bomb north of Baghdad.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria posted his photo online in March, calling him Abu Abdullah Al Khorasani, but a Calgary Muslim community leader said the man was Ashrafi, a privileged Pakistani-Canadian.

‘He seemed like a regular guy and he was one of those guys that actually had a career, had a wife,’ the man said.

A University of Lethbridge graduate, he had worked for Talisman Energy and Exxon. ‘The guy was stable.’

Like its Western allies, Canada has been struggling to deal with the growing number of youths joining extremist groups in Syria. About 130 Canadians are currently serving in factions aligned with Al-Qaeda — about 30 of them in Syria alone.

Including Ashrafi, at least four have died in the past year. The danger they pose to the public was underscored on May 24 when a gunman opened fire in a Brussels museum, killing three people. Police later arrested a man who had fought with Islamists in Syria.

‘There is significant concern that extremism in Syria will result in a new generation of battle-hardened extremists who may seek to return to their home countries or export terrorism abroad,’ the Canadian Security Intelligence Service website says.” Read more.

In the days and hours leading up to the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl last week, his Taliban captors in Pakistan prepared for a big sendoff. Those selected to physically hand Bergdahl over to U.S. officials at a pre-arranged location on the other side of the border in Afghanistan rehearsed the messages they wanted to convey to the American people. A videographer was assigned to cover the event, for propaganda purposes. And those closest to Bergdahl commissioned a local tailor to make him a set of the local tunic and trousers in white, which, given as a gift, denotes a gesture of respect.

‘You know we are also human beings and have hearts in our bodies,’ a senior Taliban commander affiliated with the Haqqani network, which was holding Bergdahl captive, tells TIME. ‘We are fighting a war against each other, in which [the Americans] kill us and we kill them. But we did whatever we could to make [Bergdahl] happy.’

The commander, who has been known to TIME for several years and has consistently supplied reliable information about Bergdahl’s captivity, is not authorized by his superiors to speak to the media, so he has asked not to be identified by name. The commander spoke to TIME by telephone from an undisclosed location in Afghanistan…

Another senior Taliban commander who is close to the senior Taliban leadership based in Kandahar, Afghanistan and Quetta, Pakistan, and is close to the negotiations, describes scenes of intense jubilation among the Taliban leadership and their supporters. Candies and sweet pastries are being passed around, he says, speaking to TIME via telephone from the Kandahar area. Those close to the leadership and the detainees are feasting on ‘whole goats cooked in rice’ — a special meal usually reserved for celebrations. ‘I cannot explain how our people are happy and excited over this unbelievable achievement.’ (He too has been known to TIME for several years). ‘This is a historic moment for us. Voice of the Persecuted – “Our Nigerian correspondent has confirmed another brutal attack by Boko Haram Islamic militants near the Cameroon border. They invaded Attagara village in Gwoza, a Local Government of Borno State killing over 80 Christians. The insurgents came in military Helux, disguised as Nigerian Military. They called the Christians to the church premises where over 45 Christians assembled, believing they were military personnel. Unfortunately all were killed at the church compound.

According to an eye witness demanding anonymity, a group of the insurgents overcame 30 nursing mothers and killed 17 of the children. ‘I saw it with my eyes’, the witness said. ‘But some of the women that were carrying females babies were not killed’, they added.

Another source who narrowly escaped, blamed the Military for negligence alleging that it was a deliberate attempt to wipe out the Christian community. ‘How can insurgents pass through Military Checkpoints in military uniforms and vehicles without being arrested? Something is fishy, the military base is not very far from the village but all of them refused to come. And the attack lasted for almost 6 hours, where was the Military?’ he asked.

Accounts of today’s attack clearly show that the Boko Haram came to seek revenge in regard to the killing of 7 insurgents by the community volunteer security team in a previous attack. The group had repelled against the insurgents on 1st June 2014, when they open fired on worshipers in the church that killed over 27 Christians. However, today’s attack would prove even more deadly as the number of casualties would not equal less than 80, because so many Christians were randomly shot.

Sources who counted the Christians villages lamented that, ‘No single Christian’s house is left standing. All were brought down to ashes.’ They proceeded to nearby villages in Aganjara, Agamanchiya, Ngoshe, Angurva and also burnt down the churches and the houses.” Read more.

According to a study released yesterday by the RAND Corporation, there has been a 58 percent increase in the number of jihadist groups over the last four years. Even more troubling, the number of jihadist fighters has doubled, and the number of worldwide attacks has tripled. The report further notes that terrorist groups operating in Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan pose the greatest threat to the United States.

‘Based on these threats, the United States cannot afford to withdraw or remain disengaged from key parts of North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia,’ states Seth G. Jones, author of the study and associate director of the International Security and Defense Policy Center at RAND. ‘After more than a decade of war in Afghanistan and Iraq, it may be tempting for the U.S. to turn its attention elsewhere and scale back on counterterrorism efforts. But this research indicates that the struggle is far from over.’

The raw numbers are stark. The number of groups have increased from 31 to 49, the number of fighters to a high estimate of 100,000 and the number of attacks from 392 to approximately 1000.

In an article for the Wall Street Journal, Jones points out that America also faces significant threats in addition to Islamic jihadism, including the invasion of Ukraine by Russia that threatens our NATO alliance; China’s flexing of its economic, military and cyber muscles in East Asia; and the instability of North Korea. He also puts Iran and their dedicated pursuit of nuclear-weapons in this category.

Jones’s analysis pokes a giant hole in the leftist ideology that posits America’s forays into Iraq and Afghanistan caused an increase in jihadist activity. In fact it is quite the opposite. As America has retreated from the Middle East – completely from Iraq in December of 2011, combined with a highly-publicized schedule of winding down combat operations in Afghanistan at the end of this year — terrorism is surging.” Read more.

By Samantha Payne, IBT – “A mother found dead at her £350,000 home in Northolt had been decapitated, the Old Bailey has heard.

Tahira Ahmed, 38, was discovered by police at her house in Merton Avenue following complaints from neighbours about a heated argument.

She had been stabbed and had both her arms broken, and her head cut off.

Her husband, Naveed Ahmed, 41, appeared via videolink in court, charged with her murder.

The court heard the couple, who have two children between six and 12, had lived together for 14 years.

The children were not in the house at the time of her death.

Naveed has been remanded in custody and will next appear in court on 18 August.

Neighbours spoke of their shock following the murder last week.

Pensioner Delia Burr said: ‘They were a lovely couple who always looked very happy together. We’re just struggling to believe it’s happened.’

Another neighbour added: ‘It’s just such a shock. He was a quiet, gentle and lovely man. They were lovely and would always send us Christmas cards. You would always see him with his children out on the bikes.'” Source – IBT.

But after a video — released by the Taliban Wednesday morning but not yet confirmed by the Pentagon — showing Bergdahl’s transfer into American custody, NBC News Chief Pentagon Correspondent Jim Miklaszewski said on Morning Joe Bergdahl appeared on film to be in fine health.

“What struck me first about this video is he appears to be in remarkably good shape, at least physically,” Miklaszewski said. “Don’t know how he is psychologically. He’s clean-shaven. By Rebecca Black, The Belfast Telegraph – “A suspect letter triggered a security alert at the Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal.

The bulky package aroused suspicion when it arrived at the north Belfast church yesterday.

It has been at the centre of a storm over a controversial sermon during which Pastor James McConnell slammed Islam as ‘Satanic’ and a religion ‘spawned in Hell’.

Police were called the church yesterday afternoon.

It is understood the package did not contain anything explosive but rather a sinister message.

That included a black rose, a joker card from a pack of cards as well as a message which read, ‘you will reap what you sow’.

This incident follows a hacking attack on the church website last week.

By Dave Finlay, The Scotsman – “A MAN has been found guilty of burning his ‘westernised’ ex-wife to death, after setting fire to her following a bitter divorce.

Ahdeih Khayatzadeh, 46, suffered 95 per cent burns in the attack by Ahmad Yazdanparast at the Venus Hair & Beauty salon in the centre of Stirling last October.

The two-week trial at the High Court in Edinburgh heard that 61-year-old Yazdanparast used petrol to set fire to the mother-of-three. He will be sentenced at a later date.

Detective Inspector Bryan Burns said last night: ‘The horrific nature and consequences of this crime has had an immeasurable impact on Ahdeih’s family and I would like to praise their strength, courage and support.

‘I would also like to thank those members of the community in Stirling who helped at the scene of this tragic incident and those who came forward after our appeal for witnesses.

‘The many people who responded so promptly and positively did much to assist the investigation.

‘Our thoughts remain with Ahdeih’s family during this difficult time.’

Earlier, the judge, Lady Wise, told Yazdanparast that he had been convicted of the murder of his wife in ‘a horrific attack’.

She said only one sentence could be imposed – life in prison…

Advocate depute Tim Niven-Smith told jurors: ‘He wasn’t being listened to, he wasn’t being obeyed.

‘He lost control of his wife and he murdered her.’

Yazdanparast, who told his trial that he was ‘a British Muslim’, said that in Iran the man was superior to the woman and had authority over her, but his wife was superior to him.

He said she was not listening or co-operating and was becoming ‘westernised’.” Read more.

After the chance arrest in France of the suspected perpetrator of last week’s deadly shooting at a Jewish Museum in Brussels, concern mounted Monday that the region is ill-equipped to cope with the threat posed by homegrown Islamic militants returning from Syria’s battlefields.

Mehdi Nemmouche, a Frenchman who spent more than a year fighting in Syria, was detained on Friday in Marseille following a random customs check on the coach on which he had been traveling, which had started its journey in the Netherlands.

Nemmouche, 29, was carrying a Kalashnikov automatic rifle and a handgun, the same type of weapons used in the museum attack, and a camera which contained a 40-second film in which he appears to claim responsibility for a professionally-executed shooting which left three people dead and another man in a critical condition.

Police sources said Nemmouche had refused to say anything to his interrogators. His lawyer told AFP that, ‘in principle’ he would not oppose request for him to be handed over to the Belgian authorities.

Investigators are trying to establish if he acted entirely alone and if he was planning other attacks, as French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said was highly likely.

‘He was extremely dangerous,’ Cazeneuve said. ‘It was probable that he would have struck again.’

Questions meanwhile have begun to be raised about how an individual who had been known to the French security services was able to avoid surveillance following his return to Europe.

The DGSE intelligence agency had been notified of his return when he landed in Germany at the end of March.

Radicalized in prison, Nemmouche spent over a year fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), the most radical of the jihadist groups in Syria which is closely aligned with Al Qaeda.

A European 9/11?

Europe can expect further ‘small-scale attacks’ like the fatal shooting at the Jewish Museum in Brussels, the EU’s anti-terror chief Gilles de Kerchove said Monday.

‘I don’t expect another 9/11,’ he said in a video statement. ‘I don’t expect a major sophisticated attack.’

‘I [do] expect more small-scale attacks like the one in Brussels,’ he added.

Not everyone agrees. French Al-Qaeda expert Jean-Pierre Filiu believes the threat posed by groups like ISIS, for Europe, is greater than that created by the Taliban’s sheltering of Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan prior to the 2001 attacks on New York.

‘Barack Obama said last week that a new September 11 is not possible in the United States. He was probably right because there are only a handful of American jihadists in Syria, but the danger of a European 9/11 is more real,’ Filiu said.” Read more.

Kentucky: Muslim “Refugee” Caught Stealing From Christian Ministry Trying To Help Him

WDRB – “A refugee living in Louisville is accused of stealing from an organization that was trying to help him.

According to the arrest warrant, Mustafa Abbas Shighain used a bank account number and routing number for Kentucky Refugee Ministries to pay his personal bills without consent. Kentucky Refugee Ministries relocates refugees from other countries into the Louisville area. The refugees are issued a check each month for $300 for living expenses.

Police say Shighain was a refugee when he began using the business routing number and bank account number to pay his own bills, including Time Warner and LG&E. He’s also accused of opening a Pay Pal account using the same routing number and account number, then trying to have money transferred from Kentucky Refugees Ministries’ account into the Pay Pal account, but the transaction was denied.

Police say Shighain also applied for and received a Speedway gas card in his own name using the Kentucky Refugees Ministries’ information.

According to arrest documents, an employee became suspicious of Shighain after the business received a letter from Pay Pal denying the transaction that Shighain had tried to make. An audit was conducted and the unauthorized transfers were uncovered.

Police say Shighain stole a total of $2,200 from the business.

Shighain was arrested on May 29 and charged with theft by deception and unlawful access to a computer.” Source – WDRB.
