WTAQ – “WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A federal judge sentenced a Moroccan man to 30 years in prison on Friday after he was caught in an FBI sting operation planning to detonate a bomb in the U.S. Capitol building, prosecutors said.

Amine El Khalifi, 29, an illegal immigrant who lived in Alexandria, Virginia, was sentenced after pleading guilty in June to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

He faced a maximum sentence under the law of life in prison, but prosecutors agreed to 25 to 30 years as part of a plea deal.

‘The sentence in this case must be a beacon to those would seek to commit such attacks that, when caught and prosecuted, they will be sentenced to decades,’ prosecutors for the U.S. Justice Department said in court papers before the sentencing.

U.S. District Judge James Cacheris imposed the sentence in federal court in Alexandria…

He moved to the Washington area in 2000 and held a variety of jobs, including retail clothing sales in the upscale Georgetown neighborhood, his lawyers said. A nightclub argument in 2007 resulted in his conviction on misdemeanor criminal charges, an incident that led to a deepening commitment to his religion, Islam, they said.

In conversations with FBI agents who said they were from al Qaeda, El Khalifi talked about wanting to bomb U.S. military targets on behalf of God, prosecutors said. He changed his mind and focused on the Capitol building, seat of the U.S. Congress and a popular tourist attraction.” Read more.

Fox News, AP – “The FBI has charged an 18-year-old man for allegedly trying to detonate a car bomb outside a Chicago bar, federal prosecutors said Saturday.

Investigators have identified the suspect as Adel Daoud, a U.S. citizen from of Hillside, Ill., a Chicago suburb.

Gary S. Shapiro, acting U.S. attorney for the northern district of Illinois, and other officials said Daoud arrested Friday night in an undercover operation in which agents pretending to be extremists gave him with a phony car bomb.

Daoud is charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to damage and destroy a building with an explosive, according to court documents.

However, the explosives that Daoud allegedly attempted to detonate posed no threat to the public.

‘They were inert and had been supplied by undercover law enforcement personnel,’ Shapiro said.

A hearing is scheduled for Monday afternoon in a federal court in Chicago.

Federal prosecutors say the FBI began monitoring Daoud after he posted material online about violent jihad and the killing of Americans.” Read more.

“LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Senior police officials on Wednesday warned of potential terrorist attacks in Southern California amid a growing risk of war breaking out overseas.

KNX 1070′s Ed Mertz reports the LAPD is concerned with what it calls a number of ‘active’ plots in the Southland.

‘In this region we have active terrorist plots, in this region, right now,’ said Deputy Chief Michael Downing, commanding officer of the LAPD’s counter-terrorism unit.

The Department is currently tracking ‘government of Iran operatives, Hezbollah, sovereign citizen, homegrown violent extremists, animal rights groups’ and others, Downing said.

He added that Iranian or Hezbollah agents may initiate attacks locally if war erupts between the U.S. and Iran.

The stark warning comes amid a policy shift from the Los Angeles Police Commission, which approved new guidelines on how officers can document what they deem to be suspicious behavior.

The oversight panel voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize officers to report any person who may be involved in activity that may not be illegal but could be linked to terrorism.” Source – CBS Los Angeles.

By JIM KOURI, Family Security Matters – “Democrats serving on New York’s City Council are proposing legislation that would create a new position in response to complaints from Muslim groups and left-wing organizations opposed to the current counterterrorism activities of the New York City Police Department.

In response, New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg went on record saying he opposes ‘planned legislation to create independent oversight of the New York Police Department.’

Two dozen members of the City Council, which is overwhelmingly Democratic, introduced legislation on Wednesday that would create the position of inspector general who would head a department that possesses subpoena power and broad investigative authority to monitor the 40,000-member NYPD. The measure is supported by Muslim groups such as the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the New York Civil Liberties Union.

‘The NYPD is the most regulated department in the entire city,’ Bloomberg said. ‘I think we have enough supervision and oversight. We need to focus on just getting the bad guys off the street and getting the guns out of their hands.’

‘If anyone needs oversight it’s the liberal-left dominated city council. What was historically a citizens group who volunteered their time to help the city and its people has evolved into a full-time career for party hacks and second-rate politicians,’ said an angry former police detective, now working in the court system.

NYPD surveillance of Muslim communities in New York and New Jersey was also condemned by critics who claim it constitutes racial profiling.

Last week, Muslims living in northern New Jersey announced that they had filed a class-action lawsuit against the New York City Police Department’s surveillance of mosques, businesses, universities and other locations as part of its anti-terrorism program.” Read more.

“NEW YORK: A man suspected of association with al Qaeda has been arrested here and charged with providing material support to the terror network and possessing and using firearms to promote violence.

The indictment of Minh Quang Pham was announced by Preet Bharara, the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York and other security officials.

According to court papers, in December 2010, Pham travelled from Britain to Yemen where he showed up at the principal base of operations for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

While in Yemen, Pham took an oath of allegiance to AQAP, carried an automatic assault rifle, obtained training from the group and helped it prepare online propaganda.

Pham returned to the United Kingdom from Yemen in 2011. Prior to his arrest, Pham was held by British authorities in immigration custody.

If convicted on all counts, Pham would face a maximum sentence of life in prison, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 40 years.

His nationality has not been announced.

‘The international law enforcement cooperation that led to today’s arrest of Minh Quang Pham, an alleged associate of a terrorist organization committed to killing Americans both here and abroad, underscores our joint commitment to identifying, prosecuting, and punishing those who would do harm to our country and our people,’ Bharara said in a statement.” Source – Dawn.com.

Flashback: New York City Accountant Pleads Guilty To Aiding Al-Qaeda – “A well-traveled certified public accountant from New York pleaded guilty on Monday to federal charges that he used his technical skills to help al-Qaida. Sabirhan Hasanoff had been arrested in 2010 in Dubai and brought to the United States to face charges of providing material support to the terror network. He faces up to 15 years in prison at his July 23 sentencing. Prosecutors portrayed Hasanoff as a new, more sophisticated breed of homegrown terrorist: He is a dual citizen of the U.S.” Read more.

By Bill Gertz, The Washington Times – “The U.S. military is guilty of political correctness toward domestic Islamic terror, according to a congressional report made public Wednesday that concludes al Qaeda is using U.S.-based Muslim radicals to plan mass casualty attacks.

‘Homegrown radicalization is now the vanguard of al Qaeda’s strategy to continue attacking the United States and its allies,’ said the report on domestic extremism by the House Homeland Security Committee. The report was based on several hearings held by Committee Chairman Rep. Peter T. King, New York Republican.

The report said evidence of the threat comes from recordings made public in Pakistan by the core al Qaeda terrorist group, as well from an English-language magazine produced in Yemen by two American jihadists. Additional evidence came from an American suicide bomber in Somalia who urged Muslims to wage ‘jihad in America.’

The report said violent Islamist extremism is ‘the No. 1 terrorist threat to this nation.’

Of particular concern, according to the report, is the threat posed by radical Muslims to U.S. military communities. The terror threat to military communities is ‘severe’ and growing. It includes the use of ‘insiders,’ like Maj. Niidal Hassan, the terrorist who carried out the 2009 Fort Hood shooting attack that killed 13 people and wounded 29 others.

The report faulted the U.S. military for ‘political correctness’ toward Islam, which the report called a ‘potentially devastating development’ for the security of troops and their families.” Read more.

Seven US troops may face disciplinary action in Koran burning – “A U.S. military investigation is recommending that as many as seven U.S. troops face administrative punishments, but not criminal charges, in the burning of Korans at a U.S. base in Afghanistan in February, The Associated Press has learned. U.S. military officials said the classified report and recommendations for disciplinary action against the service members involved were delivered to the Pentagon more than a week ago. They have been turned over to the Army and Navy secretaries.” Read more.
