“The suffering of Pakistan’s Christian minority is well documented, but what you may not be so aware of is the tragic way in which many of those who muster up the courage to seek refuge in the West are turned away at the door.
I say tragic because part of the reason why Christians in Pakistan are so badly persecuted is the widespread misconception that Christianity is a western religion. Many Muslims, not only extremists, believe that Christians are in collusion with the western powers and that to attack them is to attack the West.
With the hatred towards them so intense in their own country, it is natural that Pakistani Christians look to the West as a refuge from the threat of death that they face every day.
If any Westerner is any doubt as to the severity of the situation they need only consider the accusation of blasphemy leveled against an eighth grade pupil at a school near Abbottabad because she misspelled a word in a class test. The school’s decision to expel her only proves the extent to which the blasphemy laws are being misused.
Yet the British Government appears almost determined not to let any asylum seeker in, no matter how desperate or endangered their lives back home are. From the moment they submit their application for asylum, Pakistani Christians have a tough time convincing the Border Agency that returning to their homeland is life threatening. I have been contacted on several occasions by Pakistani Christian asylum seekers desperate for help with preparing their appeal. I have also been contacted by the chaplain at Yarls Wood detention center out concern over the lack of support they are receiving.” Read more.
Maldives: Teacher Arrested and Deported For Preaching Christianity After Police Find a Bible in His House During a Raid
“NEW DELHI, October 21 (CDN) — Police in the island nation of Maldives held a teacher from India for about 15 days before deporting him on Oct. 14 for having a Bible in his house, a source said.
Shijo Kokkattu, a 30-year-old Catholic and teacher at the Raafainu School in Raa Atoll, had been arrested in late September after police found a Bible and a rosary in his house during a raid, a foreign source in the capital city of Male told Compass by phone.
Charging that Kokkattu was preaching his Christian faith in the Muslim nation, which recently tightened restrictions on preaching and practice of non-Islamic faiths, police took him to another island for interrogation and kept him in custody for more than two weeks, said the source, who requested anonymity.
Police raided his home after Kokkattu’s colleagues found Christian materials on a school computer he had used and reported it to authorities. While downloading material from his pen drive, Kokkattu had mistakenly downloaded some Catholic songs in the Malayalam language (used in a south Indian state) and a picture of the Virgin Mary.
‘The videos were in Indian, so I don’t know what they were saying, but the images were Christian,’ school principal Mohamed Shiraj told Minivan News, an independent news portal based in the Maldives.” Read more.

Haiti: Cholera Outbreak Worsens with More Than 6,500 Dead and Hundreds of Thousands Sickened
By MARK DUNPHY – “The Haitian government has reported more than 6,500 deaths as a result of the ongoing cholera outbreak in Haiti, health officials said on Saturday. Hundreds of thousands more have been sickened.
According to the United Nations (UN) World Health Organization (WHO), Haiti has recorded nearly 470,000 cases of cholera, including 6,595 deaths, since an epidemic of the disease erupted approximately one year ago.
WHO spokesperson Tarek Jasarevic said the disease could infect another 75,000 people by the end of the year if the current trend continues. Of the nearly 470,000 patients, some 250,000 people have been hospitalized.
If the rate does continue, the number of total victims could reach more than half a million in a country of approximately 9.7 million.
After a decline in weekly cholera cases in August, the number of cases rose again in September. Areas such as the South and Nippes departments, Nord, Centre and the capital of Port-au-Prince all saw significant increases.” Read more.
Japan: 3/11 Earthquake Caused Archipelago to Move Eight Feet East and Sunk The Nation Nearly One Inch
By Julian Ryall – “The massive earthquake that struck Japan in March shifted the entire archipelago nearly 8 feet closer to the United States and caused the nation to sink close to 1 inch.
The magnitude-9 quake – the largest in recorded history in Japan – also jolted the planet on its axis by nearly 4 inches.
Experts at the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan have confirmed that the standard datum of levelling – the benchmark for measuring heights above sea level throughout Japan – sank 2.4cm (0.9 inch) as a result of the earthquake.
The change in the figure was the first since the Great Kanto Earthquake killed an estimated 105,000 people in Tokyo in 1932.
That quake had a magnitude of 8.2 and caused the ground level to sink 3.4 inches into the Pacific.
The movements were even more pronounced in parts of north-east Japan that were closest to the epicentre of the earthquake.
Experts and the GIA have calculated that the Oshika Peninsula, just to the north of the devastated town of Ishinomaki, shifted more than 17 feet to the east and sank nearly 4 feet into the Pacific Ocean. Both figures are records for land mass movements caused by a tremor in Japan, and the impact is clearly visible in the villages that dot the inlets of the peninsula.
Concrete jetties for local fishing boats are now beneath the surface of the water and the pine forests that grew above the former high tide mark have turned brown and died as their roots come into contact with salt water.” Source.
US: More Dead Seals Washing Ashore Along Expanded Area of Northeastern Coastline
By Charles McMahon – “RYE — The number of dead seals washed up on the New England coast is not the only thing expanding, a spokeswoman from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Tuesday. The area in which the seals are showing up is also increasing.
Maggie Mooney-Seus, a public affairs official for NOAA’s Northeast Region, said the number of dead seals found along the shoreline since Sept. 1 is now at 128. Last Friday, the figure was 94.
‘The distribution of where they’re showing up is expanding,’ she said.
Seals were first found on shores from northern Massachusetts to southern Maine. But Mooney-Seus said more seals are now being found in southern Massachusetts. All are considered to be ‘young of the year,’ she said.
Mooney-Seus continued to emphasize the importance of leaving the carcasses alone. She said people should not approach or touch any marine animals, dead or alive. Disturbing a seal, or the carcass of a seal, is a federal violation and can lead to a hefty fine or jail time, she said.
In addition, people should try to keep their pets, namely dogs, away from seals and seal carcasses. Mooney-Seus said there is potential for a domestic animal to contract a virus from a seal.
‘I encourage people to keep a safe distance,’ she said.
The cause of the surge in seal deaths has not yet been named. Mooney-Seus said results won’t be known until test results on blood, tissue samples and the contents of the seals’ stomachs come back.
At least one expert said the cause of the seal deaths has less to do with pathogens in the animals and more to do with contaminants in the water.” Read more.
Georgia: Thousands of Fish Found Dead Along 9-Mile Stretch of Commissioner Creek Has Officials Asking Questions
By S. HEATHER DUNCAN – “Georgia wildlife and environmental officials are trying to determine the cause of a fish kill in Commissioner Creek in Wilkinson County.
In all, 4,000 to 5,000 dead fish were found in about a nine-mile stretch of the creek and its tributary, Little Commissioner Creek, on Sept. 28 and 29, said Steve Schleiger, regional supervisor for the west central Georgia fisheries section of the state Wildlife Resources Division.
He estimated that 30 to 40 percent of the fish in the creek between McIntyre and the Toomsboro area died, and the surviving fish appeared disoriented and listless.
‘There’s no real smoking gun,’ Schleiger said. ‘The problem is the whole watershed is degraded. … I’m not sure we’ll ever be able to say definitively who caused it.’
Schleiger said the acidity of the stream was high, but that alone did not seem to have killed the fish. Aluminum in the water may have been high, which is toxic to fish when combined with high acidity.
Ben Emmanuel, the Oconee projects coordinator for the environmental advocacy group Altamaha Riverkeeper, said he spent Sept. 30 observing Commissioner Creek, which ‘had an unusual ultramarine color to it and was really uncommonly clear,’ he said.
‘The visuals were pretty striking,’ he said.” Read more.
Canada: Another Dead Whale Found at Mouth of Bear River in PEI, More Dead Whales Found in Unusual Places This Year
“A dead whale is decomposing at the mouth of the Bear River in St. Margaret’s on P.E.I.’s North Shore.
Local residents reported the whale to Charlottetown’s Atlantic Veterinary College.
Dr. Pierre Yves Daoust, a wildlife pathologist at the AVC, said it may be a pilot whale.
He said there has been more incidents than usual of dead pilot whales or sightings of the whales in unusual places in the region this year.
He said while he’s not concerned yet, he is keeping an eye on the situation
Daoust said the whale, which is five to six metres long, is too decomposed to take samples for a necropsy.
He encouraged people to continue sending reports about pilot whale sightings, which might provide important details about why some of them are beaching.” Source.

Orionid Meteor Shower Peaks On Saturday Morning
By MARK DUNPHY – “The Orionid meteor shower will peak on Saturday morning, 22 October.
The Orionid meteors are made up of debris from a cloud of dust left behind by Halley’s Comet. As Earth passes through this cloud each year, some of the debris falls into Earth’s atmosphere where it heats up and glows brightly, forming the familiar meteors or ‘shooting stars’.
Forecasters expect more than 15 meteors per hour to fly across the sky on Saturday morning when the shower peaks.
The Orionids will appear to come from a source in the eastern sky beside a constellation called Orion, which can be found by looking for the well-known Orion’s Belt, a group of three bright stars in a line.
This year, the Moon and Mars are part of the show. They’ll form two vertices of a celestial triangle in the eastern sky on Saturday morning while the shower is most active; Regulus is the third vertex. Blue Regulus and red Mars are both approximately of 1st magnitude, so they are easy to see alongside the 35% crescent Moon. Many Orionids will be diving through the triangle in the hours before dawn.
‘We’re hoping for a great show for this year’s Orionid meteor shower tonight,’ said David Moore, Chairman of Astronomy Ireland. ‘The Moon doesn’t rise until long after midnight so with the darker skies we should be able to see more meteors than usual!'” Read more.

“KINGSTON, Ont. – A Montreal family couldn’t bear the ‘treachery’ of their three teenaged daughters having boyfriends, so they drowned them and the father’s first wife, pushing a car into a canal and staging the scene to look like an implausible accident, court heard Thursday.
Days after the bodies were found the father was recorded saying, ‘There is nothing more valuable than our honour.’
Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 41, her husband Mohammad Shafia, 58, and their son, Hamed Mohammad Shafia, 20, are each charged with four counts of first-degree murder.
Three teenage Shafia sisters, Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with Shafia’s first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad, 50, were found dead inside a submerged black Nissan Sentra discovered June 30, 2009 in the Rideau Canal. The family had stopped in Kingston on their way home from a trip to Niagara Falls.
An expert will be called to testify about honour killings and how in extreme cases, killing can be seen in some cultures as a way to restore honour to a family, the Crown attorney said Thursday at the outset of the trial. Disobedience by a female member of the family can cause shame and taint family honour, she said.
Laurie Lacelle quoted police wiretaps made surreptitiously in the days after the deaths that show the family’s concern for their honour.
‘Even if they hoist me up onto the gallows, nothing is more dear to me than my honour,’ Shafia said. ‘Let’s leave our destiny to God, and may God never make me, you or your mother honourless… There is nothing more valuable than our honour.’
When police began to suspect the three were involved in the deaths, they told the family they were examining a camera near the scene for clues, in the hopes this would prompt discussion among the Shafias in their car, which the police had bugged. They scoffed and immediately suspected police were bluffing.
‘If they had had any proof they would have come for us a long time ago,’ Shafia said.
Another wiretap recorded Shafia and Yahya talking about their daughters 20 days after they died.
‘If we remain alive… we have no tension thinking our daughter is in the arms of this or that boy, this or that man,’ Shafia said on a wiretap. ‘God’s curse on them for generations. May the devil …(expletive) on their graves. Is that what a daughter should be? Would a daughter be such a whore?'” Read more.

By Haaretz – “The next war with Israel will start in Tel Aviv, not on the northern border, Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah warned on Friday, the Lebanese Al-Akhbar newspaper reported.
‘If Israel decided to wage a war against Lebanon, we will not only break the Israeli soldiers’ bones, we will smash them,’ Nasrallah was quoted as saying during a meeting with Hezbollah members.
‘The war would be waged without any red lines, and [Hezbollah] would in return commit to the new equations,’ Nasrallah said.
‘[Hezbollah] has many surprises that will change the face of the region,’ he added.
Nasrallah also discussed recent reports that foreign spies had inflitrated Hezbollah. He said that Hezbollah would be able investigate itself and overcome the spying efforts.” Source.

First Ebola-Like Virus Native to Europe Discovered
“A team of international researchers has discovered a new Ebola-like virus – Lloviu virus — in bats from northern Spain. Lloviu virus is the first known filovirus native to Europe, they report in a study published in the journal PLOS Pathogens on Octobr 20th.
The study was a collaboration among scientists at the Center for Infection and Immunity (CII) at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII) in Spain, Roche Life Sciences, Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe, Grupo Asturiano para el Estudio y Conservación de los Murciélagos, Consejo Suerior de Investigaciones Científicas and the Complutense University in Spain.
Filoviruses, which include well-known viruses like Ebola and Marburg, are among the deadliest pathogens in humans and non-human primates, and are generally found in East Africa and the Philippines. The findings thus expand the natural geographical distribution of filoviruses.
‘The study is an opportunity to advance the knowledge of filoviruses’ natural cycle,’ said Ana Negredo, one of the first authors of the study.
Scientists at ISCIII analyzed lung, liver, spleen, throat, brain and rectal samples from 34 bats found in caves in Asturias and Cantabria, Spain, following bat die-offs in France, Spain and Portugal in 2002 affecting mainly one bat species.
They screened these samples for a wide range of viruses using the polymerase chain reaction, a molecular technique that allows scientists to amplify genetic material, and. detected a filovirus. Filoviruses include ebolaviruses and marburgviruses, two viruses associated with severe disease in humans and other primates.” Read more.

Some areas south of Nanaimo are closed to harvesting all bivalve shellfish (oysters, clams, scallops, mussels and geoducks). Other areas in and around Nanaimo are closed to harvest of all bivalve shellfish except manila clams, littleneck clams, oysters and mussels; or are open except for harvesting of butter clams and scallops.
