This story is also a reminder of why non-Muslims and foreigners should be wary of traveling to Qatar.

The ambassador of the Philippines to Qatar told Al Arabiya News on Friday that there are allegations of torture against three Filipinos being held in the Gulf state on espionage charges.

One man was sentenced to death and two to life in in prison this week after they were indicted of leaking information that could threaten the tiny rich state’s national security.

“All allegations of torture were relayed to Qatari officials, such as the Minister of Interior, the Attorney General and the Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee, all of whom promised to look into the matter,” the ambassador said.

He noted that the torture allegations were also raised in the lower court by the defense lawyer, “who argued that, in view of torture, their confessions were obtained involuntarily.”

“However, the court did not appreciate said fact,” Ambassador Relacion said.

According to the Qatari authorities, the Filipino pastors were spying on its military. Considering that that the Philippines and Qatar don’t exactly share a border or common military concerns and that Qatar’s military largely consists of princelings smuggling American weapons to Jihadists, that’s not a terribly convincing claim.

The Doha News said the three were charged of providing information “to intelligence officials in the Philippines about Qatar’s aircrafts, weaponry, maintenance and servicing records, as well as specific details about the names, ranks and phone numbers of staff members.”

The main defendant, the report said, allegedly received millions of riyals in exchange for spying services.

“He’s also alleged to have provided maps, internal reports and classified information about the Qatari Air Force base to Filipino officials, as well as recruiting the other two defendants, who worked in the engineering department of the first man’s company and were technicians at the air force base,” the report said.

This is the type of information that the UAE or the Saudis might be interested, not the Philippines.

By Raymond Ibrahim, CBN News – “Evidence has again emerged indicting that if Western mainstream media actually reported more on the sufferings of Christians throughout the Islamic world, their lot would likely improve.

Meriam Ibrahim, a woman who is imprisoned in Sudan and sentenced to death on the charge that she apostatized from Islam and converted to Christianity — and who recently gave birth to a baby girl in prison — was reportedly going to ‘be freed in a few days,’ according to a BBC report:

Abdullahi Alzareg, an under-secretary at the foreign ministry, said Sudan guaranteed religious freedom and was committed to protecting the woman.

Khartoum has been facing international condemnation over the death sentence.

In an interview with The Times newspaper, British Prime Minister David Cameron described the ruling as “barbaric” and out of step with today’s world (emphasis added).

Of course, soon after the BBC reported that Ibrahim would be freed, other reports appeared indicating that that is only a rumor — one that the BBC, which regularly tries to minimize the specter of Muslim persecution of Christians, jumped on — that Sudan was merely trying to save face before the international community.

According to the imprisoned Christian woman’s husband: ‘No Sudanese or foreign mediator contacted me. Maybe there are contacts between the Sudanese government and foreign sides that I’m not aware of.’

At any rate, why did Sudan say Ibrahim was going to be released? After all and despite what Sudan’s under-secretary says — that ‘Sudan guaranteed religious freedom and was committed to protecting the woman’ — Khartoum’s Islamist government upholds Islam’s apostasy law, which actually guarantees that born Muslims do not have ‘religious freedom.’

As just one example, back in June 2012 in Sudan, a Muslim woman divorced her husband after he converted to Christianity. The court automatically granted her custody of their two sons (according to Islamic law, children of divorced parents are to remain with the father, but if the latter is an apostate, they go to the mother). When the father tried to visit his children, his ex-wife threatened to notify authorities. ‘They might take the case to a prosecution court, which might lead to my sentencing to death according to Islamic apostasy law — but I am ready for this,’ the Christian man had said. ‘I want the world to know this. What crime have I done?’

And that’s the whole difference: ‘the world’ did not ‘know this,’ whereas the major media did report on Ibrahim’s plight, thereby exposing Sudan to international condemnation.

Precedents of this phenomenon — international outrage prompting Islamist governments to rethink their abuse of Christians — have occurred in other Muslim countries.” Read more.

Meriam Ibrahim’s Brother: She ‘Should Be Executed’ If She Refuses To Abandon Christianity – “Meriam Ibrahim, the woman sentenced to death in Sudan for apostasy, was ‘given a magic potion’ to bewitch her into leaving Islam – and should be executed for doing so, her brother has said. Al Samani Al Hadi Mohamed Abdullah said that he denounced his sister to the authorities because his family are ‘Muslim people.’ … ‘It’s one of two; if she repents and returns to our Islamic faith and to the embrace of our family, then we are her family and she is ours,’ he said. ‘But if she refuses she should be executed,’ he told CNN.” Read more.

We May Not See Their Faces, But God Knows Who They Are

Voice of the Persecuted – “Our Nigerian correspondent has confirmed another brutal attack by Boko Haram Islamic militants near the Cameroon border. They invaded Attagara village in Gwoza, a Local Government of Borno State killing over 80 Christians. The insurgents came in military Helux, disguised as Nigerian Military. They called the Christians to the church premises where over 45 Christians assembled, believing they were military personnel. Unfortunately all were killed at the church compound.

According to an eye witness demanding anonymity, a group of the insurgents overcame 30 nursing mothers and killed 17 of the children. ‘I saw it with my eyes’, the witness said. ‘But some of the women that were carrying females babies were not killed’, they added.

Another source who narrowly escaped, blamed the Military for negligence alleging that it was a deliberate attempt to wipe out the Christian community. ‘How can insurgents pass through Military Checkpoints in military uniforms and vehicles without being arrested? Something is fishy, the military base is not very far from the village but all of them refused to come. And the attack lasted for almost 6 hours, where was the Military?’ he asked.

Accounts of today’s attack clearly show that the Boko Haram came to seek revenge in regard to the killing of 7 insurgents by the community volunteer security team in a previous attack. The group had repelled against the insurgents on 1st June 2014, when they open fired on worshipers in the church that killed over 27 Christians. However, today’s attack would prove even more deadly as the number of casualties would not equal less than 80, because so many Christians were randomly shot.

Sources who counted the Christians villages lamented that, ‘No single Christian’s house is left standing. All were brought down to ashes.’ They proceeded to nearby villages in Aganjara, Agamanchiya, Ngoshe, Angurva and also burnt down the churches and the houses.” Read more.

Muslim Militants Dressed As Soldiers Kill At Least 200 During Raids In Nigeria, ‘They Begin To Shout Allahu Akbar’ And Fired Continuously Until All Were Dead – “Boko Haram militants dressed as soldiers have slaughtered at least 200 civilians in Nigeria. Witnesses said the extremists rounded up the helpless villagers promising to protect them – the same tactic used to kidnap 300 schoolgirls in April – before opening fire until almost all were dead. Community leaders in the three northeastern villages claimed the military failed to intervene, even though it was warned an attack was imminent… ‘We all thought they were the soldiers that we earlier reported to that the insurgents might attack us.’ … After people gathered in the village centres on the militants’ orders, the witness said, ‘they begin to shout `Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar’ on top of their voices. ‘Then they begin to fire at the people continuously for a very long time until all that gathered were all dead.'” Read more.

By Rebecca Black, The Belfast Telegraph – “A suspect letter triggered a security alert at the Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal.

The bulky package aroused suspicion when it arrived at the north Belfast church yesterday.

It has been at the centre of a storm over a controversial sermon during which Pastor James McConnell slammed Islam as ‘Satanic’ and a religion ‘spawned in Hell’.

Police were called the church yesterday afternoon.

It is understood the package did not contain anything explosive but rather a sinister message.

That included a black rose, a joker card from a pack of cards as well as a message which read, ‘you will reap what you sow’.

This incident follows a hacking attack on the church website last week.

In a statement the church said a group called Izzah Hackers, whom it claimed were Islamic hackers, took down their website.

It particularly affected webstreams of services on the site. The church said it put into place a number of pieces of technology to deal with the disruption.” Source – The Belfast Telegraph.

JNS – “A mob of Islamists burned several Christian-owned shops in a wave of violence directed against Christians in southern Egypt near the ancient city of Luxor.

The attack came just hours before the start of a trial for a young Christian man who is facing blasphemy charges over a series of Internet postings, The Associated Press reported.

Egyptian Christians have been disproportionately targeted in blasphemy cases. According to the U.S. State Department, nearly 40 percent of the defendants in blasphemy cases in Egypt are Christians, despite the fact that Christians constitute about only 10 percent of the population.

Islamists have also increasingly targeted Christian churches, homes, and businesses, in addition to abducting Christians for ransom or conversion to Islam.

‘In only one province (El-Minia), its Coptic bishop recently revealed that between June 30 and the present time, he recorded 90 kidnap cases of Copts, some of whom have been killed even after their families paid the demanded ransom,’ Halim Meawad—the Egyptian-born co-founder of Coptic Solidarity, a U.S.-based international Coptic Christian human rights organization — recently told JNS.org.

In a wave of violence last August, the Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters attacked more than 200 churches, Christian businesses, and private homes, leaving at least seven Christians killed and hundreds injured.” Source – JNS.

Boutrous’s real name was not given for security purposes. ‘Leaders in the mosques were telling Muslims to attack Christians and kill them,’ he said. The Jakarta Post – “On the anniversary of the introduction of the state ideology Pancasila on June 1, an act of intolerance occurred in Yogyakarta as residents and members of Ormas (mass organizations) attacked a Pentecostal church in Pangukan, Sleman regency, on Sunday.

The group stoned the church, which had been vacated by its congregation after Sunday Service, destroying the building’s glass windows.

Police and military officers were powerless to stop the violent act. The regency’s public order officers installed zinc fences after the police inspected the area.

Turmudzi, board member from the Islamic study group, Majelis Ta’lim Al Huda said that local residents, along with members of the Islamic Jihad Front (FJI) and Islamic People’s Forum (FUI) were responsible for damaging the church.

‘The reason is not related to worship. We attacked the church because it has no building permit,’ Turmudzi, who suffered injuries to his hands after stoning the church, claimed.

Separately, Sleman Deputy Regent Yuni Satya Rahayu admitted that the administration had not granted a building permit to the church, saying that the church board faked signatures of local residents to fulfill the requirements of the permit.

‘The development of the church has been problematic since the beginning. Rev. Nico Lomboan was not fair to the local people, whom he wanted to build the church,’ Yuni told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.

She said Sunday’s incident was the third such act since the construction of the church began, before the administration sealed the building in 2012.

Nico and members of the church’s congregation could not be reached for comment on Sunday.

This is not the first time that the FJI has been implicated in religious-based violence in Yogyakarta. On March 30, the group’s members reportedly attacked the Kemah Injil Indonesia (GKII) church in Girisubo district, Gunungkidul
regency.

FirstPost – “The spiritual leader of the world’s Anglicans urged Pakistan to treat all people equally on Wednesday during a trip designed to show his support for the embattled Christian community, saying many felt ‘under siege’.

The Archbishop of Canterbury arrived in Pakistan on Tuesday to meet Muslim and Anglican leaders at a time when Christians feel under attack from both authorities and their Muslim neighbours due to Pakistan’s oppressive blasphemy laws.

‘There is a considerable sense of anxiety, of being under siege,’ Justin Welby, a former oil executive, told Reuters outside a church in the eastern city of Lahore.

‘There was a very clear sense that people were nervous about the misuse of the blasphemy law, as a sort of a tool of politics, a way of gaining attention, or as a mob thing,’ he added, flanked by two Pakistani bishops.

He earlier told reporters: ‘Equality under the law is very important.’

Rights activists say a spike in the number of blasphemy cases in Pakistan is evidence of rising intolerance in the mainly Sunni Muslim South Asian state of 180 million people.

Blasphemy carries the death penalty in Pakistan and cases against both religious minorities and Muslims are rising.

Christians and other minorities such as Ahmadis have often been jailed or lynched for blasphemy for allegedly making jokes to neighbours or sending text messages mocking Muslims.

‘I pray for their blessing and for the government to be favourable to seeing that this is not a group that are seeking undue advantage but are only seeking to do good,’ Welby said.

‘The message was really to say to everyone, Christians have been a powerful force for good in this country over a very long time indeed, in schooling, in hospitals.’ Christians make up about four percent of Pakistan’s population and tend to keep a low profile in a country where Sunni Muslim militants frequently bomb targets they see as heretical …” Read more.

The Associated Press – “A priest in Central African Republic says at least 30 people have been killed after suspected Muslim rebels attacked a church where Christians were seeking refuge.

The Rev. Paul Emile Nzale told The Associated Press that the gunfire and grenade attack took place Wednesday afternoon in a displacement camp at the Church of Fatima in Bangui, the capital.

An Associated Press reporter counted at least 20 bodies taken to a hospital in the city because the morgue was not in service.

Wednesday’s attack is the largest in Bangui blamed on Muslim rebels since their Seleka coalition left power in January.

Most of the sectarian violence since then has been Christian militia fighters targeting Muslims, and there were already fears that Wednesday’s attack could prompt deadly reprisals.” Source – NY Daily News.
