Indonesia: Hundreds Of Muslims Threaten Churches In West Sumatra

The Jakarta Post – “A mob numbering in the hundreds and grouped under the banner of the Islamic Organizations Communication Forum (FKOI) descended on two churches on Tuesday: Stasi Mahakarya and GPSI (Gereja Pentakosta Sion Indonesia).

Those in the crowd threatened to use force to stop the congregations from building additional structures in their compounds, nailing wooden boards outside the churches.

However, the mob was not able to come too close to the houses of worship, which were guarded by nearly 200 police officers and Indonesian Military (TNI) troops.

West Pasaman Regent Baharuddin said on Friday that he would ensure the safety of all religious followers to perform divine services. ‘Not a single stone will be thrown at other religious followers in West Pasaman. I assure you of that,’ Baharuddin told The Jakarta Post by telephone on Friday.

Baharuddin’s support for religious freedom was tempered by his support for the protestors, who, before visiting the churches, forced several cafes they said were selling alcoholic drinks to close. ‘I thank them for helping the government to discipline the cafes. Also, the church needs to seek permits before expanding its building.’

FKOI chairman Achmad Namlis said that organization’s efforts were made only to remind the churches to obtain permits before launching new construction projects.

‘This is not the tyranny of the majority. We’ll let the Christians perform their rituals as long as they don’t breach regulations,’ Achmad, who is the chairman of the local Muhammadiyah chapter, said.

Rev. Bernard, a pastor at one of the churches, said that two Islamic organizations had rejected the permit he applied for three years ago. ‘We will soon prepare the documents to get the permit,’ Bernard said.” Read more.

Nigeria: Suicide Bombers Attack Church, At Least 11 Christians Killed, Dozens Injured

By Heather Murdock, VOA – “ABUJA — Twin suicide bombers have attacked a church inside a military base in Nigeria’s Kaduna State, a volatile area known for sectarian and religious violence. Reuters news agency quotes a military spokesman as saying 11 people were killed and dozens injured.

Authorities say a bus was driven into St. Andrews Protestant Church inside a military base around noon Sunday, about ten minutes before a second suicide bomber detonated a Toyota Camry just outside.

In an e-mail to reporters, the director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Bola Koleoso, said he cannot yet confirm a casualty count but the injured have been taken to two separate hospitals.

Christian Association of Nigeria Youth Chair Diji Haruna says the church service was over when the bombs went off, but clergy and choir members were still inside.

‘Today is another bad day for Nigeria. It’s another bad day for Christians, both Christians and Muslims. Anybody that loves peace, today is a bad day for them,’ said Haruna.

The bombing took place in Jaji town about 30 kilometers from the state capital. Haruna says the military has now locked down the area. Although the bombs went off hours ago, he says information is still scarce.

‘The people that died are being carried to the mortuary and those who are injured are being carried to the hospital. It should be a military hospital in which they will still quarantine the place. You hardly get access to those places,’ said Haruna.” Read more.

Al Arabiya – “Russian warships anchored off the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea to prepare the evacuation of Russians in the area, should the conflict in Gaza escalate, The Voice of Russia quoted a Russian Navy Command source on Friday.

‘The detachment of combat ships of the Black Sea Fleet, including the Guards missile cruiser Moskva, the patrol ship Smetliviy, large landing ships Novocherkassk and Saratov, the sea tug MB-304 and the big sea tanker Ivan Bubnov, got the order to remain in the designated area of the Eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea for a possible evacuation of Russian citizens from the area of the Gaza strip in case of escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict’, the spokesperson said.

He added that ship crew members will continue routine combat training, maintenance of equipment and weapons along with other military services.

Meanwhile, Israeli troops fired on Gazans surging toward Israel’s border fence Friday, killing one person but leaving intact the fragile two-day-old cease-fire between Hamas and the Jewish state.

In November, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that a record 47,102,780 individuals receive food stamps.

According to US. Census Bureau data, that figure exceeds the combined populations of: Alaska, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

Since January 2009, the number of individuals on food stamps has skyrocketed from 31.9 million to the current record high 47.1 million. By comparison, in 1969 just 2.8 million Americans received food stamps.

Also benefiting from the rapid rise in food stamps are companies like JP Morgan who administer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. A recent report by the Government Accountability Institute found that since 2004, JP Morgan’s 24 state EBT contracts have totaled at least $560,492,596.02.

Last year, the food stamp program (officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP) cost taxpayers $72 billion, more than double the $30 billion spent four years ago.

The meteoric rise in the number of individuals receiving food stamps has spawned a thriving illegal online market for those seeking to turn their benefits into cash.

France: Muslim Men Attack Jewish Students Outside School In Paris Suburb

The Times of Israel – “JTA — Students and faculty of a predominantly Jewish school near Paris have reported two attacks and one break-in in the space of 48 hours.

The first attack against students of the ORT high school in Montreuil, an eastern suburb of the French capital, occurred on Nov. 19 just outside the institution’s gates, according to a statement issued by the school. Six young men started hitting a small group of students ‘in a very determined way and without any provocation or even exchanging words.’

Pupils who rushed to their schoolmates’ aid – including one non-Jewish ORT student of Turkish descent — also were attacked, according to ORT. The attackers slammed one of them, Nathan M., against a parking meter. ‘He was severely beaten by the attackers, who fractured his nose and broke several of his teeth,’ according to ORT’s report on the incident. Police were called to the scene but the attackers had already left.

The following day, a 17-year-old Jewish female ORT student was attacked verbally and physically in a Metro station. The girl said she was waiting for a friend at Montreuil station when she was approached by a group of five men who she described as ‘north African.’ The report said the five men, one of them wearing a keffiyeh, a traditional Arab headdress, shoved her and told her to keep quiet or they would push her on the rails when the Metro train comes ‘like they did in Gaza.’

A third incident was discovered the same day, when security guards tried to detain a man in his thirties who was spotted on school premises. He ran away after telling the guards he was Muslim and that his presence there showed they had security failures, the report said.” Source – The Times of Israel.

Saudi Mujahid Sheikh: Jihad Against The Cursed Jews Everywhere Is A Supreme Duty

MEMRI – “On November 16, 2012, the ‘Global Jihad’ website (aljahad.com/vb) posted a fatwa by the Saudi mujahid sheikh Nasser bin Hamad Al-Fahd mandating jihad against the Jews. Al-Fahd has been incarcerated in Saudi Arabia since 2003 for praising the Riyadh bombings in May of that year. In 2004, the Saudi media reported that he had recanted his jihadi ideology, but subsequently he published a communiqué stating that he had been forced to do this and that he did not regret anything he had done before his arrest.[i]

In response to the question whether it is permissible to kill Jews and harm their interests everywhere, even outside Palestine, and whether this counts as jihad, the sheikh replied that the Jews are the leaders of the infidels and the greatest enemies of Islam and the Muslims in the present age. Therefore, jihad against Jews everywhere is ‘one of the most important duties and greatest virtues,’ and any guarantees of protection granted them by tyrannical and infidel governments are meaningless, especially when the Jews are attacking Muslims as they please. Al-Fahd stressed that, when jihad against Jews outside of Palestine is more harmful than beneficial, Islam does not permit it; however, the only ones who can determine whether this is the case are the mujahideen, not ‘those who shirk jihad.’

‘We Are Going To Damascus!’: Rebels Flying Black Flag Of Islam Seize Artillery Base In Syria’s Deir Al Zour Province

By DAVID ENDERS, The Miami Herald – “MAYADIN, Syria — After a siege that lasted nearly a month, Syrian government soldiers abandoned an artillery base in the town of Mayadin Thursday morning, handing anti-government rebels in southeastern Deir al Zour province a key victory that will allow them to move next to the airport near the provincial capital, one of the last positions the Syrian military controls in the province.

‘Then we are going to Damascus!’ rebels shouted on Thursday afternoon as they hoisted a black flag above the captured base, which had been a livestock feed plant before the Syrian military took it over.

The battle for control of Deir al Zour is one of the least watched in Syria, with no foreign reporters visiting this oil-producing region in months. But the struggle here is an important one, with the rebels hoping to use their advance to cut off the government’s access to its oil fields.

How quickly the rebels can eject the military entirely from the province is uncertain, however. The Syrian military still controls the roads leading into the provincial capital, also known as Deir al Zour, though the rebels are in the process of effectively surrounding the military there.

Rebels said Syrian army reinforcements sent from Tadmor, 100 miles to the west, helped evacuate Syrian soldiers from the artillery base at Mayadin. As the reinforcements arrived, rebels engaged them on the road to the base, destroying at least one Syrian army tank before the rebels were driven back by repeated attacks by a pair of Syrian air force jets and a helicopter.

The rebels have effectively cut off soldiers at a number of Syrian army bases in recent weeks around the country, including Hamdan Airport, also in Deir al Zour, near the city of Abu Kamal on Syria’s border with Iraq. On Tuesday, rebels overran a military base east of the country’s largest city, Aleppo, after a siege there. Syria: Islamist Rebel Strength Growing, Historic Evangelical Church Of Aleppo Destroyed With Explosives

Agenzia Fides – “The historic Arabic Evangelical Church of Aleppo, in the Jdeideh district (the old town), was mined with explosives and blown up ‘by armed men, for pure sectarian hatred’: This is what Pastor Ibrahim Nasir, spiritual leader of the Arabic Evangelical Church in Aleppo says, in a statement sent to Fides Agency, referring to the explosion which occurred two days ago.

Rev. Ibrahim Nasir expressed ‘bitterness and sadness of all Syrian citizens’ for an act that makes Christians ‘inconsolable’. The message sent to Fides says: ‘Today we are announcing the destruction of the Arabic Evangelical Church, the first martyr Church. Today the Mosque of the Umayyad of Aleppo and the Evangelical Church of Aleppo met in an embrace of pain, as they were embraced, since 1848, in the worship of God and service to man. Today is the day when we cry out to Christ to say: my God, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.’

In the tragedy that the Syrian people live, says the leader, ‘every church, every mosque is a haven for all those who have been forced to flee their homes.’ And states: ‘We will overcome our pain and rebuild our country, our church, our mosque and our humanity.’

Lawlessness: Nigerian Christian Mispronouncing Word Results In Businesses Destroyed, Christians Killed By Muslim Mob

BBC – “A rumour that a Christian man blasphemed against Islam has sparked a riot in the northern Nigeria town of Bichi, police have said.

Residents said four people were killed and shops were looted.

The riot came on the day the incoming head of the Anglican Church, the Rt Rev Justin Welby, launched an initiative to promote religious tolerance in Nigeria.

Religious clashes have claimed thousands of lives in Nigeria since military rule ended in 1999.

The militant Islamist group, Boko Haram, has also been waging an insurgency since 2009 to impose strict Sharia across Nigeria, which is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and a Christian and animist south.

‘Learning about religions’

Nigeria’s Kano state police chief Ibrahim Idris said ‘misinformation’ had triggered the riot, AFP news agency reports.

‘Rumours went round that someone blasphemed the Prophet [Muhammad] and there was a breakdown of law and order,’ he is quoted as saying.

The BBC’s Yusuf Ibrahim Yakasai in Kano, the main city in northern Nigeria, says that a heavy contingent of soldiers and policemen have been deployed to Bichi to restore order.

It is a small town about 30km (18 miles) from Kano.

Mr Idris said the riot broke out when a Christian tailor mispronounced the name of a dress while chatting with his Muslim neighbour in Hausa, the main language spoken in the north, changing the meaning to ‘the Prophet has come to the market’, AFP reports.

Angry Muslim youths then attacked Christian-owned shops, looting and burning them, he said.

Residents said four Christians were killed, but Mr Idris could not confirm this.” Read more.

Egyptian Against Egyptian: President Morsi Grants Himself Sweeping Powers, Muslim Brotherhood Offices Stormed, Protesters Riot

France 24 – “Protesters torched Muslim Brotherhood offices on Friday, state media said, as supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsi staged rival rallies across Egypt a day after he assumed sweeping powers.

The offices of the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), the Muslim Brotherhood’s political arm, were set ablaze in the canal cities of Ismailiya and Port Said, state television said.

An FJP official told AFP the party’s office was also stormed in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, where clashes broke out between rival demonstrators.

In Cairo, an array of liberal and secular groups, including activists at the forefront of the protest movement that forced veteran strongman Hosni Mubarak from power early last year, planned to march on Tahrir Square, Cairo’s iconic protest hub, to demonstrate against the ‘new pharaoh’.

Morsi’s backers led by the powerful Muslim Brotherhood gathered outside the presidential palace in north Cairo in a show of support for his decision to temporarily place his decisions above judicial oversight.

‘The people support the president’s decisions,’ the crowd chanted.

Morsi was mulling an address to the nation defending his decision later in the day, aides said.

On Thursday, the president undercut a hostile judiciary that had been considering whether to scrap an Islamist-dominated panel drawing up a new constitution, stripping judges of the right to rule on the case or to challenge his decrees.

The decision effectively places the president above judicial oversight until a new constitution is ratified.

Morsi’s opponents poured into Tahrir Square after the main weekly Muslim prayers.

They were expected to be joined by leading secular politicians Mohamed ElBaradei, a former UN nuclear watchdog chief, and Amr Mussa, a former foreign minister and Arab League chief.

‘This is a coup against legitimacy… We are calling on all Egyptians to protest in all of Egypt’s squares on Friday,’ said Sameh Ashour, head of the lawyers’ syndicate, in a joint news conference with ElBaradei and Mussa.

ElBaradei denounced Morsi as a ‘new pharaoh,’ the same term of derision used against Mubarak when he was in power.

‘Morsi is a ‘temporary’ dictator,’ read the banner headline in Friday’s edition of independent daily Al-Masry Youm.

The Islamist president assumed his sweeping new powers in a decree read out by his spokesman Yasser Ali on state television on Thursday.
