Pakistan: Christian Nurses In Kirachi Drink Tea Laced With Poison During Ramadan

08/01/2012 Leave a comment

“Pakistan’s minority Christian community’s leaders have demanded an impartial inquiry into the alleged poisoning of nine nurses at a government-run hospital.

The nine Christian trainee nurses at the Civil Hospital in Karachi fell ill on Sunday night after reportedly drinking poisoned tea prepared at their hostel.

They were claimed to have been deliberately poisoned because of their faith.

According to one of the affected nurses, a colleague had made the tea after 10pm and they fell ill immediately after drinking it.

The nurses were taken to the Civil Hospital’s emergency ward and sent back after treatment.

They developed complications the next morning and had to be taken to the hospital again…

Condemning the incident, Christian leader Michael Javed sought a judicial investigation.

Claiming that society had become extremely intolerant and was not allowing minorities to live in peace, the former legislator asked the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to take suo motu notice of the incident.

‘The government has turned a blind eye to the persecution of minorities; our girls are being (forcibly) converted and our churches are being attacked,’ he said.” Read more.

Islamic Protesters in ‘Moderate’ Indonesia Force Church To Close Due To ‘No Permit’

Interesting how Islamists are so concerned about the “rule of law” when it comes to Christianity …

The Jakarta Globe – “Protestors forced a church in Bandung, West Java, to shut down on Sunday amid claims that it was operating without a permit.

The Batak Karo Protestant Church (GBKP) has been in operation since 2007. But protestors claimed that the congregation agreed not to use the building as a house of worship in a 2011 agreement.

‘On Sunday of last week, they used the building for Sunday service,’ Amin Safari told Tempo.co. ‘That is why we sealed the building.’

The protestors also hung a banner on the church’s gate reading, ‘We the people of RW 06 [a neighborhood unit] hardily reject the use of this building, at Kawaluyan 10, to be used for religious activities.’

The church’s committee secretary said that although they did sign the 2011 agreement, the church has since received all the necessarily permits from the local government to hold services.

‘Since June 20 we have held a permit [to hold services] from the Bandung city administration,’ Davin told Tempo.co. ‘We have complied with the legal codes, so the [previous] agreement is no longer valid.’

Amin accused the congregation of manipulating the agreement.

‘The majority of the people still reject the church’s activity,’ he said.” Source – The Jakarta Globe.

Flashback: Indonesia: Hundreds Of Islamists Attack Christian Prayer House During Worship Service For ‘Lack Of Permit’ – “A mob of Muslim extremists attacked a Christian prayer house in Aceh Province. The building was damaged and worshippers were forced to stop the service. Local witnesses, who asked their names be withheld, said that the attack occurred last Sunday, during worship. The place itself belongs to the Indonesian Bethel Church. The fundamentalist attack was apparently caused by a lack of building permit (Izin Mendirikan Bangunan in Indonesian), a claim Christians deny. More disheartening for the members of the congregation is the fact that the attack occurred under the eyes of the police, which did not lift a finger …” Read more.

Egypt: Christian Teacher Arrested For ‘Insulting Islam’ On Facebook

07/31/2012 Leave a comment

By Al Arabiya – “An Egyptian teacher was detained after being accused of posting cartoons on Facebook allegedly insulting Islam, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) and Islamist President Mohammed Mursi, an Egyptian daily reported on Tuesday.

A Coptic-Christian teacher from the southern Egyptian Governorate of Sohag, Bishoy Kamel, was arrested on Monday for sharing the cartoons on a Facebook page, the online edition of Egyptian state-run al-Ahram daily reported.

The charges were pressed against Kamel by Mohammed Safwat, an Egyptian who claimed that the latter had insulted the newly-elected President as well.

Kamel has admitted managing the Facebook page in question, however, he claimed that he was not responsible for the content of the page, which, he alleged, had been hacked on Saturday, according to the report by al-Ahram Online.

In early June, a Coptic business tycoon, Naguib Sawiris, was severely criticized by Islamists after posting a cartoon of Disney characters Mickey and Minnie Mouse dressed in Islamic attire.

A number of Islamist lawyers lodged a complaint at the prosecutor against Sawiris, whom they accused of offending Islam through posting those cartoons. Sawiris, at the time, defended himself by saying that it was just a joke and had no religious dimensions.

Muslim-majority Egypt has for decades been marked by deep sectarian tensions, with religious violence between Muslims and Christians often sparked by disputes over land or love affairs between members of the two communities.

In January 2011, a suicide bomber killed more than 20 Christians outside a church in the country’s second city Alexandria, amid accusations by Islamists that the Coptic Church had detained a woman who converted to Islam.” Source – Al Arabiya.

Nigeria: Suspected Islamists Kill More Christians In Kano

“Motorcycle gunmen opened fire on the car of a Nigerian air force officer on Sunday, killing the driver and an aide, while two other people were killed in a nearby neighbourhood, authorities said.

It was not clear who was behind the attacks in the city of Kano, the largest in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, but they resembled similar killings in the past blamed on Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

‘A car of one of our officers came under attack this morning,’ Air Commodore Sani Ahmed said.

‘The officer’s driver and his orderly were travelling out of town, but as they reached an area called Yan-Lemo, two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on the car, killing the two personnel.’

The officer was not in the car at the time, he said.

In a similar incident earlier in the day, two gunmen on a motorcycle shot dead two people outside their house in a nearby neighourhood, said police spokesman Rilwanu Dutse.

A police source said the victims were from the mainly Christian Igbo ethnic group.

Boko Haram has carried out scores of bombings and shootings in their insurgency in the north of Africa’s most populous nation that has left hundreds dead.” Source – Radio Netherlands.

Officials: Canada A Refuge For Persecuted Egyptian Christians

Viva la Canada! …

By Daniel Proussalidis – “OTTAWA – Christians in Egypt will increasingly see Canada as their chance to escape from a country whose president belongs to the Muslim Brotherhood, immigration officials warn.

‘The (permanent resident application) volume continues to trend upwards and the number of applications submitted may accelerate, given the election of a new, Islamic government in Egypt,’ a Canadian immigration program officer said in documents obtained by immigration lawyer Richard Kurland through Access to Information requests.

Other Egyptians will seek a shorter stint in Canada through a temporary resident visa (TRV).

‘With the resulting political and economic instability in Egypt, combined with the new government, the push factors are now stronger than ever,’ the program officer said. ‘The minority Christian community is especially concerned and they have been seeking exit from Egypt in record numbers.’

While 2012 statistics on permanent resident and temporary visitor visas in Egypt are not available, figures from previous years show numbers were on the rise even before Islamist Mohamed Mursi won the country’s presidential election last month.” Read more.

Flashback: Canada Condemns Egyptian Anti-Christian Violence, Obama Remains Silent – “Even as he renews his outreach to Muslims, President Obama should seek to stem the growing tide of violence against Coptic Christians in Egypt by condemning last weekend’s attacks that left a dozen people dead and scores injured. The attacks, about which Obama has been silent, also resulted in the burning of Coptic Orthodox churches and the destruction of Christian homes and businesses… Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper Monday ‘strongly’ condemned the violence, saying, ‘We stand behind the Coptic Christian community and their right to practice their faith in safety and security, free of persecution.’ The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Obama is preparing to try to reengage Muslims with a speech…” Read more.

Early in 2012, the Tories will finally flesh out a campaign promise to install the Office of Religious Freedom within the secular confines of the Department of Foreign Affairs – a controversial pledge that has drawn accusations of vote pandering and blurring lines between church and state. The Conservatives are unapologetic about making a defence of the right to worship a central objective of Canadian foreign policy, noting, as a recent Pew Centre study found, that assaults around the world on religious freedom have increased in recent years.” Read more.

Egypt: Muslims Burn Down Christian Homes After Christian Laundry Worker Singes Muslim Shirt While Ironing

AFP – “Muslims on Friday set fire to Christian homes in a village near the Egyptian capital after a fight between a Muslim man and a Christian laundry worker who singed his shirt while ironing it, police said.

At least one person was wounded as Muslims and Coptic Christians also traded fire bombs, police officials said.

Muslims have in the past burned the homes of Copts during sectarian clashes, with dozens of Christians killed in the past 18 months alone since president Hosni Mubarak’s overthrow in a popular uprising.

The Copts, who make up roughly 10 percent of Egypt’s 82-million-strong population, were also targets of sectarian attacks before Mubarak’s ouster in February last year.

Mubarak’s ouster was followed by Egypt this year electing an Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi, who has pledged to respect the rights of Christians and says they will be represented in his government.

Egypt: Thousands Of Christian Girls Being Kidnapped By Muslims, Forced Into Servitude, Marriage

07/28/2012 8 comments

By Joseph Mayton, bikyamasr – “CAIRO: A new report from George Washington University professor Michele Clark and Coptic rights activist Nada Ghaly has argued that thousands of young Coptic Christian girls in Egypt are the victim of kidnapping and forced servitude by Muslims in the North African country.

‘Women and girls who are found indicate they were befriended by friends or relatives of their kidnappers, or the kidnappers themselves, drugged and then taken in a well-organized plan.

‘Others, like a young mother who testified before the Helsinki Commission last week, were snatched by violent strangers in broad daylight. Her would-be abductor shouted to bystanders while dragging her to a waiting taxi, ‘No one interfere! She is an enemy of Islam’,’ said a report highlighting the new report.

The report, which detailed Clark and Ghaly’s latest description of violence against young Coptic women, goes on to say:

Abduction, many who return home indicate that they were raped and told they could not go home because their families would never accept them back. Many are beaten; others are forced into domestic servitude. They are not allowed to leave where they are held without a member of their captor’s family keeping watch. They eventually are brainwashed into thinking the only way to be safe is to convert. Their families, who have been searching frantically for their daughters, sisters and wives — without any help from the police — often never discover their fate. The lucky ones find out via YouTube and other websites that their daughters are alive and have converted. While some conversions could be legitimate, overwhelming evidence points to abduction, forced marriage and coerced conversion persecuting the Coptic population.

Clark is not new to her outspoken coverage of the plight of Coptic women, issuing near annual reports on the situation, which some observers say embellishes and delivers a picture that is far from accurate.

In recent years, Coptic Christian advocacy groups have lambasted the Egyptian authorities for allegedly not forcing the return of Coptic girls to their families after they have allegedly been kidnapped by Muslim men.” Read more.

Muslim Persecution Of Christians: June, 2012

07/27/2012 3 comments

Matthew 10:22, “And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.”

By Raymond Ibrahim, Gatestone Institute – “U.S.-backed rebels are committing Christian genocide in Syria, where they are sacking churches and issuing threats that all Christians will be cleansed from rebel-held territory. A mass exodus of thousands of Christians is taking place, even as mainstream Western reporters, such as Robert Fisk, demonize these same Christians for being supportive of the secular regime.

The bloody jihad waged against Nigeria’s Christians, which has seen hundreds killed this year alone, now includes plans to kill Christians with poisoned food, as part of the Islamic organization Boko Haram’s stated goal of purging Nigeria of all Christian presence.

During Egypt’s presidential elections, Al Ahram reported that ‘the Muslim Brotherhood blockaded entire streets; prevented Copts, at gunpoint, from voting and threatened Christian families not to let their children go out and vote’ for the secular candidate.

Meanwhile, under President Obama, the U.S. State Department, in an unprecedented move, purged the sections dealing with religious persecution from its recently released Country Reports on Human Rights. Similarly, the Obama administration insists that the Nigeria crisis has nothing to do with religion, even as Obama offered his hearty blessings to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood president, in the midst of allegations of electoral fraud.

Categorized by theme, June’s assemblage of Muslim persecution of Christians around the world includes, but is not limited to, the following accounts, listed in alphabetical order by country, not severity.

Church Attacks

Egypt: Because many visitors were in attendance, Muslims surrounded a Coptic church during divine liturgy, ‘demanding that the visiting Copts leave the church before the completion of prayers, and threatening to burn down the church if their demands were not met.’ The priest contacted police and asked for aid, only to be told to comply with their demands, ‘and do not let buses with visitors come to the church anymore.’ Christian worshippers exited halfway through liturgy; they were subjected to jeers outside. As the Christians drove away, Muslims hurled stones at their buses. Also, repairs to a Coptic church that was torched and gutted a year ago by rioting Muslims were woefully inadequate, leaving the congregation with a staggering debt from further necessary repairs.

Indonesia: A Muslim mob of 300 wrecked a store that was being used for a Sunday church service on the pretext that it had not obtained ‘permission to hold Mass.’ The mob wrecked the first floor of the store, breaking windows and damaging furniture. Mob Armed With Guns And Knives Forces Church To Close In Northern Algeria

07/27/2012 Leave a comment

ICC – “International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that an armed mob prevented Christians from attending a Protestant worship service in northern Algeria on Friday and demanded the church’s immediate closure. Despite government approval to officially register Protestant churches, congregations throughout the country continue to be threatened and harassed because of their inability to quickly obtain legal status.

On July 20, Christians affiliated with the Protestant Church of Algeria (EPA) were blocked from entering a house where services were being held by a group of disgruntled neighbors in the village of El Majene, near Freha in northern Algeria. The mob, armed with guns and knives, accused the church’s 80 members of meeting ‘illegally’ and launched a petition demanding the church’s immediate closure, the Algerian daily La Dépêche de Kabylie reported.

Despite permission given by the Ministry of Interior in July 2011 stating that all EPA churches are allowed to officially register their congregations, many EPA churches, including the church in El Majene, have not yet been approved. Until the registration is processed, which is known to take years, Protestant churches are considered illegal and often face harassment by neighbors and local authorities.

‘It’s possible that more churches will be closed because the registration process takes so long,’ a spokesman of the EPA in Tizi Ouzou told ICC. ‘Without legal status, neighbors will continue to pressure the church and force Christians to leave. But, if churches have government authorization, than there will not be as many problems.’

Aidan Clay, ICC Regional Manager for the Middle East, said, ‘Although EPA churches have been permitted to register their congregations, the process is arduous and often accompanied by long delays. Yet, the security of Algeria’s churches depends on their ability to register. Until they are granted legal status, worshippers will continue to be harassed and discriminated against by angry mobs and local authorities. It has been more than a year since the Ministry of Interior granted EPA churches approval to register. No justification can be given as to why some EPA churches have still not received official status. We urge the Algerian government to act quickly by legalizing the status of all EPA churches and by overturning repressive legislation, such as Ordinance 06-03, that greatly restricts the worship of Christians and other religious minorities in the country.'” Source – Persecution.org.

Islamic Clerics In Kuwait Declare Building Churches In Muslim Countries Must Be Forbidden

07/27/2012 3 comments

Qur’an Sura 3:85, “And whoever desires a religion other than Islam, it shall not be accepted from him, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers [in hell].”

Arab Times – “KUWAIT CITY, July 26: A group of Islamic preachers claimed that churches should not be built in Islamic countries particularly in the Arabian Peninsula following the issuance of an approval for constructing a church in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily.

Undersecretary of Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Mutlaq Al-Qarawi stressed that the ministry is not responsible for issuing licenses for building churches, and only receives the applications for licenses, which they refer immediately to the Municipality for review.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Nazem Al-Misbah pointed out that the Fatwa and Legislation Department should be questioned for such issues, stressing that based on his knowledge about Islam, it is forbidden to build churches in the Arabian Peninsula.

Adding to the Sheikh Nazem’s comment, Sheikh Mohammad Humoud Al-Najdi said building churches in Kuwait should be prohibited, as Kuwait is a part of the Arabian Peninsula.

Furthermore, Sheikh Sayed A-Rifae Al-Husseini expressed displeasure towards Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs, and the Municipality for approving the construction of a new church in Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, stressing that it is not permissible as per the Sharia.

He added that giving excuses such as it is a matter of human rights and international norms to build it, is not acceptable, as Islam comes first, and people should respect religion first before serving humanity or anything else.” Source – Arab Times.

Flashback: Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Calls for ‘Destruction of All Churches in Region’ – “According to several Arabic news sources, last Monday, Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Abdullah, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, declared that it is ‘necessary to destroy all the churches of the region.’ The Grand Mufti made his assertion in response to a question posed by a delegation from Kuwait, regarding the position of a Kuwaiti parliament member who recently called for the ‘removal’ of churches (he later ‘clarified’ by saying he merely meant that no churches should be built in Kuwait). The Kuwaiti delegation wanted to confirm Sharia’s position on churches. Accordingly, the Grand Mufti ‘stressed that Kuwait was a part of the Arabian Peninsula, and therefore it is necessary to destroy all churches in it.’” Read more.

Flashback: Death to Churches and Christian Holidays in the Islamic World – “Last Sunday, many Christians around the world celebrated Easter, taking for granted that they can congregate and worship in peace. Not so in the Islamic world, where top religious officials call for the destruction of churches, Christian holidays celebrated in church are increasingly a time of death and destruction, and a time of terror. Nigeria, for example, saw some 50 Christians killed ‘when explosives concealed in two cars went off near a church during Easter Sunday services in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna …” Read more.

Egypt: New Fatwa Bans Muslim Taxi And Bus Drivers From Transporting Christian Leaders To Churches

07/24/2012 Leave a comment

By Raymond Ibrahim – “Dr. Yassir al-Burhami, a prominent figure in Egypt’s Salafi movement and vice president of the Salafi Call—the same sheikh who seeks to punish Muslim apostates, condemns Mother’s Day, and advocates deceiving Israel—has just issued a fatwa, published in the ‘Voice of the Righteous Salaf,’ forbidding Muslim taxi-drivers and bus-drivers from transporting Coptic priests to their churches, which he depicted as ‘more forbidden than taking someone to a liquor bar.’

This analogy, of course, does not begin with Sheikh Burhami, but traces back to some of Islam’s early giants, including Ibn Taymiyya and Ibn Qayyim, who agreed that ‘building churches is worse than building bars and brothels, for those [churches] symbolize infidelity, whereas these [bars and brothels] represent immorality.

The logic is simple: It is better to profess Islam and sin, than to profess Christianity and not sin—for the latter denies the veracity of Islam, and hence is much more abominable. In this context, the Muslim who transports a priest to his church where he will preach Christianity—a message that contradicts Islam—is a terrible crime.” Source – Jihad Watch.

That’s perfectly fine … ‘it bans Muslims from hunting and killing frogs to sell to those nations that dine on the amphibians. As the fatwa explains, according to Islam’s prophet Muhammad as recorded in a hadith, a frog’s ‘croaking is praise [to Allah].’ Accordingly, ‘a number of jurists [fuqaha] have relied on this [hadith] to forbid the eating of frogs, under the notion that ‘that which is banned from being killed, is forbidden from being eaten.’'” Read more.

Sudan: Christians Under Increasing Pressure As Sharia Law Imposes Amputation, Crucifixion, Stoning

07/24/2012 9 comments

By Eric Reeves – “Hudud, a specific category of punishment within the penal code of sharia (Islamic law), is unspeakably barbaric in Sudan. And this barbarism has not diminished in recent years, despite claims in some quarters that Islamism is on the wane in Sudan, still a vast and highly various country. The National Islamic Front/National Congress Party (NIC/NCP) regime is as committed as ever to an extremely aggressive interpretation of sharia, as well as its uniform imposition. Under the penal provisions of hudud in Sudan, women are regularly sentenced to be flogged (a punishment that can be fatal) for crimes ranging from brewing beer to support a family to wearing insufficiently ‘modest’ clothing. Even more shocking, women—and girls—are sentenced to be stoned to death under Sudanese hudud for adultery. Although sentences are typically commuted in the judicial proceedings, commutation is entirely arbitrary and seems to depend upon the degree of international attention that is focused on a given case. The execution itself is carried out by a crowd throwing stones at the victim, who is buried up to her chest with her hands tied. It is a slow, grim, and agonizing death.

Cross-amputation—the amputation of the right hand and left foot—is almost incomprehensibly cruel, yet it too persists. A case from several years ago gained prominence in the human rights world because the sentence was handed out to a 16-year-old boy. Most of these cases go unreported, but not always (the link here is to a horrific photograph of four Darfuri men who have had the sentence of cross-amputation imposed; I urge caution in deciding whether or not to view this disturbing photograph). There is no sign that the imposition of this brutally destructive assault on human flesh and spirit will end soon.

Crucifixion is also a punishment under Sudanese hudud. It is the punishment for apostasy (leaving the faith of Islam), but other crimes as well…

… the criminalization, subject to the death penalty, of apostasy; the efforts by the government in Khartoum to impose its restrictive interpretation of Shari’ah (Islamic law) on Muslims and non-Muslims; attacks and threats against the Christian community; the application of the Public Order Act and related laws and use of floggings for undefined acts of ‘indecency’ and ‘immorality’; the denial of public religious expression and persuasion of Muslims by non-Muslims, while allowing proselytizing of non-Muslims by Muslims; and the difficulty in obtaining permission to build churches, as compared to government funding of mosque construction.

In fact, the confiscation of Christian church lands and resources, attacks on churches and church properties, harassment of clergy and parishioners, and the intimidation of Christian religious authority generally saw a marked increase following the independence of South Sudan in July 2011—this despite the long and distinguished tradition of a Christian presence in Sudan.” Read more.

International Christian Concern’s North Africa specialist Jonathan Racho says that a Shariah-compliant constitution will mean more suffering for Sudan’s remaining Christians. ‘This new law (Shariah compliant constitution) is going to affect a significant number of Christians who live in places like Khartoum (the capital city). There are still a significant number of Christians in Sudan,’ Racho said.” Read more.
