Daniel 11:36-38, “… he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods … Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women … But in his estate shall he honour the God of forces: and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour …”

“Modena, 10 Aug. (AKI) – Italian police have charged a Moroccan man for recently severely injuring his daughter when he beat her in a shopping mall in northern Italy for not wearing a veil.

As a minor, a restraining order had been placed on the woman’s family when she reported a difficult living situation to family services, according to the Gazzetta di Modena newspaper.

Israel TV: Decision By Netanyahu, Ehud Barak To Strike Iran Is Almost Final

Times of Israel – “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have ‘almost finally’ decided on an Israeli strike at Iran’s nuclear facilities this fall, and a final decision will be taken ‘soon,’ Israel’s main TV news broadcast reported on Friday evening.

Channel 2 News, the country’s leading news program, devoted much of its Friday night broadcast to the issue, detailing the pros and cons that, it said, have taken Netanyahu and Barak to the brink of approving an Israeli military attack despite opposition from the Obama administration and from many Israeli security chiefs.

Critically, the station’s diplomatic correspondent Udi Segal said, Israel does not believe that the US will take military action as Iran closes in on the bomb.

The US, the TV report said, has not provided Israel with details of an attack plan. President Obama has not promised to attack Iran if all else fails. Conditions cited by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta for an American attack do not calm Israeli concerns. And Obama has a record of seeking UN and Arab League approval before action. All these factors, in Jerusalem’s mind, underline the growing conviction of Netanyahu and Barak that Israel will have to tackle Iran alone, the TV report said.

Israel’s leaders have also noted that president George W. Bush vowed repeatedly that North Korea would not be allowed to attain a nuclear weapons capability — a vow that proved empty.

Obama does not want to intervene militarily before the presidential elections in November, and it is doubtful that he would act afterwards, runs the Israeli assessment, the TV report said. Obama may believe that the US can live with a nuclear Iran, but Israel cannot, the report quoted those in ‘Netanyahu’s circle’ as saying.

As for presidential challenger Mitt Romney, he takes a more forceful position, but would probably not have the domestic support necessary to act in the first year of his presidency, if elected, and after that it would be too late.” Read more.

Flashback: U.S. ‘Convinced’ Israel Set To Pounce On Iran Before November Elections – “Channel 2′s veteran Middle East analyst Ehud Yaari, who is back from a trip to the U.S., said Friday night that an Israeli attack on Iran can be expected in October… ‘My impression is that the Americans are convinced that there is very high chance that Israel will decide to attack in Iran before the elections in the U.S. … when you talk to them, they talk about [an Israeli strike] almost as a given – as a clear, unassailable fact.’” Read more.

Two Powerful Earthquakes Strike Northwestern Iran, People Pour Into The Streets In Fear

“DUBAI (Reuters) – Two strong earthquakes killed 180 people and injured about 1,500 in northwest Iran where rescuers frantically combed the rubble of dozens of villages through the night into Sunday.

Thousands fled their homes and remained outdoors after Saturday’s quakes, as at least 40 aftershocks hit the area.

Casualty figures could rise, Iranian officials said, as some of the injured were in a critical condition while other people were still trapped under the rubble and rescuers – hampered by the darkness – had yet to reach some affected villages.

Six villages had been destroyed and about 60 had sustained more than 50 percent damage, Iranian media said.

Photographs posted by Iranian news websites showed bodies lying on the floor in the corner of a white-tiled morgue in the town of Ahar, and medical staff, surrounded by anxious residents, treating the injured in the open air as dusk fell.

Other images showed collapsed buildings and cars flattened by rubble…

The U.S. Geological Survey measured Saturday’s first quake at 6.4 magnitude and said it struck 60 km (37 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.9 km (6.2 miles). A second quake measuring 6.3 struck 49 km (30 miles) northeast of Tabriz 11 minutes later at a similar depth…

The second quake struck near the town of Varzaghan. ‘The quake was so intense that people poured into the streets through fear,’ Fars said…

‘Unfortunately there are still a number of people trapped in the rubble but finding them is very difficult because of the darkness,’ national emergency head Gholam Reza Masoumi was quoted as saying by Fars.” Read more.

America’s Election 2012: Romney Picks Ryan As Vice-Presidential Running Mate

Paul Ryan is a great pick for the conservative base, but not so much for voters that Romney needed to draw in. Due to the fact that the policies and behaviour of the current administration are so disliked by the overwhelming majority of conservatives, they would have voted Republican in November regardless of who the VP pick would have been. We would have even seen a shift in many independent voters towards a Republican ticket. But Romney’s chances would have been better served by selecting a VP that would have had more appeal to women voters and/or minority voters, and preferably someone from one of the key battleground states such as Ohio or Florida. Paul Ryan for VP, as energizing as he is for conservatives, will likely do very little to entice these voters toward a Romney-Ryan ticket, and the fact that older citizens are more likely to vote to protect benefits is something that the left will again capitalize on almost immediately, particularly in Florida. There is no doubt that Obama-enthusiasm has diminished over the past four years. But has it diminished enough to give a Romney-Ryan ticket the win? ….

By SARA MURRAY, COLLEEN MCCAIN NELSON and PATRICK O’CONNOR – “NORFOLK, Va.—Mitt Romney picked Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate, a decision that could spark enthusiasm for the Republican ticket among conservatives and all but ensures the election will turn to deep philosophical divisions between the two parties over spending, taxes and entitlements.

In Mr. Ryan, 42 years old, the Romney campaign gets a conservative who has spent recent years at the center of national debates about the size and scope of the federal government. With his proposals to revamp entitlement programs for future retirees and the poor, he has become a hero to conservatives and a target for liberals.

Mr. Romney praised Mr. Ryan as ‘an intellectual leader of the Republican Party’ who also has ‘shown an ability to work with both parties to find common ground’ on tough issues. ‘I don’t know anyone who doesn’t respect his character and judgment,’ he said in front of USS Wisconsin, a World War II battleship that now is a museum and carries the name of Mr. Ryan’s home state.

President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign suggested the pick represents a stark choice for voters. ‘Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy,’ said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina.” Read more.
