Mother of Homegrown NY Jihadist: ‘My Son Was a Normal American Guy … Then He Became a Muslim and He Changed’

11/21/2011 4 comments

Mamma knows best.  I’d love to believe that this will be used as a valuable learning experience for Taqqiya’s Leftist Companions as well as its other friend, the Obama Administration, but somehow I have a feeling that this will all, yet again, fall on deaf ears …

By Henrick Karoliszyn, Glenn Blain & Tracy Connor – “The mother of homegrown terror suspect Jose Pimentel says she loves the city — and her son.

‘I want to apologize to the City of New York,’ Carmen Sosa, 56, said Monday in the lobby of a Harlem apartment building.

‘I love the city. I’ve been here since 1987 and I’m very disappointed with what my son was doing. I didn’t raise him that way. I feel very bad about the situation. I thank the police. They did what they’re supposed to do.’

Sosa said her son’s personality began to change after the then-teenager swapped salsa for Islam about five years ago.

‘My son was a normal American guy,’ she said. ‘He did what young people do. Then he became a Muslim and he changed.’ …

When he started reading the Koran in 2001, Sosa wasn’t happy because she’s a Catholic, but she noted that ‘in beginning, he wasn’t a fanatic.’

‘He prayed and went to the mosque,’ she said.

Over time, he stopped writing and listening to salsa music and spent his days praying, reading and sleeping. She said Pimentel’s fierce embrace of Islam — he converted in 2004, according to police — prompted her to move him back to the city from Schenectady in early 2010.

‘I brought him here because I didn’t like the way he was acting,’ she said. ‘I’m Catholic … I don’t support the Muslims.’

The move did not dampen his fervor.” Read more.

FBI drops the ball, believed that al-Qaida sympathizer Jose Pimentel was not a threat – “The FBI did not pursue a case against an alleged al-Qaida sympathiser accused of plotting to blow up police and military personnel because it believed he was mentally unstable and incapable of pulling it off, officials said on Monday. Investigators from the New York Police Department, which announced the arrest of Dominican-born US citizen Jose Pimentel, 27, at a press conference late on Sunday night, sought to involve the FBI at least twice. But both times the FBI concluded he wasn’t a serious threat, according to officials who spoke to the Associated Press.” Read more.

New York: Police Arrest Muslim Man Planning to Bomb Police Cars and Post Offices and Kill US Servicemen Returning from Iraq and Afghanistan

Add one more to the list.  Just don’t tell you-know-who.  They might have an aneurysm …

By Tina Susman – “Police said Sunday they had arrested a U.S. citizen who planned to bomb police cars and post offices and kill U.S. servicemen returning from Iraq and Afghanistan to protest the American military presence in those countries.

Jose Pimentel, 27, a convert to Islam, had been under surveillance for two years but seemed to have stepped up his bomb-making activities and plotting after the Sept. 30 killing by U.S. forces of Anwar Awlaki, a radical U.S.-born cleric who was living in Yemen, authorities said. Awlaki was a prominent voice for Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, an affiliate of Al Qaeda.

Awlaki’s death ‘really set him off,’ Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said at a Sunday night news conference at City Hall. He called Pimentel a ‘lone wolf.’

Kelly and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Pimentel appeared to have been acting alone and had learned to make bombs by reading an article in Awlaki’s online magazine, Inspire, that was titled ‘How to make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom.’

Pimentel, who was divorced, went to Home Depot and other stores to buy the bomb-making ingredients, ‘being careful not to make all these purchases from any one location all the time,’ Kelly said. ‘He wanted to avoid raising any red flags.’

But Pimentel already had raised suspicions when he was living in Schenectady, N.Y., where, according to Kelly, he pondered changing his name to Osama Hussain because of his loyalty to Osama bin Laden, and discussed with associates traveling to Yemen to learn how to wage war on U.S. soil. It was through those associates, who were not identified, that law enforcement officials became aware of Pimentel, Kelly said.” Read more.

US: 60% of People Arrested for Islamic Terrorist Activities Were American Citizens, Report

“Sixty percent of people arrested for Islamic terrorist activities between January 2009 and April 2011 were American citizens, according to a new report from Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. The study of 104 people who were arrested included U.S. and non-U.S. citizens living in America or abroad.

The report, ‘Analyzing the Islamic Extremist Phenomenon in the United States: A Study of Recent Activity,’ was authored by Joan Neuhaus Schaan, fellow in homeland security at the Baker Institute. Jessica Phillips, an intern with the Baker Institute’s homeland security and terrorism program, provided research support for the study.

Using data from international and U.S. news reports, general Internet media, public records and official court documents, the researchers set out in November 2010 to analyze information on the status of Islamic extremism in the United States. They also looked at some of the unanswered questions raised by U.S. Rep. Peter King’s Committee on Homeland Security hearing, ‘The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim Community and That Community’s Response.’ King, R-N.Y., and chair of the committee, held the hearing March 10, 2011.

‘Providing policymakers this data can allow for a factual discussion and diminish rhetoric,’ Neuhaus Schaan said. ‘Consequently, policy can be crafted to address current and future needs in the face of change and adaptation by those determined to bring harm to the United States.’

Other key findings from the report include:

  • Of the 104 people arrested for Islamic extremist activities between January 2009 and April 2011, half were born in the U.S., 22 percent were naturalized citizens and 7 percent were dual citizens.
  • Of the 104, 5 percent entered the U.S. on a visa.
  • Sixty-three percent of converts had a known prior criminal record.
  • Of the 14 American converts with a prior criminal history, at least 55 percent had converted to Islam in prison.
  • Ninety-two 92 percent were male.
  • Sixty-four percent were 30 years old or younger.
  • Sixty-six percent had traveled or were in the process of traveling to the Middle East, Somalia, South Asia or the Balkans.
  • Of the 104, 70 percent had an association or were attempting an association with an internationally recognized terrorist organization; al-Qaida and its associated branches were cited most.
  • Of the 29 persons with no known association to a group, 11 had been active on terrorist-related chat rooms and websites.
  • Overall, 38 percent had been involved in this Internet activity.
  • Only 10 of the 104 are what the authors would consider ‘lone wolves’; most in the cohort had ties to others in the group or to an organization.

Information on birthplaces and conversion to Islam was available for 77 of the 104 people arrested. The data revealed that 60 percent of the group was born outside the U.S. Of the 31 U.S.-born persons where religion of origin could be determined , 14 were born into Muslim families and 17 converted to Islam.

‘The Internet and prison conversion are the two biggest new trends that policymakers need to look at more closely,’ Neuhaus Schaan said. ‘We’ve seen a major change in how people become associated with extremist groups in the past 20 years, and we need to adapt.’

The report concludes that approximately two-thirds of those involved in extremist activity are men under the age of 34, and no single, all-encompassing profile can be made of the analysis group of 104. Neuhaus Schaan said that the Baker Institute will continue to compile data and issue an updated report annually.” Source – Eurekalert.org

Victims, Family Seek $750M For Fort Hood Tragedy

11/10/2011 Leave a comment

I place a large portion of the blame directly upon the military.  The dangerous ineptitude of political correctness forced the military to ignore what should have otherwise been obvious jihadist sympathies on the part of Nidal Hasan …

“More than 80 victims and family members in the worst-ever mass shooting at a U.S. military installation are seeking $750 million in compensation from the Army, alleging that willful negligence enabled psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan to carry out a terrorist attack at Fort Hood, Texas.

The administrative claims filed last week say the government had clear warnings that Hasan, who is scheduled to go on trial in March, posed a grave danger to the lives of soldiers and civilians.

The victims and family members allege that the government bowed to political correctness and not only ignored the threat Hasan presented but actually promoted him to the rank of major five months before the massacre two years ago that left 13 dead and more than two dozen wounded.” Source – The Associated Press.

Critics: Eric Holder’s willful ignorance about the religious roots of Islamic terrorism is endangering Americans – “Attorney General Eric Holder is stereotyping Muslims in America, and his willful ignorance about the religious roots of Islamic terrorism endangers Americans and marginalizes Muslim reformers, say experts on Islamist terror groups. That assessment was prompted by Holder’s announcement during a Tuesday congressional hearing that American Muslims ‘have the same desires that we all have.’ His declaration came during an answer about the training manuals used by some FBI trainers, which have drawn furious criticism from Islamist lobby groups. Those manuals, Holder said, contain training lessons that ‘can really undermine, really undermine, the really substantial outreach efforts that we have made and really have a negative impact on our ability to communicate effectively, as we have in the past, with this community.'” Read more.

Missouri: Somali Cabdriver Pleads Guilty to Funneling Money to Al-Shabaab Terrorists Back Home

74669-crescentbloodBY JENNIFER MANN – “ST. LOUIS • A Somali refugee who worked as an airport taxicab driver here was secretly plotting with leaders of an insurgent group back home to fund the terrorist organization, according to documents made public during his guilty plea Thursday.

Mohamud Abdi Yusuf, 31, acknowledged through his plea that throughout 2008 and 2009, he raised nearly $6,000 for al-Shabaab, an organization trying to topple the provisional government in war-torn Somalia.

The U.S. government named al-Shabaab a terrorist organization in 2008.

In a public statement, Dennis Baker, special agent in charge of the FBI in St. Louis, underlined the importance of the conviction, saying at least 20 American citizens have traveled to Somalia to join al-Shabaab, which has top leaders affiliated with al-Qaida.

The money at issue went toward a vehicle al-Shabaab used for tactical operations and to hide and deliver weapons, Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Drake said in federal court here.” Read more.

Somalia: Al-Shabaab terrorists say they will plunge Kenya into an ‘endless war’ – “Somalia’s Shebab rebels said Thursday they were building defences that would plunge Kenyan forces battling them into an ‘endless war.’ As Kenyan forces prepared to assault rebel position after moving into Shebab-controlled southern Somalia last month, army spokesman Major Emmanuel Chirchir warned militants were moving weapons by air and donkeys. ‘The Shebab mujahideen will defend Somalia, and will put Kenya into an endless war,’ the Al-Qaeda-linked rebels said in statement. ‘We will defeat you like the other major countries that have suffered when they attacked Somalia, you will see the consequences.'” Read more.

American Suicide Bomber Urged Muslims to Carry Out Attacks Against Non-Muslims Around the World, Including the US and Canada

By ABDI GULED and KATHARINE HOURELD – “MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) – An al-Qaida-linked Somali militant group on Sunday posted a tape allegedly made by an American citizen who blew himself up during an attack on an African Union base in Somalia’s capital that left at least 10 people dead.

The young man, who would be at least the fourth American to become a suicide bomber in Somalia, urges other young people not to ‘just chill all day’ and instead fight nonbelievers around the world.

The website Somalimemo.net, often used by the al-Shabab militia, said Somali-American bomber Abdisalan Taqabalahullaah had emigrated to the U.S. when he was 2 years old.

It was not possible to verify the claims and the U.S. Embassy was not able to comment. U.S. authorities estimate that at least 20 American passport holders have joined the insurgents in Somalia. At least three of them became suicide bombers.

The young man had an American accent and mixed Muslim terminology with American slang as he urged Muslims to carry out attacks against non-Muslims around the world.

‘My brothers and sisters, do jihad in America, do jihad in Canada, do jihad in England, anywhere in Europe, in Asia, in Africa, in China, in Australia,’ the voice said. ‘Anywhere you find (unbelievers), fight them and be firm against them.’

‘Today jihad is what is most important thing for the Muslim ummah,’ he said, using a word for the Islamic community.” Read more.

‘Peanut Butter and Jelly’ Jihad: American-Born Muslim from Pittsburgh a Mouthpiece for al-Qaeda, Expressed Admiration for Bin Laden

10/28/2011 Leave a comment

By Laurel J. Sweet – “As an American-born Muslim of privilege tried to shield himself yesterday with the Constitution he’s accused of betraying, prosecutors began painting for jurors a sinister portrait of a young man the feds said both al-Qaeda and the FBI recognized was becoming a mouthpiece for jihad.

Tarek Mehanna even had all-American code for holy war, prosecutors said: Peanut butter and jelly.

By moderating online chats from the ‘cushy bedroom’ of his parents’ Sudbury home about the monster he thought of as his ‘real father,’ 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden, and translating bin Laden’s recorded calls to arms into English subtitles, assistant U.S. Attorney Aloke Chakravarty said Mehanna, 29, ‘viewed himself as part of the media department of the terror group.’

‘It meant killing, it meant bullets, it meant martyrdom,’ said Chakravarty, noting that in the summer of 2005, al-Qaeda ‘personally solicited’ Mehanna to translate works by leader Ayman al-Zawahri.

And to a large extent, Mehanna’s attorney J.W. Carney Jr. — acknowledging his client was bitter about the war in Iraq — didn’t disagree.

‘Yes, he expressed admiration for Osama bin Laden. He didn’t hide his beliefs; he wore them on his sleeve,’ Carney said on day one of an anticipated two-month trial, amid extraordinary security in and around U.S. District Court in Boston.

Mehanna’s religious and political beliefs — while perhaps treason to some — are ‘what make America so great, so strong, so free,’ said Carney…” Read more.

U.S. Citizens Who’ve Plotted Terror in America

10/23/2011 Leave a comment

Posted as an addendum to this article.  Maybe Barack Hussein Obama should read it if for no other reason than to be reminded of what they all have in common …

By Ashley Fantz, CNN – “This week the U.S. Justice Department accused an Iranian-American, who allegedly has ties to Iran’s elite Quds Force, of attempting to hire a man he thought was a Mexican cartel hitman to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States.

Some question the plausibility of the circumstances that prosecutors have described involving Manssor Arbabsiar, a 56-year-old used-car salesman from Texas.

The alleged plot, if proven, would be but one of several terror schemes hatched by American citizens that were intended to occur on U.S. soil but were not carried out. Here are a few of those:

Iyman Faris

In 2002, Pakistani-American Iyman Faris worked as a truck driver in Columbus, Ohio. He was convicted of providing material support to al Qaeda for his role in a plot to attack the Brooklyn Bridge.

WikiLeaks documents released this spring reveal more details about Faris’ role in the war on terror. Faris pleaded guilty to providing material support to al Qaeda and was sentenced in October 2003 to 20 years in prison. He’s now behind bars in Florence, Ohio.

Ryan Anderson

In September 2004, then-26-year-old Ryan Anderson, a U.S. citizen and member of the Washington National Guard, was convicted of passing military information to American agents posing as al Qaeda operatives.

Anderson, a convert to Islam, was arrested earlier that year at Fort Lewis, Washington. According to the News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington, which covered Anderson’s story extensively, military prosecutors contended that Anderson had ‘grown disgusted’ with what he viewed as ‘the moral decay’ of America, and that Anderson disagreed with the war in Iraq. He was also upset that his Guard unit was being deployed.

Kevin James

In 2005, authorities announced that they had foiled a plot, concocted in a California prison, to use proceeds from gas station robberies to carry out terror attacks. Planned targets included military recruitment centers, synagogues and the Israeli consulate. Kevin James pleaded guilty in 2007 to conspiracy to levy war against the government of the United States through terrorism, and to oppose by force the authority of the U.S. government.

The danger of Islamic radicalization inside American prisons is ‘real and present,’ Rep. Peter King, R-New York, said in June during a controversial hearing on the subject. King is the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee. King weighed in on the alleged plot revealed this week, telling CNN that evidence in the case against Arbabsia is strong.” Read more.

Texas: Five French-Moroccan Muslims Arrested for Breaking Into Courthouse Also Had Photos of Shopping Malls, Water Systems, Courthouses and Other Public Buildings From Across the Nation

They claim they just wanted ‘to get a better view of the city.’   Well, at least they’re honest.  That’s what all terror cells do before deciding which sites to attack …

By Jim Forsyth – “Five men in their twenties, described as French-Moroccan Muslims, are being questioned by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and by officials of the Department of Homeland Security after they were arrested inside the 120 year old Bexar County Courthouse in downtown San Antonio shortly before 2 this morning, 1200 WOAI news reports.

Officials say three of the men crawled through a window to get into the 120 year old Courthouse, which is a landmark in downtown San Antonio, and theother two were found in a van parked in front of the building.

Inside the van, officials say they found ‘photographs of infrastructure’ including photos of shopping malls, water systems, courthouses and other public buildings which they say were taken in cities nationwide.

‘They got travel documents, parking passes, they have been all over the country,’ one law enforcement officials who asked not to be identified told 1200 WOAI’s Michael Board on the scene. ‘A lot of photographic equipment, a lot of documentation equipment inside their vehicle.’

Officials say the five men entered the country legally on visas from Heathrow Airport in London. They didn’t immediately know how long the men have been in the U.S., or what places they may have visited.

Officials immediately blocked off a two square block area of downtown San Antonio around the Courthouse, and bomb sniffing dogs fanned out throughout the building. About two hours later, the streets were reopened, indicating nothing dangerous was found in the building.

‘They are going to be held for interrogation by the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the joint terrorism task force,’ the law enforcement source said.” Read more.

‘Allahu Akbar!’: Muslim Man Screams ‘You’re All Going to Die … You’re All Going to Hell’ at Passengers During Flight Over Texas

10/19/2011 Leave a comment

By Joe Gamm – “Somewhere in the heavens above Amarillo, angry shouts rang out from the back of Southwest Airlines Flight 3683.

‘You’re all going to die,’ a man dressed in black screamed at passengers Tuesday afternoon. ‘You’re all going to hell. Allahu Akbar,’ translated as God is great in Arabic.

Federal authorities arrested Ali Reza Shahsavari, 29, of Indialantic, Fla., onboard the Boeing 737 after pilots made an emergency landing at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport at 3:30 p.m. He is being held in the Randall County jail on a federal charge of interfering with a flight crew.

None of the 136 passengers and five crew members on the flight from Los Angeles to Kansas City was hurt, said Brad Hawkins, spokesman for Dallas-based Southwest.

Police said the incident began with Shahsavari arguing with another passenger. The flight crew separated the men, said Amarillo police Cpl. Jerry Neufeld.

Shahsavari went into a bathroom and yelled obscenities from the rear of the plane, said passenger Doug Oerding, of Sacramento, Calif. Attendants tried to calm Shahsavari before a female flight attendant finally succeeded in quieting him. Oerding said.

As the tension mounted, the aircraft began to gain speed and descend, Oerding said. The slender Navy veteran said he put his shoes back on in preparation to act.” Read more.

Muslim Brotherhood Gaining Foothold in U.S. Gov’t?

10/18/2011 Leave a comment

By Erick Stakelbeck – “WASHINGTON — They were the first modern terrorists and the forerunner of al Qaeda. But these days, the Muslim Brotherhood is becoming mainstream not only in Egypt, but in Washington, D.C.

While the final chapter of the so-called Arab Spring has yet to be written, it appears that radical Islamic forces could emerge as the big winners. None more so than the Muslim Brotherhood.

In Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria and Jordan, the Brotherhood has used unrest to increase its influence.

The group is also making inroads closer to home, according to one expert.

‘Their goal is primarily deception, manipulation and intelligence gathering,’ former FBI Special Agent John Guandolo said.

Guandolo said Brotherhood operatives have infiltrated the halls of power in Washington, D.C.

‘What we’re seeing not just inside the White House, but inside the government entities, the national security entities, the State Department — is a strong push by the Muslim Brotherhood to get their people not just into operational positions, but policy positions — deeper, long term, bureaucratic positions,’ he told CBN News.

Chief among their operatives is the Islamic Society of North America or ISNA, according to Guandolo.

In 2007, ISNA was named as an un-indicted co-conspirator in the largest terrorism financing trial in American history.

Likewise, the FBI has uncovered internal Muslim Brotherhood documents naming ISNA as ‘one of our organizations and the organizations of our friends.'” Read more.

Anwar al-Awlaki Was a ‘Moderate’ Imam at Washington Mosque ‘Known for His Interfaith Outreach, Civic Engagement and Tolerance’

10/02/2011 Leave a comment

I’m [not] shocked!  Someone that everyone thought was a ‘moderate‘ suddenly turns out to be a murderous zealot?  Surely, that could never happen in America where Muslims are granted freedoms and opportunities that they could only dream about in Islamic nations.  What are they learning that would cause them to change their minds? …

By Michael Hernandez – “FALLS CHURCH // Mohmed Kabbach, a street vendor, sat on his collapsible plastic chair outside a mosque near Washington on Friday, waiting for the faithful to finish prayers.

The 47-year-old had not yet heard that Anwar Al Awlaki, one of America’s most wanted terrorists, was killed in a US drone strike in Yemen.

‘Who is Awlaki?’ said Mr Kabbach. Al Awlaki was also an imam at the Dar Al Hijrah mosque, in this small town just 10 miles from the capital, from 2001 to 2002.

He ‘was known for his interfaith outreach, civic engagement and tolerance in the Northern Virginia community’, said a statement from the mosque on Friday.

The description differs significantly from the man US authorities called a leading figure in Al Qaeda.

He was alleged to have links to several planned and actual terrorist attacks, including the failed attempt to blow up a transatlantic flight by the ‘underwear bomber’ and the shooting deaths of 13 US soldiers at Fort Hood, both in 2009.” Read more.

Dr. Wafa Sultan: Muslim ‘Radicals’ Do Not Exist, They Are ‘Simply the Ones Who Are Adherents to the Faith’ – “For years we’ve heard Muslims commonly defined by a couple of different terms, ‘radical’ or ‘moderate.’ Yet what exactly do these terms mean? Dr. Wafa Sultan, born and raised in the Muslim culture of Syria, who now resides in the US, and is a strong advocate of women’s rights, recently provided some interesting insight on this topic during an interview. What immediately caught my attention was her comment that the term ‘radical’ doesn’t exist in the Muslim world. No ‘radicals?’ What is she talking about? ‘This is a term invented by the West,’ according to Dr. Sultan. She also indicated those who suggest Islam has been ‘hijacked by radicals’ were off base. Those whom the West calls ‘radicals’ are quite simply the ones who are adherents to the faith.” Read more.
