Muslim Persecution Of Christians: November, 2012
Matthew 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”
By Raymond Ibrahim, Gatestone Institute – “Reports of Christian persecution by Muslims around the world during the month of November include (but are not limited to) the following accounts. They are listed by form of persecution, and in country alphabetical order, not necessarily according to severity:
Church Attacks
Egypt: Following Friday afternoon prayers in northern Cairo, Salafi Muslims went to the construction site of a Coptic Orthodox Church service center, hanging a sign that read, ‘Masjed El Rahman,’ or ‘Mosque of the Merciful.’ They claimed that the church did not have the necessary permits to exist, even though local officials confirmed the church did have them. The Salafis occupied the construction center for some 24 hours. One of them reportedly said: ‘We have a small mosque at the end of the street and the presence of a church here will offend us.’
Indonesia: Authorities in West Java sealed shut the worship building of yet another Christian Church (HKI) congregation that had been meeting for 20 years, after prominent Muslims persuaded residents to withdraw their signatures approving the church’s existence.
According to Indonesian law—and echoing Sharia law, which requires local Muslim approval for non-Muslim endeavors—60 Muslim signatures are required for the church to exist. Because many Muslims withdrew their signatures, police sealed off the building. ‘While other churches in West Java have faced loud protests from Islamists dedicated to close them down, last week’s closure took place quietly in 10 minutes,’ said one source. Also, a mob numbering in the hundreds and grouped under an Islamic banner surrounded two separate churches, threatening to use force to stop the congregations from building additional structures in their compounds. Some 200 police and military held them at bay.
Kenya: A blast at a church inside a police compound in the town of Garissa killed a police officer, who also served as the church’s pastor, and injured at least 13 other people. The Islamic terrorist organization, al-Shabaab (‘the Youth’) is believed to be responsible. Their latest strategy is to hire ‘poor youths from Christian backgrounds’ and use them to bomb Kenya’s churches. ‘Using Muslims with a Christian background make it difficult to identify and stop would-be attackers, as they can seamlessly blend into a Christian congregation,’ say church leaders.
Nigeria: November 25 was yet another bloody Sunday for church goers in the Muslim-majority north of Nigeria: 11 people were killed when the Protestant church of St. Andrew was attacked by two consecutive suicide bombings: Shortly after mass, one suicide-bomber drove a minibus, loaded with explosives, into the church. Then, after a group of soldiers and civilians gathered on the spot, another jihadi detonated a car bomb, leaving Read more…

Egypt: Muslim Group Threatens Christians, Promises Jihad Against Military If They Do Not Move Against Copts
By MidEast Christian News – “An armed Islamic movement calling itself the ‘Brigade of Muslims’ released a statement on Saturday threatening Egypt’s Coptic Christians and asking them to pay tribute.
‘Egypt is an Islamic country and will be ruled according to Shariah,’ the statement added.
The movement threatened all Egyptian media professionals who ‘mock religion and Islamic rule,’ adding that it has a special list of media professionals and their persistence in mocking will result in the ‘shedding of their blood in the ugliest way.’
The movement explained that it has been established because of the strife being plotted against the country and the plans of enemies of Islam, both at home and abroad.
The movement accused Copts of trying to create a ‘separate Coptic state,’ accused the National Salvation Front of involvement in the burning of Egypt, and accused the so-called corrupt media of distorting the image of Muslims and Islamic rule.
The movement noted its approach is jihad, and it would fight the Egyptian army and Interior Ministry if they do not stand up to ‘Copts and their helpers.’
‘Let the unbelievers and the hypocrites know we are as keen on dying for the sake of God as they are keen on life,’ the movement confirmed.” Source – CP Africa.

Turkey: Planned Assassination Of Christian Pastor May Signal Further Attacks Against Turkish Christians
By BARIŞ ALTINTAŞ, CAHİT KILIÇ, Today’s Zaman – “One person was arrested last week in Kocaeli on charges of planning an attack on the İzmit Protestant Church to assassinate its pastor following a round of detentions in the town shortly after the Kocaeli Police foiled the alleged plot, which has brought fears that an illegal group behind many attacks on non-Muslims in 2006 and 2007 is currently highly active.
The discovery is not only very important because it prevented a potential attack, but also shows that groups looking to trigger a coup d’état and who have planned and carried out attacks in the past against non-Muslims as part of a larger plan against the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government are still operating.
Recent trials involving the Ergenekon gang — a clandestine group that includes generals and officers of other ranks, both active and retired, as well as many civilians, including journalists — and several other coup plots have revealed that Ergenekon and related groups worked hard in the 2000s to create chaos in the country for the purpose of manufacturing panic about and distrust in the AK Party government. Although hundreds of suspects have been arrested in many trials, including the now concluded Sledgehammer trial, the plot uncovered in Kocaeli might indicate that they have extensions.
Details linking the murderers of three Bible publishers in Malatya in 2007, in a case known as the Zirve trial, to Ergenekon have emerged. Similar links also came up in the trial regarding the murder of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, which also took place in 2007, and in the murder case of Father Santoro, a Catholic priest killed in Trabzon in 2006.
Orhan Kemal Cengiz, a journalist and contributor to Today’s Zaman, who was in fact targeted by a similar group according to documents found on the computer of a major general who has been arrested in connection with the Zirve murder trial, said there was no way of capturing the entire Ergenekon network without focusing on the anti-Christian activities of the group. He said: ‘The Ergenekon trial is all about anti-Christian movements. The prosecutors are far too focused on the coup attempt; the anti-Christian activity was not investigated thoroughly. There is a problem in their outlook here.’ He said attacks, assassinations and other planned atrocities, some of which have been carried out, against non-Muslims comprise the ‘core’ of the Ergenekon trial.” Read more.

‘Mockery Of Justice’: Iran Sentences Christian Pastor From America To 8 Years In Brutal Evin Prison For Evangelism
By Perry Chiaramonte, Fox News, AP – “Christian pastor Saeed Abedini, an American imprisoned in Iran on charges of evangelizing, was sentenced this morning to eight years in prison.
According to the American Center for Law and Justice, Abedini was verbally sentenced in Tehran by Judge Pir-Abassi, known as the ‘hanging judge,’ to eight years in prison for threatening the national security of Iran through his leadership in Christian house churches. He will serve the time in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison, known as one of the most brutal.
The evidence, the ACLJ reports, was based on Abedini’s activities primarily during the early 2000s, when house churches were not considered a threat in Iran.
‘This is a real travesty – a mockery of justice,’ Jordan Sekulow, Executive Director of the ACLJ, who represents Pastor Saeed’s wife and children living in the U.S., said in a statement. ‘From the very beginning, Iranian authorities have lied about all aspects of this case, even releasing rumors of his expected release. Iran has not only abused its own laws, it has trampled on the fundamentals of human rights. We call on the citizens of the world to rise up in protest. We call on governments around the world to stand and defend Pastor Saeed.’
Although the U.S. does not have diplomatic relations with Iran, National Security Council spokesperson Bernadette Meehan said in a statement Sunday the administration is ‘deeply disappointed that Saeed Abedini has been sentenced to eight years in prison in Iran on a charge related to his religious beliefs.
‘We condemn Iran’s continued violation of the universal right of freedom of religion and we call on the Iranian authorities to release Mr. Abedini.’
Meehan added that the State Department remains in close contact with Abedini.
The State Department also called for Abedini’s release.
‘Mr. Abedini’s attorney had only one day (January 21) to present his defense, so we remain deeply concerned about the fairness and transparency of Mr. Abedini’s trial,’ spokesman Darby Holladay said in a statement.
Iran’s state news agency reported last Monday that Abedini, who was born in Iran but now lives in Idaho, would soon be free. But the report, which came on the first day of Abedini’s trial, was seen by Abedini’s wife, Naghmeh, as just another cruel manipulation.
‘This is all a lie by the Iranian media,” Naghmeh Abedini said. “This has been a repeated promise by the Iranian regime since Saeed was first thrown in prison on Sept. 26, 2012. We have presented bail. After the judge told Saeed’s lawyer that bail was back on the table, the family in Tehran ran around in circles today to make sure Saeed was let out on bail. But again the bail officer rejected bail.'” Read more.
Egypt: A Thousand Muslims Attack Christian Village, Burn Down Homes And Churches, Christian Stores Torched In Southern Egypt
AsiaNews – “More attacks against the Coptic minority in Upper Egypt. A thousand Muslims attacked the predominantly Christian village of el-Marashda (province of Quena, Upper Egypt). Incited by outside religious authorities, extremists burned down homes and shops and tried to demolish the local church. The attack, which took place yesterday, was interrupted by the arrival of the police, who arrested 10 Muslims. Since yesterday evening, a crowd of radical Islamic have blocked access to the city, to prevent the police from taking those arrested away. The police responded by firing tear gas. For safety, the authorities ordered the Christian population not to leave their homes and the local parish has cancelled the celebrations for the Coptic Orthodox epiphany. In solidarity with Christian community, the Imam of the village calls on Muslim youth to protect Christian shops.
Anba Kyrollos, Coptic Orthodox bishop of Nag Hammadi, said the group of extremists, including many Salafis, attacked the village in revenge for a Christian accused of abusing a Muslim girl of 6. The rumors about the pedophilia case had emerged in recent days, sparking tension between the two communities, but police investigations have cleared the man. The girl did not suffer any kind of violence. The Salafis have attacked the Christian village all the same, in spite of outcome of the inquiry.
Local sources say that the representatives of the Christian and Muslim communities, met this morning for a reconciliation. However, the police continue to patrol the town for fear of attacks.
Yesterday’s was the second attack in less than a week.” Read more.

Algerian Islamist Kidnappers: We Kill Christians And Infidels
Qur’an Sura 9:29-30, “Fight those who believe not in Allah nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, even if they are of the People of the Book … the Christians say: The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them; how they are turned away!”
NewsMax – “Islamist gunmen who seized hundreds of gas plant workers in the Sahara told Algerian staff they would not harm Muslims but would kill Western hostages they called ‘Christians and infidels’, a local man who escaped said on Thursday.
In a rare eyewitness account of Wednesday’s dawn raid deep in the desert, a local man employed at the facility told Reuters the militants appeared to have good inside knowledge of the layout of the complex and used the language of radical Islam.
‘The terrorists told us at the very start that they would not hurt Muslims but were only interested in the Christians and infidels,’ Abdelkader, 53, said by telephone from his home in the nearby town of In Amenas. ‘We will kill them, they said.’
His voice choking with emotion – ‘I’m a lucky man,’ he said over the sound of children playing and a television relaying the latest news – Abdelkader described how he managed to escape along with many of the hundreds of Algerians initially detained.
He asked that his family name be withheld.
‘I am still choked, and stressed,’ he said, adding that he feared many of his foreign colleagues may have died. ‘The terrorists seemed to know the base very well,’ he said, ‘Moving around, showing that they knew where they were going.’
The kidnappers said they were retaliating for last week’s French offensive in neighbouring Mali, and demanded that Paris call off the operation and that Algeria withdraw cooperation.” Read more.

Indonesia: Six Christian Schools Threatened With Closure … For Not Teaching Islam
Muslim authorities who insist on Islamic teachings for Muslim students shouldn’t be allowing Muslims to attend Christian schools. It seems to me that they’re allowing this, however, for the express purpose of raising the issue of “regional bylaws” in an effort to rid Indonesia of Christianity one school (and one church) at a time …
By Mathias Hariyadi, AsiaNews – “Jakarta (AsiaNews) – Municipal authorities in Blitar, a town in East Java province, are threatening to shut down six Catholic schools ‘by 19 January’ if the latter do not provide Islamic courses and readings of the Qur’an to their Muslim students, in accordance with regional bylaw n. 8 of 2012, which requires all Muslim students to receive Islamic courses in school. The latter is based on a national law, the National Education Act n. 55 of 2007.
The six Catholic schools at risk are the Diponegoro Catholic High School, the Catholic Vocational Training High School, Saint Mary KG, Saint Mary Elementary School, and Yos Sudarso Catholic Elementary and Yos Sudarso Catholic Junior High School.
The schools received the municipal injunction in the final days of 2012, but their administrators have refused to comply with the directive by 19 January, this according to the head of the local department of the Religious Affairs Ministry.
So far, school administrators have not released any official statement on the matter because of the sensitive nature of the issue. Before expressing any opinion, they are set to take part in meetings with Catholic leaders.
Sources within the schools note however that Muslim students and their families had accepted their teaching programmes ‘without complaining.’ No one has ever ‘objected on religious grounds’.
In fact, it has been a long established practice that Indonesia’s private Christian schools, including those run by the Catholic Church, are not required to offer courses on Islam or readings of the Qur’an as in public schools. Instead, they provide courses and seminars on Christianity and catechism.
Muslim students who attend these schools can for their part take courses on Islam sponsored by their respective Muslim group.” Source – AsiaNews.

Egypt: Thousands Of Muslims Shouting ‘Allah Is Greater’ Destroy Christian Social Services Building Fearing It Would Become A Church
AINA – “Hundreds of Muslims came out of mosques today with hammers and destroyed a social services building belonging to the Coptic Church while chanting Islamic slogans. Security forces arrived after the building was completely razed. The 100 square meters social services building in the village of Fanous, Tamia district in Fayoum province, 130 KM south west of Cairo, had all the necessary government permits; it had a reception hall on the first floor and a kindergarten on the second.
But the Muslims insisted that it would become a church.
A meeting had taken place beforehand between the village mayor and elders from Muslim and Coptic sides and it was agreed that only the first floor was to remain and the second be demolished.
Mosques in surrounding villages called on their microphones this afternoon on Muslims to go and help their Muslim brethrens in the village of Fanous, because Christians were ‘building a church.’ According to rights activist Nader Shukry of Maspero Coptic Youth Organizations, nearly 5000 Muslims took part in demolishing the church property with their hammers, while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar.’ He said no one was arrested, not even the imams who called on Muslims to demolish the building; their calls fall under the crime of ‘enticement to violence.’
The district of Tamia and neighboring Senousen is home to a large congregation of Islamists. Shoukry said that the Coptic Church had previously warned the security authorities of the danger of the Islamists provoking sedition in Tamia and neighboring areas.
A witness from Fanous village said they were working on the building site, which had started two months ago, removing the wood which was intended for the second floor when a Muslim man started insulting the Copts, then they were assaulted by the village women. The mob of Muslim men followed with their attack saying that the whole building has to be demolished. He said that the Muslim elders pretended to be peacemakers, but to no avail. ‘The Muslims with their hammers and spare pipes were demolishing also the walls of the ground floor, leaving nothing standing,’ said the witness. The village mayor and Muslim elders made excuses for not honoring their agreement of leaving the ground floor intact by saying the ‘youth take unreasonable actions.'” Read more.
Man Of Steel: US Pastor Jailed In Iran Stands Firm In Christ Despite Torture, Death Threats
Mohabat News – “According to CP , In his letter, written from the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran and addressed to his wife Naghmeh, the 32-year-old pastor said he was uncertain about his fate.
‘This is the process in my life today: one day I am told I will be freed and allowed to see my kids on Christmas (which was a lie) and the next day I am told I will hang for my faith in Jesus,’ Abedini wrote. ‘One day there are intense pains after beatings in interrogations, the next day they are nice to you and offer you candy.’
However, the pastor sees God’s hand in the midst of persecution. ‘I always wanted God to make me a godly man. I did not realize that in order to become a godly man we need to become like steel under pressure. It is a hard process of warm and cold to make steel,’ he said, referring to the mixed responses he is receiving in prison. ‘These hot and colds only make you a man of steel for moving forward in expanding His Kingdom.’
Abedini’s letter, which has been posted on the website of Assemblies of God USA, also speaks about torture.
‘When for 120 days you are asleep in a room with one big light that is constantly lit and does not separate day or night and when you can only see true sunlight for a few minutes a week, that’s when you are becoming His Workmanship and you can be a vessel in bringing His Kingdom in a dark place and you are able to share the Gospel of Peace and Life to the dying world,’ wrote the pastor ‘in chains for our Lord Jesus Christ.’ ‘And this is where you learn you can love your enemies with all of your heart.’
The American Center for Law and Justice, which is representing Abedini’s family in the U.S., has also said the pastor’s life is ‘in grave danger,’ as he is facing one of Iran’s notorious ‘hanging judges,’ Pir-Abassi, known for issuing death sentences.
‘And now facing one of Iran’s most notorious judges, Pastor Saeed is in a real sense an American abandoned in Iran. The U.S. State Department has done very little to help this U.S. citizen,’ ACLJ Executive Director Jordan Sekulow said in a report shared with The Christian Post. ‘When you read Pastor Saeed’s own words, you understand that Iran has absolutely no regard for human rights and religious freedom.’
Abedini’s case has been transferred to Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, and he is now in the hands of Judge Pir-Abassi, who was named in 2011 by the European Union as an individual subject to sanctions for human rights violations. The judge has reportedly presided over a number of cases against human rights activists, often handing down long prison sentences and even several death penalties.
Despite the hardships he is facing, Abedini remains strong in his faith.
‘Saeed’s letter is nothing short of a modern-day Pauline epistle,’ AG General Superintendent George O. Wood said on the church’s website. ‘As I read his letter through several times, I could only marvel at how God’s faithfulness transcends time as the same Holy Spirit that was with Paul in his times of desperation is fully evident in the words of our brother Saeed.'” Read more.
Egypt: Entire Family Sentenced To Prison For Converting To Christianity
AsiaNews – “The criminal court of Beni Suef (115 km south of Cairo) has sentenced an entire family to prison for converting to Christianity. Nadia Mohamed Ali and her children Mohab, Maged, Sherif, Amira, Amir, and Nancy Ahmed Mohamed abdel-Wahab will spend 15 years in prison. Seven other people involved in the case were sentenced to five years in prison.
The case of the family of Nadia Ali Mohamed began in 2004 when, after the conversion, she and her children decided to replace their Muslim names on their identity cards with their Christian names and city of residence change. To do this she was aided by seven Registry office employees e. Born Christian, she had changed her religion to marry her husband Mustafa Mohamed Abdel-Wahab. After the man’s death in 1991, Nadia decided to return to her religion of origins and to push her seven children to convert. In 2006, one of the boys was arrested by police in an information center in the city of Beni Suef. Suspicious of the young man from the documents he as carrying, where he had changed its name to Bishoy Malak Abdel-Massih, police agents interrogated him for hours until he confessed his conversion to Christianity as desired by the mother. The judges then decide to stop not only the woman, but all of her children and seven clerks from the registration office, responsible for changing the documents.
An individuals religious faith is listed in Egyptian identity cards. Christians, converted to Islam for various reasons that attempt to return to the religion to which they belong have enormous difficulty in correcting their names on the documents. This leads many people to forge them, risking prison. The reverse process, ie the transition from Christianity to Islam is not hindered, and in many cases is favored by the very Registry officials.” Source – AsiaNews.

Egyptian Cleric: Christian Women Who Refuse To Dress Like Islamic Women Should Get Raped
“The worst sin and distraction from virtue that I have left for man is woman” – Prophet of Islam, Mohammed, Sahih AlBukhari, 5096
“When I stood on the door of hell, I saw most of its inhabitants were women” – Prophet of Islam, Mohammed, Sahih AlBukhari, 5196

By Yasmine Saleh and Shaimaa Fayed, Reuters – “Many Egyptian viewers were horrified when preacher Hisham el-Ashry recently popped up on primetime television to say women must cover up for their own protection and advocated the introduction of religious police.
That an obscure preacher could get publicity for such views was seen as another example of the confused political scene in Egypt since the revolt that toppled Hosni Mubarak gave birth to a cacophony of feuding voices.
‘I was once asked: If I came to power, would I let Christian women remain unveiled? And I said: If they want to get raped on the streets, then they can,’ Ashry told Nahar TV last week.
Introducing a Saudi-style anti-vice police force to enforce Islamic law was ‘not a bad thing’, he said, and added: ‘In order for Egypt to become fully Islamic, alcohol must be banned and all women must be covered.’ …
With the economic downturn and rising food prices putting pressure on the government, moderate Muslims, Christians and others worry their new-found political freedom is at risk of being exploited by hardline Islamists bent on imposing their values on a society that has been traditionally moderate.” Read more.
