‘A Monstrous Injustice’: Jewish Writer Laments The Silent Slaughter Of Christians, ‘We Shouldn’t Shy Away From Unpleasant Truths, Just Because The Media Does’

08/01/2013 Leave a comment

Although I wouldn’t classify Barack Hussein Obama as a “prominent Christian” like David Suissa does below, he is spot on in describing what has now become a “silent” sea of Christian persecution …

Matthew 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”

David Suissa, President of TRIBE Media Corp.

David Suissa, President of TRIBE Media Corp.

By David Suissa, Jewish Journal – “The Middle East may be a raging wildfire, but the eyes of the world are on the revival of the Israeli-Palestinian peace dance — that all-too-familiar game where the Jewish state makes concessions (such as releasing terrorists) for the privilege of talking to an enemy who demonizes Jews, glorifies terrorists and has already rejected three peace offers.

It’s a testament to the general success of the Israeli state that after returning from 10 days there, I am a lot more concerned with what’s happening in the rest of the Middle East.

After the heady promise of the Arab Spring two years ago, the situation in the Middle East is now more like the Arab Volcano — with sectarian violence erupting in many areas and the Iranian nuclear threat hovering like a dark force. Instead of unleashing the power of democracy, the Arab Spring has cooked up a lethal brew of festering hatred, economic misery and vicious power struggles.

In contrast to that chaos, Israel feels like Club Med.

But hidden in all the chaos is a monstrous injustice that has received very little media attention: The rampant persecution of Christians.

‘Few people realize that we are today living through the largest persecution of Christians in history,’ Bruce Thornton, research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, wrote on the institute’s Web site. ‘Estimates of the numbers of Christians under assault range from 100 [million] to 200 million. According to one estimate, a Christian is martyred every five minutes.’

It’s odd that prominent Christians like President Barack Obama and Pope Francis have been utterly silent about this humanitarian tragedy.

As Kirsten Powers wrote recently in USA Today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel asserted late last year that ‘Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world,’ while former French President Nicholas Sarkozy warned in a 2011 speech that ‘Christians face a particularly wicked program of cleansing in the Middle East, religious cleansing.’

The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg told Powers ‘he is shocked that American Christians aren’t regularly protesting outside of embassies drawing attention to this issue,’ and he called the persecution of Christians in the Middle East ‘one of the most undercovered stories in international news.’

Eritrea: Authorities Subject 39 Christian High School Students To Beatings, Hard Labor Because Of Their Faith

08/01/2013 Leave a comment

By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News – “Eritrean authorities are punishing 39 Christian high school students by subjecting them to beatings and hard labor, according to Open Doors.

Sources told Open Doors that after completing their mandatory four-month military training, the students were arrested for their ‘Christian beliefs and for their commitment to Christ’ and are being held at the SAWA military training center; sources also report that Eritrean authorities are threatening them with long prison sentences should they fail to renounce Christ.

Since 2002, worship outside the government-sanctioned Sunni Muslim, Eritrean Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Evangelical Lutheran Church of Eritrea has been forbidden; earlier this year, the government began a renewed crackdown on all Christians outside state-approved churches, according to Open Doors.

The architect of this religious repression is President Isaias Afewerki who has been in power since Eritrea’s liberation in 1991. After a two-year border war with Ethiopia, Afewerki began cracking down on anything he perceived as a threat to Eritrea’s national unity, wrote Elizabeth Kendal in the November 2012 Religious Liberty Prayer Bulletin.

‘He cancelled elections and closed all independent media. Opposition figures – politicians, activists and journalists – were removed, mostly to underground secret prisons for the ‘disappeared.”

According to Kendal, by the end of 2010, an estimated 3,000 Protestant Christians were incarcerated for their faith inside shipping containers at desert camps and in underground prison cells.

‘The conditions are inhumane: Children and the elderly are amongst the prisoners sharing skin diseases, dysentery and other horrors in confined, unventilated spaces. Torture is routine … several Christians have died in custody, and others have perished in the desert trying to escape.’

Christians make up 47 percent of Eritrea’s population of 5.2 million, according to Operation World.” Source – Worthy News.

Nigeria: Facing Imminent Death, Christian Pastor Tells Muslim Executioners ‘I Will Never Deny My Savior’

When killers made their stand this man of God made known his own …

Matthew 16:24-25, “Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.’”

Romans 5:3-4, “And not only [that], but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

Charisma News – “On May 14, in plain view of his wife and one daughter, the Rev. Faye Pama Musa, general overseer of the Rhema Assembly International Church and secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State, was gunned down by suspected Boko Haram Islamic terrorist members.

A month later, Open Doors workers visited his widow, Mercy, at her home in Maiduguri. The widow and mother of four warmly received the visitors into her house.

When she sat down to speak to Open Doors workers, she burst into tears. ‘True friendship is what I am seeing today,’ she said. ‘How did you manage to come to Maiduguri at this dangerous time when people are vacating the city? You are most welcome here in Jesus’ name. I am so happy to see you again.’

The events of the evening of May 14 will never be forgotten. Musa, Mercy and some of their children were home. While Mercy was preparing supper, Zion, a daughter who was sitting outside, noticed three armed men jumping the fence. She ran into the living room to alert her father. Musa glanced through the window and saw the intruders by the front door. The next moment the men forced their way into the house, shouting, “Everybody on the floor!”

Musa instantly knew why the men had come and tried to escape through the back door and over the fence. But they caught up with him and dragged him to the porch.

‘Today you are a dead man. Call your Jesus to help you, Mr. CAN man,’ one of the terrorists shouted.

Musa did not give up without a fight. While wrestling with the three men, he continually called upon Jesus. For Zion, her father’s desperate battle was too much to bear. She got off the floor and ran to the porch to where her father was struggling. She begged the attackers to spare his life. They fired a shot at her and missed. But the shock was too much for her and she fainted.

The struggle continued. Mercy heard her husband say, ‘I will never deny my Savior.’ As she crawled to the door, she saw the attackers shoot him three times in the head. Musa died on the spot. The attackers left in a car.

‘Pastor Musa will be remembered as a father, a friend and as a role model. It will take the church in Borno a long time to cope with the enormous loss of this bold yet graceful leader and mentor,’ said an Open Doors spokesman. ‘His deepest desire was to see a strong church pressing forward despite perpetual harassment and killings at the hands of extremists.'” Read more.

Nigerian Pastor: ‘Open Season’ On Christian Killings By Islamists Have Made Us An Endangered Species

Matthew 24:22,27, “And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake those days will be shortened… For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.”

By David Lev, INN – “Christians in Nigeria are an endangered species, according to Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, president of the Christian Association of Nigeria. Oritsejafor met this week with U.S. lawmakers, pleading for help in combating the Islamist groups, which have mercilessly attacked Christian communities for the past several years – making Nigeria one of the most dangerous places in the world for Christians.

Currently there are some 80 million Christians in the country, but many of them, especially in the north of the country, have faced terror and death at the hand of Islamist groups such as Boko Haram, whose leader, Abubaker Schekau, has personally murdered hundreds of Christians, and helped plan the murders of many more. In 2012, more than 100 Christians died on average each month in northern Nigeria, many by members of the Jihad group.

In a recent troubling development, Oritsejafor told legislators that Islamists have begun targeting not only churches, but also schools – shooting up classrooms with children in attendance. Islamists have declared all schools except those teaching Islam illegal, and Boko Haram is intent on enforcing that law, as well as others drawn from Sharia Islamic law. ‘It is open season on Nigeria’s Christians,’ Oritesejafor told the legislators.

Speaking at an event at the National Press Club, Oritsejafor said that the U.S. was perhaps the last hope for Nigerian Christians. ‘America has a strong history of civil rights,’ he said, ‘and my hope is that our brothers here can awaken the conscience of humanity to stop this genocide.'” Source – INN.

It was the second major killing of Christians in the Chibok area. Early in December, 10 Christians were also killed in the area… News of the killings emerged after President Goodluck Jonathan questioned whether deadly Islamist attacks on churches in his country and other violence worldwide could be signs of coming ‘end times’… The attack followed another gruesome killing Friday that saw attackers slit the throats of 15 Christians in a pre-dawn raid in Musari …” Read more.

Guinea: At Least 95 Dead After Angry Muslim Mobs Torch Churches, Christians Homes, Businesses …

In a nation that is overwhelmingly Muslim, Islam is the fuel that feeds the flame of violence …

A Methodist church burned in Nzérékoré

A Methodist church burned in Nzérékoré

WorldWatch Monitor – “Judicial authorities in Guinea are investigating an outburst of deadly violence two weeks ago that left 95 people dead and 130 wounded. The murder of a suspected thief on July 14 in Koulé, a city 40 kilometres from Nzérékoré, the regional capital of Forested Guinea, has led to acts of retaliation and a wave of violence between members of Guerzé and Konianké ethnic groups.

Very quickly, the incidents became a sectarian conflict between Christians and Muslims, with the destruction of a number of Christians’ properties, including several churches.

In Nzérékoré, about five churches, four houses of pastors, and an undetermined number of shops and properties were burned or looted, witnesses told World Watch Monitor. A mosque was also reported burned and one Muslim cleric killed. In Beyla city, 150 kilometres northeast of Nzérékoré, attacks targeting Christians were particularly violent, according to a Catholic priest contacted by World Watch Monitor.

‘The two Catholic and Protestant churches have all been ransacked and burned,’ said the priest, identified as Fr. Joseph. ‘Almost all the houses and shops belonging to Christians or people affiliated with Christians, have not escaped the fury of attackers.’

The offices and other buildings within the Catholic compound, including the Presbyter and the nuns’ quarters, were looted or burned.

Elsewhere in Beyla, the Center for Youth Development, an internet café, a conference room, a library and a primary school were ransacked.

The priest said a physician and Beyla’s regional deputy of health services, Dr. Tolon Loua, was killed during the violence.

‘He was inside of his house when the assailants arrived and set it on fire,’ he said. ‘Badly burned, he was transported to the hospital where he was later declared dead.’

An undetermined number of people remain missing. Several Christian families found refuge in military camps and surrounding villages. Churches and local NGOs are trying to place them with other families…

A number of Islamic fundamentalist groups are established in the southeast region, particularly in Beyla, a city perceived as a centre of Islam in Guinea. Beyla was one of the main cites of Wassoulou Empire, an Islamic state founded in the 17th century by Samori Touré, a military and political leader known for his opposition to the French colonial occupation. Today the city is 99 per cent Muslim, and Christians are a tiny minority of workers.

‘These incidents have served as a pretext for Islamist groups to assert their opposition to the Christian presence,’ Guilavogui said.” Read more.

Slaughter: At Least 45 Killed In Northern Nigeria After Islamist Bombings Target Churches, Christian-Owned Businesses

The death toll continues to rise …

John 16:2b, “… the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God.”

Morning Star News – “Suspected terrorists from the Islamic extremist Boko Haram group set off four bombs that hit two churches in Kano city on Monday night (July 29), killing at least 45 people, sources said.

The Rev. Ramsey Noah, chairman of the Kano state chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), told Morning Star News by phone the Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were planted near three churches, blasting two of them as well as nearby Christian-owned businesses. The four devices were detonated minutes apart between 9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. in the Sabon Gari area of the city, sources said.

Christians were meeting at Christ Salvation Pentecostal Church at 41 New Road when one explosion hit, and 39 bodies were recovered in the area, Christian leaders said. Christians were also meeting at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church as another bomb went off, and an explosion apparently targeting Peniel Baptist Church did not affect the structure, Noah said.

‘On Monday evening at about 9 p.m., four bombs exploded in the Sabon Gari area of Kano,’ Noah told Morning Star News. ‘The bombs we believe were targeted at three churches located in the area. There were worshippers in the two churches affected at the time having evening Bible study programs.’

Total deaths from the church bombings were unknown at press time, but Noah said that as security personnel moved into the area, church leaders had established that at least 45 people in the predominantly Christian area had been killed.” Read more.

Muslim Persecution of Christians: May, 2013, ‘Christians Murdered Nonstop In Nigeria’

07/30/2013 2 comments

Matthew 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”

By Raymond Ibrahim, Gatestone Institute – “Nigeria continues to be the most dangerous nation for Christians—where more Christians have been killed last year than all around the Muslim world combined. In one instance, Boko Haram Muslim militants stormed the home of a Pentecostal pastor and secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria, and opened fire on him, instantly murdering him.

Separately, other Boko Haram gunmen killed 14 Christians, including the cousin and two nephews of the Rev. Moses Thliza, head of a Christian organization dedicated to preventing AIDS and caring for AIDS patients and orphans: Said Thliza: ‘My cousin, Bulus [Paul] Buba, was dragged out at gunpoint from his house by the Boko Haram members. They collected his car keys, demanded money and asked him three times to renounce his Christian faith, and three times he declined to do so [prompting them to execute him]. The attackers met three guards on duty, killed two of them by cutting their necks with knives, and then proceeded to take the third guard, Amtagu Samiyu, at gunpoint to lead them to where the keys of the deputy governor’s house is.’

As for some Christians observing a wake two kilometers away, Boko Haram Muslims asked to know what was going on there, and when they learned that people were saying prayers for an elderly Christian woman who had died, they charged in and shot into the crowd. ‘The attackers went there and shot indiscriminately at the worshippers, killing eight Christians—two women and six elderly men,’ said Thliza. ‘In all, we buried 14 Christians. Some were injured and taken to the hospital.’

Despite all this, when the Nigerian government tried militarily to confront and neutralize Boko Haram, the Obama administration criticized it, warning it not to violate the ‘human rights’ of the Islamic terrorists.

Categorized by theme, the rest of May’s roundup of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes (but is not limited to) the following accounts, listed by theme and in country alphabetical order, not necessarily according to severity:

Church Attacks

Bosnia: The Serbian Orthodox church of Saint Sava in Sarajevo, where Muslims make up approximately half of the population, was ‘desecrated‘ and six of its windows panes broken. The unidentified vandals wrote ‘Allah’ in dark paint twice on the church wall. A month earlier, unidentified persons tried to set the church on fire.

Central African Republic: According to the Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace, since an Islamic rebel leader proclaimed himself president, the situation for Christians, has ‘deeply worsened.’ The organization warns against ‘the evil intentions for the programmed and planned desecration and destruction of religious Christian buildings, and in particular the Catholic and Protestant churches…. All over the country the Catholic Church has paid a high price.’ Several dioceses have been seriously damaged and plundered, and priests and nuns attacked (more information below, under ‘Dhimmitude.’)

Egypt: Two Coptic Christian churches were attacked, one in Alexandria, the other in Upper Egypt. St. Mary in Alexandria was attacked by Molotov cocktails and bricks, causing the gate to burn and the stained glass windows to shatter. One thousand Christians tried to defend the church against 20,000 Muslims screaming ‘Allahu Akbar’ [‘Allah is Greater’]. One Copt was killed and several injured. Nigeria: Dozens Killed After Multiple Bombs Explode In Christian Neighborhood Of Kano

07/30/2013 1 comment

Revelation 13:15, “And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.”

By IBRAHIM GARBA and MICHELLE FAUL, The Associated Press – “Multiple explosions at a bar and entertainment area in a Christian quarter of Nigeria’s northern and mainly Muslim city of Kano killed at least 24 people, a hospital official said Tuesday.

Lt. Ikedichi Iweha, a spokesman for the Military Joint Task Force, said earlier Tuesday that 12 people died at the scene and ‘a couple’ of people were wounded in Monday night’s attack, which he blamed on suspected members of the Islamic extremist Boko Haram network.

But the spokesman for Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital said their mortuary had 24 bodies brought from the scene and from the city’s Murtala Muhammad Specialists Hospital.

The teaching hospital also was treating nine people wounded in the blasts, said spokesman Aminu Inuwa. It was unclear how many others might be in treatment at other hospitals.

More than a hundred people gathered outside the hospital morgue, weeping and screaming in anguish Tuesday afternoon. Military officials would not allow them into the morgue, so many said they have no idea if missing loved ones are dead or alive.

Nigeria is fighting an Islamic uprising by extremists based mainly in the northeast, where the government has declared a state of emergency. Kano city and state are in the northwest and not part of that emergency. Boko Haram, which means ‘Western education is forbidden,’ wants to impose Islamic law in all of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation of more than 160 million divided almost equally between Christians who live mainly in the south and Muslims who dominate the north.

Monday night’s attack at just after 9 p.m. (21:00 GMT) rocked an area popular for its outdoor bars, blaring music, snooker tables and table tennis — a place where people have fun, which is anathema to the militants.

Witness Kolade Ade said at least one blast appeared to come from a Mercedes-Benz parked beside the bar.

‘After the first bomb, I threw myself into the canal (drain) to hide. There were at least three blasts,’ he said.” Read more.

It is expected that a complete ‘cleansing’ of buildings owned by Christians will occur within a matter of days or weeks by armed men from the Wahhabi ‘Faruq Brigade.’ A source in the Orthodox metropolitan’s office told al-Haqiqa that armed men from the Faruq Brigade went to the homes of the Christians, house by house, in the neighborhoods of Hamidiya and Bustan el-Diwan, informing them that they must immediately leave their homes and the city of Homs.” Read more.

Pakistan: Wheelchair-Bound Christian Man Tortured In Front Of Wife Because Of ‘Blasphemous’ Text Message

07/30/2013 2 comments

For peaceful purposes …

By Theodore Shoebat, Frontpage Mag – “On 21st July 2013, a crippled Christian man, Shafaqat Emmanuel, and his wife, Shagufta Kausar, were arrested in Gojra District for allegedly sending blasphemous text messages to local Muslims. Police registered the FIR 407/13 under sections 295-B and 295-C. Complainants Muhmmad Hussain and Anwar Mansoor Goraya, Tehsil Bar Association president, alleged they received the blasphemous text messages from the number registered on Shagufta Kausar’s name.

The Station House Officer (SHO) of Gojra City Police Station, Mr. Muhammad Nasir, said:

‘The police had verified that the SIM used to send the blasphemous text messages was registered in Shagufta’s name whereas her husband admitted to use her phone to send the messages to Hussain’

However, Shagufta told the police that they had lost the cell phone a month earlier. She denied the charges but police started 3rd degree torture on Shafaqat Masih, who is crippled and physically challenged. They tortured him in front of his wife and four children. Police forced him to confess to the charges or implicate others. Otherwise, they would start torturing his wife Shagufta. Then Shafaqat admitted that he had sent the messages, whereas when our lawyers visited Shafaqat Emmanuel, he denied the charges and stated:

“There is no man who can stand to see his wife being tortured by police, so to save my wife, I confessed.”

He further told the our legal team that:

“When we lost the phone and the SIM, I visited the nearby mobile shop many times to block our mobile SIM.”

According to our investigation, police confirmed Shafaqat’s statement with the mobile shop. The shop owner says that he came twice to block his SIM card.

Even after knowing the facts — that the couple had lost their cell phone and SIM card — police still registered an FIR against the crippled man and his uneducated wife.

Shagufta was working in ‘St. John Cathedral School’ as a maid. She was the only working hand in the family, as Shafaqat Emmanuel was in a wheelchair due to a firearm injury that paralyzed his lower body. The couple has four children – Zain (12), Danish (10), Joshua (8), and Sara (6).

According to the police authority, Muslim clerics, local lawyers and a Bar official were so furious that they remained in the police station until the FIR was written. Gojra is a religiously volatile city where a week ago a young Christian man was sentenced to life in prison on the same charges.” Read more.

Colorado: ‘Islamist Jihadist’ Threatens To Murder Christians In The Next Two Weeks, They Will Be ‘Destroyed’

A James Holmes copycat wannabe? And since Mormons are non-Muslims, he threatened to kill them, too. Spiritual issues notwithstanding, my first inkling tells me that this man has mental issues more than anything else. But then again, so does every self-proclaimed “Islamist jihadist” …

Fort Collins Police Protect Church During Sunday Service

Coloradoan – “Fort Collins police have asked local religious organizations to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior after a self-proclaimed ‘Islamist jihadist’ threatened Mormons and Catholics ‘would be destroyed’ in the next two weeks, a memo sent by authorities said.

The man hadn’t been seen in the Fort Collins area as of Sunday, and there is no immediate danger to the public, Fort Collins Police Services Sgt. Mike West told the Coloradoan.

No further details, including the man’s identity, were immediately available. Threats were made in general regard to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Catholic Church; no local organizations were specifically referenced in the FCPS memo.

Rev. Steven Voss said the Archdiocese of Denver shared with him on Friday the Fort Collins Police Services memo and reading its words of caution made his ‘blood run cold.’ But between Sunday Masses at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 300 W. Mountain Ave., Voss said he’s ‘pretty confident’ he and his parishioners won’t have an interaction with the man he was told was ‘nonviolent.’

To give worshipers a sense of peace, he asked an FCPS officer to keep watch during weekend services.

When he read the police bulletin during Mass Saturday, an ‘audible gasp’ escaped those seated in the pews. A day later, ‘after the initial, kind of having your breath taken away moment,’ there was a greater sense of calm, he believes was due in part to police presence.” Read more.

Mark 13:19, 24-26, “For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be… But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.”

By Bruce Thornton, Defining Ideas – “Few people realize that we are today living through the largest persecution of Christians in history, worse even than the famous attacks under ancient Roman emperors like Diocletian and Nero. Estimates of the numbers of Christians under assault range from 100-200 million. According to one estimate, a Christian is martyred every five minutes. And most of this persecution is taking place at the hands of Muslims. Of the top fifty countries persecuting Christians, forty-two have either a Muslim majority or have sizeable Muslim populations.

The extent of this disaster, its origins, and the reasons why it has been met with a shrug by most of the Western media are the topics of Raymond Ibrahim’s Crucified Again. Ibrahim is a Shillman Fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center and an associate fellow of the Middle East Forum. Fluent in Arabic, he has been tracking what he calls ‘one of the most dramatic stories’ of our time in the reports and witnesses that appear in Arabic newspapers, news shows, and websites, but that rarely get translated into English or picked up by the Western press. What he documents in this meticulously researched and clearly argued book is a human rights disaster of monumental proportions.

In Crucified Again, Ibrahim performs two invaluable functions for educating people about the new ‘Great Persecution,’ to use the label of the Roman war against Christians. First, he documents hundreds of specific examples from across the Muslim world. By doing so, he shows the extent of the persecution, and forestalls any claims that it is a marginal problem. Additionally, Ibrahim commemorates the forgotten victims, refusing to allow their suffering to be lost because of the indifference or inattention of the media and government officials.

Second, he provides a cogent explanation for why these attacks are concentrated in Muslim nations. In doing so, he corrects the delusional wishful thinking and apologetic spin that mars much of the current discussion of Islamic-inspired violence.

Ibrahim’s copious reports of violence against Christians range across the whole Muslim world, including countries such as Indonesia, which is frequently characterized as ‘moderate’ and ‘tolerant.’ Such attacks are so frequent because they result not just from the jihadists that some Westerners dismiss as ‘extremists,’ but from mobs of ordinary people, and from government policy and laws that discriminate against Christians. Rather than ad hocreactions to local grievances, then, these attacks reveal a consistent ideology of hatred and contempt that transcends national, geographical, and ethnic differences.

In Afghanistan, for example, where American blood and treasure liberated Afghans from murderous fanatics, a court order in March 2010 led to Read more…

Turkey: Islamist Government Is ‘Erasing The Christian Past, Reviving Ottomanism’

Intending to “change times” isn’t simply confined to rewriting history. It also encompasses the elimination of it …

Daniel 7:25a, “He shall speak pompous words against the Most High, Shall persecute the saints of the Most High, And shall intend to change times and law …”

The Economist – “ON JULY 5th the mufti of Trabzon gathered with other citizens for the first Friday prayers of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, not at a mosque but at an ancient Byzantine church. The gathering was a symbolic re-enactment of the conquest in 1462 of this ancient Greek Black Sea port by Mehmet II, the Ottoman sultan who had wrested Constantinople from the Byzantines in 1453. He marked his victory by converting the Haghia Sophia cathedral of today’s Istanbul into a mosque.

Haghia Sophia’s sister of the same name in Trabzon is less grand. Yet with its dazzling frescoes and magnificent setting overlooking the sea, the 13th-century building is regarded as one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture. As with other Christian monuments, the Haghia Sophia in Trabzon has become a symbol in the battle between secularists and Islamists. It was converted into a mosque around the 16th century and, after other incarnations, became a museum in 1964. But the Islamists won the last round in 2012 when a local court accepted the claim by the General Directorate of the Pious Foundations, the government body responsible for Turkey’s historic mosques, that the Haghia Sophia belonged to the foundation of Mehmet II and was being ‘illegally occupied’ by the culture ministry.

The decision provoked surprising anger in a city notorious for its ultra-nationalist views. ‘It’s about erasing the Christian past, reviving Ottomanism,’ says a local historian. ‘There are enough mosques in Trabzon, half of them empty, what was the need?’ chimes in Zeki Bakar, a neighbourhood councillor. A lawsuit has been brought to undo the conversion.

Even so, the mildly Islamist Justice and Development (AK) government carried out the conversion in time for Ramadan. A red carpet now obscures exquisite floor mosaics. Shutters and tents beneath the central dome shield Muslim worshippers from ‘sinful’ paintings of the Holy Trinity. Shiny steel taps with plastic stools for ablutions clutter a once-verdant garden filled with ancient sculptures.” Read more.
