ANSA – “Police said Tuesday they arrested an Egyptian man in Florence after his wife, who had been beaten by him, begged hospital staff for help.

Police say the woman, who has a six-month-old baby and a two-year-old child with her husband, pretended to be ill to get to a hospital where she pleaded with emergency room doctors for assistance.

She said her husband had been abusing her for three years and even threatened her with death after he had imposed what he called the rules of Islam on their household.

Family of the woman, who is 30, said the 33-year-old husband strictly controlled her, refusing her permission to leave the house and barring visitors unless he was present. The breaking point came last month, the woman said, when he beat her and threatened her with a kitchen knife.

The woman’s family says he also abused them, beating and slapping her mother and demanding money to buy a house.

Abuse of women has become a major social concern in Italy, with the government recently passing legislation to try to help end what is termed “femicide”.” Source – ANSA.

By PATRICK COCKBURN, The Independent – “A little under two years ago, Philip Hammond, the Defence Secretary, urged British businessmen to begin ‘packing their suitcases’ and to fly to Libya to share in the reconstruction of the country and exploit an anticipated boom in natural resources.

Yet now Libya has almost entirely stopped producing oil as the government loses control of much of the country to militia fighters.

Mutinying security men have taken over oil ports on the Mediterranean and are seeking to sell crude oil on the black market. Ali Zeidan, Libya’s Prime Minister, has threatened to ‘bomb from the air and the sea’ any oil tanker trying to pick up the illicit oil from the oil terminal guards, who are mostly former rebels who overthrew Muammar Gaddafi and have been on strike over low pay and alleged government corruption since July.

As world attention focused on the coup in Egypt and the poison gas attack in Syria over the past two months, Libya has plunged unnoticed into its worst political and economic crisis since the defeat of Gaddafi two years ago. Government authority is disintegrating in all parts of the country putting in doubt claims by American, British and French politicians that Nato’s military action in Libya in 2011 was an outstanding example of a successful foreign military intervention which should be repeated in Syria.

In an escalating crisis little regarded hitherto outside the oil markets, output of Libya’s prized high-quality crude oil has plunged from 1.4 million barrels a day earlier this year to just 160,000 barrels a day now. Despite threats to use military force to retake the oil ports, the government in Tripoli has been unable to move effectively against striking guards and mutinous military units that are linked to secessionist forces in the east of the country.

Libyans are increasingly at the mercy of militias which act outside the law. Popular protests against militiamen have been met with gunfire; 31 demonstrators were shot dead and many others wounded as they protested outside the barracks of ‘the Libyan Shield Brigade’ in the eastern capital Benghazi in June.

Though the Nato intervention against Gaddafi was justified as a humanitarian response to the threat that Gaddafi’s tanks would slaughter dissidents in Benghazi, the international community has ignored the escalating violence. The foreign media, which once filled the hotels of Benghazi and Tripoli, have likewise paid little attention to the near collapse of the central government.

The strikers in the eastern region Cyrenaica, which contains most of Libya’s oil, are part of a broader movement seeking more autonomy and blaming the government for spending oil revenues in the west of the country. Foreigners have mostly fled Benghazi since the American ambassador, Chris Stevens, was murdered in the US consulate by jihadi militiamen last September. Violence has worsened since then with Libya’s military prosecutor Colonel Yussef Ali al-Asseifar, in charge of investigating assassinations of politicians, soldiers and journalists, himself assassinated by a bomb in his car on 29 August.” Read more.

Egypt: Judicial Panel OKs Dissolusion Of Muslim Brotherhood, 11 Members Sentenced To Life In Prison

UPI – “The Investment Department, attached to the State Council’s Administrative Court, Tuesday stopped the broadcasting four news channels in Egypt.

Social Justice Party leader Mahmoud Farghaly Omran sued to get the shutdown of al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, Yarmuk, al-Qods and Ahrar 25, charging the stations didn’t have current licenses and were airing false reports that confused Egyptians, the Egyptian news agency MENA reported.

Opponents of the Muslim Brotherhood and deposed President Mohamed Morsi have accused al-Jazeera Mubasher Misr, a Qatari channel, of provoking internal tensions and broadcasting material supportive of the Brotherhood and Morsi since he took office last year and after his ouster in July.

Meanwhile, an Egyptian judicial panel recommended the Muslim Brotherhood be dissolved, and regime security forces arrested another leading figure of the Islamist group.

The judicial panel, which advises the government on legal issues, said the Sunni Islamist religious, political and social movement operated outside the law because it formed illegal paramilitary groups and should therefore be dissolved as a non-governmental organization.

The judges, on the State Commissioners Authority, also advised the Brotherhood’s Cairo headquarters be closed.” Read more.

Egypt: Mohammed Morsi To Be Tried For Inciting Murder – “Egypt’s state prosecutor said on Sunday he has referred ousted President Mohammed Morsi for trial on charges of inciting the murder of protesters, the BBC reported. The accusations relate to violence outside the presidential palace in Cairo last December when seven people were killed in clashes. Fourteen other members of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood are to stand trial on the same charges, according to the BBC.” Read more.

Nigeria: Islamists Ambush Bus Near Jos, Slaughter All Christians For Not Worshipping Allah

BosNewsLife – “Islamic fighters have shot dead Christians in a roadside ambush near Nigeria’s central city of Jos, church representatives said Monday, September 2.

Those killed in the attack, four kilometers (2.5 miles) off the Jos-Barkin Kadi Highway, were members of a Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) congregation in the nearby town of Foron, according to church officials.

The Christians had been ordered out of a minibus and forced to lay on the ground before being shot last Thursday, August 29, because of their faith, the COCIN denomination leadership and a witness said.

Those killed were identified as Pam Gyang, 33, Felix John, 32, as well as Jimmy Tiger, 28, Ishaku Gyang, 40, and Dachung Monday, 20.

Christian news agency Morning Star News quoted the local pastor Pam Jang Pam as saying that the assailants ‘were a combined band of ethnic Fulani herdsmen and Islamic extremist mercenaries.’ …

Also wounded, he added, were two other as yet unidentified Christians, including a pregnant woman.

Technical school student Emmanuel Sunday, who said he rode his motorbike near the murder scene, told media that he had seen the Christians and that gunmen stopped him to ask about his religion.

‘When I told them I was a Christian, they asked me to join a group of people already ordered to lie down by the side of the road. I did as I was ordered to do, and then one of the men came and searched me and took money from me, including my mobile phone,’ Morning Star News quoted him as saying.

‘It was when the gunmen started shooting and killing those of us that were Christians grouped together that I ran into a nearby maize farm, because it was already dark. They shot wildly at me, but I escaped unhurt, except the injuries I sustained while running in the bush.’

He said  God helped him escaped to tell the story and ‘show the miracle’ in his life…

The pregnant widow of Pam Gyang, 28-year-old Grace Yop Gyang, said in published remarks that her husband is also survived by their two daughters and a son.

She said she was praying that ‘through his death those who killed him will get to know Jesus as their savior.'” Read more.

The Jewish Daily Forward – “A French imam known for promoting Jewish-Muslim relations said he was physically assaulted in Tunisia by a man who called him a ‘Zionist.’

The attacker of Hassen Chalghoumi, the imam of Drancy near Paris, punched him in the chest and shoved him to the ground on Sunday near Hotel Gammarth near Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.

‘He insulted me, called me a ‘Zionist and collaborator’ and then he hit me,’ Chalghoumi was quoted Monday as telling Le Parisien daily. Chalghoumi was assaulted in front of his wife and children, who also were hit by the unnamed attacker, the report said.

According to the report, the man, who addressed Chalghoumi in French, was detained by hotel staffers and arrested by police. Chalghoumi was taken to hospital after the incident, according to the French news agency AFP. Neither he nor his family members sustained serious injuries.

Chalghoumi, who is well-known in France for his involvement in interfaith forums and initiatives, has received many death threats in France for his friendly ties with CRIF, the umbrella group representing French Jewish communities, and for visiting Israel several times.” Source – The Jewish Daily Forward.

The document — released by Mr. Snowden as part of his National Security Agency intelligence dump — said the terrorist groups worked hard to infiltrate America’s top security agencies. CIA officials uncovered thousands of applicants, roughly one in five of a subset, with ‘significant terrorist and/or hostile intelligence connections,’ the document states, as Ynet News reported.

The specifics of those ties were not revealed, but the groups most often cited as attempting to infiltrate the U.S. intelligence network were al Qaeda, Hamas and Hezbollah.

The NSA, in response, launched investigations into 4,000 instances of suspected abnormal staff activity, Ynet News said. Those investigations included the tracking of employee keystrokes on agency computers and the recording of document downloads.” Read more.

Christian Widow In Pakistan Threatened By Husband’s Muslim Family: Convert To Islam Or Die

But my husband stood up for me , saying that ‘my wife and my children should feel free to profess their faith’. However, after his death his brothers have begun to terrorize us. They have sworn to kill us if we do not convert to Islam. ‘This is the dramatic and desperate appeal of a Christian woman and widow. Her husband was a forward-looking man, a Muslim but convinced defender of the right to religious freedom. She however is now in danger of being killed by his family members.

The marriage between Muhammad Sadiq Masih and Martha Bibi withstood years of pressure and threats from the man’s relatives, contrary to a bond with an ‘unbeliever’. The pair remained united and over time became parents to three girls and one boy. The daughters were married to men from Christian families – a fragile and often persecuted minority in Pakistan – and decided to keep the faith of their mother.

However, after the father’s death, the girls began to receive threats and pressures from his brothers [ Islamists ] to convert. The eldest daughter Nosheen Afzal, who is married with Kamran Afzal, has suffered direct and personal threats from family members. An uncle branded them as ‘infidels,’ because they live as Christians even though (the girl ) is the daughter of a Muslim . To escape the retaliation they had to leave their home the next night – in haste and in secret.

In recent days, her sisters were also targeted by relatives , with threats and pressures.” Read more.

The public spaces of the Helsinki Living Word Church has been vandalized during August, at least three times. The windows of the church premises are painted with slogans glorifying Islam and criticizing Western culture and values. The incident was first reported on Nuotta.com.

The Living Word Church is located in Eastern Pasila, right next to the Helsinki Islamic center.

The messages left by the vandals read among other things: (Aug 9) ‘Alluha Akbar’ [Allah is great], (Aug 20) ‘Jesus is a Muslim’ and (Aug 25) ‘Islam is the answer’. Earlier this summer, the church windows were defaced with eggs.” Read more.

By ELLIE BUCHDAHL, Mail Online – “Fresh video has emerged from Egypt showing the storming of a Coptic church, apparently proving claims that supporters of former President Mohammed Morsi have been laying waste to Christian churches.

The shocking footage shows a Muslim mob storming the church in the southern Egyptian city of Sohag, smashing furniture and walls and torching cars as they go.

Finally a man scrambles up to the top of an archway and batters a cross down into the courtyard below.

More gang members then surround the fallen cross and pulverise it with sticks.

The six-minute video, obtained by MidEast Christian news, was shot on August 14.

On the same day in Cairo, pro-Morsi street camps erupted into protest and security forces shot dead more than 600 people, sparking yet more violence and bloodshed across Egypt.

The news site claims that the crowd – apparently made up of men and some children – had become enraged by the eviction of pro-Morsi supporters from the Cairo camps.

The video begins from a vantage point outside the church walls.

Subtitles explain that the attackers entered the church and chanted ‘We sacrifice our souls and blood to save Islam’.

The view then moves inside the church, where, according to subtitles, ‘One of the attackers ordered his partner to break the cross.'” Read more.

Israel: Devout Palestinian Muslims Working At Jerusalem Mall Arrested While Plotting To Bomb It

By GAVRIEL FISKE, The Times of Israel – “Two men, aged 22 and 25, have confessed to planning a terror attack in Jerusalem at the Mamilla Mall, near the Old City, police sources revealed on Sunday.

The men, who worked as cleaning staff at the mall, planned to use their access to plant a bomb in a trash can at the popular shopping center during the imminent Rosh Hashana (Jewish New Year) holiday season.

The men are residents of Shuafat and Ras al-Amoud, two East Jerusalem neighborhoods, and therefore have blue Israeli identity cards, allowing them access to Jerusalem without going through the security check that most West Bank Palestinians must undergo.

They were apprehended several weeks ago in a combined operation of the Israel Police, Border Police, IDF and the Shin Bet security agency.

The suspects were reportedly recruited by a Hamas cell operating out of Ramallah. In the course of the operation, the IDF uncovered the Ramallah cell’s bomb-making facility.” Read more.

By Ali Abdelaty, Sami Aboudi and Louise Ireland, Reuters – “One of al Qaeda’s most militant affiliates has called on Egyptians to take up arms against their army, saying a bloody crackdown on Islamist protesters showed peaceful methods were futile, according to an Internet statement posted on Saturday.

Scores of Egyptian security forces have been killed in a series of attacks by suspected Islamist militants – mostly in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula – since Islamist President Mohamed Mursi was deposed last month.

Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood renounced violence decades ago and denies any links with militants, including those in Sinai who have gained strength since President Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down in 2011.

‘There is nothing more right in [Allah’s] religion (Islam) than those who speak of the infidelity, reneging on Islam and abandonment of religion, and call for the necessity to fight these armies, foremost of which is the Egyptian army,’ said Abu Mohammed al-Adnani, spokesman for the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), according to the Arabic recording.

‘The Egyptian army is part and a mere copy of these armies which are seeking in a deadly effort to prevent [Allah’s] laws from being adopted and trying hard to consecrate the principles of secularism and man-made laws,’he said.” Read more.
