By Jason Motlagh, Bloomberg Businessweek – “Qaraqosh is one of the last refuges in northern Iraq for Christians fleeing persecution by the militants of Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, who swept into the region in June. A historic Christian city of 50,000 about 19 miles southeast of Mosul, Qaraqosh is under the formidable protection of the well-armed Peshmerga — the Kurdish fighters whose autonomous region disputes the area with both ISIL and the Iraqi central government based in Baghdad. Now, in a further effort to oust Christians from land they have inhabited for two millennia, the Islamic militants have begun turning off a precious utility: water.

Since taking Mosul on June 10, ISIL militants have squeezed Qaraqosh and nearby Christian villages by blocking the pipes that connect the communities with the Tigris river. Without a sufficient number of deep wells to fill the gap, the city must have water trucked in, at huge cost, from Kurdish-controlled areas just 15 miles away. Since ISIL took over key refineries in northern Iraq, the price of fuel has spiked across the region. The parched residents of Qaraqosh must pay about $10 every other day to fill up emergency water tanks, no small sum in this economically depressed part of Iraq.

Outside one of the town’s 12 churches, people queue from 6 a.m. until midnight to get their daily rations from a well. Flatbed trucks are joined by children with pushcarts and riders on bicycles bearing empty jugs. ‘Our lives revolve around water,’ says Laith, 28, a school teacher who returned with his family a day earlier from a suburb of Erbil, the Kurdish regional capital, 45 miles away, to which thousands of threatened Christians have migrated. Though aid agencies have erected several water depots around town, supplies are limited, barely enough to sustain large families in the 100-degree-plus heat. Plans to dig new wells will take at least several months to fulfill.

Christians have been fleeing ISIL-controlled territory since the militants and their allies overwhelmed the garrisons of the Baghdad government in Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city and its most Christian. The Islamic State, which sees itself as the restoration of the caliphate to rule all Muslims, immediately imposed anti-Christian rules, ordering Muslim employers to fire Christian workers. The homes of Christian religious leaders were ransacked and occupied by militants. A Christian population as old as the faith shrank from 3,000 families to several hundred in weeks.

On July 18, ISIL ordered non-Muslims to convert or pay a tax last imposed during the Ottoman empire. If not, they would face ‘death by the sword,’ according to a decree that was read out in city mosques and broadcast from loudspeakers around town.” Read more.

Mr. Fadel Younis, the official in charge for the Kifaat neighborhood, said that he had received a similar order and a threat from ISIS, and was warned that if he gives rations to Christians and Shiites he will be charged and prosecuted according to sharia law.” Read more.

Flashback: Iraq: ISIS Stops Christians From Selling Homes, Kills Real Estate Agents For Doing Business With Them – “The Assyrians have been prevented by Daash from selling their homes. Daash has killed real estate agents who do business with Christians. Unidentified gunmen assassinated the owner of the Zouhour Real Estates agency after he brokered the sale of a Christian house. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source at the Nineveh Operation Command said that ‘ten real estate agents have been killed between 2013 and 2014, most recently the owner of El Nour Realty Office in the region of Mouhandiseen after he was kidnapped and beheaded for selling the house of a Christian family.’” Read more.

By Tera Dahl, AINA – “The last Christian reportedly left Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul at 12:00pm on Saturday, ending over 6,000 years of Assyrian history in the city. Assyrians have lived in Mosul for over 6,000 years, converting to Christianity over 2,000 years ago. This all came to an end on Saturday, when the last Assyrian Christian left the city. On Thursday, July 17th, the Islamic State (IS) — formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) — released a statement demanding the Christians in Mosul either to convert to Islam, paying the jizya (tax on non-Muslims), leave the city, or be killed. The threat was to be implemented on Saturday. It is being reported locally that by noon yesterday, every Christian had chosen to leave.

Here in Erbil, about an hour an half away from Mosul by car, I have spoken with families who were forced to flee. They describe how ISIS invaded their homes, taking whatever they wanted, and threatening to kill them. The estimates are that over 500,000 refugees have fled Mosul after Islamists took control on June 10th, and the few remaining Christians left yesterday.

One group of Christians I spoke with said that when ISIS first invaded Iraq, they portrayed themselves as armed humanitarians but then they quickly undercut that message by implementing strict Sharia law, such as making women wear the full burqa and banning all western clothing. Those Muslims who stayed behind are being forced to comply with the new puritanical laws and now they, too, are trying to leave the city.

One resident of Mosul I spoke with said, ‘It is like the Taliban in Afghanistan before the U.S. invasion.’ There, Al Qaeda created the safe-haven from which they launched the 2001 attacks of 9/11 against the United States.

Some Iraqi Christians had called on the international community to help create a protected zone in Ninevah Province so as to provide protection for all minorities around the city of Mosul and to provide protection from future attacks by IS. While the proposal for a new Ninevah Province has been submitted to the Iraqi Parliament, it was not finalized. Because of the inaction both inside Iraq and the failure of the international community to heed the threats against Christians, the majority of the refugees who have just fled Mosul remain in danger of being attacked once more by IS as it continues its jihadi blitzkrieg across Iraq and Syria.

Several people I have spoken to in Iraq reported that members of IS speak foreign languages and are not from Iraq only. One person said an IS member was speaking an Afghan language and wearing Afghani clothing. Another person said they heard dialects from Pakistan, Libya, and even English.

Everyone I have spoken with has expressed their frustration with the international community’s lack of response to the crisis facing the people of Iraq. They blamed the United States for creating the current situation and for leaving the country so quickly and so creating the vacuum for IS to exploit.” Read more.

Speaking on ‘Breitbart News Saturday’ Dr. Sebastian Gorka addressed the subject after being asked by the host, Alex Marlow, why the press is not interested in the story.

Before Gorka gave his answer he called the situation ‘a Christian version of the Holocaust and nothing less.’

Gorka then went on to say that the West has done much to stand up for Muslims in the past two decades. ‘Whether it was to save the Muslims in Bosnia or the Albanians, Kosovars, and Muslims in Serbia, it is now time for a humanitarian operation to save the remaining Christians in Iraq,’ he said. ‘It is time for the American people and our representatives to do something for our co-religionists remaining in the Middle East.’

Much of Gorka’s position is based upon the fact that Muslims are relative newcomers to the religious confrontations in the Middle East and around the world. Christianity existed at least 600 years before Muhammad’s first revelation inspired Islam, but today it is Christians and Jews who are the primary targets in the region.

Gorka went on to issue a scathing criticism against the press by asserting that ‘the mainstream media are warped in terms of their world view. So when it comes to the idea of religious persecution, they say, ‘Well who really cares because I don’t believe in God. If you are not sophisticated enough to be a post-modernist secularist… tough on you!’’

As Gorka, who is the National Security Editor for Breitbart, explains, it was the in-your-face victory laps the Obama administration took about the killing of Osama bin Laden and the president’s role in personally ‘destroying’ al-Qaeda that gave rise to the formation of ISIS in Iraq and Syria…

Jihadists recognize the media’s ideology that ‘a dark skin person always has to be the victim,’ according to Garza. Islamic extremists use that knowledge heavily to their advantage to gain sympathy and to justify their violence.

Basically Islamic fundamentalism can be summed up in three words; justification, victimization and intolerance. That is the foundation of their strategy against the West.

Says Gorka, ‘Christians are politically targeted in America frequently; they are being physically targeted in Africa, Syria, and Iraq.’

Rarely do journalists and newspapers focus upon disrespect or insensitivity to Christians. Dark skinned minorities, however, are a constant narrative that frequently spurs debate for days or, even, months at a time. The Washington Redskins nickname is a prime example.” Read more.

AINA – “More than 200 Assyrian families fled in panic from Mosul on July 17 and 18 as the ISIS deadline for converting to Islam approached (AINA 2014-07-20). ISIS had issued a statement asking all Christians in Mosul to convert to Islam, pay the jizya, the poll tax on Christians, or face the sword. ISIS gave July 19 as the deadline to comply with its demands. Most Assyrians of Mosul responded by fleeing the city.

ISIS setup checkpoints at the Araby and Shallalat neighborhoods (AlSada and Biawaizah) and robbed and plundered Assyrians who were fleeing the city. ISIS took money from the Assyrians, as well as cars, cell phones, food, money, gold, including fake jewelry, electronic items and even medicines.

Over 85 families who had fled Baghdede (Qarawosh/Hamdaniya) reported being robbed of all of their possessions.

The fleeing Assyrians were terrified and feared for their lives. They made it safely to Dohuk (Assyrian Noohadra), where they joined thousands of other Assyrians who had fled earlier fro Mosul.

Hundred of Assyrians were forced to walk 70 kilometers (42 miles) to Tel Afar at night from Mosul after ISIS confiscated their automobiles. They carried children on their backs and arrived exhausted and dehydrated.

AINA has learned that nearly 15 Assyrian families have converted to Islam to avoid losing their life and wealth. In one instance, a young Assyrian women fled from her family who had converted, saying she did not want to become a Muslim. She is in safe hiding in North Iraq.” Source – AINA.

The teachings of Islam tell us that the Qur’an is the “word of Allah” as given to the man Mohammed by the “angel Gabriel.” As Revelation 13:15 says, the image of the Beast speaks and anyone who does not worship the image of the Beast should be killed. According to the “word of Allah” anyone who rejects the teachings of Islam rejects Allah, rejects his prophet, rejects his governance and rejects his laws. Because of their repudiation, they should therefore be killed (eg. Surah 4:89-91; 5:33; 9:11). If Islamic governments, religious authorities — and even Islamist fighters like ISIS who violently impose Islamic law everywhere they spread — all ignored the Qur’an, it would be dead. But they do not ignore it. To the contrary, they breathe life into Islam by forcing the Qur’an’s dictates upon all. For them, the “word of Allah” speaks loud and clear, and they will see to it that everybody hears, and listens. Or else …

The Prince of the Faithful Caliph Ibrahim — God Glorify him — will allow them to evacuate themselves only from the borders of the state Alkhalafah by Saturday, Ramadan 21, 1435 [July 19, 2014] noon hour, and after this date, the only thing between us and them is the sword.

FOX News – “Boko Haram extremists have killed more than 100 people and hoisted their black and white flag over a town left undefended by Nigeria’s military, just 53 miles from the northeastern state capital of Maiduguri, a civil defense spokesman and a human rights advocate said Saturday.

Hundreds of villagers in another northeast area, Askira Uba, are fleeing after receiving letters from the Islamic extremists threatening to attack and take over their areas, spokesman Abbas Gava of the Nigerian Vigilante Group said.

‘Nine major villages are on the run,’ he said.

Survivors said Saturday that insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades and lobbed homemade bombs into homes, and then gunned down people as they tried to escape the fires in the attack on Damboa town launched before dawn Friday. Most of the town has burned down, they said.

A human rights advocate said the extremists struck again as people were trying to bury the dead later Friday, and said the death toll is probably much higher than 100. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to reporters.

The only defense came from vigilantes armed with clubs and homemade rifles, Gava said.

The town had been under siege for two weeks since Boko Haram dislodged soldiers from a new tank battalion camp on its outskirts. It seemed that instead of offering protection, the camp drew the wrath of the extremists.

The Defense Ministry had claimed to have repelled the attack and killed at least 50 insurgents for the loss of six soldiers including the commanding officer. But locals said many soldiers were killed and the military was driven from the base. They said the extremists twice have ambushed military convoys trying to reach the base in the past week.” Read more.

Al Arabiya correspondent in Iraq Majid Hamid said the deadline set by the jihadist group was 12 p.m. Iraqi time (10 a.m. GMT). Hamid reported that many Christians fled the city on Friday. It is not clear if any remained after the deadline.

Patriarch Louis Sako told AFP on Friday: ‘Christian families are on their way to Dohuk and Arbil,’ in the neighboring autonomous region of Kurdistan. ‘For the first time in the history of Iraq, Mosul is now empty of Christians,’ he said.

Witnesses said messages telling Christians to leave the city by Saturday were blared through loudspeakers from the city’s mosques Friday.

A statement dated from last week and purportedly issued by ISIS that took over the city and large swathes of Iraq during a sweeping offensive last month warned Mosul’s Christians they should convert, pay a special tax, leave or face death.

‘We were shocked by the distribution of a statement by the Islamic State calling on Christians to convert to Islam, or to pay unspecified tribute, or to leave their city and their homes taking only their clothes and no luggage, and that their homes would then belong to the Islamic State,’ Sako said.” Read more.

According to Islam, the religiously-sanctioned extortion tax imposed upon Christians — called “jizya” — will one day come to an end, but it will not be abolished because Islam will suddenly have a change of heart and grant Christians equal status amongst Muslims. It will be abolished because at that time all Christians who refuse to convert to Islam will then be slaughtered for the glory of the magnificent and merciful “Allah.” After all, how can Muslims impose their “tax” upon Christians when the Islamic version of “Jesus” sees to it that no Christians are left to impose it upon? …

Hadith, AbuHurayrah Book 37, Number 4310, “Jesus … will descent (to the earth)… He will fight the people for the cause of Islam. He will break the cross, kill swine, and abolish jizyah. Allah will perish all religions except Islam.”

Muhammad said: ‘Fight against those who disbelieve in Allah. Make a holy war…When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to (accept) Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them…. If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the Jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them. (Sahih Muslim 4294.)

‘Convert, pay tax, or die, Islamic State warns Christians,’ Reuters, July 18, 2014:

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Islamist insurgents have issued an ultimatum to northern Iraq’s dwindling Christian population to either convert to Islam, pay a religious levy or face death, according to a statement distributed in the militant-controlled city of Mosul.

The statement issued by the Islamic State, the al Qaeda offshoot which led last month’s lightning assault to capture swathes of north Iraq, and seen by Reuters, said the ruling would come into effect on Saturday.

It said Christians who wanted to remain in the “caliphate” that the Islamic State declared this month in parts of Iraq and Syria must agree to abide by terms of a “dhimma” contract – a historic practice under which non-Muslims were protected in Muslim lands in return for a special levy known as “jizya”.

“We offer them three choices: Islam; the dhimma contract – involving payment of jizya; if they refuse this they will have nothing but the sword,” the announcement said.

A resident of Mosul said the statement, issued in the name of the Islamic State in Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh, had been distributed on Thursday and read out in mosques.

It said Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, which the group has now named Caliph Ibrahim, had set a Saturday deadline for Christians who did not want to stay and live under those terms to “leave the borders of the Islamic Caliphate”.

“After this date, there is nothing between us and them but the sword,” it said.

The Nineveh decree echoes one that the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, the former name for the Islamic State, issued in the Syrian city of Raqqa in February, demanding that Christians pay the jizya levy in gold and curb displays of their faith in return for protection.

The concept of dhimma, governing non-Muslims living under Islamic rule, dates back to the early Islamic era in the seventh century, but was largely abolished during the Ottoman reforms of the mid-19th century.

Mosul, once home to diverse faiths, had a Christian population of around 100,000 a decade ago, but waves of attacks on Christians since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion to topple Saddam Hussein have seen those numbers collapse.

The resident of Mosul who saw the Islamic State announcement estimated the city’s Christian population before last month’s militant takeover at around 5,000. The vast bulk of those have since fled, leaving perhaps only 200 in the city, he said.
