Something Rotten in the State of Norway
“… Many of these agencies and individuals later changed their articles to reflect the developing ‘lone nut right-wing anti-immigrant extremist’ theory. Fast forward to a few hours later, and The Atlantic Wire has changed its site to include the following disclaimer:
From BBC News: ‘A terrorism expert tells the BBC that Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami, or the Helpers of the Global Jihad, a terror group that claimed responsibility for the explosion in Oslo, was not behind the attack.’ Previously, a New York Times story cited a terrorism expert who mentioned that the group claimed credit for the attack. But the paper also noted: ‘It is not uncommon for terrorist groups to advance claims of responsibility for high-profile attacks, only to have the claims prove to be spurious.’
Some wag might suggest that the accusation of Islamists deliberately lying in this manner is ‘Islamophobic.’
In any case, the latest news from Yahoo is that the ‘lone nut’ bought six tons of fertilizer–an amount that one might think would elicit some suspicion in consideration of the Oklahoma City bombing, as well as that fertilizer bombs are evidently a favored Islamist method of massacre. Moreover, instead of one ‘lone nut,’ it is reported that ‘police investigated witness accounts of a second shooter.’
This current attack does in fact resemble the McVeigh situation, as pointed out by Gates of Vienna:
I’ve read several accounts that describe the Oslo murderer as ‘a Norwegian Timothy McVeigh.’ The crime in downtown Oslo does resemble the Oklahoma City atrocity–a powerful vehicle bomb, possibly a fertilizer bomb, detonated near a government building for the purpose of causing mass casualties. Then, after initial alarm about Islam, we hear that the alleged perpetrator is a crazed right-wing zealot bent on killing as many of his fellow citizens as possible.
Yes, Oslo and Oklahoma City definitely have a lot in common in this regard.
But one thing many people seem to forget–and which they may never have known, thanks to the American government’s actions and the media spin that followed–is that there almost certainly was an Islamic terror connection to the Oklahoma City bombing.” Read more.
Dominican Republic Cholera Death Toll Climbs to 87
“SANTO DOMINGO – THE DOMINICAN Republic’s death toll in the cholera epidemic that spread from Haiti has risen to 87 out of more than 13,000 suspected cases, authorities said on Friday.
The country shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, where the epidemic has killed more than 5,500 people.
The Dominican health ministry reported that the death toll had risen by 16 since July 8 to 87.
According to the ministry, there have been 773 new cases in the past week, for a total of 13,200 since the beginning of the epidemic, which spread to the Dominican Republic from Haiti in November 2010.
An epidemiological study published at the end of June by the US Centers for Disease Control established that UN troops from Nepal were responsible for the epidemic.” Read more.
Afghanistan Savagery: Taliban Hang 8-Year-Old Son of a Local Police Commander
“KABUL (BNO NEWS) — Suspected members of the Taliban on Friday hung the 8-year-old son of a local police commander in southern Afghanistan after ordering his father to surrender, according to a news report on Saturday.
The Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) news agency reported that the young boy was kidnapped by militants in the Greshk district of Helmand province on Tuesday. They had ordered his father to surrender to the Taliban or else the boy would be executed.
‘The militants had warned his father, who is a local police commander, to surrender with his police vehicle and weapons, otherwise they would kill his son,’ provincial governor spokesman Daud Ahmadi told DPA. The boy was hung on Friday.
While child executions by the Taliban are not common, children often fall victim to Taliban militants when they carry out attacks. But children have also been used by the Taliban as suicide bombers.” Read more.
Why It Wasn’t Unreasonable to Suspect Muslim Terrorism in Norway
By Aaron Goldstein – “In light of the fact that the man responsible for two heinous acts of terrorism which have thus far resulted in the deaths of 87 people is a native born, non-Muslim Norwegian, John Tabin asks if large segments of the media (including bloggers like him and me) were wrong to speculate that this was an act of Islamic radicals.
For his part, Tabin plans to answer that question in depth at a later date. So allow me to give my thoughts. I would like to make the case that it was not at all unreasonable to speculate that Muslims were involved in this attack.
First, it was only a year ago that Norwegian authorities thwarted an al Qaeda plot to attack Norway.
Second, today’s attacks were nearly simultaneous. An al Qaeda calling card.
Third, it was only last week that that Norwegian authorities indicted Mullah Krekar, founder of the Ansar al-Islam, for threats against Norwegian politicians.
Fourth, a Muslim organization called Ansar al-Jihad al-Alami claimed responsibility for the attack. This is the most notable point of all. I mean what kind of people brag about murdering innocent civilians they did not kill?
Finally, consider all the acts of terrorism which have occurred since September 11, 2001 – Bali, Madrid, London, Mumbai, Fort Hood not to mention all those suicide bombings in Israel. All of those attacks were carried out by Muslim entities. Frankly, it would have been irresponsible to discount the possibility of yet another Muslim terrorist attack.” Read more.
Ecuador: Reventador Volcano Showing Signs of Increased Activity, Government Officials Ask No One to Approach
“The Reventador Volcano has shown increased activity and government officials ask no one to approach. Revenatador is located 90 km west of Quito and has a long history of activity. In November 2002 the volcano erupted for the first time in 26 years destroying roads between Quito and Lago Agrio. The 17 km high ash cloud affected 2 million people as it spread over the provinces of Pichincha, Napo and Suscumbios and forced the closure of the Quito Airport causing flights to be rerouted to Guayaquil or Latacunga. A subsequent eruption in November of 2008 effected residents of El Chaco in the Amazon basin.
The Geophysical Institute of Ecuador stated ‘it is clear that the volcano appears significantly more active than in previous months, this being much more noticeable in recent days’ Rash on the volcano Reventador occurs ‘significantly active than in previous months’ and ‘in these circumstances the presence of people near the crater of Reventador is dangerous and in no way recommended to climb to the summit.'” Source.
Remote Alaskan Volcano Poised to Erupt… Directly Under A Major U.S. Flight Path
“Airlines have been told to prepare for travel chaos after scientists said an Alaskan volcano under a major U.S. flight route could erupt at any time.
Satellite images of the remote volcano on the island of Chuhinadak show that it could be poised for its first big eruption in ten years, according to experts.
The Alaska Volcano Observatory raised the alert level for the volcano and said it could erupt at any moment, spewing ash clouds up to 20,000 feet above sea level with little further warning.
The advisory was issued after ‘thermal anomalies’ were detected by satellite.
The 5,676 foot-tall (1,730 meters) Cleveland Volcano is located on the uninhabited island of Chuginadak in the Aleutian chain about 940 miles (1,500 km) southwest of Anchorage.
It is under the flight path between North America and Asia used by major airlines.” Read more.
Norway: Labour Party Youth Camp in Utøya Attacked by Gunman Dressed as Police Officer, At Least 80 Killed
BBC News Live and others are confirming a report that a man dressed as a police officer was shooting at people in a youth camp on the island of Utøya, west of Oslo. Many are reportedly hit. It is unclear if this is related to the recent bomb blast in Norway.
Update 1: The Prime Minister of Norway Jens Stoltenberg had at one point been scheduled to attend this rally on Utøya tomorrow. The former Prime Minister, however, was due to speak there today.
Update 2: A police operation is ongoing. Several people injured. The police are evacuating everyone off the island, some are attempting to swim away to safety. Anti-terrorist units sent in.
Update 3: One man has reportedly been arrested on Utøya. NRK has reported that an Islamist group calling itself ‘Helpers of the Global Jihad’ have now posted a message stating that this is only the beginning of the reaction to Norwegian papers publishing cartoons of Mohammed …
Update 4: Several people have been killed in Utøya, according to Norwegian TV2. Some reports are saying eyewitnesses saw more than 20 bodies at the camp. BBC is reporting that Police Chief Sveinung Sponheim in Oslo says the shooter had also been spotted in the capital prior to the explosions.
Update 5: Man arrested is Caucasian, no word yet on what ties this individual has to terror groups. Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg, speaking at a press conference in Oslo, says ‘We will find the guilty and hold them responsible.’
Update 6: Islamist group ‘Helpers of the Global Jihad’ are now denying any involvement in today’s attack. So far there does not appear to be any solid Islamist connection. Suspect may have acted alone. No word yet on motive. More details will come to light in the coming hours and days.
Update 7: The death toll has, sadly, suddenly risen to at least 84+ killed on Utøya. (Update 7/25 – Police announced Monday that they had dramatically overcounted the number of people slain in a shooting spree at a political youth group’s island retreat and were lowering the confirmed death toll from 86 to 68.)
Update 8: Witnesses suggest that a second shooter may have been involved. Police are investigating. Meanwhile, questions surround whether or not the known shooter’s Facebook page was updated while he was in police custody. Also, it appears that he had apparent neo-Nazi links. Did one or more of these possible neo-Nazi links have access to his Facebook page?
Somalia: Worst Famine in Decades Killing Tens of Thousands, ‘800,000 Children at Risk of Dying Without Urgent Assistance’
By Katharine Houreld – “Tens of thousands of Somalis are feared dead in the world’s worst famine in a generation, a crisis so severe that the United States will allow emergency funds to be spent in areas controlled by al-Qaeda-linked militants as long as the fighters do not interfere with aid distributions.
Exhausted, rail-thin women are stumbling into refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia with dead babies and bleeding feet, having left weaker family members behind along the way.
‘Somalia is facing its worst food security crisis in the last 20 years,’ said Mark Bowden, the United Nations’ top official in charge of humanitarian aid in Somalia. ‘This desperate situation requires urgent action to save lives … it’s likely that conditions will deteriorate further in six months.’
The crisis was the worst since 1991-92, when hundreds of thousands of Somalis starved to death, Bowden said. That famine prompted intervention by an international peacekeeping force, but it eventually pulled out after two American Black Hawk helicopters were shot down in 1993.
Since then, Western nations have mainly sought to contain the threat of terrorism from Somalia – an anarchic nation where the weak Government battles Islamic militants on land and pirates hijack ships for millions of dollars at sea.” Read more.
Aid ban still in place in Somalia, Islamist militants say – “Islamist militants in Somalia have reversed a pledge to allow foreign aid agencies to operate in famine-struck regions in the nation. ‘The lift of ban on aid agencies doesn’t include the agencies that we banned earlier in areas we control because those agencies don’t do relief work, they are spies and work on political agendas’, Al-Shabaab spokesman Ali Mohamud Raage said Thursday on the militants’ radio station, Al Furqaan… Al-Shabaab originally banned foreign aid organizations from providing aid in southern Somalia in 2009, describing them as Western spies and Christian crusaders.” Read more.
Somali militants vow to block aid workers from famine-stricken south – “An al-Qaeda-linked militant group has said it will not allow banned aid organizations to return, meaning only a handful of agencies will be able to respond to the worsening famine in southern Somalia. Meanwhile, the UN children’s agency — one of the few groups that does operate in the area — said Friday that nearly 800,000 children are at risk of dying without urgent assistance.” Read more.
Flashback: Somali aid going to militants, UN staff: report – “The United Nations World Food Program said it is conducting an internal review following a report that as much as half of the food aid it distributes in Somalia ends up in the hands of corrupt contractors, radical Islamic militants and local UN staffers… The report, written by a panel of experts monitoring UN sanctions against the East African nation and obtained by CBC News, describes what it calls ‘large-scale, egregious and systematic obstruction of humanitarian assistance.'” Read more.
Norway: Multiple Fatalities and Injuries After Massive Vehicle Bomb in Oslo
Some news reports are talking about the possibility that this was the work of Islamists.

Suspect may have acted alone. No word yet on motive or how he could have single-handedly produced such a powerful explosion if this was all perpetrated by a single homegrown terrorist.
“A huge explosion wrecked government buildings in central Oslo on Friday including
Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg’s office, killing at least one person and injuring several others.
Norwegian broadcaster NRK said one person was confirmed dead in the explosion.
The cause of the blast was unknown but the tangled wreckage of a car was outside one building and the damage appeared consistent to witnesses with that from car bombs. Police and fire officials declined comment on the cause.
The blast blew out most windows on the 17-story building housing Stoltenberg’s office, as well as nearby ministries including the oil ministry, which was on fire.
Heavy debris littered the streets and a tall plume of brown smoke over the city center.
A Reuters correspondent counted at least eight injured people. Norwegian news agency NTB said that Stoltenberg was safe in the blast, which happened around 3:30 p.m. (1330 GMT).” Read more.

Military Analyst: ‘Iranian Regime Has Been Developing Bombs That Have the Capability of Hitting US Cities on the East Coast’
By Fern Sidman – “Elliott Chodoff, an American born political and military analyst and an IDF reserve major, spoke at the ‘Middle East Briefing’ session of the sixth CUFI national summit in Washington this week.
Citing Israeli military intelligence, Chodoff was quite forthright in his analysis of a possible attack by Iran. ‘Israel cannot survive a nuclear attack. You cannot trust a nuclear deterrent. Israel cannot wipe out Iran’s nuclear arsenal but the US can.’ Chodoff added that the Iranian regime has been developing bombs that have the capability of hitting US cities on the East coast.
He delivered an account of the history of radical Islamism, saying, ‘The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in Egypt in 1928 and its leader imbibed the Nazi ideology that focused on the extermination of the Jews.’ Noting that Iranian cleric Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran who came to power during the Islamic revolution of 1979 was active in disseminating the Muslim Brotherhood ideology to school children, he said that it was Khomeini who was the first to label Americas as ‘the great Satan’ and referred to Christians as the enemies while declaring that America is run by Jews.” Read more.
Iran: Ahmadinejad Threatens to Send the United States and Israel ‘To The Morgue’ – “Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has threatened to destroy the United States and Israel if put on the defensive. ‘Resistance will continue until Iran sends its enemies to the morgue,’ he said on his website, making a reference to the US and Israel who he said are ‘on the verge of collapse and gasping for their last breathes.’” Read more.
North Korea and Iran increase collaboration on nuclear missile, report claims – “According to a study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), North Korea’s weapons programmes are now benefiting from technology from Iran. Pyongyang also possesses technology that would enable Iran’s uranium enrichment programme to increase its output. However concrete evidence that North Korea has supplied the Iranians with its superior equipment has not been uncovered by IISS. The disclosure marks a disturbing escalation in the race for nuclear weapons technology by the two states which are seen to present the biggest threat to global security.” Read more.
‘The End of Man-Made Law, and the Start of Sharia Law’: Britain’s ‘Islamic Emirates Project’

The so-called Islamic Emirates would function as autonomous enclaves ruled by Islamic Sharia law and operate entirely outside British jurisprudence.
The Islamic Emirates Project, launched by the Muslims Against the Crusades group, names the British cities of Birmingham, Bradford, Derby, Dewsbury, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Luton, Manchester, Sheffield, as well as Waltham Forest in northeast London and Tower Hamlets in East London as territories to be targeted for blanket Sharia rule.
The project, which uses the motto ‘The end of man-made law, and the start of Sharia law,’ was launched exactly six years after Muslim suicide bombers killed 52 people and injured 800 others in London. A July 7, 2011 announcement posted on the Muslims Against the Crusades website, states:
‘In the last 50 years, the United Kingdom has transformed beyond recognition. What was once a predominantly Christian country has now been overwhelmed by a rising Muslim population, which seeks to preserve its Islamic identity, and protect itself from the satanic values of the tyrannical British government.
‘There are now over 2.8 million Muslims living in the United Kingdom – which is a staggering 5% of the population – but in truth, it is more than just numbers, indeed the entire infrastructure of Britain is changing; Mosques, Islamic Schools, Shari’ah Courts and Muslim owned businesses, have now become an integral part of the British landscape.” Read more.
Islamic Supremacism Trumps Christianity at Ground Zero
By Pamela Geller – “While New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg works in anxious haste to build the cultural obscenity that is the Ground Zero mosque, the iconic St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was built in 1916 and destroyed in the attack on the World Trade Center towers by Muslim terrorists, remains vanquished, unable to rebuild.
Bloomberg is lobbying for 9/11 taxpayer funds for the Islamic supremacist grifters behind the Ground Zero mosque, but St. Nicholas Church is in purgatory ten years after the worst day in modern American history.
Perhaps St. Nicholas Church should claim that it is a mosque — then Bloomberg and New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn would probably pour the cement for its foundation. Remember: the New York Daily News reported last December that ‘Mayor Bloomberg’s top deputies went to great lengths to help those trying to build a mosque at Ground Zero — even drafting a letter to the community board for them.’
After a Freedom of Information Act request from Judicial Watch, New York City officials released ‘a flurry of emails between its brass and Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam pushing to build a mosque near the sensitive site, and his supporters.’ It was worse than we imagined. The release of these documents, emails, and various exchanges between Mayor Bloomberg’s office and the radical Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf and his motley crew of Islamic supremacists showed evidence of collusion, inappropriate political support for the Ground Zero mega-mosque, and favoritism given to the project.
Rauf is an open proponent of Islamic law, Sharia, with its oppression of women, stonings, and amputations. He is a prominent member of the Perdana organization, a leading funder of the jihad flotilla launched against Israel last year by the genocidal Islamic terror group, IHH. And he’s a slumlord and grifter: Rauf snagged more than $2 million in public financing to renovate low-income apartments. He took the money, never did the renovations, and forced good people to live with vermin and dilapidation.” Read more.
