The Christian Post – “When eighteen-year-old Hayat Hussein (pseudonym) called out to Jesus in her sleep, her strict Muslim father responded by tying her with ropes and threatening to kill her. Born into the Harari tribe of Jegol, an extremely devout and largely unreached lineage of Ethiopian Muslims, Hayat’s conversion to Christianity is a miraculous testimony of God calling His own, and of her courageous quest for truth against all odds.

Trained as a devout Muslim in the Koranic School, Hayat’s family expected her to be a model student of Islam. Conversion to Christianity within Hayat’s tribe would inevitably be life threatening. However, the Lord’s Spirit of truth was on the move.

To the discomfort of her teachers, teenage Hayat began asking questions about ‘the prophet Isa’ (Jesus). They warned her to not be overly inquisitive. When news of her inappropriate curiosity reached her father, he decided to send her to Saudi Arabia for more intensive Islamic schooling.

Hayat refused to go. Determined to know more about Jesus, she believed Christians could help her and she quietly devised a way to meet them. She left her parents’ house, and enlisted the help of her unsuspecting friends in finding a job in a barber shop.

When a Christian visited the shop, she secretly expressed her desire to go to church. Soon after, she was able to attend a church service, and received Christ as her Savior! Hayat was so excited to learn about Jesus, but the real battle for her life and faith was just about to begin.” Read more.

AFP – “Suspected Boko Haram Islamists killed more than 100 people in an attack on a village in Nigeria, a local senator said on Sunday.

The attackers stormed the village in Nigeria’s restive northeastern Borno state on Saturday, slaughtering scores of civilians and sending many others fleeing.

‘A hundred and six people, including an old woman, have been killed by the attackers, suspected to be Boko Haram gunmen,’ senator Ali Ndume told AFP.

‘Sixty of the dead have been buried while the rest are awaiting burial,’ he said, adding the attacks in the area were becoming ‘deadlier and more frequent by the day.’

The raid took place on Saturday in the mostly Christian village of Izghe in Borno, which has been under emergency rule since May last year in a bid to stop an Islamist rebellion that has claimed thousands of lives since 2009.

A local farmer who escaped by scaling the fence of his house and crawling on his belly for 40 minutes said the attackers had gone door-to-door looking for those hiding in their houses.

‘The attackers came around 9:30 pm (20.30 GMT) in six trucks and some motorcycles. They were dressed in military uniform,’ Barnabas Idi said. ‘They asked men to assemble at a place, and began hacking and slaughtering them.’

There were no security forces in the town at the time of the attack, he said.

The head of the local government in the area, Maina Ularamu, earlier told AFP: ‘From the latest information I have gathered, more than 60 people have been killed.’

‘We suspect that the gunmen were members of Boko Haram. They have taken over the village,’ said Ularamu.

‘They looted businesses and food stores and loaded all their spoils into vehicles owned by residents and fled into the bush,’ he added.

The official was speaking from Abuja and said he was preparing to return to Maiduguri, the state capital, to deal with the fallout of the attack.

Hundreds of villagers in Borno had already fled to Maiduguri after Boko Haram militants last week killed 43 people in two separate attacks.” Read more.

By Dalit Halevy, INN – “Four members of a Christian family of Syrian origin living in Alexandria, Egypt, were stabbed to death Monday. A man was seen walking out of their apartment holding a black plastic bag.

The father of the family, 44, who was employed in one of Sharm el-Sheikh’s hotels, was found stabbed in the stomach, the chest and the shoulder. His 35-year-old wife was stabbed in the neck, and so was the husband’s 43-year-old sister. Their six-year-old daughter was also found murdered.

The attackers started a fire in the kitchen, in an apparent attempt to set the entire apartment aflame and destroy evidence.

The large Christian community in Egypt, which numbers about 10 million people, has increasingly been coming under attack from Muslims in the last few years. Many Christians have been murdered and wounded, and over 100 churches, homes and businesses owned by Christians have been attacked, with some being burned down.

The Egyptian regime has blamed the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical Islamist forces for these attacks.” Source – INN.

By Lara Adejoro, Nigerian Times – “Unknown gunmen on Friday night attacked the EYN Church at Sabo Gari Gemadai Ward in Gulak, in Madagali local government area of Adamawa State killing a pastor and 10 members of his congregation.

Comfirming th attack, the Chairman of the local government, Mr. Ularamu Maina said, the pastor in-charge of the church was among those killed during the attack that occurred at about 8.30 pm while a vigil was going on in the church.

‘On entering the church, the attackers started shooting sporadically killing many people, including the pastor. The attack left the town in confusion as people ran helter skelter even as the attackers continued to unleash terror and wanton killings’.

The attack came hours after the Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Ahmadu Fintiri, visited Chakawa village, venue of last Sunday attack; where unknown gunmen struck in a Catholic Church in Chakawa village in Madagali local government area of the state to sympathize with the people and donate relief materials.

Speaking with newsmen, the Speaker called on the Federal Government to deploy more troops to the area to enable them cover all the nooks and crannies in the mountainous terrain.

He observed that the state of emergency presently operating in the state only covers the highways, leaving rural dwellers at the mercy of attackers.

He however warned that, unless urgent measures are adopted by the authorities, the people of Madagali local government, which shares common border with Borno State, might migrate enmasse.” Source – Nigerian Times.

By Carey Lodge, Christian Today – “An attack on a Catholic church in north-eastern Nigeria on Sunday has left at least 22 Christians dead and many more wounded, though local reports suggest the fatalities may be much higher.

Bishop Stephen Dami Mamza told the BBC that a group of men arrived in trucks towards the end of the usual Sunday Mass service in Waga Chakawa village in Adamawa state.

The attackers locked the doors of the church and fired into the congregation, cutting the throats of those who tried to escape. They detonated bombs and then went on a four hour rampage, burning houses and taking hostages from the village between 10am and 2pm.

Reverend Raymond Danbouye has confirmed that at least 22 people were killed in the attack and were buried in a service on Monday. ‘There is no protection. We cannot predict where and when they are going to attack. People can’t sleep with their eyes closed,’ Mamza laments.

It is suspected that Boko Haram is behind the attack – a group that was officially labelled a ‘Foreign Terrorist Organisation’ by the US government in November last year.

The organisation, which has ties to Al-Qaeda and whose name translates as ‘Western education is sacrilege’, is responsible for over two thousand deaths in Nigeria. Its leadership has declared intent to cleanse the country of Christians, eradicate Nigerian democracy and replace it with an Islamic state guided by Sharia law.

Boko Haram is also believed to have carried out a second attack on Sunday in Kawuri village in the neighbouring state of Borno.

At least 52 people were killed in the violence, which also involved gunfire and the detonation of bombs as a busy weekend market was packing up. Three hundred homes were subjected to arson attacks and many civilians who survived are suffering with terrible burns as a result.” Read more.

By Imma Ande and Joe Brock, Reuters – “Suspected insurgents armed with guns and explosives killed at least 62 people in northeast Nigeria, including at a church service, in a region where Islamist sect Boko Haram is resisting a military crackdown, witnesses said on Monday.

They killed 22 people by setting off bombs and firing into the congregation in the Catholic church in Waga Chakawa village in Adamawa state on Sunday, before burning houses and taking residents hostage during a four-hour siege, witnesses said.

On Monday, a separate assault by suspected members of the shady sect killed at least 40 people in Kawuri village, in remote northeastern Borno state, security officials said. No one immediately claimed responsibility for either attack.

President Goodluck Jonathan is struggling to contain Boko Haram in remote rural regions in the country’s northeast corner, where the sect launched an uprising in 2009.

Boko Haram, which wants to impose sharia law on a country split roughly equally between Christians and Muslims, has killed thousands over the past four and a half years and is considered the biggest security risk in Africa’s top oil exporter and second largest economy after South Africa.

Its fighters’ favorite targets have traditionally been security forces, politicians who oppose them and Christian minorities in the largely Muslim north.

The spokesman for the Catholic Diocese of Yola, Reverend Father Raymond Danbouye, confirmed 22 people killed in the church were buried at a funeral on Monday.

The military and police did not respond to requests for comment but one army source confirmed the church attack, asking not to be named because he wasn’t authorized to speak with the media…

Waga Chakawa is near the border with Borno state, in which the second attack occurred that killed at least 40 people.

Several witnesses put the figure at 50, although none had counted the numbers of bodies themselves. They added that the militants had burned down the village and set off multiple explosions, shooting anyone trying to flee.” Read more.

Morning Star News – “More than 100 Muslim extremists on Tanzania’s semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar stormed a church following an evening worship service on Jan. 11 and beat a visiting preacher, sources said.

The mob, including suspected members of Islamic extremist groups, meant to attack the Pentecostal Evangelism Fellowship of Africa (PEFA) congregation’s senior pastor, Bishop Daniel Kwilemba, who was not present at the church site in Kisauni village, outside Zanzibar City. Instead, they found a preacher visiting from the Tanzania mainland – William Saidi of the Free Pentecostal Church in Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, church leaders said.

‘These rowdy Muslims were shouting and yelling, saying, ‘We are looking for the bishop of the church to slaughter him – we are tired of the existence of this church near our mosque and the noise they are making,’’ said a church elder.

The mob fled when police arrived and rescued the pastor after he had suffered multiple contusions for which he is still taking medication, sources said. The assailants tore his shirt and suit coat.

Since the attack, the Muslim extremists have been issuing threats that the church should leave the area near Zanzibar City, capital of the semi-autonomous island in the Indian Ocean about 25 kilometers (16 miles) off the coast of Tanzania, sources said. A church member added that the congregation has been living in fear for their lives.

‘At the moment we cannot worship freely because we are being threatened,’ the church member said. ‘The Muslims are accusing us of making a lot of noise while they themselves make a lot of noise.'” Read more.
