Could Hurricane Isaac Wreak Havoc For Republican Convention In Florida?
With the centuries-old struggle that the descendants of Ishmael have been waging against the descendants of Isaac, I thought it interesting that of all the named storms of the 2012 hurricane season that had the potential to disrupt the plans of those politicking for America’s future, it had to be “Isaac” — notwithstanding the fact that Israel is, as we speak, considering a storm of its own for its own future survival before the US elections in November …
By Jason Samenow, Washington Post – “For three straight simulations, NOAA’s Global Forecast System (GFS) model has tracked a tropical system right over the Florida peninsula through or close to Tampa just as the Republican National Convention is ramping up. Assuming this system – presently a little swirl in the open Atlantic – strengthens some, it will be named Isaac.
Before anyone gets alarmed or excited, consider forecasts of the path and intensity of tropical systems this far out have essentially no skill. As our tropical weather specialist Brian McNoldy said earlier: ‘In the 5-7 day period and beyond, weather details become fairly unpredictable.’
If this model defeats the long odds against it and is somehow right, organizers say they’re ready for the possibility of a hurricane Isaac during the convention according to a report from ABC News:
The Republican National Convention, Secret Service and federal, state and local authorities have been planning for a “multitude” of hurricane scenarios for “well over a year,” said Bryan Koon, Florida’s emergency management director. RNC spokesman James Davis would not give details of those plans, saying only that they are “focused completely on having a great convention.”
Since 1852, the Tampa area been hit by 27 hurricanes including 6 during the month of August the ABC News report said.
Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project has developed a tool that shows the historic probability of a named storm affecting the region around Tampa is 20 percent in any given season. The odds of a direct hit near Tampa is around 3 percent.
Jeff Masters of wunderground, who wrote a detailed blog post on the risk of a storm hitting Tampa during the convention, says the risk of a highly disruptive the storm that would trigger evacuations during the convention itself is smaller:
‘[H]istory suggests that the odds of a mass evacuation order being given during the 4-day period that the Republican National Convention is in town are probably around 0.2%,’ he wrote.
But if powerful hurricane did strike the Tampa Bay region – either during the convention or some other time – the effects could be devastating.” Read more.

Describing Egypt’s president as the ‘ruling imam’, Abdel Azeem argued that as Mursi may be unable to apply the law of God fully at this point, the nation must overcome political differences and rally behind him.
He added in his Eid speech on Sunday in Alexandria’s Shohadaa Square that Egypt will return to being ruled by Islam and Prophet Mohamed’s Sunnah and not democracy, socialism or nationalism.
The Salafi politician insisted that all forces must unite in order for God’s law to be applied during an era, he described as, ‘of phenomenons’; where tyrants fall and it is useful to follow those who came before us and not those of modern times.
Abdel Azeem asked worshipers to pay special attention to the Muslims of Syria, Burma and Palestine, arguing that those who neglect Muslim affairs are not true Muslims.
He also urged worshipers to refrain from abandoning mosques following the holy month of Ramadan, advising them not to surrender themselves to politics and news, which he described as an unfit alternative to religious dedication.” Source – allAfrica.com.

South Carolina: Residents Mystified As Dead Fish, Stingrays Wash Ashore Myrtle Beach, ‘The Ocean Seemed Like It Was Dead’
By Joel Allen – “Something is killing fish and sting rays in the ocean off Myrtle Beach’s coast, but exactly what’s going on out there is a mystery.
All along the beach from around 28th to 68th Avenues north on Friday, beach-goers were finding mixed species of dead fish floating in the surf or washing up on shore.
‘It’s sting rays, there’s pompano, there’s whiting, flounders, little bit of everything,’ said Kerry Caramanis of Virginia.
The fish did not have any obvious signs of trauma, he said. One man and his family told NewsChannel 15 they found 12 dead sting rays in a small stretch of beach.
‘You know it’s maybe the warm water, I don’t know. Who knows? It’s rare though, it’s rare,’ said Carlo Pedone of Burlington, Wisconsin.
Longtime fishermen were baffled.
‘We’ve been coming here for over 20 years and I’ve never seen anything like that happen in this area before,’ said Bob Colgan of Indiana, Pennsylvania. ‘The ocean seemed like it was dead this morning.’
Any number of things can cause fish kills. Algae blooms, known as red tide, can kill thousands of fish at a time.
‘No bite marks on the fish so I would say that it’s some kind of red tide or something of that nature causing it,’ Caramanis said.” Read more.
Israel TV: Netanyahu Determined To Attack Iran Before US Elections, Defence Officials Consult Top Rabbi
The Times of Israel – “Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ‘is determined to attack Iran before the US elections,’ Israel’s Channel 10 News claimed on Monday night, and Israel is now ‘closer than ever’ to a strike designed to thwart Iran’s nuclear drive.
The TV station’s military reporter Alon Ben-David, who earlier this year was given extensive access to the Israel Air Force as it trained for a possible attack, reported that, since upgraded sanctions against Iran have failed to force a suspension of the Iranian nuclear program in the past two months, ‘from the prime minister’s point of view, the time for action is getting ever closer.’
Asked by the news anchor in the Hebrew-language TV report how close Israel now was to ‘a decision and perhaps an attack,’ Ben-David said: ‘It appears that we are closer than ever.’
He said it seemed that Netanyahu was not waiting for a much-discussed possible meeting with US President Barack Obama, after the UN General Assembly gathering in New York late next month — indeed, ‘it’s not clear that there’ll be a meeting.’ In any case, said Ben-David, ‘I doubt Obama could say anything that would convince Netanyahu to delay a possible attack.’
The report added that Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak believe Obama would have no choice but to give backing for an Israeli attack before the US presidential elections in November.” Read more.
Israeli defense officials consult with Rabbi Ovadia Yosef over Iran strike – “Senior defense officials have recently been visiting the ultra-Orthodox Shas party’s spiritual leader, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, to discuss a possible Israeli attack on Iran. Some want the 91-year-old rabbi to support it, others to oppose it. At least one visit, in which the rabbi was briefed on Iran’s nuclear program, came at the behest of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu … Yosef said in his weekly sermon: ‘You know what situation we’re in, there are evil people, Iran, about to destroy us. … We must pray before [the almighty] with all our heart.'” Read more.

Egypt: Attacks Against Christians Under Way In Northern Egypt After Call To Murder All Who Refuse To Convert To Islam

Coptic Solidarity – “Christian Copts in Upper Egypt are under attack, hours after a call for their eradication appeared in the form of leaflets calling on Muslims to kill Copts, specifically naming regions of Upper Egypt.
A report by Fady Talaat, for Al Akhbar News, published August 14, has the details. In Al Gallaweya Village, Sohag, Upper Egypt, Christians are being beaten, their stores destroyed, and their properties plundered. The attackers are declaring that ‘any Christian who dares to leave his house will be killed’; and the Copts are complaining that the police only arrive after the damage has been completely done.
Nageh Hozar, one of the attacked victims now lying in the hospital said that a known felon, who is also a fugitive living in the village, named Mo’tassem Sedky Rashwan, came to a supermarket owned by his brother Fady Hozar to buy cigarettes. He took the cigarettes and refused to pay for them. Instead, he asked Fady to pay him EGP 50 as ‘tribute.’ When the latter refused they had a dispute. The criminal, then, left and came back with his thug brothers, cousins and friends. Zaki explained that the whole gang started beating him up along with his brothers Thomas and Fady Hozar and others, using sticks and canes, leaving them dangerously injured.
They further set four Coptic stores on fires, and looted hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of merchandise. They also attacked and robbed their houses, and even stole their ownership contracts. The gang further destroyed one car and three motorcycles, and the home doors of the Christian village inhabitants.
Zaki stated that their persecutors warned Christians from leaving their homes, promising death to whoever dared try. They said they did not want to see a single Christian in the street, which made many Christians lock themselves in. The revelation of Mr Tucker’s remarkable warning shows the depth of fear among senior officials over the havoc the collapse of the eurozone would wreak on the British financial system.
Mr Tucker is one of the front-runners to replace Sir Mervyn King as Governor of the Bank of England.
Minutes published by the Bank’s Financial Policy Committee in September and December made clear the depth of its concerns, but the explicit warning given to the chief executives shows that officials feared a crisis even greater than that in the wake of the collapse of Lehman Brothers in September 2008. Canada: Thousands Of Dead Fish Cover At Least 2 Kilometres Of Missisquoi Bay Shoreline, Quebec

Having only left to attend college and university in Montreal, Steiche now co-owns a café in neighbouring Bedford, and repeatedly mentions how beautiful his hometown and the Missisquoi Bay region are.
But the 34-year-old new father said he won’t allow his son to experience the same happiness that is being on the water, at least not anytime soon.
The bay, which is part of Lake Champlain, was overrun Thursday by blue-green algae…
The phenomenon occurs every year in the Missisquoi Bay. What was abnormal is the extent of the problem.
Doug Shaver has lived in Philipsburg since 1980, but his family has been living in the area for generations.
He said the water was so murky Friday it seemed as though the bay was filled with blue and green paint. A white foam was also visible in the water.
The abundance of algae means there’s less oxygen in the water, which in turn kills the fish.
‘You could take a stick of dynamite and throw it in the lake and watch the fish come up to the surface. It would be the same effect,’ Shaver said.
He estimated that anywhere between 3,000 to 4,000 dead fish are piled up on the shore.
Mayor Réal Pelletier has lived along the shoreline for 20 years, and said he’s never seen a sight quite like the scene on the lake now.
He says at least two kilometres of shoreline is covered with rotting fish.” Read more.
Texas Officials: ‘Red Tide’ Has Killed Nearly One Million Fish In Gulf Of Mexico
Xinhua -“Officials of the U.S. state of Texas said Friday algae bloom, known as red tide, has killed nearly 1 million fish in the Gulf of Mexico.
According to reports by local TV channel ABC13, the estimate was made by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department after finishing a flyover Thursday in the Galveston bay.
Tens of thousands of dead fish, mostly menhaden, were washed ashore on Sunday on Galveston, an island in the Gulf of Mexico, and water samples collected Monday confirmed it was the red tide that killed the fish.
Parts of the Galveston Bay have been closed for shellfish harvesting due to the red tide, which can cause respiratory problems.
Last year, a red tide covering most of the Texas Gulf Coast and Galveston Bay forced the closure of oyster beds.
The red tide of low-to-moderate concentrations last year arrived in August and lasted until February, but killed no fish.” Source – Xinhua.

Deadly Ebola Virus Outbreak Kills Nine In Democratic Republic Of Congo
RT – “Nine people have died from an outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, only weeks after the virulent disease was declared ‘under control’ in neighboring Uganda, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported.
The new cases of the Ebola virus were detected near the country’s northwestern town of Isiro, the Congolese health minister said.
A group of specialists from various international organizations – the WHO, Doctors Without Borders and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – are working in the country alongside local doctors. They are conducting a detailed epidemiological investigation, and are attempting to quarantine people who may have been in contact with those infected.
The new outbreak comes just weeks after another Ebola epidemic in neighboring Uganda – roughly 30 miles from its border with DR Congo – was declared to be over. The Ugandan outbreak killed 16 people in July. The two epidemics are not believed to be linked, since the strain found in DR Congo is different from the one identified in Uganda, Doctors Without Borders reported.
Ebola is a rare hemorrhagic virus, first discovered in 1976 in Zaire (now known as DR Congo). The disease was named after a small river in the country. Symptoms of Ebola infection include a sudden onset of fever, weakness, headaches, vomiting and kidney failure.
The virus is reportedly fatal in 50-90 percent of cases.” Read more.
